24 hours of lemons
Can you get a running Subaru Outback for under 500 bucks? Having a team full of accountants means that you can do some Enron-style bookkeeping and put a smile on the LeMons Supreme Court Justices' faces with your very convincing documentation (however good that theory seemed, it didn't quite work out quite that way in practice). UDMan talked to the Bean Counters Racing team; jump away to read their story.

The
R1e official unveiling dominated Subaru's press event yesterday, but a minor announcement was made that definitely caused my ears to perk up. Subaru is partnering with audio accessory maker Harman-Kardon to outfit the Subaru Legacy and Outback vehicles with high-end sound systems.

There's a lot of throwing up going on a little in mouths all over today. Shots of what looks to be the Subaru Impreza Outback, sporting a zero-cladding policy that's made way for a strange two-tone paint scheme most visible around the fenders and bumper areas, appeared earlier. So does the higher ground clearance do anything for the oft-maligned body shape? All signs point to, "ask again later." [

Subaru, flush with the success of a first-time 200,000-units-sold year in the United States, introduced the new "Flying Wing" front end design on the Legacy and Outback, a look which will eventually replace the unloved Flying Vagina grille across the line, we imagine. We — and the rest of Europe's motoring press — be getting our first view of the facelifted Subaru Legacy Outback, which went on sale in Japan earlier this year. Once described as "aggressive blandness" (hmm) the new design will appear in the continent's forecourts in the fall, when the new model arrives for sale. We'll see it in the states in '08. More after the jump.

As Subaru reps said at the New York auto show last April, the company is launching its SI-Drive system for the 2007 model year. The system's three-position knob lets drivers adjust engine performance for driving needs and conditions — from economical to sporty. Driving modes include "Sport Sharp," which delivers the bulk of torque up front, "Intelligent," which heightens fuel efficiency, and "a-hole," which makes the car to reach every toll booth first, come hell or merging traffic. Subaru confirmed yesterday it would include the system in premium models of its 2007 Legacy (Liberty in Australia) and Outback models, which will be available to interested knob twiddlers starting September 1, 2006.

Interestingly, on their restyled Legacy and Outback models (due out in Japan as of right now), the cats at Fuji Heavy Industries have decided to forego the Flying Vagina nose treatment in favor of a somewhat more restrained look that seems to recall Mazda, Ford and Acura all at once. In other words, it's a melange of aggressive blandness. Damned if you do and damned if you don't, eh Subie? The kids with the news from the lane that's not on the right have more pix and some press release crap that only Loverman and Texans might care about.
