Project Car Hell, 1961 Edition: Simca Aronde Or Pair-O-Lincolns?

The Cressida took the win over the Maxima in our Rear-Drive Japanese Sedan Hoonage Edition poll on Wednesday, though not by a decisive margin. Perhaps that's because the Cressida and Maxima are so similar to each other, but we're not going to have that issue today! 57Sweptside has found some hell projects that, while cool, don't have much more in common than the year of manufacture; 57Sweptside gets a coveted PCH Tipster T-shirt for his role in filling some lucky soul's garage with eternal damnation happiness!

A Jalopnik Study: Does Car Logo Badge Size Correspond With Buyer Bulge Size?

Did you ever notice how big badges on the front of cars are getting these days? Have you ever wondered whether it's out of a need for automakers to "compensate" for their prospective buyers lack of size? We did. So, trusty ruler in hand, we hit the dealer lots at the mega-motor-mall up the street to find out whether size really does matter and to answer the important question: Which automaker has the biggest badges, and do they correspond to the bulge in the pants of the male members of the target buying demographic? Let's find out. More »

1970 Lincoln Continental Mark III, Plus Bonus Lincoln Poll

Great big Detroit luxury machines, with two huge doors that swing out about 10 feet to the side when opened and a crude pushrod V8 with way more than 400 cubes under the hood. Aside from the low-single-digit gas mileage, what's not to love? The Lincolns of the 60s and 70s never quite sold like their Cadillac competition, but they had hoods like aircraft carrier decks and grilles carved from gigantic slabs of pure chrome. They were outrageous and beautiful, in a way the staid Caddy could never really pull off, and I wish I could find more of them parked on Alameda's streets.

Three Photographers, Seven Fords, One Mile-High City

So the DOTS Bonus Edition photos keep rolling in from every direction- and I'm doing my best to post them all- but the stockpile of car photos from Denver has reached absurd proportions. First there was Kitt on the south side, then EJacobs started shooting interesting old cars in the northwestern part of town; by this time I have a backlog of a dozen vehicles from each of them. To add to the fun, I get shipped to Denver for work every few months, so I can add my own photos to the list! Today, we've got one set of photos each from Kitt, Ejacobs, and me. The unifying theme: Old Fords! Make the jump for three more big galleries.

2009 Lincoln MKS, First Drive

When the powers-that-be over here at Jalopnik asked me to test drive a car for you boys, I was pretty excited. Finally, I thought, Jalopnik is learning to respect a woman's automotive point of view. And then Ray told me it was going to be the 2009 Lincoln MKS. Hmm. I'll admit, I have a bias against big cars that dates back to the need to parallel park my mom's minivan for my driving test. On the other hand, it's not like I get to drive a ton of "luxury cars" either, so I figured even if it wasn't to my taste, I could cheat on my Toyota Corolla for one day. Luckily, it was a really, really nice day, although I was sad I didn't get to see the rain-sensing windshield wipers in action, since those have always sounded really cool. Yes, that's right — while I might not have the the automotive knowledge set of the gentlemen of Jalopnik or say, Popular Mechanics, you know my Lincoln MKS review will make up for it with a certain panache you won't find here or there.

Dealers Worried Mercury To Go The Way Of The Dodo, Waiting For A Ford Clubbing

It can't be fun to be a Lincoln Mercury dealer right now. Not only do you have to endure your Cadillac Buick dealer friends showing off their relatively diverse and unique stable of new models, but there's no clear idea of what your future is going to hold. An article in the Detroit News features various dealers of Ford's more luxurious brands worried that there's nothing new in terms of Mercury models coming down the pipeline and that they're being phased out without anyone telling them about it. Ford insists there's no current plan to drop Mercury, despite the fact that the brand has dropped in sales by more than 30% in the last two years. Ford should announce the fate of Mercury by the fourth quarter of this year and there are a few things they need to consider. More »

2009 Lincoln MKS AWD, Lounging In Suburbia

Looks like reader James Kenney is in a prime location for catching first glimpses of new Ford products. After bringing us a look at that first picture of the 45th Anniversary Ford Mustang, the most over-the-top OMG-amazing-drop-dead-sexy Mustang variant since the one before it, he's managed to spot an actually sexy All-Wheel-Drive version of the 2009 Lincoln MKS. Sure, feel free to scoff along with us as the alphanumeric nomenclature annoyingly consumes another brand, but you can't argue with the sleek styling on the new Lincoln range topper. We hear these are running around with that TwinForce V6 already and can't wait to sample the goods, especially with all wheel drive in place to help put the power to the pavement.

2009 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid

As we start to head into the lazy sweltering days of summer, Death Valley becomes the perfect location for balmy weather testing — a must-have for everything from powertrain endurance testing to figuring out exactly how cold that A/C system gets. Thus, fertile ground for those of you looking to make a foray into car spy shooting. Take the above prototype caught by spy shooter and Jalopnik reader Dan Leathers. The shots show what may be a new but not entirely unexpected development out of Ford — a 2009 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. How did we gather it's a hybrid from just a glance at the shots? Well, it's a plausible explanation for why it'd be doing comparison testing with a Toyota Camry Hybrid.

Lincoln In Same Boat As Mercury, Won't Get Ford Flex Either

Wes and I spent yesterday at a very Flex-ible Ford event in the Big Apple, and before we hit the road, we had a chance to sit down with some other journalists and break bread with our new mishpacha, Ford's chief creative officer J "Boss Of Big Balls" Mays. While other journalists were busy munching on mozzarella and delicious turkey-n-cranberry baguettes, we were asking the hard-hitting questions designed to break through Mays' built Ford tough PR shell and get to the juicy nuggets of upcoming product knowledge he had inside. We used sly questions like "So J, will Mercury and Lincoln get a Flex to call their own?" More »

Project Car Hell: Porsche 928 or '58 Lincoln Continental?

What with all the racin' madness lately, I haven't had a chance to descend into the lake of burning 90-weight that is Project Car Hell for a few days. In our last matchup, we almost had an upset for the ages, with a Japanese car nearly beating a French car in the Dangel Peugeot Wagon versus V8 Fairlady poll. And that Peugeot was a tough one, too! You fans of Japanese Car Hell can feel proud... or ashamed, depending on how you look at it. Today we're getting away from the PCH Superpowers and mixing it up a bit, with a perennial German Choose Your Eternity favorite going up against a proud Detroit native.

1972 Lincoln Continental Mark IV

We've only seen a couple of Lincolns in this series (a '69 and a '77), and with ten Cadillacs so far, it's time to look at another of Ford's big luxo-machines. I found this '72 parked on the same block as the '70 Volvo 164 and the '87 BMW L6.

Day Of The Cat: 1973 Lincolns And Mercuries Greet The Dawn Of Malaise!

The cage door creeeeeaks open, (perhaps suggesting the rust that will soon assail most Malaise Lincolns and Mercuries), and the angry mountain lion struts out into a field full of parked cars. The Continental... the Marquis... Montego... Comet... Cougar... they're all here, and they're all packing more bloat and less power than ever before.

Lincoln Navigator Gets Sync Option, Ford Focus Not Included

For all those fans of the Microsoft Sync system not willing to strap into a Ford Focus to get it, rejoice and be glad, for now you can get it dealer installed in your new Lincoln Navigator. The announcement came today from the glass house that the luxo-barge will get the hand free all-in-one communication and entertainment system as a kit available for 2008 and forward models. Expect to see soccer moms without cell phone glued to ear but appearing to talk to themselves in no time. More »

Four Door Convertibles?

Earlier this morning we told you about the Cadillac CTS Convertible by CBI, mentioning it was a four door convertible which was "something rare for a convertible in this class." Inadvertently, we opened up a can of worms with that little phrase. Never one to let a little comment pass, Nick2ny asked us to name another four-door American convertible in this class. That involved a little work because, from the major manufacturers, we don't have much. American four-door luxury convertible? The best we can do is the 1961 Lincoln Continental convertible, which retained all four doors and a soft top that slipped all the way back into the trunk (a la´Skyliner). So that's one. More »

Just For Fun - Here's A Gorgeous '63 Continental

Just because we're here at the largest gathering of nerds in the western world doesn't mean there aren't totally slick cars to look at. Check out this gorgeous 1963 Lincoln Continental convertible dressed in black and run through the shops of Detroit area customizer Mobsteel. There is so much custom interior work here it doesn't even look like the original save the twin binnacle dash elements. Yes, we couldn't help ourselves to take pictures and no, our '64 won't end up looking like this, but it sure is a hot one isn't it?

Project '64 Continental: Want To Hear What A Seven Liter V8 Sounds Like?

As the weather has decided to release its icy grip on Michigan, work has resumed on the Lincoln, and while it's not yet a clean boulevardier, she is progressing. A full round of brake and suspension inspection is happening this weekend (which means making a list of all the bushings needed, to those unfamiliar with working on old cars) as well as cleaning up and painting some things that need a coat. Since those left coast boys working on that beater of a LeMons Volvo haven't gotten far enough to start their car up yet, I figured I'd fire up the Conti and perhaps raise the fervor of their build pace — let the low blows continue!

2010 Ford F-150's New 4.4L V8 Diesel Engine Gets Leaked To Internet

Remember that Ford dealer conference we learned about last week from our friends at PickupTruck.com? That's the conference where we heard about the scoop on Ford's upcoming and long-rumored off-road Ford F-150 Raptor program. Well, there's a second scoop for us from the Ford forum fan-boys at F150Online, spotted by the quick-eyed folks at PUTC — the first unofficial shot of Ford's upcoming 4.4-liter V8 Diesel engine that we've heard will make it's way into the 2010 Ford F-150. We're also told we should expect it to get dropped beneath the rails of the 2010 Ford F-250 and 2010 Ford F-350 to serve as the base-level diesel engine available. And why shouldn't it? Supposedly, this smaller oil-burning V8 will give a 20% boost... More »

Classic Hoon Of The Day: The Greatest Jump Ken Carter Never Made

The video above video, which we've shown you before, takes a little explanation but, for the uninitiated, it is well worth it. Ken Carter was the great Canadian stunt driver who, initially, undertook the usual types of challenges that you see here in the beginning of this clip. Eventually, he decided he wanted to make one great memorable rocket-powered jump over the St. Lawrence Seaway from Canada into the United States, a distance of nearly a mile. There are numerous attempts to get the funding, the weather and the materials to work. After years he think he's got his jump ready in a 1979 Lincoln Continental in an attempt weirdly similar to The Ramp BMW documentary. Things don't go right and he aborts five second before take-off.
