				Mercedes has announced a new <a href="http://jalopnik.com/cars/news/new-mercedes-cclass-officially-229785.php">C-Class</a> car with its next-generation four-cylinder diesel mill, uniquely titled "BlueEFFICIENCY." While we're not sure about the name, the specs are certainly impressive: Mercedes claims 204 HP and 369 lb-ft of torque from the 2.2-liter four, while returning a combined 45 MPG and meeting EU5 emissions standards in C-Class Prime form. Mercedes claims the BlueEFFICIENCY engine will replace four separate diesels at the company, and be offered in the <a href="http://jalopnik.com/5046733/c6-corvette-convertible-uses-mercedes-e+class-to-explain-physics-of-wedge-shape">E-Class</a>, the new <a href="http://jalopnik.com/344163/detroit-auto-show-2009-mercedes-glk-vision-freeside-unveiling-extravaganza">GLK-Class</a> and in a future E‑Class Coupe in addition to the C-Class. 				You know you wanted more <a href="http://jalopnik.com/tag/diesel/">diesel</a> goodness, well, this is it. As part of the Mercedes march upon Geneva, they've revealed the latest version of the "Sports Coupé with fun factor," the 2009 CLC 220 CDI. Essentially, this is to the C-Class what the CLK is to the E-Class. Which is to say it's a bit confused because while the back of the car seems to have been truncated, it would be hard to call the CLC unanimously ugly. This particular model is probably the one C-Class or variant a buyer should want to buy (unless there's an AMG CLC63 in the future) mostly because the 220 CDI is the better of two diesel engines offered in the lineup.  Think of this as more as a frugal micro-GT car rather than completely left-brain transportation. 				Full disclosure: I often find myself recommending the MB GL450 to my wealthier friends who ask about big SUVs. That overgrown puppy is one hell of a truck, even if you get to watch your average fuel economy decrease while idling (no really, <a href="http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/reviews/mercedes-benz-gl450/">it's true</a>). Elegant, burly, hella capable and epically comfortable, the GL450's only flaws are embarrassingly terrible gas mileage (14 mpg around town going with the wind) and lofty price tag ($70,000 with the chimes and the catcalls). Realizing this, Big Daddy Daimler just unleashed a diesel version of their biggest 'Ute here in America which gets 36% better mileage. They think the price is fine where it is. Dan has mixed feelings: <blockquote>I started thinking about this on the drive in this morning, when I saw three GLs on the highway, each with one occupant and &mdash; as it happened &mdash; each occupant weighing approximately 110 pounds. 				The US states with the most stringent emissions requirements &mdash; California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York and Vermont &mdash; say Mercedes's E320 Bluetec is not clean enough for prime time. That's a kick in the tailpipe to Merc, which in a recent press release called the E320 CDI the "cleanest diesel vehicle in the world." The problem is, diesel generates more nitrogen oxide gases than gas engines, and although Mercedes's Bluetec system uses a combination of scrubbers in the car's exhaust system &mdash; an oxidizing catalytic converter, a particulate filter and a denox storage converter that absorbs nitrogen oxides temporarily &mdash; it's just not quite enough. The company also has a separate system, called AdBlue, that injects urea (yeah, that one) into the exhaust, splitting nitrogen oxides into hydrogen and H20, but that system isn't commercially available. What does the blow mean for Mercedes, which needs to sell the E-Class diesel in those states to make a viable business case?
