Don't be fooled by the outward appearance of this 1962 Pontiac Catalina. Although there are few hints beyond the "Caution Aluminum" printed on the fenders, what appears to be merely a low trim level Catalina is actually a rare and high performance Super Duty equipped beast. More »

Is it kismet? I suspect so, as over a few short weeks, a couple of themes have begun to emerge in our Jalopnik Reviews. First, Hardigree gets his hands on a Dodge Caliber SRT4 and loses a tire. Not two weeks later, I voyage to sublime Laguna Beach, and then to Catalina Island for some hoontastic off-roadin' in the 2009 Subaru Forester, and I kill not one, but two Yokohamas. Then Siler, too, visits the Golden West and lays down rubber in a Subaru Impreza WRX STI, only to discover that the definitive sport conveyance of reckless youth feels a tad out of place on freeways, as opposed to twisting backroads. Hello! I experience ditto while slinging the new Forester around on rocky, rutted, ill-mannered, road-like pathways, later discovering that the vehicle goes all petulant on regular asphalt byways. Flurry of coincidences? Hope not. I like to think there's a higher power at work.

Inspired by commenter pres' fine-looking '64 model, we thought it was time to pay our respects to the fabulous Pontiac Catalina. Our Grandjalopniks owned two Safari models — a '62 and a '68, while our Jaloparents had a '69 four-door bought from Stan down the street (note that said Jaloparents didn't pay more than a grand for a car until the mid-'80s). These cars were simply the business. The '69 was known as "Mr. Johnson's Rustproof Car" by his students, due to its heavily-oxidized metallic green paint, a testament to GM glory. The '68 burned up in a fire. The '62? The '62 could've been one Jalop's fresh personal ride, had he not been consumed with a '70 Buick at that point. Said Jalop is still kicking himself. – Davey G.
