Unless it's the Rinspeed iChange, which cost €1 MIllion to create for its Geneva Motor Show debut.

As with most Rinspeed concepts, the iChange does what other cars can't do. Ignoring the gimmicky iPod-control, the iChange transforms from a single-seater to a three-seater, adjusting the aerodynamic profile based on the number of passengers. This price, approximately one million Euros, includes the cost of "promoting" the vehicle as well, though we're guessing a bit more was spent on the shrinking profile than the brochures.

Rinspeed E2: Hot-Swappable Horsepower Heading To Geneva

We love fun-to-translate Rinspeed press releases. Especially when they start by asking "What is this?" and then proceeding to answer with "It is round, small and cuddly...with a sexy behind." All we know is it still looks like a Fiat 500 Abarth. But maybe that's just because of our "preconceived sociopolitical perceptions of the tuning industry." More on this set-to-debut-in-Geneva twin-power output Fiat in the following press release:

World Debut at the 79th Geneva Motor Show, March 5th through 15th, 2009

Swiss Innovative Thinker Frank M. Rinderknecht Builds Fiat 500 with Two Energy Levels

E2" - 60 or 160 hp at the Push of a Button from Swiss Automotive Powerhouse Rinspeed

Zumikon, Switzerland - What is this? It is round, small and cuddly, has eyes to fall in love with, a sexy behind - and on demand 60 or 160 hp as necessary. It is Rinspeed's answer to the fast changing requirements of the market and sociopolitical perception about the tuning industry.' Rinspeed boss Frank M. Rinderknecht hits the nail on the head: "Just like the auto industry has to adjust to the demands of a new era, tuners have to look for new ways to do business as well." The Swiss automobile visionary Rinderknecht, who has his roots in the tuning business, observes a change in people's attitude, at least in the western world: "We need an intelligent use of our fossil resources, especially of our energy".

Rinspeed's creation is based on the Abarth version of the Fiat 500. Its name ‘E2' signals the fact that the nimble little Italian car is equipped with two different power levels: The 60-hp ‘Commuting' level is more than sufficient to move along with city traffic while saving energy. In this mode the ‘E2' consumes just some four liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. Outside the city, the ‘Highway' mode provides driving fun and added power for fast and safe passing. In ‘Highway' mode the engine produces 160 lively horsepower and transforms the Italian flea into a venerable hornet. Fuel consumption in ‘Highway' mode is in the neighborhood of seven liters per 100 kilometers. The energy management system of the ‘E2' is controlled by a small button in the cockpit that affects the engine electronics.

Rinderknecht believes he is on the right path with his new interpretation of automobile customizing. With the ‘E2' and his concept car ‘iChange,' which is much further removed from production, he wants to nudge the automotive as well as the tuning industries in a new direction, to leave well trodden paths and creatively look for new ones: "I don't believe too much in eco tuning. Many drivers are not willing to miss out on driving fun and don't want to drive a something that announces to the world that they do without. But the number of people who want to use our energy supply responsibly not in the least because they want to protect our environment will grow quickly."

Rinspeed iChange Concept: Mighty Morphing Electric Changer

The Rinspeed iChange concept, headed to the Geneva Motor Show, is touted as the world's first adaptive car-body based on passenger count thanks to a magical rear end. Also, it's controlled with an iPhone.

Seriously, the Swiss auto tuning company claims "In seconds a streamlined one-seater sports car transforms into a comfortable car with ample room for three. The trick: At the push of a button the rear end of the teardrop-shaped car magically pops up." Wow, who knew there was such a thing as a magical rear end?

Anyway, the iCharge is powered by an electric motor mated to lithium-ion batteries available in two different stack configurations, one for short- and one for long-distance. Both choices will apparently be charged by any electric power source including solar. The motor produces 150kW, giving the car a top speed of 220 km/h (137 MPH) and a 0-to-100 km/h (0-to-62 MPH) time of slightly more than four seconds — thanks to a six-speed gearbox borrowed from the Subaru WRX.

And of course, this being a concept car, the key and every other control function is replaced by an Apple iPhone. Yes, that includes the "next-gen" Harman/Kardon "infotainment system" which includes an ability to display directions in a "realistic 3D view." The rest of the amazingly long press release below the interior shots.

Swiss Automobile Visionary Frank M. Rinderknecht Builds a Concept Car with Adaptive Energy Concept

iChange" Alters its Shape - and Automotive Thinking

Zumikon, Switzerland - World debut at the Geneva Motor Show 2009 (March 5th-15th): The Swiss auto
powerhouse Rinspeed presents the ‘iChange,' the world's first car whose body adapts to the number
of passengers on board. For Rinspeed boss Rinderknecht the vehicle is more than just a clever
concept car. "The "iChange" is a symbol for the fundamental changes the auto industry undergoes
worldwide. And it is clear that only those companies will survive that have innovative answers for the
demands of a new automotive era." The visionary Rinderknecht is convinced that the days of gas-
guzzling behemoths are coming to an end: "The "iChange" is a signal for the coming global changes to
individual mobility. We need to be ready to meet these challenges with new ideas."

In seconds a streamlined one-seater sports car transforms into a comfortable car with ample room for
three. The trick: At the push of a button the rear end of the teardrop-shaped car magically pops up.
"We have designed and built an extremely flexible vehicle. In it we have brought the themes of
versatility and continually changing energy demands to their logical conclusions." The result is a
streamlined, lightweight zero-emission car with dramatically reduced energy consumption.

The basic idea behind the ‘iChange:': The energy demand of a vehicle depends mostly on its weight,
the type of engine it uses, and its aerodynamic properties. The engineering-services company Esoro
that traditionally builds Rinspeed concept cars has built an extremely lightweight car weighing in at
only 1'050 kilograms. To power the car, the Swiss specialists chose an electric motor. The idea of the
pop-up rear end was conceived to account for the sizeable effect aerodynamics play in fuel
consumption.

While other cars always have to ferry around their puffed-up exteriors that can accommodate up to
seven passengers even if they're just transporting a single soul, the "iChange" features an adaptive
body. The sole driver is conveyed in a teardrop-shaped car that offers optimal aerodynamic properties
and thus minimized energy consumption. If more than one person need to be transported the
expanding rear provides room for two passengers. As a result of the increased weight and no longer
optimal aerodynamics the energy consumption increases - but only for the time passengers are
actually on board.

The energy for the electric motor comes from lithium-ion batteries that are available in two different
stack configurations for short- and long-distance driving. The electric motor of the "iChange" produces
150kW, capable of propelling the car to a top speed of 220 km/h. The sprint from rest to 100 km/h
takes just slightly over four seconds. This impressive performance is made possible with the help of a
six-speed pre-selector gearbox from the Subaru WRX car. The central research department of
Siemens AG (Corporate Technology, CT) supplied the integration technology for engine/generator,
electronics and battery connection interface. Siemens has long been one of the world leaders for
energy systems and eco technology with pioneering concepts for electric drive systems. Its products
cover the entire electric value-added chain from generation to distribution to consumption. The
gearbox and drivetrain are lubricated with eco-friendly lubricants from Motorex. Custom-made
lightweight 17" and 18" forged wheels with aerodynamic shrouds are supplied by light-alloy wheel
specialists AEZ. Pirelli P Zero tires in size 215/40-17 in front and size 245/40-18 in back provide
optimal grip.

An initial walk-around reveals that the concept car has no doors. The entire electrically powered roof
section of the car measuring just 1.03 meters in height tilts forward to allow passengers to board. Also
gone are such mundane things as a key. Its role is filled by an Apple iPhone, which also controls the
most important vehicle functions. The "iChange" is drastically different than ordinary cars in every
detail: At the heart of the concept car lies the groundbreaking next-generation Harman/Kardon
infotainment system. The system uses an innovative Intel processor technology that guarantees
minimized power consumption. The same is true for the Harman/Kardon high-efficiency audio system.
This revolutionary technology meets highest demands on sound quality, weighs much less than
ordinary systems and at the same time uses only a fraction of energy. This opens the door to a new
dimension of energy efficiency. The route guidance of the navigation system is also especially eco-
friendly: The system calculates the most energy-saving route and displays the directions in realistic 3D view. Eberspächer Group from Esslingen, Germany is one of the world leaders in car heaters.
Specifically for the "iChange" project Eberspächer developed custom-tailored electric and fuel-burning
heating systems. Both systems are geared toward the specific requirements and conditions of electric
vehicles.

The pure wool used in the interior was further refined into high-tech wool by Schoeller using state-of-
the-art processes. The wool is spun and died in accordance with the highest eco standards. It provides
an extremely extravagant ambiance in the ‘iChange,' looks stunning and is delicate to the touch. The
competence partner Strähle + Hess transformed this natural product into a striking interior. Its surface
character and materiality combine to create a symbiosis of shell, firmness and frothy air.
Unconventional techniques create unusual surfaces. The seams of the seats are reversed and the
removable seats cushions are adorned with the prototype's name. Xmobil provided further
customization services. While textiles can be found in the "iChange" in their original form in other
areas, they are newly interpreted on seats and cargo floor using various refinement techniques such
as braiding and gathering and a combination of both. Leather strips alternate with technical textiles.
The seat cushions are interchangeable, braided felt alternates with technical textiles formed into three-
dimensional shapes. This transfers the adaptive concept of the "iChange" to the interior as well. The
diamond-coated anti-slip floor is supplied by abrasives specialist KGS.

The Swiss Federal Ministry for Energy (Bundesamt für Energie) supports the "iChange" project as a
groundbreaking research and development project. Solar panels on the top and sides of the roof
provide electricity to the fan to keep temperatures in the "iChange" comfortably low on hot summer
days. The large Sharp solar panels also provide additional eco-friendly charging of the batteries.

With the "iChange" Rinderknecht, a passionate C. F. Bucherer watch wearer, and his partners once
more want to provide food for thought for the automotive industry. The Swiss car visionary: "If we want
to maintain our individual mobility in the future we have to rethink the car in its entirety, without taboos.
Most of all, we have to take its ecological aspects into consideration." And in the end everyone has to
personally answer the same question: Am I ready and willing to change myself, do and can ‘I change'?

Esoro - Swiss Made

Frank M. Rinderknecht used highly advanced technology and a Swiss-based network of top
automotive specialists for his project. So the Rinspeed "iChange" fits perfectly to Esoros motto:
engineered by Esoro - What you dream is what you get.

For the tenth time the Swiss engineering company Esoro was hired to serve as general contractor for
the entire project. Esoro was responsible for project management, implementation of new
technologies, engineering, rendering, design and the manufacturing of the Rinspeed "iChange". Esoro
realized the Rinspeed "iChange" with the help of its competent suppliers. Starting with initial concepts,
it took the highly skilled development team just six months to realize the entire project. For 18 years
now, Esoro has been a contract developer of concept vehicles, components and products with main
focus on lightweight construction and mobility. During this time it has gained a well-deserved
reputation for excellent efficiency and innovative solutions, which is demonstrated by numerous
prototypes and serial products. Esoro develops fiber reinforced components from initial conception up
to pre-production samples. In-house specialists optimize the component properties and characteristics
throughout the entire development process. Important steps are non-linear, strong orthotropic Finite
Element Analysis and crash simulation.

Another recent development from Esoro is the new E-LFT production technology developed for Weber
Automotive. E-LFT makes large scale production of high-strength and lightweight composite parts
affordable. E-LFT composite parts weigh more than 30 percent less than comparable steel parts. The
tailgate of the actual smart fortwo – the first serial produced E-LFT-component – was produced over
200'000 times since 2007 and received the JEC Innovation Automotive Award 2008. Furthermore
another production process for niche markets, like high performance cars, trucks and caravans is now
under development at Esoro. The new and patented process called Melt Embossing offers the
possibility to produce high end thermoplastic composite parts with low initial invest for structural and
semi-structural applications.

Since the company was founded, Esoro has been working intensively in the field of conception,
implementation and tests of alternative and optimized vehicle concepts and drive systems. Esoro is operation of electric, hybrid and fuel cell drives. The Rinspeed "iChange" proves impressively this
competence using cutting edge technology.

Electric shape-changer: a sports car or a sports van? Rinspeed "iChange" - forward-looking ideas on
AEZ wheels

The Motor Show in Geneva is traditionally the place where Frank M. Rinderknecht presents his
visions. For years he and his company Rinspeed have been presenting environmentally-friendly,
practical and extravagant creations, which offer possible solutions for the future of automobiles. And
now joining him for the third time is: AEZ, the renowned manufacturer of premium light-metal wheels.
Following the eXasis and the underwater car sQuba, this time the perfect alloys had to be found for
the "iChange". Norbert Frohner, the General Manager of AEZ, said the following: "As with the sQuba
we have created a new wheel, which works almost directly on the blank forging. The task was just as
complex as last year, but also just as different. Although the "iChange" can't go underwater, it is
extremely diverse on land – and that's precisely what the wheel intends to demonstrate."

Frank M. Rinderknecht's latest development is actually a vehicle which adapts to diverse conditions:
First and foremost, thought, the "iChange" is a thoroughbred, futuristic sports car. The AEZ alloys
support this by looking like the wheels on a classic Bugatti - and that suits the streamlined design of
the Rinspeed. In this form the "iChange" is a fun car for one person, but "when the rear is raised as if
by magic" it changes in the blink of an eye into a small sports van for three people. The double spoke
wheel also takes part in the metamorphosis; it fits the spatial wonder like a glove even when the focus
is shifted to the adequate transportation of people.

Dynamics meets versatility - that is this year's topic from Rinspeed. Rinderknecht says: "If we want to
maintain our individual mobility in the future, then we will have to rethink the car disregarding all
taboos." That also means that the vehicle has to adjust to changing conditions. And that explains the
name "iChange". The vehicle concept also comprises, of course, the vehicle technology, as it also has
to adjust to future demands. As is normal with Rinspeed, environmental protection is in the foreground:
an electric engine with 150kW (204 HP) offers decent thrust without harmful emissions. With its large,
enclosed surface, the wheel from AEZ provides even better aerodynamics - it helps to extend the life-
span of the battery and increase the sports potential of the "iChange". Designers and technicians at
AEZ have designed and built an expressive, spectacular alloy for an extraordinary car. It represents
the high-point so far in the cooperation between the wheel producer and Rinspeed.

Durability on four wheels. Carl F. Bucherer supports the "iChange" by Rinspeed

For both Frank M. Rinderknecht, the founder of Rinspeed Concept Cars, and Carl F. Bucherer,
innovation is the driving force of all production. So it is not surprising that the Lucerne watch
manufacturer is supporting the latest of Frank M. Rinderknecht's projects the variable Rinspeed
"iChange". Over 30 years ago, Frank M. Rinderknecht set himself the goal of fulfilling the dreams of
his youth and realizing the vision of the ultimate motor vehicle with his own cult car. His company,
Rinspeed, soon created for itself a unique reputation in the tuning and modification of luxury vehicles
for a financially independent clientele. In parallel with this, Rinspeed became famous for producing
concept and small series cars. In his partnership with international companies in the high-tech field,
Frank M. Rinderknecht actually provided them with a valuable development platform.

Common philosophy, new project: Cars which can drive on water, cars which can drive under water,
cars with transparent bodywork. The concept cars developed by Frank M. Rinderknecht interpret
mobility in a different way. They are the work of a person, who quietly goes his own way. Just as Carl
F. Bucherer, founder of the Lucerne watch brand, used to. This was one of the reasons that CEO
Thomas Morf and Marketing Manager Bruno Jufer decided to support Frank M. Rinderknecht and his
ideas. However, an even greater influence was the common philosophy shared by Carl F. Bucherer
and Rinspeed, demanding technology, top class materials and amazing shapes, all contributing to an
innovative, conceptually convincing final product.

From the sports car to the van: This common philosophy is also foremost in the latest Rinspeed-
Project. The "iChange" is a "1-2-3-seater" with a 150kW-e-motor, whose eye-catching body shape
adapts to the number of passengers by electronic tail magic. At the touch of a knob, one can convert
the single person sports car into a small sports van for three people, exactly like the motto "I change".
As well as in its design, the "iChange" reveals its innovation through its extremely low energy
consumption: the car drives without exhaust emission and boasts a weight and wind resistance
thus one of the few companies in the world with well-founded experience in development and reduced to their minimum. So the Rinspeed "iChange" demonstrates a high potential in the area of
durability, which also represents part of Frank M. Rinderknecht's motivation: "We have put a flexible
vehicle on wheels and, in so doing, the themes of the varied and constantly changing energy
requirements meaningfully thought right through, to take the ecological aspect fully into account",
maintains the car tinker.

Highest Swiss quality: Innovative thinking, the belief in one's own way and today's theme of durability
are also of the utmost importance for Carl F. Bucherer components, and explain why the Lucerne
watch manufacturer is collaborating on this project with Frank M. Rinderknecht. "The Rinspeed
"iChange" stands for change, future-orientated technologies and great passion. This embodies the
Carl F. Bucherer philosophy in a unique way", explains Bruno Jufer, Executive Vice President
Marketing. The "iChange" will be presented to the public for the first time at this year's motor show in
Geneva, taking place from 5th to 15th March. Carl F. Bucherer will be there with Rinspeed. All in all, the
credos of the "iChange" and the watch models of Carl F. Bucherer go perfectly together: the highest
Swiss quality and efficiency, combined with the perpetual search for perfection.

About Carl F. Bucherer: Carl F. Bucherer, registered as Bucherer Montres S.A., is an independent
company with 90 years competency in the production of luxury watches. The Manufacture brand
stands for uncompromising quality and esthetical products with stylish design. It combines the finest
watch making craftsmanship with the highest jewelry competency. The name recognizes the
pioneering achievements of the company's founder of the same name, Carl Friedrich Bucherer. The
Carl F. Bucherer brand was launched in 2001, with the objective of giving more strategic emphasis to
its manufacturing expertise, which had already been successfully demonstrated since 1919. As the
only watch brand located in Central Switzerland, Carl F. Bucherer produces and markets exclusive
ladies and gents watches, thereby building the second arm of the Bucherer Group. Today, the
Bucherer Group is managed by the owner-family. It took the Carl F. Bucherer team only a short time to
develop an effective distribution network and create international consumer awareness for the brand.
In July 2007, Carl F. Bucherer strengthened its market position as a watch manufacturer in the
premium segment with the acquisition of the workshop for the development, research and production
of manufacture movements, Carl F. Bucherer Technologies SA, (formerly Techniques Horlogères
Appliquées SA) in Ste-Croix, and with the launch of its manufacture movement CFB A1000 at
Baselworld 2008.

but economical in-cabin heater: The electric motor simply does not generate enough waste heat to use
for heating the passenger compartment. The concept car appeals because of its transformability not
only with regard to its body, but also with regard to heating, and offers two attractive alternatives. The
Eberspächer Group - headquartered in Esslingen and one of the world's leading manufacturers of
vehicle heaters - developed both a perfectly fitted electric heater and a custom-engineered fuel-
powered heater specifically for the "iChange" project. Both systems are designed to meet the specific
requirements of electric vehicles.

With the electric PTC air heater from Eberspächer catem - global leader in the field of electric auxiliary
heaters - the "iChange" is fit especially for short trips and city traffic: The prototype that was developed specifically for the Rinspeed project was designed for a nominal voltage of 580 volts. Thanks to its fully
insulated construction, the PTC heater is safe from an electrical standpoint. Because of the
aerodynamic shape of the corrugated ribs, the heater body exhibits only a minimal pressure drop on
the air side. With a heating capacity of 5.6 kilowatts, the electric in-cabin heater achieves a high power
density in spite of its extremely compact size: The dimensions of 228 x 167 x 36 millimeters mean that
the air heater requires very little space for installation. Other benefits: The heater's efficiency - the
direct energy conversion from electric energy into thermal energy - is 99 percent. In addition, no
pollutants are emitted during operation of the heater. As a result, the PTC heater is ideal for zero-
emission vehicles intended for use in congested areas to keep the air clean.
Electrical pre heating of the vehicle by a park heating function is also possible - especially during the
charging process.

For longer trips the Eberspächer Airtronic is the right choice: Since the fuel-powered heater puts no
load on the vehicle's electrical system, the battery capacity is available entirely for driving purposes. In
this way, the "iChange" achieves a considerably greater scope. The Airtronic, also designed
specifically for the concept car, consumes about maximum of 0.43 liters per hour of heating and has
been engineered especially for the combustion characteristics of the alternative, eco-friendly fuel E-85
ethanol. The small 3.5-liter tank disappears cleverly behind the license plate. The major benefit of the
Airtronic is its high energy efficiency: With an efficiency of 84 percent - based on the primary energy
input - it excels when overall CO2 emissions are taken into consideration. Equipped with a catalytic
converter and with nitrogen oxides and particulates filtered out to almost below the detection limit, the
Airtronic appeals not only because of its positive ecological features, but above all because of its rapid
heat output. Moreover, the unit has all the convenience features of a regular Eberspächer park
heating: In the winter, the passenger compartment can be pre-heated and ice-covered windows
cleared without the need for scraping.

In the "iChange", Eberspächer has exemplified two different air heating systems for electric vehicles.
Use of electric or fuel-powered water heaters produced by the company is also conceivable.
Integrated in a cooling water circuit these kind of heating systems are able to pre-heat the sensitive
battery in the winter - holding it capable of cold starts - and cooling it in the summer. Besides electric
water heaters are able to use the waste heat of power electronics, motor and other users for heating
proposes and support so an overall thermal management.

With its many-faceted technologies, Eberspächer truly conveys the meaning behind the name
"iChange": The company provides custom-engineered system solutions for any requirement and thus
positions itself as the specialist for innovative thermal management for the drive concepts of the future.

Harman International sets the standard for energy-efficient audio and infotainment solutions without
compromises

"One does not discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time".
Harman Becker Automotive Systems, the Automotive Division of Harman International, truly lives this
tenet of French author André Gide, and introduces more than just one energy-efficient audio and
infotainment solution in the Rinspeed "iChange" zero emission concept car. And this without any
compromise in performance and enjoyment.

At the heart of the is the next generation Harman infotainment system. The overall system is designed
to minimize power consumption, which is achieved thanks to the innovative new Intel® processor on
board. The same mindset is applied to the Harman Kardon® GreenEdgeTM high-efficiency audio
system. This revolutionary technology satisfies the highest demands for superb sound reproduction
while dramatically reducing energy consumption and weight, resulting in efficiency levels never before
possible. In the "iChange", a total of twelve Harman Kardon HiETM high efficiency speakers are driven
by a highly efficient eight-channel amplifier. The Class D amplifier, with Harman's uniquely designed
output amplifier stages, achieves efficiency levels in excess of 90 percent, compared to 35 to 50
percent in conventional models. Together this system reduces current required dramatically while
providing a new benchmark in dynamic performance. In addition, the embedded satellite navigation
system calculates the most energy-friendly route, and guides the driver to the destination by means of
a realistic 3D display.

With this entirely new energy-efficient system approach without compromise, the Automotive Division
of Harman International offers a vision of what the technology leader in infotainment and audio will be
offering drivers in the very near future. The car of tomorrow will be permanently "on-line" providing energy-efficiently the best in information, communication and entertainment, with a performance
spectrum that easily competes with any stationary application at home or in the office.

Harman Becker Automotive Systems, the Automotive Division of Harman International, offers leading-

Rinspeed iChange Transforming Concept To Debut At Geneva

Following the debut of the James Bond-inspired Rinspeed Squba at the last Geneva Auto Show, Rinspeed plans to wow Transformers fans in Geneva with their iChange 1-2-3-seater concept.

The Rinspeed iChange concept uses what the company calls an “electronic trick-tail” to change the shape of the cabin to fit the number of passengers. When only the driver is on-board a lower profile provides a more aerodynamic shape. If others want a ride the vehicle will move up to provide more space for up to two more passengers. When not shape-shifting, the car runs on a 174 HP electric motor, and apparently hope.

Why do we say that? According to the press release, the name "iChange" is meant to imply that we all have to want to change to electric cars unless we want the world to end. So the gauntlet is thrown down with the statement: "The best possible answer the big automakers could find for the “iChange” would be a strong 'Yes, we can!'" Does that make any sense? Not really, but it sounds like a certain campaign slogan from a certain president-elect has inspired the designers and marketers at Rinspeed. Full, hopeful details in the press release below.

World premiere at the 79th International Motor Show in Geneva March 5th thru March 15th 2009

Swiss off-the-wall thinker Frank M. Rinderknecht constructs concept cars with fully variable body design.
"iChange“ - 1-2-3-seater with "trick-tail"

Zumikon - World premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show (March 5th thru March 15th 2009): with the “iChange” the Swiss designers of Rinspeed present a “1-2-3-seater” powered by a 130 kw-electric motor. The concept car’s striking body structure adapts via “electronic trick-tail” to the number of passengers: while the sporty and streamlined teardrop shape seats only the driver, two more passengers may join him once the car’s rear end has risen as if by magic. In the blink of an eye the full-blooded sports car turns into a compact sportsvan.

With the Rinspeed “iChange“ the automotive jack-of-all-trades Frank M. Rinderknecht and his partners aim to provide thought-provoking impulses for the automobile industry: “Thinking about variability and the constantly changing energy demand, we have created an extremely flexible vehicle.” The result is a zero-emission car featuring both extremely low weight and aerodynamic drag, thus further reducing the power consumption.

For Mr. Rinderknecht the car’s name “iChange” means more than a flowery phrase: “If we want to preserve our individual mobility in the future, we have to re-think our conception of cars - above all we need to accommodate the ecological aspects.” The best possible answer the big automakers could find for the “iChange” would be a strong “Yes, we can!”

The Rinspeed Bedouin: A Shooting Brake For All Seasons

This may actually be one of the most Jalopnik cars in existence and, as a shooting brake, it fits within our day's wagon theme. What makes it such a Jalopnik ride? Start with the fact that it's based on the Porsche 996 Carrera but upgraded to use natural gas, giving it 420 horsepower and 413 lb.-ft. of torque. Then realize that it's a wagon/shooting brake concept with room for four. Finally, remember that it is able to convert itself into a two-seater small truck. Porschaminowagon! Perfect for a Klan rally on Tatooine, as pictured above.

Rinspeed Bedouin - Oriental Quick-Change Artist - Rinspeed Bedouin

Rinspeed Bedouin.

At the push of a button the Rinspeed Bedouin can be transformed from a roomy two-seater pick-up into a sporty yet spacious four-seater wagon sporting the trendy 'allroad' look - in less than ten seconds. With its high roofline the Bedouin also offers lots of room and seating comfort for rear-seat passengers. Even more, the increase of interior space can be used as an enclosed cargo bed by folding down the backrest of the rear seats.

"With the Rinspeed Bedouin we wanted to show that there's lots of untapped creative potential regarding multi-purpose vehicles," says Frank M. Rinderknecht (47), C.E.O. of Rinspeed AG. "From our point of view MPVs can contribute to the preservation of the world's resources since they're capable of taking on many of the specialized uses of second or third cars. And they can adapt to the specific transportation needs at hand within seconds."

The transformation trick

The almost magical transformation sequence is started by two electric motors that drive jackscrews to lift the entire roof of the vehicle. The front part of the roof then folds and in effect becomes the tailgate window while the rear part of the roof turns into the cargo bed. The tailgate is also electrically powered and can be lowered to extend the bed by another 45 centimeters to an overall length of 185 centimeters. The bed can be used to transport bulky cargo and serves as a modern tent replacement and romantic bunk for leisurely rests.

To comply with highest safety standards the entire mechanism is fitted with redundant self-locking safeties and for maximum effect is operated with a remote control.

The fastest natural gas vehicle in the world

The Rinspeed Bedouin is powered by a future-oriented environment-friendly twin-turbo engine running on natural gas. Natural gas is an extremely clean-burning fuel that consists almost entirely of methane and contains almost no sulfur.

Protecting the environment does not preclude driving fun: The four-valve engine is from Porsche and produces 420 hp / 309 kW at 6,000 rpm. It delivers its impressive maximum torque of 560 Nm at just 2,700 rpm. Performance is accordingly proud: The 1,640-kg Bedouin accelerates in roughly 5.9 seconds to 100 km/h and reaches an electronically and mechanically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

Sporty thoughts ...

The sporty lines of the Bedouin attract attention even at first glance. It is a little reminiscent of the Porsche 911, type 996 Carrera, from which it takes the 4x4 platform. In keeping with the English tradition of the 'shooting break,' the sporty wagon of the affluent hunter, the roofline exhibits a dynamic swing that gradually flattens out toward the rear. The wide rear fenders and their striking air inlets exude raw power. The large air inlets in the front provide ample cooling air and also contribute to the powerful appearance of the Bedouin.

A sporty stainless-steel exhaust from Remus with milled all-aluminum tailpipes provides the adequate sound and gives the rear a unique and dynamic look.

The elaborate roof design made from aluminum profiles is witness to the engineering prowess of Rinspeed. The entire mechanism for operating the roof is hidden from view behind the sidewalls. Green-tinted Folia Tec glass in the roof louvers creates a bright and cozy ambiance even when the roof is closed.

Thanks to a sporty yet comfortable custom Eibach suspension, the body of the Bedouin sits about 15 centimeters higher than that of the Porsche equivalent. The suspension, which features adjustable ride height and firmness, offers a perfect synthesis of ride comfort and sporty handling.

The rearview mirrors as well as the front and rear bumpers are painted with sparkling crystal paint from Swarovski, which also contributed the fully crystal hood emblem and the rear badge featuring SDS technology.

In the Bedouin even the taillights look forward - into the future. In.pro. custom-developed chrome-plated LED taillights for the Bedouin, which not only initiate a new design trend but also offer increased traffic safety due to their exceptionally fast reaction time.

The entire body of the Bedouin is made up of Pre-Preg composite, a state-of-the-art plastic rarely used in automotive production. It combines a low specific weight with extraordinarily high strength.

Crystal worlds of leather

The Bedouin shows its proud heritage in the interior, too. Most of the interior of the Bedouin was retained from the Porsche 996 Carrera and was custom-upholstered with exquisite "Poltrona-Frau leather" from X-Mobil. The brown hue of the color "Cotto" harmonizes perfectly with the exterior color, which changes from slightly green to copper.

The Rinspeed designers also broke new ground in the selection of materials. In a partnership with the world-leading manufacturer of crystal glass Swarovski they created ultra-modern and visionary new interior elements. The hand-covered door panels shine in soft hues of brown and white. The gearshift-lever grip is made from solid crystal with a shift pattern embedded using endographics. Lasers were used to imprint the leather seats with Rinspeed logos, which were then in turn covered with crystals.

A seven-inch color LCD monitor folds down from a recessed position in the roofliner. It can display the signal from the rearview camera for the driver or entertain the passenger with the program of an integrated DVD player. The system was developed Blaupunkt and also allows connecting an external programming source such as a Sony Playstation.

Well shod

The Rinspeed Bedouin runs on voluminous fully off-road capable 18-inch Continental SportContact 4x4-tires in sizes 255/55 in front and 285/50 in the rear. The Continental tires combine environment-friendly design, exceptional off-road capabilities and excellent grip on road surfaces. The tires are mounted on two-piece Rinspeed aluminum wheels (8.5x18" Rim Offset 40 mm front, 10x18" Rim Offset 52 mm rear) custom-made by ATP.

The installed progressive-rate Wandfluh steering contributes greatly to the cat-like agility of the Bedouin. A mere half a turn of the steering wheel separates the full left from the full right position. This steering system makes fast steering-angle changes child play without compromising directional stability.

The Rinspeed "X-Treme" Is A Swiss Extravaganza

The mad Swiss at Rinspeed, known for both Porsche tuning and underwater Lotus tuning have set their sights on the Porsche 957 Cayenne and the results are <s>extreme</s> X-treme. The Rinspeed X-treme is much wider and lower than the stock Cayenne thanks to the bulging arches and matching side skirts. The whole package is also lower thanks to an electric air suspension that lets the driver adjust the car by 35 mm. More power comes courtesy of a new sport exhaust system that brings the X-treme up to 600 hp. Press release below the jump.

Swiss Extravaganza - The Rinspeed "X-treme" based on the Porsche 957 Cayenne

The Swiss company Rinspeed, also renown as a noble Porsche tuner, can look back to thirty years of tradition and now presents its latest customizing program based on the face-lifted Porsche Cayenne. The latest creation of the Swiss is called X-treme which is specially high-lighted by the sporty and dynamic aerodynamics package. It plays the latest Cayenne outstandingly to the gallery and fits to all model versions.

The complete new frontskirt/bumper impresses by its aggressive and distinctive visual appearance. Bigger air-intakes with fins as well as a front splitter with its own brake aeration award the Rinspeed X-treme a proprietary and typical look. Beefy wheel arches let the sporty SUV appear to be much wider and more dynamic. The side skirts fit elegantly into the existing side lines and connect homogenously the wide wheel arches. The rear skirt has received a difusor which diminishes the down force significantly. The two rear chrome exhaust tips are the high-light of the back end. The sporty exhaust system clearly suggests the ample power under the hood. The X-treme will bring up to 600 hp on the road.

The contact to the road is ensures by the enormous wheel-tire-combination in the typical Rinspeed design. The biggest available version is of the size of 11x23 inches. The 315/25-23 tires are especially approved for speeds of the 300 km/h. The air suspension is customized with an electronic module which lowers the SUV by 35 mm - the whole range covers 110 mm .

Exclusive leather interiors as well as customizing options as individual bucket seating, home entertainment systems and many other items round up the diversified program. [Source: Rinspeed]

The Rinspeed sQuba Dives Into Our Hearts

There's something about Lotuses that make designers want to submerge them in water, which is fine by us. While we've heard of no Lotus/Bond deals, the Rinspeed sQuba concept makes a fine heir to the swimming Louts Esprit that submerged in The Spy Who Loved Me. While these are obviously computer animations, a real version is going to debut at the Geneva Auto Show, though we're curious if it'll still have the carbon nano tubes that allow the driver and passenger to drive straight into the water without closing the roof. Awkwardly translated press release below the jump:

The worlds first real diving car with zero emission power

Is it just a clever computer animation or maybe more a fiction from a Hollywood movie? Or is it actually a real car sitting there? Many visitors to the upcoming Geneva Motor Show (March 6th thru 16th, 2008) will ask themselves just these questions when faced with the new Rinspeed creation "sQuba" - the worlds first real diving car. This astonishing concept vehicle from the renowned Swiss powerhouse for new designs and ideas looks almost like it just came out of a James Bond movie.

Its capabilities not only to drive on roads - and this also at a push of a button autonomously (thus without a driver, passenger or further assistance) - but also to agitate as an amphibious vehicle and to protrude to water depth of up to 10 meters (33 feet) go beyond the scope of many human virtues of imagination.

For Rinspeed boss Frank M. Rinderknecht the "sQuba" symbolizes the realization of a long-cherished dream and of movie fictions - of which perhaps the most noted out of the James Bond film hit "The spy who loved me". "And exactly thirty years later this amazing - yet at the time animated - film sequence materializes and becomes reality, in today's world", says Rinderknecht.

Definitely part of the material world is the power of the concept car: An electric motor with powerful torque drives the rear wheels. The propulsion on the water is ensured by two propellers in the stern and two powerful jet drives in the bow propel the vehicle under water while diving. With zero emissions, zero pollution in the seven seas of this world. The light weight body with components made of futuristic Carbon Nano Tubes encloses in a streamlined manner the driver and passenger who are supplied with fresh breathing air by the self-contained on-bord system.

A new and fascinating world is opening to the occupants of the "sQuba" which will remain most likely - as its predecessors - a unique and exclusive one-off vehicle. But: Attention guaranteed. [Rinspeed via World Car Fans]

One word, kid, plastics. That was the advice given to Benjamin Braddock, recent grad and schupper of proto-MILF, Mrs. Robinson in "The Graduate." What if he'd listened? What if he'd finished his PhD in materials science, moved to Switzerland, took a job with Bayer, and created a strong, lightweight, transparent plastic that Rinspeed tapped to build a transparent roadster called the eXasis. Now, in Geneva, he could look through the eXasis's sheer body and wonder if that's really what his parents' friend was talking about after all. – Mike Spinelli

Rinspeed released more info on its "glass" roadster concept, the eXasis. Not glass at all, really, the eXasis is made of cutting-edge plastics, including a transparent body and floor of a compound dubbed Makrolon by the chemists at Bayer. Recalling bullet-shaped racers of the 1960s, the eXasis gets its power from a 750 cc, turbocharged two-cylinder jobbie from Weber Automotive. Producing 150 hp, the motor's been set up to run on bioethanol. The whole contraption weighs but 1,653 lbs, giving it a weight-to-power ratio of around 11 lbs per horsepower. We'll see (through) it at the Geneva show next month. – Mike Spinelli

Rinspeed to Show "Glass Car" in Geneva

The Swiss concept-car scientists at Rinspeed are readying another experiment in materials chemistry for the Geneva show this year — this time in honor of their 30th anniversary. It's called the eXasis — a "glass car" made from the latest plastics. While the errant upper-case letter in its name denotes super high-tech, its transparent, cigar-shaped body and open wheels do so equally well, as designers reimagined the legendary Auto Union racers of the 1930s in the form of a modern Baja-1000 off-road vehicle (their words, not ours). It weighs only around 1650 lbs, and is powered by a supercharged, twin-cylinder 750 cc engine configured to run on bioethanol, which is like gas, only with more muesli. Click through for suitably inflated language after the jump. – Mike Spinelli

Press Release:

A "Glass Car" Made from Plastic

World premiere at the Geneva Auto Show 2007 for the Company's 30th Anniversary

Is it just a clever 3-D projection or maybe a mirage of a four-wheel art object? Or is it actually a real car sitting there? Some visitors to this year's Geneva Auto Show (March 8th thru 18th) will ask themselves just these questions when faced with the new fully transparent Rinspeed creation "eXasis." The insect-like body and even the floor pan of the seemingly "glass" concept car from the renowned Swiss powerhouse for new designs and ideas actually consist of a transparent high-tech plastic with a tinge of pale yellow.

The "eXasis" has open wheels, a cigar-shaped body with fore and aft tandem seating, and has elements of the legendary Auto Union race cars from the first half of the last century combined with a modern Baja-1000 off-road vehicle.

The transparency "dematerializes" the car to a large extent. Behind the seemingly fading matter the spirit of the "eXasis" reveals itself: The ideas, thoughts and imagination that were the basis of its development. For Rinspeed boss Frank M. Rinderknecht the "eXasis" symbolizes this development process, a process that takes immaterial spirit and turns it into matter, transforms a mere vision into a concrete car: "And in all its transparency the "eXasis" still seems as if it hadn't arrived fully yet in the material world."

Definitely part of the material world is the engine of the concept car: A compact and powerful two-cylinder 750-cc engine provides some 150 environmentally friendly horsepower for swift conveyance. Bioethanol that reduces CO2 emissions powers the tiny supercharged engine. With a projected vehicle weight of just 750 kilograms thanks to plastic lightweight construction each horsepower has to account for just five kilograms - on a level with a Porsche.

Altogether these figures give plenty of reasons to expect of loads of driving fun and numerous visionary technologies and innovations from Rinspeed's "eXasis." A very special thrill will be the view through the transparent floor pan - it will be an absolutely unique anniversary ride.

Auto mod house Rinspeed may be best known for such outrageousness as the Zazen concept, with its holographic brake light, and single-section roof dome fashioned by space-age materials by Swiss elves, but it also builds more accessable tuners. Take the new Cayman Imola (above), which sports a 997-Turbo-look body kit that includes a lowdown front dam, air intakes that could suck in low-flying geese, "king me" hood graphics and a high-design rear diffusor insert. It also gets headers, metal catalytic converters and stainless steel exhaust, five spoke aluminum wheels, suspension kit that's 25mm lower than stock and various manner of interior finery. Its Indy 4S sibling is Rinspeed's take on the Porsche 911 Carrera 4 & 4S. It gets the same treatment. Click through for more pics.

Frank Rinderknecht, CEO of Switzerland's bonkers tuning company, Rinspeed, recently drove the company's Splash amphibious prototype across the English Channel in 193 minutes, 47 seconds — a new world record for crossing — dodging freighters and supertankers to get 'er done. That feat landed him in the Guiness Book of World Records and solidified the company's status as being, as they say in Australia, completely arse over tit. Carscoop has the skinny.

Over the Over the Top: The Rinspeed zaZen

As the guy who invented Pop Rocks will tell you (from his villa in the South of France), just because you can do something, doesn't mean you have to do it, but why the hell not? Rinspeed's zaZen concept is the perfect example of that kind of thinking. A partnership with Bayer MaterialScience, which provided the outer-space plastics that make its Porsche-on-hallucinogens styling possible, the zaZen cut a compelling figure on the floor of the Palexpo Center (despite a frustrating series of display monitors that prevented unubstructed photos from all angles). In reality, Rinspeed's idea of Zen is so at odds with the actual practice of mind-clearing that shares its name that it might just be Zen-like by way of circular logic. Elsewise, it's more craziness from the guys who made being crazy the most normal thing of all.

Rinspeed to Show New Zen-themed Concept in Geneva

Those mad Swiss scientists up at Rinspeed are cooking up a new concept for the Geneva show that's Zen themed and typically high-tech. The zaZen, which appears to be a take on the Porsche 911, is yet another joint project between Rinspeed and plastics supplier Bayer MaterialScience. Among other developments, the zaZen sports a novel, holographic brake light and a contoured single-section roof dome fabricated from a polycarbonate dubbed Makrolon . That material can be made transparent or opaque at the touch of a button. Dashboard displays can be faded in and out as needed, and occupants sit in "glass-like" plastic seat shells tinted a "bright and friendly" orange. A self-healing clearcoat made up of tiny crystals protects and adds luster to the paint scheme. The Zen part comes from the company's bid to abandon preconceived notions of what a car can be. Personally, we've already spent the morning running around the house not thinking of "wolf," so we, you know, "get it."

Rinspeed to Show Indy-Inspired Porsche Tuner in Frankfurt

Those Swiss geniuses at Rinspeed announced they will show a new tuner Porsche at this year's Frankfurt show, the Indy, built from a Porsche 997 Carrera S and painted in American oval black-and-white (the white being metallic.) In addition to a surround of body skirting reminiscent of the 1973 RS Carrera, the Indy gets a lowered suspension setup and eight-piston brakes over copious rubber (Continental SportContact of 235/35 and 315/25). Deleted rear seats and Alcantara-topped steering wheel and shift knob complete the package. More from the Frankfurt floor.

What Will 007 Drive Next?

Forbes' Dan Lienert busts out with the prognostications like it ain't no thing, putting his mental weight to bear on what the next James Bond car could possibly be. His choices for 007's next whip? The Aston-Martin V8 Vantage, the Bugatti Veyron, the Bentley Azure, the new Jag XK and the amphibious Splash concept vehicle (pictured) from those head-cases over at Rinspeed.

We're thinking an Azure that could sprout legs and amble around like an AT-AT might be the way to go, leaving a shower of bomblets in its wake. Or better yet, was just the size of a freaking AT-AT. No...sadly, that's just too Moonraker for today's Bond.
