Those missing the RWD Celica's of yore can take hold of some gossip based on a rumor about the dead coupe getting revived with some mechanicals from the Subie parts bin. Going chronologically, the exciting gossip last August was that Toyota was going to use its new stake in Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru) to help it build a small RWD Coupe, which everyone took to mean a new Toyota Corolla AE86. Seeing that '84 Toyota Celica in DOTS today triggered a vague memory of an Alameda Celica from back in the day, something having to do with high school. So I checked my Alameda High yearbook and, sure enough, there's a full page in the back featuring a Celica from the same era as our DOTS car. Several of the kids in the photo were my friends at the time, but I have no idea who owned the car or what the whole "Sette Mobile" thing means. But still- this Celica lives on in infinite time (and Sonjay "loves" the Surf Punks), and it may well be the same car I photographed a couple weeks back. More »

As we've already had a '77 Celica in this series, we're now looking at our first multi-DOTS car. But we have this entire island, with its 70,000 population and little off-street parking, and I can only find two early Celicas? You used to see two of them on every block! The Crusher probably fed exclusively on 70s Celicas for much of the mid-90s, as each one hit 200,000 miles and required some repair costing more than 50 bucks. Nobody walks in LA. And no one rides the bus, either. Which means that everybody drives. And according to the 2005 county census, 50.6% of the county's population is female. Which means there are more women drivers. Yet, and yes I'm painting with a broad brush here, the ladies just don't seem to care about cars the way their testicled counterparts do. I told a woman in a parking lot that I liked her Celica and she didn't know what I meant. Then, in that same Whole Foods lot, no less than five men (myself included) stopped and drooled over a cherry red Jaguar XKR. I can site numerous examples (a female friend of mine bought a Focus over a GTI because the Ford came in Yellow) but I don't think this is exactly news. I mean, Jalopnik has what, one woman reader? Sure, old-school date-code-worshiping car collectors think Toyotas are a snore- you know, if it runs, it's not collectible (plus the stolid rep of Toyota's current lineup doesn't exactly help). But the Gray Lady did some digging and found that a younger generation of car freaks has discovered the cars of Toyota's early forays into the North American market. An 8,000-mile '66 Corona just sold for $16,740 at auction, and that price may seem steal-esque in the years to come.
