Possible BMW X5M, X6M Prototypes Spotted In Spartanburg
Some are suggesting that the BMW X5 and X6 prototypes you see here will wear the sacred "M" badge when they reach production. The rules used to state that all BMW "M" cars must be naturally aspirated and rear-wheel-drive. But with rumors of turbochargers being bolted to future M-models, and now the prospect of these soft-roaders, presumably with power being sent to all four wheels, it looks like the rules laid down by the founding fathers are being shredded a-la the US constitution. But are we really seeing what we think we're seeing here? More » -

AC Schnitzer BMW X6 Proves You Can Make The X6 Look Worse
The tuners and tunettes at AC Schnitzer have turned their wrenches toward the 2009 BMW X6, BMW's unique Sports Activity Coupe. When we reviewed the Bimmer, making it look stranger with visual tweaks wasn't high on the list of things we were hoping someone would change. That didn't seem to deter AC Schnitzer, who added a new nose with a lower skirt, along with repositioned intakes and a revised rear diffuser. Lest you think it's all weird show and no go, the company is also tweaking the diesel engines with a new motor control unit, resulting in an unknown amount of horsepower through the Schnitzer's dual-flow exhaust system. Big-Assed 2010 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid Spotted In Death Valley, No Spotted Owls In Sight
Now we don't know for sure if the lack of spotted owls in these photos is the direct result of engineers blasting the A/C in their 2010 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid, but we're going to go out on a limb and say that it is. BMW X6 Sells Out
The entire BMW X6 production run for 2008 has been sold. While there are still a smattering of vehicles available at some dealers, every one scheduled to depart the Greenville, SC production facility has been spoken for by a dealer, many of whom report a long waiting list for the new SAC. This doesn't surprise us at all; the X6 is one of the best driving vehicles made by BMW, easily eclipsing sports SUV competitors like the Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport. In fact, in a competition with the Mercedes CLS, we'd put our money on the big bimmer every time. [via BMWBlog] Thanks to Horatiu for the tip. More » -

BMW Assist, Google Maps Introduce "MyInfo" Service For New Big-Ass X6
BMW's teaming up with everyone's favorite mapping monopoly, Google Maps, to bring a new addition to the BMW Assist Safety Plan. It's called "MyInfo," and it's a service which, in addition to sounding hip and techie-cool through deletion of the spaces in the name, will allow BMW Assist subscribers to send business locations, street addresses and their associated phone numbers to their car via some magical connection between the two companies databases. Look at it kind of like a way to use their ConnectedDrive feature from your home. You may already have intimate knowledge of what that's like if you've ever opened up a browser and spent any time at Google's "Local Search" page. The MyInfo system will be available in the BMW X5, X6, 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7 Series, effective with Model Year 2009, but for 2008 will only be available in the new big-reared 2008 BMW X6 — which, as you can see through the link, we've already had the privilege of road-testing. Starting four days ago, in 2008 X6 "Sports Activity Coupes" equipped with the BMW Assist and Bluetooth systems, customers will be able to call the phone numbers received with their Bluetooth connected mobile phone or, if their BMW is equipped with a navigation system, immediately start route guidance by a simple push of a button. Not to shabby a plan if you ask us. But BMW isn't the first to offer space-deleting net-based navigation connectivity. More » -

2009 BMW X6, Part One

Make Way For a BMW X6 Parade
Boy, put up one set of pics from somebody and they automatically think you want some more. The grocery store BMW X6 wasn't enough fame for David W, now he's sent us pics of the a whole gaggle of them outside the BMW factory. Why they're being led by a Z4 is anyones guess, perhaps they're practicing following a pace car for all the races they'll be in. Maybe it's a dealer ride and drive, validation of one of BMW's 74 types of precision, who knows, but they sure seem to be running them all over the place. In attendance you'll see what looks like the zippy 5.0 liter V8 model lurking around near the gate too. Mmmm, speedy grocery getter. -

2009 BMW X6 Caught In Natural Habitat
Reader David W. captured some very nice shots of the recently unveiled 2009 BMW X6 in what we can only assume is its native environment - a grocery store parking lot. Is it bad we're already making fun of BMW's latest and greatest market blurring offering? Sure it's destined for innumerable trips to the salon and the Coach boutique at the hands of trophy wives everywhere, but shouldn't we give it at least a moment to shine? First Production BMW X6 Caught In The Wild
One of our attentive readers happened to spot what looks to be one of the first (if not the first) production versions of the 2009 BMW X6, specifically an xDrive35i model. Since this car isn't on sale until after March, the most likely place you'd find one running around on the streets is in upstate South Carolina, the base of BMW's manufacturing operations. This is the first we've seen an X6 in black and, we must say, it's a good look for the "Sports Activity Coupe." The full report on how this X6 was gotten below. More » -

Leaked BMW Competitive Analysis Gives Peek at Diesel Options
Something fishy just leaked onto the Bimmer-centric site edBMW. It's a supposedly leaked document that compares the freshly unveiled BMW X6, Porsche Cayenne, and Range Rover Sport head to head, oh yeah, and also provides info on two diesel variants. The comparo makes it look like the new X6 is a gift from the acceleration gods, dutifully spanking both competitors (which strangely do not include the Audi Q7) in both acceleration and fuel consumption. We'll take that with a grain of salt and wait for independent testing first. It's that part about two different diesels that's interesting though. More » -

Detroit Auto Show: EyesOn Design Winners Announced
The Detroit Auto Show opened up with the North American Car and Truck of the Year awards, which was questionably awarded to the Chevy Malibu and the Mazda CX-9. Today the EyesOn Design awards presented four awards for design excellence and at least three of the four winners made sense. The award for the best production car went to the Cadillac CTS-V, which is very deserving. Also deserving is the BMW X6, which won the best production truck. The best concept car went to the Cadillac CTS Coupe. The oddity was the best concept truck, which went to the Chrysler ecoVoyager. Calling the ecoVoyager a truck is like calling a dragon a virgin. BMW X6 Spotted On PCH
We just got the following shots in from Jalopnik reader zedmanauk:My family and I were driving back from Malibu on PCH (Pacific Coast Highway 1) on Saturday (before the fires started) when I noticed a lightly masked BMW X6 on the road in front of us. The manufacturer badges and portions of the lights were covered. My wife took these pics. Because it was twilight and both our car and the X6 were moving, the quality is poor, but it may be interesting anyway.

What's the BMW X6 About? Here's One Answer
Of the new cars launched at this year's auto shows, the BMW X6 continues to stand out as a WTF? moment. Of course, the X6's visual connection to American Motors models of the early '80s makes for an easy joke. But in all seriousness (or as much as we can muster). Where does BMW's X5-sized, slope-roofed, air-sedan fit in the ever-more-finely sliced automotive product universe? According to BMW's North American CEO, Tom Purves — speaking with Automotive News — it's a few things. It's an SUV for people who think SUVs are butt-ugly. It's an SUV for people who don't need lots of cargo space. It's a pothole negotiator for big-city driving. In essence, it's a distillation of BMW's SUV driving experience, without all that pesky utility. Hmm, okay. In a way, he says in sum, it's a "romantic X5." An SUV with joie de vivre? We're assuming that's backed up with reams of market research. Maybe we'll be less confused when the hybrid version comes out. -

Production BMW X6
Surprise! This spy shot snagged by someone on the hallowed grounds of BMW would seem to indicate the production BMW X6 won't be quite as flashy as the concept version of the X6 shown at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The routine dulling of a concept appears to have been gentle on the X6, with the most noticeable changes being the addition of a B-pillar, larger mirrors and a less glamorous set of wheels. But with the sheet metal unchanged, the production X6 still looks pretty much like the concept at Frankfurt did: bizarre. [The Hollywood Extra] More » -

Frankfurt Auto Show: BMW X6 Concept
The BMW X6 may not be the most significant premiere at the Frankfurt auto show, but it was definitely the one met with the most passive puzzlement we've seen. Most in attendance have already seen the spy shots and early press shots, and so knew what to expect. Still, the consensus among those we asked was that BMW has either got a line on a market we've yet to wrap our heads around, or it's produced an altogether unnecessary car with a dubious future. (Who would have thought American Motors was so ahead of the curve back in 1981.) Who would buy such a thing? What's its value proposition? Where's the utility? Is it just a 5-Series for snowy climes? Frankfurt Auto Show: BMW X6, ActiveHybrid Concepts
BMW rolled out its first hybrid-drive vehicle this morning at the Frankfurt auto show. Under the banner of its Efficient Dynamics technologies, the company showed off an X6 crossover with a hybrid-drive system. That's the same system the company developed with strange bedfellows DaimlerChrysler and General Motors. Execs say the system will result in an overall 20 percent improvement in fuel efficiency, roughly that of GM's and Mercedes-Benz's projections for their similarly truckish, two-mode hybrids. The company's chairman of the borard Dr. Norbert Reithofer says it'll be on the barket by the end of 2009. BMW also rolled out its non-hybrid X6, for a brief showcase amid a flurry of Bavarian hyperbole. We're still trying to figure out what it all means. -

2009 BMW X6 Up Close And Personal
Although we haven't heard any more details since the last few times we've showed off spy shots of BMW's new SUV with the aggressively arched rear end, the folks at edBMWBlog snagged themselves some new shots of the X6 with some lighter camouflage. What we lack in new engineering information, we make up with showing a little bit more clearly how BMW's integrated the Mercedes CLS-like four-door coupe look with the Bangle butt. The result? A whole lot of — umm — something. We've also included our last set of professional spy shots below for comparison. [via edBMWBlog] More »
