NYC Cyclist Gives Cab-Hailing Tourists A High Five

Typically an act of frustrating desperation, a cyclist has turned hailing a New York City cab into a congratulation. He's probably trying to get people to think about cycling instead of taxis, but really he's just scaring commuters and tourists.

Why No One Drives In Manhattan

Yes, the New York subway is slow, crowded, and abrasive. But it would take 167 lanes of traffic to match its capacity, and we'd have to pave the East River to park. [Frumin.net]

The New York City Subway Of 1948

Embeded RFID Chips Add Big Brother To New York Driver's Licenses

For just $30 extra, New York state residents can opt for a new Enhanced Driver's License (EDL), complete with RFID chip. But why would you want to shill out that extra coin on top of the $50 you already have to pay for a normal license? The selling point is that the radio frequency identification chip in the EDL allows a humble state ID to act as a passport of sorts. It can be scanned by authorities to identify US citizens entering the state from Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean...though we're not sure exactly how you're supposed to get into those countries in the first place without an actual passport. What about privacy and security concerns? Oh, don't worry; the government has measures in place. More »

The Monticello Motor Club Opens, Still Probably Closed To You

When you've got the cash to get a supercar with the proper dash, you don't want to ruin it on the streets or, worse, share the track with some upper-middle classer in a Boxster S. That's where a membership at New York's Monticello Motor Club might come in handy. Following the model of the Autobahn Adobe and other tracks for the well-off speed freak, this particular facility takes the checkered flag for opulence. The 4.1-mile road track, which features 22 turns and generous runoffs to keep you and your AMG Black Series whole, is just the beginning of what this new club has to offer. More »

Vintage Trailers Brought Back To Life At Former Air Force Base

Having lived in the notorious Irvine Meadows West trailer park, which was all about Project Trailer Hell vintage tin, I can state that Airstreams pretty much suck for any sort of extended habitation. The cylindrical shape means that the interiors are cramped and storage areas are unusable. However, they sure look cool, and they're great for road trips. UDMan has discovered an operation in New York that restores old Airstreams- and other vintage trailers- on a former Air Force base. Make the jump to see all the photos and read UDMan's description.
