All-Chrome Mercedes McLaren SLR Sets New High Water Mark On Conspicuous Consumption

Obnoxiously over the top is an understated way to describe this Mercedes McLaren SLR dressed head to toe in chrome (including chrome-tinted glass) as it causes a scene outside the Mall of the Emirates in Dubai. Although this driver has a license plate number so high we'd assume it belonged to a pauper, we know it takes some serious scratch to buy an SLR, but can only imagine the price tag necessary to go ahead and chrome the living daylights out of it. But, while this silver-skinned SLR makes the all-chrome Audi and the all-chrome Ferrari look like last week's leftover meat loaf, we hear the owner's first choice may have been an all-chrome Bugatti Veyron Pur Sang. Jeez, the Financiapocalypse is really hitting us all, isn't it? More »

Hamann-Tuned "Volcano" Mercedes SLR McLaren Spied With Ugly Paint

It looks like Hamann is working on a tuner version of the 208 MPH Mercedes SLR McLaren, which according to the license plate, will be dubbed "Volcano." Spied parked next to a Bentley somewhere in Germania, we can tell the Hamann SLR features six exhaust pipes, roof-mounted air scoop, rear diffuser, deep dish rims, wheel arch flairs, smoked lenses and a huge rear wing. Perhaps more noticeable is the awkward black and white paint scheme and the loss of what little class the SLR once had. Expect to see Sheiklets drag racing these on secret, middle-of-the-desert tracks some time next year and full details to emerge from Hamann sooner. [via WCF]

Mercedes SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S Announced At Intersection Of Outrageous And Exclusive

Daimler has dropped the details on a new version of their top of the-top of the line sports car, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S. With a name that long you have to expect some intense upgrades, and the pointy-star brand comes through with a 650 HP version of the supercharged 5.5 liter V8 (same as the non-S 722), delivering an eye watering 627 lb-ft of torque (also the same). All that power is channeled through a five speed automatic with selectable shifting characteristics. All that adds up to a zero to 62 MPH time of 3.7 seconds, with 124 MPH comes in 10.6 seconds and maximum velocity is 208 MPH — all in a car you can fold the soft top down in. Better hurry if you want a copy for yourself as production is limited to a mere 150 of these beasts, we'll take ours in plaid with an orange top. So basically, it's everything the 722 was, and — umm — we're not sure. See if you can suss it out in the press release below the jump. More »

RENNTECH Releases Mercedes Height Control System

RENNTECH, tuners of all things Mercedes and pizza-sized, have released a digital lowering module (DLM) for monster Benzies equipped with Airmatic or ABC adjustable suspensions. Brabus SLR Roadster Spotted In London

The fanboys over at Autogespot were awfully excited to spot this Brabus SLR McLaren Roadster in London; apparently, it's the first of its kind. Power is up from 626 to 650 HP, dropping the 0-62 mph time to 3.6 seconds and raising the top speed to 209 mph. While we're not that impressed by the limited performance boost, we're relieved to see that the owner had enough taste to keep the standard propeller-like 19-inch rims instead of opting for the 20-inch Brabus Monoblocks. We also find the white paint paired with the red top and interior strangely alluring, somehow lending the SLR's bulbous, awkward body a touch of class. More »

It looks like McLaren and Mercedes are completing one last project before making their break-up official (we haven't read it on our Facebook feed yet). Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Speedster In The Works, Hilarious Crash Photos To Follow

Already a tuner darling, Mercedes is looking to make an even more extreme version of their SLR McLaren supercar, since the SLR 722 is so old news. Possibly codenamed Z119, this SLR will be completely open-top, with only a small pair of screens in front of the driver and passenger, according to these pictures from The Car Enthusiast. To save weight, the air conditioning and other non-essential bits have been tossed, and only the twin hoops remain of anything resembling a roof. Fast? Yeah. The 700 HP Mansory Renovatio Can Save The SLR From Certain Celebrity Death

The McLaren SLR always leaves us scratching our heads. The thundering V8 is brilliantly finessed by McLaren so as to attract only the highest-end of horsepower-happy hoon. However, it's just too pretty. The engine's wrapped up in a package that screams for the depths of the celebrity elite — the oil barons, soccer stars, "gangsta" moguls and Gumballers of the world — to buy it and have their way with it. And by that we mean everything from showing off your "no-no spot," having difficulty entering and exiting, DUIs and of course, smacking into the rear (or front) bumper of a late-model Honda Civic. But for the privileged lowest of the low, the tuning shop of Mansory has put together an attempt to "Save The SLR" by making a version of the McLaren-mobile sure to be unwanted by even the most privileged of douches-with-privilege. It's called the Renovatio. More »

What Is Your Ideal Pair Of Vehicles?

BRABUS got us thinking about pairs with their SLR McLaren and Smart package deal. How great would it be to get vehicles custom matched to fill various needs in your life? Even better, what about cars matched to fulfill your various automotive desires? One of our favorite actual pairings has to be the Bluebird RV with matching Mercedes SLK (now that's a bail out vehicle). It's not something automakers or tuners do very often, given the implicit cost. I think our ideal combination would be the Unimog-based Unicat paired with a roof-mounted Rinspeed Bedouin. Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 GT Bound For US

The track-only Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 GT is coming to America, Prince Akeem style. The racer tips the scales at just over 3,000 pounds, which means that the 680 horsepower supercharged V8 will propel you and your suddenly lighter billfold to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds. We haven't heard from Mercedes on this one, but its sweeping the Mercheads community like a superstrain of mono. A track-only McLaren Mercedes SLR 722? Apparently, only 21 are set for production, at 775,000 Euros a pop, and will likely be sold only to hardcore Mercedes insiders. [Carpassion via Supercars.net]

Mercedes and McLaren Splitsvile on New Supercar

According to Automotive News Europe, there's trouble in supercar paradise. Mercedes and McLaren, once close as kittens in a basket, are reportedly parting ways, putting the kabosh on a successor to the SLR. Word is, Mercedes has opted for the mad motorsports acumen of HWA, partner in Merc's DTM racers. A prototype of Mercedes' next six-fig super-sports car, under the AMG banner, could arrive in time for the Geneva motor show next year. But utter no lamentations for McLaren. Mercedes Drops Top On SLR McLaren Roadster

You've seen the spy shots, now we've got it live and in full effect...via press shots. Yup, it's not in person, but seeing the 626 hp drop-top in the PR pics is still better than the spy photos. And why wouldn't it be? With its AMG V8 compressor engine this 'vert promises all the McLaren-y goodness of the coupe (minus a few extra mph on the top end) while still giving you the opportunity to listen to highly precise German folk music bubbling up through the BOSE sound system with the wind whipping through whatever's left of your hair. So stop on by the Woking, England factory if you're looking to drop the requisite Deutschmarks (or Euros...or probably Pounds as it's built in the British Isles) to snap up your own scissor-door (yup, no gulls on this no-top drop-top) McLaren — although we've no idea yet what the pricing will be. Renntech's Mercedes-McLaren SLR 722 Tweakage

For years, Florida's RENNtech has long been the first stop for well-heeled Mercedes mavens and prospective road-rallyists who wanted an output boost for their SLs. But the company offers hi-po gear across the Merc range, from the lowly (not to us) Sprinter to the highbrow SLR. The SLR too? Right. Upgrades to the pride of Mercedes-McLaren 722 take the form of upgraded intercoolers and their respective pumps, allowing for more boost and putting the 722 (named after Stirling Moss's and Denis Jenkinson's starting time in the 1955 Mille Miglia of 7:22 am) closer to 722 horsepower. If you were an F1 wunderkind like Fernando Alonso, who not only broke Schumacher's streak but also became the youngest F1 champion ever, what kind of company car would you want? Over at Renault, we'd imagine the best they could do for El Nano was an old R5 Turbo 2, but now racing for McLaren, he's just taken delivery of a 650-hp Mercedes-McLaren SLR 722, which sports a zero-to-60 time of 3.6 seconds. How'd She Get The SLR Back? The Paris Hilton And Friends Post-DUI Video

We were always under the impression that if you get a DUI, your car gets impounded — even if you're Paris Hilton. We dunno if there's a clause in the law for celebs like Paris — or maybe the law is if you're found guilty — regardless, we don't remember what happened last time. We kid. Either way, we didn't think you could just get someone to pick you up in your own car after you post bail, which is what seems to be happening with celeb-whore Paris Hilton. Is this video proof of another case of the LAPD showing some leniency to a celeb? And who the hell is giggling on the video during the first few seconds of the tape? And most importantly, how does Paris' spokes-whore Elliot Mintz look so calm at 4:00 AM — is it valium, or something more? A London Speed Record?

It was a Mercedes McLaren SLR that set the record at London City Airport, outside the jurisdiction of traffic cameras, with Autocar editor-at-large Steve Sutcliffe at the wheel. The SLR beat nearest challengers the Ford GT, at 174mph, and the Corvette Z06, at 167mph. True, it was a publicity stunt to preceed the British Motor Show this week, but in the world of press-release regurgitation (guilty) any obscure bragging rights get column inches. More »
