Top Gear Pits BMW M3 Vs. Lexus IS-F, We Translate Stig's Morse Code
If you had a chance to see last night's episode of Top Gear you'd have seen the four-door BMW M3 take to the track against the Lexus IS-F. You'd also see Stig take the IS-F for a power lap, again while listening to the sounds of Morse code. The inability to understand what Stiggie was saying / hearing due to all those dots and dashes was buggin' us, so we enlisted the help of one of America's preeminent practitioners of the code of dits and dahs — who also happens to be an avid Jalopnik reader (although he likes bikes more than cars for some reason. Jeesh, hasn't he heard the old maxim about "two wheels bad, four wheels good?" Whatever, we won't hold it against him). He's helpfully translated the two short bursts of circles and lines. Hit the jump for the full video as well as the translation. More » -

PCH, Mysterious Factory Racer Edition: Ferrari 360 Challenge or BMW E46 M3?
Welcome to Project Car Hell, where you choose your eternity by selecting the project that's the coolest... and the most hellish! Yesterday, a majority of you felt that the Porsche 928 would be a better LeMons car than the Lexus LS400, citing the alleged reliability of the big Toyota as a factor in the decision. Would a car designed to haul well-to-do realtors in utter comfort be reliable after a few hours of full-throttle hoonage, bashing into tire walls and other cars, even with Japanese engineering on its side? Only one way to answer that question! But maybe we should forget about homemade race cars for a moment and talk about factory race cars. Who hasn't toyed with the idea of waving the Magic Wand Of Legality over a factory race machine- say, one with an absurdly cheap price tag- and making it into a profoundly satisfying daily driver? How hard could it be?

BMW M3 CSL High-Performance Lightweight Canceled
Oh woe, oh terrible day, word comes down from Bavaria that the distilled essence of BMW, the 470 HP 2010 BMW M3 CSL has been canceled. BMW’s head honcho at the M division, Ludwig Willisch told CAR Magazine “Based on current numbers, there is most likely insufficient demand for the M3 CSL.” So there you have it, straight from the speedmeister's mouth. No symphony of lightness and power, no Germanic motoring nirvana, no CSL. Adding insult to injury, the M division will instead focus it's efforts on the X5 and X6. [CAR via [eGMCarTech] -

Dinan To Squeeze 638 HP V10 Into BMW M3, Laugh Manically
Like mad scientists splicing bits and pieces of animal carcasses together to create something unholy, Dinan is prepping a BMW M3 equipped with a 638 HP version of the BMW V10. The heart of this ludicrous M3 will be a 5.7 liter bored-and-stroked version of the 5.0-liter DOHC 40-valve V10 found in the BMW M5 and BMW M6. This engine swap is not unprecedented, as Hamann, Hartge and AC Schnitzer have done it before, but this will be the first time major engine modification will be involved. Look for this manic M3 to break sound barriers in the near future. [Modified L&E] More » -

BMW M3 Gets Face Lift For 2009, Now With 10% Less Ugly
The leaky sieve over at BMW has let slip official photos of the 2009 BMW M3 sedan and coupe. Both the E90 and E92 benefit from the 2009 BMW 3-series facelift, which means the bumpers, lights and interiors are cleaned up to make them a little less awkward. While this will probably really piss off people who just paid up to $100,000 for this year's model, we're big fans of the 2008 BMW M3, so I guess we're 10% bigger fans of this new model. More » -

BMW M3 Plowed Into House By Idiot Teen Driver
Potential idiot parents take note — the 2008 BMW M3 is a finely crafted, high-performance, German-engineered rocket sled. It is not a present to buy for your LA-area 19-year-old. Uday Is Gone, But Baghdad Car Freaks Still Have It Rough
Saddam Hussein's son Uday used to confiscate any cool car that caught his eye on the streets of Baghdad, so in those days it was best to drive the Kadett and leave the BMW stashed away. Those days are gone, but new dangers lurk for the brave Iraqi who wants to customize his ride. The LA Times has a story on three young Iraqis who have done their best under the circumstances; yes, we might cringe in horror at the sight of a pimped-out M3 or a Mustang convertible with a huge TURBO emblem on the hood, were we to run across such cars here in the US of A, but — given the context of 2008 Baghdad — we can't help but admire the determination these guys are showing. 2009/2010 BMW M3 Sedan
The power-hungry BMW-lovers at M3Post have caught the 2009/2010 BMW M3 Sedan out for a stroll, and it looks like the next model year of the BMW M3's getting a bit of a rear-end lift with some color, some lines and yes, some new taillights to match what we've been told to expect on the next 3-Series sedan. Other than the butt-lift on the four-door, don't expect a whole lot of other changes for the next M3. Well, other than that "Space Gray" paint job.

Hamann Kicks The E92 M3 Coupe Up A Notch... Or 35
While the majority of us would be happy with a standard M3, Hamann's apparently not as satisfied as the German tuning shop has just revealed a couple of serious tuning packages for the V8-powered E92 BMW M3 Coupe. The two blend all sorts of fun performance upgrades with enough cosmetics to make Mary Kay blush. The first tuning package increases the 4.0-liter V8's output to 435 HP and a slight boost to torque on the crank shaft. With the removal of the speed limiter, the M3 can go up to a top speed of 187 mph. The second kit called "Sportkit HM/M +35" raises output to 455 HP. This second package pushes the speedometer up to a speedgasmic 199 mph. As far as looks go, Hamann drops a black on black paint job, matching the rims to the dark-as-night skin. Gorgeous. The black knight certainly does return. More » -

2008 BMW M3, Part One
The 2008 BMW M3 puts the world around it in fast forward. No, this isn't some function hidden deep within the still befuddling iDrive or a secret performance setting achieved by hitting B, A, B, A, Select, Start; just an inherent ability to twist the world over its power dome and past its windscreen at a nearly impossible speed. Neither is this the kind of garden-variety performance achieved by the average big engine, small car formula. Remember how cheesy '80s action shows would speed up the tape during chase scenes? The resultant mix of unbelievably flat cornering and inexplicably rapid oncoming traffic just ended up being unbelievable and inexplicable. But not in this new M3. More » -

Franken M3 To Warp Space and Time When Complete
Imagine for a moment what would happen if you took the 500 HP V10 power train and suspension out of a 2008 BMW M5 and put it into a 1988 BMW M3. Stop salivating. This is exactly what the lunatics at Piper Motorsports are doing. The car is being outfitted with all the fun stuff from the M5 and none of the porky excess which bogs the super sedan down. When complete it will have all of the subframes, suspension, engine power and countless custom components. I will also probably have it's owners breath, as we're sure it will take it away. BMW Unveils M3 Convertible Again, This Time In New York, Will Cost $65,700
For those that need to see an M3 Convertible on American soil to believe it really exists, BMW just unveiled it in New York. The 414bhp, V8 supercar will set you back $65,700, a hefty $11,000 premium over the sedan and $8,000 more than the coupe. That extra chunk of change will get you a folding hardtop, the wind in your hair and a higher weight. The sedan and coupe will be available in dealers next week, the convertible later this year. Let's hope none of you are silly enough to pay $100,000 for one. More » -

Want To See Where The BMW 3-Series Is Built?
Here's a nice piece of BMW propaganda touting its love of ideas and stuff by way of architecture. The voice over is a little overwrought, but the content is pretty cool. This looks like none of the plants we've ever worked in, which mostly were dirty, messy places that smell like sour cutting oil and failure. But we've only ever worked for the big three, so what do we know. BMW's Leipzig plant is the birthplace of all BMW's which carry the 3-series genome, and apparently they went all out for the assembly plant of their bread and butter Bimmer. Guess this is the kind of thing which explains why the cars are so darn expensive. [BMW Wesbite] -

M-Power! Five Things We Know About BMW's Dual Clutch Transmission
Add another true automanual tranny to the growing list. Call it the M double-clutch transmission with DriveLogic. It's BMW's new 7-speed switchgear that's shipping with the new M3s, and likely will replace the divisive, largely poky and cumbersome — that is, without some serious futzing — M-Sequential (SMG / SMG II) automated manual. The SMG system uses a high-pressure hydraulic actuator to shift gears, with the latest version (i.e., SMG II) offering five automatic modes and six manual modes and shift times in around 80 miliseconds. In dual-clutch systems, like BMW's new system and VW/Audi's DSG, one clutch handles gears 1, 3, 5, 7 (and reverse) and the second handles 2, 4, 6 — they work alternately, engaging and disengaging in a complex dance that allows for uninterrupted upshifts at speeds of a few milliseconds. An algorithm takes into account throttle position, engine speed, road speed and shift mode in use when calculating shift management. What else do we know about the new M double-clutch transmission with DriveLogic? Click through. More » -
