Burbank Envy: A Glimpse Inside Jay Leno's Garage

We were lucky enough to snag a tour of Jay Leno's Big Dog garage during the LA Auto Show. Supercars galore? Sure, but you know what? We want the Tatra. And the motorcycles. And the...oh hell, we want it all.

A random list of the things you will see in the gallery below:

Jay Leno

A wall of Vincent motorcycles

Some of the best garage art known to man

Mercedes-Benz PR man Geoff Day, a.k.a. Pressing the Light Fantastic

A fully operational Tatra T87

A very large steam engine that A) used to belong to Thomas Edison and B) works

Journalist extraordinaire Bengt Halvorson (Hi Bengt!) next to a Ford Shogun

A water-jet cutter

A rear-wheel-drive Oldsmobile Toronado

Ordinary, run-of-the-mill stuff like a McLaren F1.

Frankly, it was amazing. The cars and bikes are exactly as we'd have them — running condition, nice without being too nice, and correctly restored (or at least sympathetically screwed with in the name of speed). The collection of art and assembled mobilia — the larger pieces were painted by NBC's set department — is simply astonishing. The restoration and service shop is complete enough to make your toes curl. And in the middle of it all is an ordinary, down-to-earth machine nut who just happens to be one of the most famous men in the world.

The man may not be considered the king of late night anymore, but he sure knows how to collect cars.As we told you before when we first showed you the new cop car from Chevy, the Caprice PPV's built on the longer wheelbase Zeta platform, and will come with the 6.0-liter L76 V8 and inevitably a DI 3.6-liter V6. We're looking forward to driving one, but in the meantime we're impressed with the interior space.

Dirty Love: The Baja 1000 Toyota 4Runner

Toyota built a 2010 4Runner for last month's Baja 1000. The truck finished second in the Stock Mini class, and the Big T brought it to L.A. still covered in Mexican dirt. Amen.

Be honest: If you could afford it, you'd go desert racing too, right? Tear hell-for-leather across miles and miles of Mexican sand and gravel, hanging it out 'til the vacas come home? I would. Heck, if you wanted to go blast through the desert on SCORE's watch, I'd pay just to be allowed to help. Is that crazy? Tell me it's not crazy. Maybe it's crazy. Maybe I like rallying too much. Is that even possible?

Oh, right, the Toyota. (Sorry, got distracted.) Old Man Emu springs in back, Eibach coil-overs in front, Bilstein dampers at all four corners. Roll cage, transmission and power steering coolers, GPS, grab handles, blah blah blah — everything you'd expect is there. It's a race truck. It looks (and likely acts) like a race truck. This is not news.

To be honest, none of the details are important. The dirt, however, is. It means something. It's emotion; it's proof; it's real. It made me stop in my tracks and stare for ten minutes. I can't remember the last time I did that with a Toyota product. Hell, I can't even remember the last time I did that at an auto show, and I've been going to auto shows for a long, long time.

Thank you, Big T, for the dirt. Keep it up. And if you need some free labor, well, you know who to call.

BMW 5 Series GT Has Some Positive Elements

In case you were wondering, there are some redeeming characteristics to the BMW 5 Series GT. First, it's got frameless windows, which are always cool in our book. Also, with the half-hatch open, it looks like a giant guppy.

Well, according to Samuel, who's on the floor, there are three things you have to note about the 5 Series GT:

A) Frameless windows rock
B) With the half-hatch open, it looks like a giant guppy, or maybe a sucker fish, or maybe a chipper/shredder
C) It's ginormous and pointless

So there you have it, the three noteworthy things about the new 5 Series GT.

Hello, built-in grill; hello, mini fridge; hello, ice chest and sink. Will you be my friend? Can I cook in you? Are you the cutest little mobile cookspace that ever was? I think so!

Seeing this car — it's sitting on the Scion stand next to a couple of run-of-the-mill tuner xDs — I was struck with one question: What's wrong with me that this thing makes perfect sense?

(Also, a reverse-osmosis sink! I don't even know what that is, but it sounds fantastic.)

2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Special Edition: Because "Antidisestablishmentarianism" Was Taken

Subaru's STI Special Edition is essentially an ordinary STI with the suspension of the Japanese-market STI Spec C and the longest vehicle name in all of creation. Details, gallery, and press release below.

The differences between the SpeCial Edition — Hey, look! Clever typo! — and the ordinary U.S.-market STI are few. The Special Edition's front springs are 16 percent stiffer; its rear dampers have been stiffened by 29 percent; its rear anti-roll bar is one millimeter thicker, and its rear subframe bushings are stiffer. The eighteen-inch wheels come from the Spec C. Halogen headlamps replace the U.S. STI's HID units, and the standard six-disc CD changer is ditched in favor of a single-disc unit.

SUBARU INTRODUCES 2010 IMPREZA® WRX® STI® SPECIAL EDITION
AND IMPREZA WRX LIMITED AT THE LOS ANGELES AUTO SHOW

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 3, 2009 – Subaru of America, Inc. is introducing the 2010 Impreza WRX STI Special Edition at the Los Angeles Auto Show, which runs December 4-13 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Available in an initial limited run of 125 units, the WRX STI Special Edition features upgraded performance suspension (derived from the Japanese domestic market spec C), unique Aspen White paint and custom spec C wheels. Pricing will be announced at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Also at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Subaru is introducing the 2010 Impreza WRX Limited model, which adds a leather interior, standard moonroof and SIRIUS® Satellite Radio over the feature content of the Impreza WRX Premium model. Turbocharged excitement remains courtesy of the 265 HP, 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer engine powering Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system through a five-speed manual gearbox.

WRX STI Special Edition
The 2010 WRX STI Special Edition is aimed at the driving enthusiast who is willing to trade a few amenities to gain an extra measure of handling performance over the already extraordinary WRX STI. Suspension for the new version of this high-performance machine is adopted from the Japanese domestic market WRX STI spec C model, which adds a 1-millimeter thicker rear stabilizer bar, stiffer rear sub-frame bushings plus upgraded and retuned springs. The front springs are 16-percent stiffer, while the rear shocks have been stiffened by 29-percent.
Available in early Spring, the first 125 units of the 2010 WRX STI Special Edition will be painted in exclusive Aspen White, set off by the charcoal-colored 18 x 8.5 in. 14-spoke alloy wheels from the JDM WRX STI spec C. The WRX STI Special Edition will then become a regular production model later in 2010, available in standard colors.

The WRX STI Special Edition was developed by Subaru Tecnica International, the high-performance and motorsports subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. Compared with the standard 2010 WRX STI, the WRX STI Special Edition features halogen rather than HID headlights; a single-disc CD player / 4-speaker audio system instead of the 6-CD /10-speaker system; manual air conditioning in place of automatic climate control, and body color side mirrors.

All other aspects of the WRX STI Special Edition remain as on the standard model, including the 305-horsepower / 290 lb.-ft. turbocharged/intercooled Boxer engine, 6-speed manual transmission and a high level of driver-selectable powertrain- and dynamic handling-control systems. The car's bulged fenders and rear quarter panels, rear gate-mounted spoiler and aerodynamic ground effects give the WRX STI a direct link to Subaru competition cars. The hood scoop, brake-cooling air intakes and engine heat outlets are all functional.

The Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) version of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, which remains exclusive to the Impreza WRX STI, offers three selectable automatic performance modes in addition to six manual center differential locking settings. The WRX STI is in addition equipped with limited-slip front and rear differentials. The Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) stability and traction control system features three driver-selectable positions. On all WRX STI models, the 18-in. wheels are fitted with Dunlop SP600 245/40R18 tires.

The Brembo Performance Brake System employs ventilated 4-wheel Super Sport anti-lock (ABS) disc brakes with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). Side-curtain airbags and front seat side airbags are standard. The Incline Start Assist feature can momentarily prevent the vehicle from rolling backward when being driven away from a stop on an incline.

SUBARU HYBRID TOURER CONCEPT
The Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept Car is being used as a way to showcase a new Subaru design language and to highlight the development of a gas/electric hybrid system based on Subaru's boxer engine and Symmetrical AWD. Subaru announced that it will launch a hybrid car in 2012.

The most striking feature of the concept car are its unique gull-wing doors that emphasize its spacious interior. The interior highlights a grand touring concept focused on interior volume and comfort. It features four independent seats with open spaces surrounding the occupants. Through clever packaging of the AWD system, a flat floor design is created allowing increased leg room for rear seat passengers.

Powering the Hybrid Tourer is a 2.0-liter Horizontally-Opposed direct fuel-injection turbo gasoline engine that improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions. The turbo has been designed to improve engine responsiveness and environmental friendliness and utilizes Subaru's Lineartronic (CVT) mated to a new Hybrid system that incorporates Symmetrical AWD. The powertrain features a unique gas/hybrid two-motor system with an electric power/drive motor in the front and another drive motor in the rear. The electric motors are powered by new high-performance lithium batteries.

At start-up and extremely low speeds when fuel efficiency is low, such as when driving the car into a garage, the rear electric motor is used primarily to allow driving without engaging the gasoline engine. During normal driving, the front engine is primarily used. Under full acceleration, the rear motor assists the driving power of the engine to achieve advanced driving performance. When accelerating uphill, the front motor, which is normally used as a power generator, transfers power to the front axle for improved performance. The Hybrid Tourer Concept also implements a stop/start system that stops the engine when the car comes to a halt to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption.

About Subaru of America, Inc.
Headquartered in Cherry Hill, N.J., the company markets and distributes Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive vehicles, parts and accessories through a network of nearly 600 dealers across the United States.
2010 Hyundai Tucson: Swoopy Comes To Compact SUVs

The 2010 Hyundai Tucson is an attempt for the brand to emerge from also-ran status in the compact SUV battle with flowing lines, better materials and more competitive equipment. Will it do the job? Well, maybe.

The new Tucson brings an entirely new design inside and out, boasting Hyundai's new "Fluidic Sculpture" design language. It's used to great effect on the Tucson, actually able to create a compact SUV one might call sleek. Unfortunately the nose of the trucklet is a bit on the ungainly side and takes away from the handsomely styled body.

Inside, things are basically okay, although the styling of the dash is a little weird. Front and rear passengers have more than ample room and the optional massive sunroof gives things a light and airy feel. There's plenty of gadgetry including a touch screen infotainment screen with satellite radio, Bluetooth and in-dash CD changer.

The Tucson launches with the same motivation you'll find under the hood of the 2011 Sonata, the Theta II 2.4-liter direct injection four cylinder and like the Sonata will be available with both an automatic and a manual transmission, which is becoming exceedingly rare in the segment. Fuel economy isn't too shabby either, with expected economy coming in at 23/31 MPG city/highway. Optional is a new all-wheel-drive system which includes Hill Decent Control and Hill Start Control for those trips down scary dirt roads just outside of town.

The Tucson rides on MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension systems with col springs all around and bigger diameter but hollow anti-roll bars to save weight. Speaking of weight, despite being 3.3 inches longer and considerably better in every way than the outgoing model, the Tucson comes in at 61 lbs lighter, a trend we'd be happy to see adopted by everyone.

Speaking of everyone, Hyundai is right in being proud of their new model. It's a strong effort and puts a lot of the competition to shame. Conspicuously absent in all the comparisons though are GM's Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain offerings, which have better interiors, higher fuel economy with optional V6's. So for consumers, the bottom line is the market just got more crowded with another worthy competitor added to the field, but for Hyundai, it's going to be a dog fight.

ALL-NEW TUCSON DELIVERS BETTER FUEL ECONOMY AND MORE POWER

Los Angeles, Dec. 3, 2009 – In 2010, a revolutionary new Tucson joins the rapidly evolving Hyundai product line. The sleek crossover from Hyundai, with its athletic European design, strikes a stark contrast from its predecessor and improves in every functional area, from its roomier cabin with extra cargo space to its leap in fuel economy and technology. Tucson features the company's "Fluidic Sculpture" design language and is the first vehicle in Hyundai's 24/7 version 2.0 product initiative (seven all-new models by the end of 2011).
The all-new Tucson is the first Hyundai CUV (Crossover Utility Vehicle) to be designed and engineered in Europe at Hyundai's Frankfurt-based design and technical centers. It features precedent-setting engineering including advanced weight saving technology and the eco-efficient Theta II 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine delivering up to 31 mpg on the highway. True to Hyundai form, the Tucson applies life-saving safety technologies as standard equipment while offering, for the first time, Downhill Brake Control (DBC) and Hillstart Assist Control (HAC). Likewise, to keep its passengers informed and comfortable Tucson integrates Hyundai's first panoramic sunroof, touch-screen navigation and a Bluetooth® hands-free phone system.

European Design

Key attributes of Hyundai's Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy are the athleticism and sophistication that Tucson demonstrates through its flowing lines, full surfaces and muscular presence. This athletic design language is highlighted by bold, dynamic graphic elements such as the new Hyundai family hexagonal front grille, aggressive lower air intake, sculptured hood creases, swept back headlights, sleek greenhouse and wraparound taillights. Chrome grille accents and door handles lend sophistication to the top-of-the-line Tucson Limited.
Conceived in a global collaboration among Hyundai's U.S., Korean and European advanced product groups, with design execution led by the Frankfurt studio, the new Tucson was developed as an urban cruiser. It is tough and compact for life in the city, yet sleek and agile for out-of-town travel.

The Tucson combines dynamic, sculpted, performance-oriented styling with thoughtful everyday utility to create a vehicle that will change the way consumers, especially younger car buyers, think about compact crossovers.
With an overall length of 173.2 inches, a width of 71.7 inches and a height of 66.3 inches (with roof rails), Tucson has a great stance and road presence. The design team fused a light, elegant and sporty upper body with belt lines flowing off both the front and rear wheel arches, to a tough, planted lower body so that it is assertive in the way it sits on the road.

The profile of Tucson features a sports car-like theme with a double-zigzag treatment for the wheel arches that wrap around the available Euroflange 18-inch alloy wheels. The concave sills have a wedge-shaped profile that extends rearward and wraps around into the rear bumper, a first of its kind design in a vehicle of this type. The profile is further enhanced by modern silver roof rails.

With high-mounted taillights, multi-surfaced glass and a sculpted bumper, the rear of Tucson also incorporates dynamic design elements.

2010 Tucson 61 Pounds lighter than the outgoing model despite being three inches longer
The 2010 Tucson is 3.3 inches longer and one inch wider than its predecessor, yet 61 pounds lighter
2010 Tucson has a longer wheelbase and overall width than CR-V, Escape and Forester to deliver more packing efficiency
Body stiffness is 38 percent greater than Rogue
World-class weight efficiency was one of the program targets for the Tucson engineering team. In fact, the 2010 Tucson leads all of its competitors in weight efficiency. Hyundai engineers also targeted leadership in power-to-weight ratio. Having these targets paid huge dividends in both performance and fuel economy.

The Tucson's widespread use of high-strength steel provides increased strength at a lower body weight. High-strength steel allows the four-wheel independent suspension to work optimally. At 3,203 pounds for an automatic transmission model, the Tucson is lighter than its competitors, while offering more interior room than Rogue and Escape, with body-bending rigidity 38 percent higher than the Rogue. The Tucson owes its 31 mpg estimated EPA highway rating to its weight efficient unibody architecture.

FUN-TO-DRIVE
The 2010 Tucson's athletic shape is now complemented with more agile handling, responsive steering and improved body roll control. These enhancements make the new Tucson more fun-to-drive. Tucson uses MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension systems for more precise wheel control and a smoother ride. All four wheels are controlled by coil springs and fade-resistant gas-charged dampers. Stabilizer bar diameters have also increased. The front suspension now has a new 25 mm hollow stabilizer bar to save weight versus the predecessors 21 mm solid stabilizer bar. The rear suspension has a new 18 mm solid stabilizer bar versus the predecessors 14 mm stabilizer bar. Larger stabilizer bars keep the vehicle very flat during cornering and help provide quick turn-in response.
Rack-and-pinion Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS) also contributes to the Tucson's nimble and refined handling dynamics while saving fuel and reducing interior noise. The MDPS system uses the vehicle's electrical system for power (unlike the older hydraulic system), allowing for increased fuel economy and calibrated steering efforts through all vehicle speed ranges.
Due to the suspension geometry and wider track width that enables greater turn angles, Tucson's turning circle is 34.7 feet – an advantage Tucson drivers will appreciate in their daily driving and parking. In fact, Tucson's turning diameter bests Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.

TUCSON DELIVERS BETTER FUEL ECONOMY THAN CR-V
The Tucson was engineered to be more fuel efficient than its predecessor and chief competitors like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. The 2010 Tucson accomplishes this while being 3.3 inches longer and one inch wider than its predecessor and having a longer wheelbase than Honda CR-V, Ford Escape and Subaru Forester
Tucson features the Theta II 2.4-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder engine. The Theta II engine delivers about the same amount of power and acceleration as its predecessor's V6 engine with 20 percent better fuel economy than the old four-cylinder engine. In fact, the Tucson is more fuel-efficient than Honda CRV, Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape four-cylinder engines boasting an impressive estimated 23 mpg city/31 mpg highway fuel economy rating with the available six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC® and front wheel drive. Tucson features low rolling resistance silica tires to contribute to the 31 mpg highway. With AWD (All-Wheel Drive), Tucson delivers an estimated 21 mpg city/28 mpg highway exceeding the primary competitors AWD versions including Subaru Forester.

The Theta II is rated at 176 horsepower (26 percent more than its predecessor) and 168 lb.-ft. of torque. This high-tech, all-aluminum, 16-valve engine features Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) on both camshafts and a Variable Induction System (VIS) for better engine breathing. In the green states, the 2010 Tucson is certified as a Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) which means it is as clean as a hybrid.

For the 2011 model year, Hyundai will introduce a high-mileage Blue model. The Blue model will be powered by a Theta II 2.0-liter engine that delivers better power and fuel economy than the 2009 Tucson Beta four-cylinder engine. The 2.0-liter Theta-II has shed over 22 pounds from its previous iteration. For better fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, the 2.0-liter Theta-II also gets Dual CVVT (intake and exhaust camshaft phaser) while Theta-I was equipped with only CVVT on the intake camshaft. Major improvements also begin with the application of a two-stage Variable Intake System (VIS) which enables switching between long and short intake manifold resulting in an across-the-board performance increase. To reduce internal friction, engineers have applied a Diamond-Like-Coating (DLC) to the top surface of the valve tappets resulting in improved fuel efficiency. Engineers also expended considerable time and effort optimizing the oil pressure to achieve an ideal balance between durability and fuel economy.

Tucson will join the Blue lineup of vehicles that includes Accent and Elantra. Tucson Blue will deliver outstanding fuel economy without adding hundreds of dollars to the price. In fact, the "Blue" model will be priced lower than other Tucson models, assuring it will be both efficient and economical. Hyundai is focused on achieving an excellent mpg-per-dollar ratio with the Tucson Blue model. Fuel-efficient modifications will likely include low-rolling-resistance tires, enhanced aerodynamics, revised engine calibrations and reduced final drive ratios to deliver even higher mileage and lower emissions. The new Tucson high mileage edition will be identified with unique "Blue" badging.

FUEL ECONOMY INNOVATIONS
To help Tucson drivers get the most out of their vehicles, Hyundai added a standard trip computer and economy indicator. The trip computer provides distance to empty, average fuel consumption, average vehicle speed, elapsed time and instant fuel economy. The "Eco Indicator" on automatic transmission models nestled between the speedometer and tachometer displays a green LED light in accordance with fuel-efficient driving behavior. Fuel savings in the range of 15 to 17 percent are attainable with the automatic Eco Indicator. Manual transmission models have a shift indicator to inform drivers of the optimal time to upshift and downshift. Fuel savings in the range 7 to 9 percent are attainable with the manual Eco Gear Shift Indicator.
Further gains in fuel efficiency have been realized by the Motor-Driven Power Steering system which delivers excellent responsiveness and accurate handling.

SIX-SPEED AUTOMATIC AND MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS
Hyundai's commitment to making the Tucson extremely fuel efficient continues with a six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC® manual control or a standard six-speed manual transaxle.
Hyundai's all-new six-speed automatic transaxle helps the company meet its goals of improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. Shifts are silky-smooth with an option of manual control through the SHIFTRONIC feature. Designed for transverse engine applications in passenger cars and SUVs, the new compact transmission puts Hyundai into an elite class of auto manufacturers who have designed their own proprietary six-speed automatic transmissions. The strength of the design is its unique layout which makes it smaller, more compact and lighter than any other six-speed on the market today.
For the customer, the new six-speed delivers a performance edge. In this application (FWD/A/T), it helps bring a 24 percent gain in highway fuel economy (31 mpg versus 25 mpg in the ‘09).
There is no dipstick in the gearbox because it is filled with automatic transmission fluid that is good for the life of the vehicle under normal usage conditions, thereby reducing maintenance costs.
Developed over a four-year period, this new six-speed automatic is 26.4 pounds lighter than Hyundai's five-speed. It also is 1.6 inches shorter and considerably simpler having 62 fewer parts, which is a key to increased durability, lighter weight and lower cost.
When it comes to transmissions, more gears are definitely better. The addition of a sixth gear enables closer spacing between gear ratios providing a better balance of performance and fuel economy while the wide overall gear ratio helps deliver strong acceleration.
The gearbox has three planetary gearsets and a unique flat torque converter which shortens the unit's overall length by 0.47 inches. Four pinion differentials improve durability and further minimize size.
Another example of engineering ingenuity is found in the design of the hydraulic pressure control unit. Because there are always slight manufacturing deviations from one solenoid valve to the next which cause fluctuation in the hydraulic pressure and affect shift precision and quality, the transaxle features cleverly integrated adjustment screws in the valves which enable each of the eight valves to be calibrated at the factory. This feature ensures stable hydraulic pressure at any shift point which facilitates a high degree of precision and control needed to deliver fast, smooth and precise shifts throughout the rpm range.

CAPABLE FOR OUT-OF-TOWN TRAVEL
To make the Tucson even more versatile, Hyundai engineers added an advanced electronic AWD system designed by JTEKT. The AWD system will automatically activate under any driving condition when needed, distributing the power equally and optimizing driving performance. Under normal driving, the system only distributes power to the front wheels thereby reducing fuel consumption. The system includes a driver-selectable AWD lock allowing for a 50/50 torque split between the front and rear wheels for off-road and very slippery conditions.
For even more driver control, the 2010 Tucson features Hyundai's first Hillstart Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Brake Control (DBC). HAC is designed to minimize rolling backwards on steep ascents. By selecting the DBC switch, the Hydro-Electronic Control unit manages the wheel speed sensors, steering angle sensor and acceleration sensor to maintain control and speed on steep declines without having to use the brake. Neither of these controls are available on CR-V, Escape or Rogue and are typically found on luxury SUVs with much higher price tags.

Thoughtful Interior Design
Inside, the five-seat Tucson offers a commanding view of the road and evokes an adventurous ambience that is also laid-back and relaxing. The needs of the driver are fully accommodated, with the interior blending aspects of the outdoors and an urban lifestyle. For example, Hyundai's first panoramic sunroof brings the outside "inside" for all passengers.
An X-shaped visual theme is repeated across numerous areas of the cabin while metal paint accents provide flashes of visual brilliance.
Shapely seats feature center panels trimmed in breathable fabric with attractive and functional cushion side bolsters, plus additional lateral support for occupants' shoulders. On the insert of the cloth seats, there is a hexagonal pattern stitched into the fabric matching the new front grille design.
The long wheelbase and generous width of the Tucson, combined with Hyundai's expertise in interior packaging, have produced an interior that delivers class-leading rear legroom and improved headroom. These improvements were accomplished while lowering the overall height of the vehicle. The Tucson now has more passenger volume than Rogue and Escape at 101.9 cubic feet. Tucson's cargo capacity is 13 percent greater than its predecessor. In fact, Tucson has more interior volume than Acura RDX, and more cargo volume than Infiniti FX. The spacious cabin on Tucson Limited is further enhanced for all passengers by Hyundai's first available panoramic sunroof with UV blocking. The front panel of the sunroof can either tilt open or open completely by sliding up and over the rear panel. An anti-pinch system guards against injuries. Finally, with the extra wheelbase length, Hyundai engineers were able to expand front seat tracks allowing taller drivers a comfortable seating position.
The high-tech cockpit comes standard with Hyundai's signature blue lighting, power windows, power door locks, fold-away mirrors and remote keyless entry with alarm and panic button. Bluetooth hands-free phone system with voice recognition and steering wheel audio and cruise controls are also available. Another premium feature in the Tucson Limited is a CleanAir Ionizer that automatically cleans the air when the heater or air conditioner is running.
Other available features include leather seating surfaces, heated front seats, power driver seat with lumbar support, automatic headlights, side repeater exterior mirrors, front wiper de-icer and dual front automatic temperature control.
Audiophiles will love Tucson's 160-watt AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system with six speakers. This system includes XM Satellite Radio® and iPod®/USB auxiliary inputs as standard equipment. When an iPod or flash drive is connected through the USB port, which is located in the storage tray, not only does it play music through the vehicle's six-speaker audio system, but it also charges the iPod and allows the driver to access tracks with the steering wheel audio controls. This system also allows both driver and passengers to easily view song/artist/title information and control the music from the audio head unit rather than only the iPod itself.
The 2010 Tucson can be further upgraded with an optional navigation system with rearview camera. Shifting into reverse automatically turns on the rear-view camera that provides a wide-angle view reducing the risk of accidents. This navigation system also provides Bluetooth streaming audio capability. This easy-to-use unit can be controlled via a 6.5-inch LCD touch-screen or voice-activation by headliner-mounted microphone. The voice recognition allows the user to control the navigation system, audio system and phone commands. The system comes matched with the 360-watt premium audio system that includes an external amplifier and subwoofer. It plays compact discs, accesses digital music files employing Bluetooth streaming audio or allows driver and passenger to access their personal listening devices through the iPod/USB/auxiliary inputs. Bluetooth audio wirelessly streams music from a phone to the audio system. And with a Bluetooth-enabled phone, a local restaurant can be called for reservations before plotting the route. The XM Satellite Radio interface is also integrated into the navigation unit and features channel logos and real-time NavTraffic with detour function. XM Satellite Radio and NavTraffic service are complimentary for the first 90 days.

STORAGE GALORE
The 2010 Tucson features a total of 19 different storage places and drink holders:
Console storage tray
Glove box
Overhead sunglass storage
Armrest storage compartment
Two front seat drink holders
Two rear center armrest drink holders
Four bottle holders – one in each door
Four map pockets – one in each door
Two seatback pockets
Cargo area storage tray

Not only does the Tucson feature all these storage options, but Hyundai engineers have improved them over the previous model. The center console has been enlarged to 370 cubic inches (an increase of 205 cubic inches). The height of the rear cargo screen has been raised by almost three inches for more storage, plus a tray has been added to keep things organized. The cargo area also features a dual-sided cargo floor with tough plastic on one side for messy items and carpet on the other. The bottle holders even have grips to make sure the bottle doesn't tip over.

Advanced Standard Safety Technologies: PART OF HYUNDAi'S ASSURANCE COMMITMENT

The 2005 Tucson was the first Hyundai model to feature standard ESC (Electronic Stability Control) upon its launch in fall 2004. It was also the first vehicle under $20,000 with standard ESC and six airbags. The Tucson started Hyundai's approach to combining state-of-the-art safety and affordability and this approach lives on in the 2010 Tucson. The Tucson is loaded with life-saving standard safety features including ESC with traction control, six airbags and active front head restraints. Its braking system features four-wheel disc brakes controlled by an advanced four-channel ABS with Brake Assist, providing maximum braking force when a panic stop is detected, and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) to optimize brake performance with uneven weight distribution.

ESC compares the driver's intended course with the vehicle's actual response. If needed, ESC then brakes individual front or rear wheels and/or reduces engine power to help correct understeer or oversteer. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) studies show SUVs equipped with ESC experience 67 percent fewer single-vehicle crashes, and 63 percent fewer single-vehicle fatalities. In addition, a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found that ESC reduces the risk of all fatal collisions by 52 percent and the risk of fatal single-vehicle rollovers of SUVs by 80 percent.

The Tucson is engineered to provide its passengers with multiple defensive safety layers. The steel unibody has integrated crumple zones and a high-tensile front sub-frame designed to work together to reduce the forces that typically reach the passenger compartment. Particular attention has been paid to increasing the stiffness of the front side members which have been enlarged and straightened. Also, the center pillars serve as the anchors of a new ring structure which improves overall side structure stiffness while also creating more room for the door armrest and seat. All four doors also have internal guard beams to protect passengers in a side-impact collision.

The entire body shell has been made stiffer and lighter thanks to its extensive use of ultra-high tensile strength steel, which comprises 68.9 percent of the shell compared to its predecessor's 57.3 percent. Also, the use of Tailor Welded Blanks (TWB) has been expanded on key structural members. TWB assemblies combine steels of different thickness and grades using a sophisticated laser welding and stamping process to achieve an optimal stiffness-to-weight ratio. TWBs reduce body weight while enhancing crash energy management. These safety systems are expected to earn the 2010 Tucson NHTSA's top five-star crash test rating for front and side impacts.
Tucson's standard front-seat active head restraints help prevent whiplash by automatically reducing the space between a front occupant's head and the head restraint during certain rear collisions and are highly recommended by safety organizations such as the IIHS.

The Tucson's passenger restraint systems also help minimize injury. Three-point belts are provided at all five seating positions, and the front seatbelts have pretensioners and load limiters. There are two outboard rear Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) child-seat anchors.

Elongated flush-mounted headlamps not only add a strong sense of style but also feature projector beam lenses for improved night-time driving safety. Side mirror housings have been modified to reduce wind noise and also feature an integrated repeater lamp for improved visibility on the Limited trim.

A total of six airbags are positioned in the Tucson's interior. Dual advanced frontal airbags are complemented by front seat-mounted side-impact airbags and roof-mounted side-curtain airbags with new rollover sensors that cover both the front and rear seat rows. The combination of side and curtain airbags, which help protect the head and body during side impacts, can reduce fatalities by more than 45 percent, according to the IIHS.
Tucson also features a standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) which alerts drivers if one or more tires are under inflated.

WARRANTY
The 2010 Hyundai Tucson is protected by the Hyundai Advantage, America's Best Warranty. Coverage includes five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper protection,
10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, and seven-year/unlimited mileage anti-perforation coverage. In addition, Tucson buyers receive 24-hour roadside assistance coverage at no extra charge for five years (no mileage limit) and that service includes emergency towing, lockout service and limited coverage for trip-interruption expenses. There is no deductible on any of these coverages.

QUIET CABIN
Extensive work was done to isolate sounds and eliminate vibrations. The all-new 2010 Tucson is discernibly quieter both at highway speeds and at idle than its predecessor. Booming noise is reduced thanks to a sub-frame dynamic damper while the rear luggage area gets extra soundproofing to isolate exhaust sounds. Road noise has been minimized by improving stiffness in the front and rear struts, rear trailing arm and the spring sheet.

Engineering & Manufacturing
The Tucson is built in the Ulsan plant in South Korea. Known by the project name LM, the Tucson took 36 months and $225 million to develop. Tucson has been one of the most popular Hyundai models with more than one million units sold worldwide since its launch in 2004.

COLORS
The 2010 Tucson is offered in nine colors with an optimum mix between lighter and darker colors to satisfy regional preferences. The colors are Cotton White, Diamond Silver, Graphite Gray, Ash Black, Garnet Red, Iris Blue, Aurora Blue, Chai Bronze and Kiwi Green. Three interior colors Black, Taupe and Saddle will be available.

AVAILABILITY
Mass production of the Tucson started at the Ulsan factory for the United States market in October 2009 with sales starting in December 2009.

SMALL CUV Landscape
Thanks to their all-around functionality and value, small crossover utility vehicle (CUV) sales are projected to grow at a rate far above the industry average through 2014. These CUVs are among the fastest growing segments on the market today due to their convenient size, car-like refinement and good fuel economy relative to larger SUVs. Fueling this growth are seven all-new model introductions through 2014. The Tucson with a host of unique and attractive features positions Hyundai front and center in this booming segment.

HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA
Hyundai Motor America, headquartered in Fountain Valley, Calif., is a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Co. of Korea. Hyundai vehicles are distributed throughout the United States by Hyundai Motor America and are sold and serviced through more than 790 dealerships nationwide.

2010 Mercedes ML450 Hybrid: Quick Drive

The 2010 Mercedes ML450 Hybrid is the first full hybrid vehicle from Mercedes and, to better understand the experience of owning one, I sat in horrendous Los Angeles traffic for an hour.

Having driven the ML320 in diesel trim, I've never been convinced of the need for something like a hyrbid in the lineup. But it's what buyers want and the ML is a good platform for the company to test out their first full system.

This is an Atkinson cycle V6 with 279 HP and a pair of electric motors. Total power output is a robust 340 HP, giving it V8-like juice with a considerably better 21/24 MPG; the 2010 ML350 BlueTec diesel returns 18/25. The only trim this is available in is 4MATIC permanent AWD, which hurts it in terms of fuel economy but responds to market desires in this segment.

On the road it's clear traffic was maybe the best choice for driving this, as you get to experience the frequent starting-und-stopping and gobs of brake regeneration. Other than the fuel economy meter and "eco" or "sport" settings, the concept behind this hybrid is to make you feel good about yourself without paying for it in terms of driving feel.

Compared to clunkier systems, this stop/start engine is almost unnoticeable but for a slight kick in certain quick starts. Brake feel is fantastic, without a hint of regeneration. It allowed me time to act like a real LA driver and scream at others while tweeting about Tiger's mistress.

Overall it drove just like an ML but without the rush of torque you get in the diesel. If you must have a Mercedes SUV with a "Hybrid" badge, you can lease one (Mercedes isn't letting anyone buy one yet). Our advice? Put a hybrid sticker on an ML350 diesel instead.

New Jaguar XJ Stars In Upcoming Jay-Z Video

At a Jaguar event last night, the big news was a peak at the video Jay-Z is shooting with one of only six 2010 Jaguar XJ's in the world. And he customized it! Yay! Exclusive sneak peak video below.

Remember what "Hard Knock Life" did for sales of G-wagens and Annie cast recordings.

Having sat in an XJ for the first time, other than a few slightly questionable material choices, it's quite impressive. Large, stylish, comfortable like a Jag but without the feel of being stogies in a giant humidor.

2011 Kia Sorento: Signed, Sealed, Delivered

Hundreds and hundreds of signatures. Every single person who helped build the first Kia Sorento scrawled their name on its sheet metal. Pride, thy name is brand-new (and surprisingly attractive) Korean SUV.

The press conference was interesting. Like most new-car reveals, there were speeches discussing the "all-American" nature of the product, scripted banter, and a handful of people who had something to do with the vehicle in question. There were also two employees from Kia's Georgia manufacturing facility. One of them was a sassy woman with a Southern accent who sang — not quite off-the-cuff, but close enough — Bonnie Raitt's "Somethin' To Talk About." It was a cute touch. (Talkin' bout Kiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, indeed.)

Want to know more about the new Sorento? Press release below.

ALL-NEW 2011 KIA SORENTO CUV

All-New CUV Brings Immense Amount of Style, Value and Power to Segment

• First U.S.-built Kia vehicle offers consumers best-in-class power along with numerous upscale creature comforts

• Newest Kia vehicle offers modern design, multiple technology and safety features

LOS ANGELES, December 2, 2009 – Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced the official North American debut of the all-new Sorento crossover utility vehicle (CUV) during a press conference at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show. The first vehicle to be built at the all-new, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG) in West Point, Georgia, Sorento encompasses both the brand's signature design cues as well as its distinct combination of value, safety and style. Coming to market in early 2010 as a 2011 model-year vehicle, the all-new Sorento presents consumers with a well-equipped, well-appointed CUV with best-in-class power suited perfectly for the fun, dynamic and discerning driver.

With a streamlined and attractive look, the new Sorento represents a modern CUV that is just the right size for today's consumer. Completely redesigned for 2011, the all-new Sorento now employs a unibody design with the ability to comfortably fit up to seven passengers, offering more space and ride comfort than the previous-generation model. Prominently displaying the signature tabbed grille and wraparound headlamps soon to be seen on all Kia models, Sorento offers a more aggressive stance and sleeker profile than the previous version.

Confident and Contemporary Exterior
Based on the KND-4 concept shown during the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show, Sorento offers the same swept-back lines and dynamic presence as the concept vehicle. With an angled window line, large flared-back headlamps, prominent fog lamps and rounded nose, the all-new Sorento clearly belongs to the Kia family and effortlessly conveys strength and authority. The view from the rear offers the same forceful attitude with a rounded back and tail lamps set powerfully within the rear lift gate.

Available in base, LX and EX trim levels, the versatile CUV offers tasteful exterior features on all three including 17-inch alloy wheels with 235/65R17 tires and wheel moldings, while moving to the LX trim includes standard body-color heated outside mirrors with integrated LED turn signal indicators. All EX trims offer standard 18-inch alloy wheels outfitted with 235/60R18 tires, automatic headlamps, fog lamps (optional on LX trims) and a rear spoiler. Optional for LX and EX trims are roof rails for those looking to spend a weekend away or endeavor in recreational activities, while EX trims offer the options of 18-inch ultra bright mirror-finish wheels or a panoramic sunroof (V6 models only), a first for any Kia vehicle. With an overall length of 183.9 inches and overall width of 74.2 inches, the all-new CUV comes in longer, lower and roomier than the previous-generation Sorento, offering occupants a more spacious and comfortable ride.

Best-in-Class Performance
The 2011 Sorento offers two engines, both more powerful than the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V . A 3.5-liter V6 providing best-in-class 276 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque and a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine producing 175 horsepower and 169 pound-feet of torque both are coupled to a new six-speed automatic transmission, which together provide ample power and offer improved fuel efficiency. This all-new six-speed automatic transmission is a proprietary design for Kia Motors that was designed, engineered and built specifically for Kia vehicles, making the brand one of only three manufacturers to employ such a transmission. To further meet consumer needs, both engines can be mated to either front- or all-wheel-drive configurations, the latter coming with a locking center differential to evenly distribute power to all wheels while operating the vehicle at low speeds during more severe weather conditions. For enhanced ride performance, the all-new 2011 Sorento employs a more compact and lighter MacPherson strut front suspension and a fully independent multi-link rear suspension.

- more -

Modern and Tech-Inspired Interior
Moving inside, the feeling of spaciousness is all the more evident, and with both five- and seven-passenger seating configurations, Sorento is now more versatile than ever. With 142.5 cubic feet of interior volume when equipped with five seats or 149.4 cubic feet with seven, Sorento offers quite a bit more space over the previous generation's 137.5 cubic feet. Head and legroom also have been increased for optimal occupant comfort. With nearly five cubic feet more in cargo capacity, the new generation effortlessly accommodates both passenger and cargo needs for cruising around town as easily as weekends camping in the mountains.

In addition to offering a comfortable ride, impressive technology features also come standard throughout, including an AM/FM/CD/MP3/Sat audio system with SIRIUS® Satellite Radio capabilities and three months complimentary service , auxiliary and USB audio input jacks for connecting personal MP3 players, and Bluetooth® wireless technology connectivity with steering wheel-mounted voice activation controls to enable hands-free operation for all compatible mobile phones. All EX models offer standard push button-start ignition and rear sonar back-up sensors, while available voice-activated navigation, rear view back-up cameras and air ionization purification technology complete the modern and high-tech driving experience.

Standard comforts can be found throughout, including air conditioning, a tilt and telescopic steering wheel with integrated audio controls, trip computer and rear map pockets. In addition to those features, the LX trims offers standard automatic up and down driver's window function, illuminated vanity mirror, EcoMinder Indicator to assist with fuel efficient driving habits, and a second row arm rest with cup holder. Progressing to the EX trim provides even more well-appointed standard features including dual automatic temperature control, rear air conditioning (V6 models only) and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.

- more -

Able to suit practically any driver, Sorento offers the discriminating consumer numerous package options. The Convenience Package, available for the LX trim, offers roof rails, rear sonar, a rear view mirror with backup display, heated front seats and fog lamps. Moving to the Premium Package, available for the EX trim, includes roof rails, leather trim seats, heated front seats, a rear view backup camera and a panoramic sunroof (V6 models only), further adding to the feeling of spaciousness. By upgrading to the Limited Package, available for the EX trim outfitted with the Premium Package, drivers will benefit from luxuriously appointed features including a voice-activated navigation system with real-time traffic, an Infinity premium surround system with 12 speakers and a 550-watt digital amplifier, 18-inch chrome-finish wheels and interior accent mood illumination. A DVD Entertainment Package also is available on EX V6 models (without sunroof) for those looking for a little extra entertainment while on the road.

Superior Safety Features
Like all Kia vehicles, the 2011 Sorento is equipped with a plethora of standard safety equipment. All trims come outfitted with driver and passenger advanced front airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, side curtain airbags and front active headrests, four-wheel Antilock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD). Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Brake Control (DBC) also come standard on all models, the former assisting in preventing the vehicle from rolling backward when trying to pull away from an uphill gradient, while the latter helps keep the vehicle moving straight and steady down steep grades.

Pedestrians also benefit from the all-new Sorento's standard safety systems. For the 2011 model year the hood of Sorento is designed to crumple and flex strategically so as to absorb and disperse the shock of a collision with a pedestrian or bicyclist, aimed at decreasing the level of potential injury.

Industry-Leading Warranty
The 2011 Sorento is covered by Kia's comprehensive warranty program, which offers unprecedented consumer protection. Included in this program are a 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, a five-year/60,000-mile limited basic warranty and a five-year/100,000-mile anti-perforation warranty. A five-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance plan also is part of the comprehensive vehicle coverage.

Porsche Boxster Spyder Glides Almost Weightlessly Into LA

The Porsche Boxster Spyder is 176 lbs lighter than a Boxster S and 10 heavier than the original 989 Boxster. We told you how it got lighter by using loops instead of door handles. Now see it in person.

In addition to dropping its weight all the way down to 2,811 lbs, the Spyder also gains the 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine from the Cayman S, its 320 HP figure is 10 higher than the regular Boxster S. So what's all this fanciness and lightness going to cost you? $61,200, $3,200 more than the standard S. Not actually that bad considering all the upgrades.

Make sure you check out our list of how the Spyder's been lightened and JF Musial's driving video.

Here's the press release:

Porsche's newest entry will be the lightest in its line-up

ATLANTA – November 5, 2009 – Weighing in at just 2,811 lbs., the new 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder will be the lightest Porsche available – from a company known for lightweight, proficient sports cars. This new mid-engined roadster represents the true, purist form of the sports car – agile, powerful, open and efficient. This third Boxster model will join the Boxster and Boxster S and will make its world debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, December 2, 2009.

The newest member of the Boxster family stands out from the other versions of Porsche's mid-engined roadster. Its low-slung, lightweight soft top – when closed – extends far to the rear to protect the driver and passenger from bright sunshine, wind and weather. This top, when combined with extra-low side windows and two striking bulges on the single-piece rear lid, provides the Boxster Spyder with a sleek silhouette reminiscent of the Carrera GT.

The Boxster Spyder features a 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine with Direct Fuel Injection upfront of the rear axle. Maximum output is 320 horsepower (hp), 10 hp more than the Boxster S. The combination of 10 more hp and 176 pounds less weight than the award-winning Boxster S, plus an all-new sport suspension that lowers the Boxster Spyder 20 mm, a lower center of gravity, a standard limited slip differential, and exclusive wheels provides the kind of driving dynamics that back up the unique look. Aluminum door skins and lightweight interior door panels from the 911 GT3 RS contribute to the weight reduction.

When equipped with Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission and the Sports Chrono Package, the new Spyder, using Launch Control, accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. Top track speed is 166 mph – with the roof open.

Fundamentally, the entire Boxster family is the successor to the legendary 550 Spyder and RS 60 of the Fifties and Sixties, all sharing the same mid-engine roadster concept. Low weight and supreme agility combine to provide outstanding driving pleasure.

In 2004 and 2008 Porsche produced limited editions of the Boxster bearing the additional name Spyder, honoring the 550 and RS 60. In contrast, the new Boxster Spyder is a regular, but specially developed and upgraded production model as compared with the Boxster and Boxster S. The 2011 Boxster Spyder goes on sale February 2010. U.S. pricing is $61,200.

What else is afoot?

Picking up four iMievs is an interesting play for Best Buy, and it raises a handful of questions. Is Mitsubishi using the electronics retail giant as a jumping-off point for a nationwide electric-car charging infrastructure? Is this a one-time deal, or the start of something bigger? And how will Mitsu capitalize on the disposable income of Best Buy's notoriously gadget-friendly customer base?

While the possibilties are endless, the likely answers are not. Chances are good that the partnership benefits both equally; Best Buy gets an in — assuming it wants one — to the possible sale and installation of charging technology, and Mitsubishi gets its most diminutive product in the eyes of tech-oriented American consumers at relatively little cost. More details are likely after the turn of the year.

Many wonderful things hail from Alabama: Good barbecue. Funky soul music. In 2011, the Hyundai Sonata will join that list. America, say hello to crimson-colored, mid-size Korean luxury. Roll kimchi tide! (It looks better in person. Promise.)

Interesting facts we learned in the press conference:

1. A 2.4-liter, direct-injected gasoline four will be the launch powerplant, but a direct-injected turbo four and a hybrid (utilizing lithium-polymer battery technology) will follow.

2. Hyundai is currently the fourth best-selling automaker in the world. (Surprising, no?)

3. MSRP for the base Sonata will be under $20,000.

4. Hyundai believes that the V-6 engine/mid-size sedan combination will go the way of the dinosaur.

5. Over 1.2 million Sonatas have been sold.

6. Sonata production will take place in Montgomery, Alabama.

7. When no one was looking, Hyundai went and got serious.

-Production begins at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama in December with retail sales beginning in January
-XM Satellite Radio™, real-time XM NavTraffic, XM Data Services, HD Radio Technology™, Bluetooth®, Touch-screen navigation and iPod®/USB

Sonata is the second vehicle in Hyundai's 24/7 version 2.0 product initiative (seven new models in the next 24 months) following on the heels of the all-new Tucson. Production of Sonata will begin later this month at Hyundai's U.S. plant in Alabama with retail sales beginning in January.
The 2011 Sonata represents a modern approach to the traditional midsize sedan segment by using only advanced four-cylinder engines, emotional design and luxury features offered with Hyundai's strong value proposition. The 2011 Sonata poses some intriguing questions:

-Why can't a smart, solid sedan also have modern, sleek, sophisticated style?
-Why pay so much to get a taste of luxury?
-Why can't an efficient four-cylinder engine give V6 power?

FLUIDIC SCULPTURE DESIGN LANGUAGE

Beginning with the 2011 Sonata and 2010 Tucson projects, Hyundai designers set to work about three and half years ago on Fluidic Sculpture. Fluidic Sculpture is a consistent, cohesive design language that will ripple through the entire Hyundai showroom. In developing the initial Sonata sketches, Hyundai designers considered the interplay of natural, fluid elements with more rigid surfaces and structures to create the illusion of constant motion. Inspired by nature, Fluidic Sculpture injects sophistication and dynamic angles into the shape of a vehicle and now serves as the core of Hyundai's future design identity.
The exterior of the all-new Sonata is long, light and low. The high beltline allows for a long, sleek roofline accented by the third window. A monoform side profile includes flowing lines highlighted by a Hyundai signature chrome accent that spans the length of the car. Normally, this type of trim is only found around the windows. On the new Sonata, this trim extends out from the headlamps, juts up along the hood and through the beltline. The face is bold
with a large powerful chrome grille and headlamps that integrate precise details. The stance is completed by 16-, 17- or 18-inch multi-spoke wheels.
The sophisticated look continues inside where Hyundai has created an upscale ambiance thanks to a flow-through center console and instrument panel. These flowing surfaces complement the exterior design and wrap around the driver and passengers.

HYUNDAI PACKAGING EFFICIENCY
The sleek design, combined with Hyundai's expertise in interior packaging, has produced an interior that delivers class-leading comfort, functionality and practicality. A sleek roofline typically compromises headroom and interior volume but, at 120.2 cubic feet, the Sonata has the most interior volume of its key competitors. It is so spacious, Sonata continues to be classified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a Large car, truly a "class above" Camry, Altima, Fusion and Malibu (all are categorized as Midsize cars). Even in trunk room, the Sonata shines. Sonata's 16.4 cu. ft. of trunk space gives it a 9.3 percent advantage over the Camry, and a 17.1 percent advantage over Accord.

ADVANCED POWERTRAINS
The new Sonata will launch with Hyundai's new Theta II GDI 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a Gasoline Direct-Injection (GDI) fuel delivery system, which contributes to improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions. Sonata is the first midsize sedan to adopt GDI technology as standard equipment in a naturally aspirated powertain. This shorter, more direct path of fuel delivery, allows for greater control of the fuel mixture at the optimum moment, thus improving efficiency. The fuel is injected by a camshaft-driven, high pressure pump that operates at pressures up to 2,175 psi. Direct injection also utilizes a higher than normal 11.3:1 compression ratio for increased power. The pistons are "dished" to increase combustion efficiency in the cylinder. This powerplant will deliver best-in-class fuel economy, best-in-class four-cylinder horsepower and best-in-class torque.
Sonata delivers an impressive 23 mpg city/35 mpg highway estimated fuel economy rating* with the available six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC®. (When equipped with the six-speed manual, the Sonata achieves an estimated 23 mpg city/34 mpg highway fuel economy rating). The preliminary horsepower and torque ratings for the Theta II GDI are 198 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. In the SE trim which includes a standard dual exhaust, the engine delivers 200 horsepower. This high-tech, all-aluminum, 16-valve engine features Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) on both camshafts and a Variable Induction System (VIS) for better engine breathing. A version of this engine also meets Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) standards.
Next year, Hyundai will add a 2.0-liter Theta II turbocharged GDI four-cylinder engine and a 2.4-liter Hybrid Blue Drive model featuring Hyundai's breakthrough lithium polymer battery pack. Details about these powertrains will be announced at the 2010 New York Auto Show. Sonata's innovative segment first powertrain lineup is a key driver of Hyundai's goal to be the most fuel-efficient automaker on the planet.

SIX-SPEED AUTOMATIC AND MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS
Hyundai's commitment to making the Sonata extremely fuel efficient continues with a six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC manual control or a standard six-speed manual transaxle.
Hyundai's all-new six-speed automatic A6MF2 transaxle helps the company meet its goals of improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. Shifts are silky-smooth with an option of manual control through the SHIFTRONIC feature.
Drivers can access the SHIFTRONIC feature by moving the gear selector into a separate gate. Pushing the selector forward or pulling it rearward will shift the transmission up or down sequentially, adding to driver control. The SE trim will also feature steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. A clear LCD readout on the instrument panel shows the gear being used.
Designed for transverse engine applications in passenger cars and SUVs, the new compact transmission puts Hyundai into an elite class of auto manufacturers who have designed their own proprietary six-speed automatic transmissions. The strength of the design is its unique layout which makes it smaller, more compact and lighter than any other six-speed transmission on the market today.
For the customer, the new six-speed delivers a performance edge. In this application, it helps brings a nine percent gain in fuel economy (35 mpg* versus 32 mpg). The gearbox has no dipstick because it is filled with automatic transmission fluid that is good for the life of the vehicle under normal usage conditions, thereby reducing maintenance costs.
Developed over a four-year period, this new six-speed automatic is 26.4 pounds lighter than the five-speed it replaces. It also is 1.6 inches shorter and considerably simpler, having 62 fewer parts, which is a key to increased durability, lighter weight and lower cost.
When it comes to transmissions, more gears are definitely better. The addition of a sixth gear enables closer spacing between gear ratios providing a better balance of performance and fuel economy while the wide overall gear ratio helps deliver strong acceleration.
The gearbox has three planetary gearsets and a unique flat torque converter that shortens the unit's overall length by 0.47 inches. Four pinion differentials improve durability and further minimize size.
Another example of engineering ingenuity is found in the design of the hydraulic pressure control unit. Slight manufacturing deviations from one solenoid valve to the next often times cause fluctuation in the hydraulic pressure and affect shift precision and quality. The transmission featured in the Sonata cleverly integrates adjustment screws in the valves that enable each of the eight valves to be calibrated at the factory. This feature ensures stable hydraulic pressure at any shift point which facilitates a high degree of precision and control needed to deliver fast, smooth and precise shifts throughout the rpm range.
SUPPLE RIDE, AGILE HANDLING
An advanced four-wheel independent suspension system combines a supple ride with precise handling and steering response for Sonata GLS and Limited models. Sonata uses MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension systems with increased travel for improved wheel control and a smoother ride. All four wheels are controlled by coil springs, fade-resistant gas-charged dampers and stabilizer bars. The suspension has been optimized to keep the vehicle flat during corning and provide quick turn-in response. The rear suspension uses aluminum components to reduce weight and improve suspension performance. The GLS and Limited models also use advanced low-rolling resistance tires to improve fuel economy while maintaining good ride and handling performance.
The Sonata SE is an even more exciting and willing partner for drivers who prefer sportier ride and handling dynamics. The sport-tuned suspension features stiffer springs and larger stabilizer bars, resulting in a 20 percent increase in roll stiffness. Unique SE dampers, including monotube shocks in the rear are used to control the more aggressive suspension. Low profile 18-inch tires round out the unique chassis components of the Sonata SE.
All Sonatas have column-mounted, motor-driven electric power steering that adjusts instantly to changing driving conditions while improving fuel economy over a conventional steering system. A quick-ratio steering rack is used for crisp feel on turn-in. Sonata's turning diameter of 35.8 feet is better than Camry, Accord, Altima, Fusion and Malibu.

WORLD CLASS POWER-TO-WEIGHT RATIO
One of the program targets for the 2011 Sonata engineering team was world-class power-to-weight ratio. Power-to-weight ratio pays dividends in both performance and fuel economy.onata is rich in ultra-high-strength steel, leading to world-class body rigidity. The 2011 Sonata is 25 percent stiffer in torsion and 19 percent stiffer in bending rigidity than its predecessor, yet it is lighter than many midsize sedans, also offering more interior room.
This focus on power-to-weight ratio pays dividends across the board. The Sonata owes its ability to deliver both strong performance and excellent fuel economy in great part to its impressive power-to-weight efficiency.

Advanced Standard Safety Technologies: PART OF HYUNDAI'S ASSURANCE COMMITMENT
Sonata is built from the ground up with safety in mind, with a hot stamped ultra-high-strength steel body structure, advanced airbag technology and Electronic Stability Control (ESC), delivering on Hyundai's commitment to both active and passive safety technology leadership. The prior generation Sonata was the first midsize sedan with standard ESC when it launched in March of 2005. ESC was not standard equipment on Honda Accord until the 2008 model year and the 2010 model year for Toyota Camry. Once again every 2011 Sonata has lifesaving ESC as standard equipment. This is important because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reported that ESC results in 35 percent fewer single-vehicle crashes and 30 percent fewer single-vehicle fatalities in passenger cars.
The Sonata also features a state-of-the-art braking package. The package includes four-wheel disc brakes and an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) including Brake Assist, which provides maximum braking force when a panic stop is detected, and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) to automatically adjust the braking force to front and rear axles based on the vehicle loading conditions.
Sonata features six airbags-including dual front, front seat-mounted side-impact, and front and rear side curtain airbags-along with active front-seat head restraints. The 2011 Hyundai Sonata is projected to earn the NHTSA's top rating of five-stars for front and side impacts. Other passive safety features include shingle-style rear-seat head restraints for improved visibility, three-point seatbelts for all seating positions, front-seat seatbelt pretensioners and force limiters, and a rear-seat Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system for child seats.

2011 SONATA OFFERS FOUR UNIQUE AUDIO ENVIRONMENTS
An AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system with six speakers comes standard in the Sonata GLS and SE.
AM/FM/XM/ DVD/MP3 audio system with touch-screen navigation and Dimension® premium sound with subwoofer and external amplifier is optional on the GLS and SE models.
The Limited model comes standard with an AM/FM/XM/6-disc CD-changer/MP3 with HD Radio Technology and Dimension premium sound.
The optional AM/FM/XM/DVD/MP3 audio system with touch-screen navigation that includes a 400-watt external amplifier system on the Limited comes with Infinity audio.

DIMENSION AUDIO SYSTEMS
Dimension is a new branded audio system created by Hyundai Mobis and features a Variable Equalizer with normal, dynamic and concert settings. The last generation equalizer provided only one fixed sound field. The new Variable Equalizer, tuned by renowned audiophile Ken Pholmann, is a function for controlling the sound qualities sensed by listeners. For example, Pohlmann added bass response to the concert mode typically not found in other systems.

INFINITY® AUDIO SYSTEM
Audio enthusiasts with even more demanding tastes will be impressed by the AM/FM/XM/DVD/MP3 audio system with touch-screen navigation that includes a 400-watt external amplifier, dedicated Dual Voice Coil (DVC) subwoofer, eight-channels and nine Infinity speakers available on the Limited. Infinity and Hyundai engineers worked together during the early stages of development to integrate the speakers into Sonata's interior. The team spent hundreds of hours fine-tuning the system for the cabin's unique acoustic attributes.

XM, HD RADIo TECHNOLOGY, Bluetooth and Touch-screen navigation DELIVER UNRIVALED MIDSIZE SEDAN technology CHOICES
2011 Sonata comes standard with three months of XM Satellite Radio, real-time XM NavTraffic and XM Data Services

Honda P-NUT Concept: Oh Good Grief!

Honda's Personal-Neo Urban Transport Concept is confusingly called the P-NUT, even though its McLaren F1-like three-point seating and rear-mounted powertrain are designed to make passengers feel like they aren't packed in like actual peanuts. Also, it's a little too familiar.

Because B-Segment cars like the Mazda2 and Ford Fiesta are far too large, companies are all hot-and-bothered over the prospect of creating a micro car like the Smart Fortwo without as many of the compromises (price, efficiency, passengers, masculinity). The reasoning is sound. Americans are increasingly urban dwellers and could use a vehicle with a smaller footprint.

Therefore, we've seen vehicles like the Toyota iQ, Renault Zoe, Mitsubishi Miev, and others tackle the micro car problem. The P-NUT adds nothing to this but Honda-meets-Storm Trooper aesthetics, a stupid name and a layout we think Gordan Murray may find familiar to more than just his eponymous supercar.

This seems incredibly derivative of the same concept Murray is working on with his T.25 City Car, albeit without the fanciful production model. Perhaps this is Honda pulling the football away at the last second as revenge for the McLaren F1, which Murray himself claimed was inspired by Honda's last rear-engined vehicle — the glorious NSX.

Whatever the impetus, we're not interested until they at least decide on a fake propulsion source for it.

Honda ‘Personal-Neo Urban Transport' Concept Demonstrates Potential for Ultra-compact City-focused Vehicle

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 2, 2009 – The Honda Personal-Neo Urban Transport (P-NUT) design study model demonstrates a futuristic concept for an ultra-compact and sophisticated city coupe, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show.
Conceived around a small "footprint" for maximum convenience in tight urban settings, the packaging concept integrates a center driving position configuration and a rear powertrain layout. The exterior styling leverages crisp angles with dynamic flowing lines that originate from the front of the vehicle and span outward toward the rear. The end result is a sleek and aggressive exterior that also allows for a spacious and open interior with excellent visibility.
"A new generation is discovering the benefits of living in urban centers that provide convenient access to business, entertainment and social opportunities," said Dave Marek, director of advanced design for Honda R&D Americas, Inc. "The Personal-Neo Urban Transport concept explores the packaging and design potential for a vehicle conceived exclusively around the city lifestyle."
The exterior styling is intended to capture a future direction for premium sophistication while balancing the need for maximum interior space and an aerodynamic appearance. The interior layout, in conjunction with the rear powertrain design, contributes prominently to the exterior's overall shape.
- more -
The layout of the interior space, with its center driving position flanked by two rear seats, provides generous legroom for all occupants, roughly the equivalent of a mid-sized sedan in a vehicle that has an exterior footprint similar to a micro car. Interior functionality is increased by rear seating areas that fold up and out of the way to increase storage capacity. The windshield serves as a heads-up display for the navigation system and the back-up camera.
The modular rear engine bay, depicted on the exterior by blue composite material, is designed to accommodate a wide variety of potential propulsion technologies including a conventional small displacement internal combustion engine, a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain, or a battery-electric powertrain.
"The objective of the exterior and interior designers was to explore the potential for a new type of small-segment-category vehicle that overcomes many of the objections for existing micro-car designs," said Marek. "While the Honda P-NUT concept introduces function-oriented concepts, it also shows that small cars don't have to compromise on style or amenities."
The Advanced Design Studio of Honda R&D Americas, Inc. in Los Angeles developed the P-NUT design study model. Honda R&D Americas began its operations in California in 1975 with local market research activities and has steadily grown its capabilities over the past 33 years to include all aspects of new vehicle research, design and development. Recent Honda-brand efforts include trend-setting products such as the Pilot, Ridgeline, Element, Civic Coupe and Civic Si Coupe.

Assuming large cars exist only to compensate for anatomical deficiencies, there's now more for those of us with an abundance of "spirit." Presenting the 2011 Mazda2, created to bring Zoom Zoom to the Boom Boom.

The big news for the Mazda2 (unless you count a McDreamy sighting at the reveal), since they aren't talking powertrains or price, is that it's got an Americanized face more similar to the Mazda3 and it's coming in summer of 2010. Also, it's just as attractive in person as it is in the pictures, especially in ridiculous ski-boarding faux-SEMA trim.

2011 MAZDA2: ZOOM-ZOOM CONCENTRATED
LOS ANGELES – Magazine-thin laptops, MP3 players and bite-size candy bars are just a few examples of good things that come in small packages. Now, for the first time in North America, Mazda is introducing its own affordable, fun-sized creation – the 2011 MAZDA2. A stylish, eco-friendly, fun-to-drive five-door hatchback, the MAZDA2 is Zoom-Zoom in its most concentrated form – compact and efficient, yet packed with style and substance. It will launch into the North American market in late mesummer, 2010.
MAZDA2 is the latest in a line of stylish, insightful and hugely fun-to-drive small cars from Mazda, and will bring an all-new level of refinement to the segment, as MAZDA3 did for the compact C-Car market. MAZDA2 is a car that only the engineers at Mazda could have created. It was designed and engineered from scratch to be a pure Mazda, offering the sort of driving experience that could only come from the company that developed the timeless MX-5 two-seat roadster, and it brings a combination of athletic design and dynamic performance to the subcompact class that simply does not exist at this time.
Originally launched in 2007, the new MAZDA2 was first introduced in Europe, Japan and Australia. Its launch created a unique offering in the B-car (subcompact) segment, especially through its distinguished design and outstanding driving performance. Since then, it has been highly acclaimed throughout the world, winning 48 automotive awards, including "Car of the Year" accolades in many markets, including Japan, New Zealand, Chile, Bulgaria and Greece. Notably, the MAZDA2 was selected as the "2008 World Car of the Year" (WCOTY) at the 2008 New York International Auto Show and has established a distinguished position in the B-Car segment. To date, total global sales have reached approximately 370,000 units in the three years since its introduction, and MAZDA2 is now recognized as one of the global models which symbolizes the essence of the Mazda brand.
While developing the new MAZDA2, Mazda took a thorough look at global subcompact car trends and carefully worked to identify the truly beneficial values that could be infused into a global B-Car. As a result, the new MAZDA2 adds Mazda's unique brand values such as exhilarating driving performance and eye-catching design to the segment without sacrificing the basic requirements for subcompact cars: superior fuel efficiency, high crash safety performance and ample passenger space. In fact, while other carmakers have increased the size of their small cars, Mazda's first mission was to analyze and define the optimal size of a compact vehicle. This resulted in a very efficient body size for the new MAZDA2 without sacrificing attractive features that consumers desire.
A Design that Attracts Customers Worldwide
●Dynamic Performance
With the MAZDA2, Mazda evolved the athleticism that is inherent to the Mazda design DNA in pursuit of bold and diverse expression of movement. The basic form of the new MAZDA2 is characterized by a combination of dynamic performance, sportiness and simplicity that leaves a strong visual impression. While competitors are producing compact cars with a focus on a boxy body form to prioritize functionality, Mazda shortened the body overhangs and trimmed the corners to the greatest extent possible as a way to provide a form that is compact and sporty, conveys a sense of stability and inspires confidence. By carefully creating a base form and then giving it energetic character lines befitting a B-car, Mazda created a design that is highly distinctive, but timeless.
●Concentrated
Mazda pursued a concentrated, taut form for the body as a virtue in itself, not to simply reduce the car's body size. This creative background was advantageous in efforts to achieve maximum dynamic performance within the new MAZDA2's compact body. In other words, the MAZDA2 possesses the essence of Mazda's spirit of compact, sporty dynamic performance – "Zoom-Zoom Concentrated."
Exterior Design Theme: "Coordinated Movement"
In pursuit of a solid form and a richly expressive exterior design, Mazda established an exterior design theme of "coordinated movement". In line with this theme, the design team combined the visual movements created by the car's silhouette, its body lines, and the way in which patterns of light played on the body to create dynamic, multifaceted expressions not typically seen on a B-car. These expressions exude a powerful energy that makes the new MAZDA2 look as though it is moving while standing still. Key exterior design elements include: a sporty wedge shape that conveys a strong sense of forward motion; a deeply sculpted form in which the body is drawn inward fore and aft of the A-pillars; and distinctive character lines that extend from the front fender arches to the body shoulders.
Dynamic Performance Not Found on Competitors in the Segment
Mazda focused on realizing driver-oriented maneuverability and confidence-inspiring driving dynamics ｆor a Zoom-Zoom driving experience that is unique in this segment. At the same time, Mazda maintained a development focus on delivering high cost-effectiveness in situations ranging from day-to-day driving to long excursions on a weekend. Specifically, Mazda worked to make the new MAZDA2 economical to own in terms of fuel costs through its excellent fuel economy and improved durability.
A Powertrain for Sporty Performance with Great Fuel Economy
The Zoom-Zoom driving experience that Mazda strives for has two key attributes: 1) a sense of linear acceleration and deceleration that responds crisply to how far the accelerator pedal is depressed, allowing the driver to control car speed as desired; and 2) a sense of liveliness through immediate response to the accelerator for quick off-the-line acceleration and overtaking. The development team targeted a performance feel reflecting enhancement of both of these key attributes without adversely impacting on the MAZDA2's superior fuel economy as a subcompact car.
Nimble Handling and a Stable Ride
The new MAZDA2 inherits a highly regarded suspension system, which has MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion-beam axle at the rear. With improved steering and braking systems, the resulting dynamic performance yields consistently responsive handling and a smooth, stable ride that draws much from the legendary MX-5.
Superior Quietness and Aerodynamics
In order to create more comfortable day-to-day driving, Mazda took various countermeasures to achieve a quiet cabin environment. Mazda also improved the coefficient of drag values to achieve better aerodynamics, contributing not only to the MAZDA2's quietness, but also to a more sporty ride and fuel efficiency.
Harmony Between Sporty Driving Performance and Environmental and Safety Features
In order to form the best balance between lower fuel consumption, outstanding driving dynamics and top-level safety performance, the new MAZDA2 reflects the close attention paid to minimizing weight through its smaller body shell, optimization of the structure, extensive use of high-tensile steel in its body and many other weight-saving measures implemented throughout the car. Under this approach, Mazda made the best use of weight-saving know-how, similar to the "gram" strategy employed during the development of the MX-5 sports car. As a result, the MAZDA2 has achieved world-leading crash safety ratings (five stars in the Euro New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), the highest possible result) without compromising driving performance and fuel economy.
The Security of a B-Car's Functionality and Maneuverability
In line with the way B-cars are mainly used as day-to-day commuters, with a driver-oriented development philosophy, the MAZDA2 has achieved a level of drivability and nimbleness that enables easy maneuverability, even in small car-parking areas and other tight spaces.
More information on the 2011 MAZDA2 interior, specifications and pricing will be available at a later date.

2011 Hyundai Sonata: A Sexy, Camera-Shy Mid-Size

Seeing the four-banger-only 2011 Hyundai Sonata in person, it looks sleek and stylish and beautifully detailed. However, in these press images, it looks awkward and lumpy. We can't figure out why.

You'll have to take our word for it, the 2011 Sonata is a good looking car. No, we were not drunk when we saw it. As far as we could tell, Hyundai wasn't piping psychoactive drugs into the presentation hall via the air ducts to influence our opinion. For whatever reason, the car looks goofy in every single one of the press shots. Very unfortunate. In any case, the Sonata is a dramatic departure from the rather staid Sonata currently on the market. Hyundai calls the styling "Fluidic Sculpture," and it results in high-relief sheet metal sculpting with crisp character lines.

The what's most impressive when examining the car close-up is the attention to detail and the panel fitment. This is a car which speaks volumes of the foundational improvements underway at Hyundai for almost a decade now. There's nothing on the inside or the outside that makes you crinkle your nose and think "Boy, that's cheap." It's a car planted firmly in the meat of the midsize family sedan market, and makes a strong case at vying for the best buy in the segment.

So what's it got. Well, at launch the car is planned with just one engine, the new Theta II 2.4-liter gasoline direct injection four cylinder. It'll make 198 or 200 HP at 6,300 RPM depending on dual exhaust option and 186 lb-ft of torque at 4,250 RPM. The California PZEV version gets slightly boned with 190 HP. Hyundai is sheepish about admitting to a V6 being in the works, but the engine bay is clearly big enough for one as well having plenty of room for a more-than-likely forthcoming hybrid version. You'll get your choice of a six-speed manual transmission or an all-new six speed SHIFTRONIC automatic which comes with paddle shifters. That new auto is quite a piece too, weighing 26.4 pounds less and carrying 62 fewer parts than the outgoing unit. The engine-trans combo will return fuel economy in the range 23/34 MPG city/highway for the manual and, get this, 23/35 MPG for the automatic.

Suspension is a standard McPherson strut front and a multilink rear suspension, coil springs and sta-bars all around. The car also has standard electronic power assist steering, stability control, ABS and all those other nanny acronyms we've become accustomed to. The Sport model interestingly isn't available with the manual transmission, but it does get stiffened springs and anti-roll bars, more aggressive dampers, and 18 inch wheels shod in performance oriented tires.
Inside is perhaps the most compelling part of the new Sonata. It's a surprisingly nice, comfortable, roomy place to exist. Rear leg room is improved and despite the swooping new roofline head room has not changed as Hyundai's lowered to hip point to accommodate taller individuals. Materials throughout are soft touch and nicely textured. The instrument panel is quite lovely and has styling cues found in much more expensive cars. The new Sonata's got a very nice and usable infotainment screen with controls we've seen in Infiniti's but actually executed better. This is the first vehicle Hyundai is debuting their new premium Dimension audio venture. It lies between the uplevel audio system and the top-shelf Infiniti system. Hyundai's also gone to a Volvo-like HVAC control scheme with a stylized central seat icon serving as a control button. Everything's well laid out, crisp and usable, and most importantly comfortable without being overbearing.

You'll just have to believe us when we say it does look pretty good, and we expect to see a pretty intense dogfight between the new Sonata and the MaliCamCord.

THE 2011 SONATA: THE NEW STANDARD FOR MIDSIZE SEDANS

Sonata Injects Emotion, Advanced Powertrains and Superior Quality into Bland Segment

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 2, 2009 – Hyundai today introduced its all-new 2011 Sonata at the
Los Angeles Auto Show. This marks the North American debut of the latest version of the popular midsize sedan, introducing Hyundai's "Fluidic Sculpture" design language and an all four-cylinder engine lineup to the U.S. market.

-All-new sixth generation Sonata midsize sedan
-Fluidic Sculpture design
-All four-cylinder engine lineup
-Launches with new Theta II 2.4-liter gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine and in-house six-speed automatic transmission
-Class leading fuel economy of 23 mpg city/35 mpg highway*
-Class leading 198 horsepower standard* (200 horsepower on SE trim*)
-2.0-liter Theta II turbocharged GDI four-cylinder engine and Hybrid Blue Drive models to debut by 2010 year-end

-An AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system with six speakers comes standard in the Sonata GLS and SE.

-AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system with touch-screen navigation and Dimension® premium sound with subwoofer and external amplifier is optional on the GLS and SE models.

-The Limited model comes standard with an AM/FM/XM/6-disc CD-changer/MP3 with HD Radio Technology and Dimension premium sound.

-The optional AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system with touch-screen navigation that includes a 400-watt external amplifier system on the Limited comes with Infinity audio.

VW Wants To Make Up! (Lite) Yours In 2011

This is the VW UP! Lite concept, debuting moments ago at the LA Auto Show. It's a four-seat, front-wheel-drive, diesel-electric hybrid with 70MPG fuel economy. While it's not production-intent, Ze Germans have announced plans for an ultra-efficient compact by 2011.

The UP! Lite takes what everyone knows following almost a hundred years of diesel electric train and applies it to cars. The sleek four-seater tips the scales at a featherweight 1,532 lbs and is fitted with a 0.8-liter TDI two-cylinder turbo-diesel engine 50 HP mated to a 14HP electric motor and a a seven speed DSG transmission. Acceleration from 0-60 MPH is pegged at a leisurely 12 seconds but still, 70 MPG! It would be like never filling up at all. Of course, this is just a "concept" but telegraphs vehicles VW is planning on rolling out globally in 2011, so we're betting it's pretty close to the real deal. Well, except for those wheels.

To the Point: Volkswagen Premiere in Los Angeles:
Up! Lite – This car is the world's most fuel-efficient four-seater
Volkswagen's Up! Lite concept consumes just 2.44 l/100 km (70 mpg/highway)
Concept based on the future New Small Family from Volkswagen
Wolfsburg / Los Angeles, 02 December 2009 - Volkswagen – Europe's strongest automotive brand – is setting standards worldwide when it comes to efficiency with its clean high-tech TDI and TSI engines. Now this is being followed up by latest coup at the Los Angeles Auto Show (December 4 to 13): the world premiere of the Up! Lite A progressive, fuel efficient and in all details cleverly designed four-seater with a hybrid drive. Combined fuel consumption: 2.44 l/100 km or 70 mpg/highway! No other car is more sustainable. With a drive concept consisting of a TDI (turbo-diesel), electric motor and 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) as well as top aerodynamics (Cd value: 0.237), Volkswagen is driving CO2 emissions down to a sensational 65 g/km. This makes the three-door concept the world's most fuel efficient car – and from the perspective of its overall CO2 footprint the world's most environmentally friendly four-seat car as well. Both technically and visually, the Up! Lite is a preview of the future. The image of the car body with its clean lines, as though sculpted from a block of aluminium, underscores just how fascinating a car tuned to aerodynamic perfection can look.

The ideal car for the daily commute to work

The technically challenging 2-Liter fuel consumption car might be launched globally. Many of the components of the 695 kilogram light Volkswagen are based on those of the future New Small Family, an entirely new model series that is already scheduled for market launch in initial countries at the end of 2011. The Up! Lite concept continues the Volkswagen strategy of offering high-tech and high-end quality in all of its vehicle classes, making progress affordable for every car driver. The Up! Lite was designed to be a versatile vehicle that makes trips into the city, commutes to work and naturally long trips as well significantly less expensive and more eco-friendly.

Hybrid drive enables electric driving

The centerpiece of the Up! Lite powertrain is the newly designed 0.8 TDI two-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with a power of 38 kW / 51 PS. Furthermore, the electric motor (10 kW) – designed as a pulse start module (starter, alternator and E-drive) – also reduces the load of the TDI, provides added propulsion (boosting) and works to recover kinetic energy (regenerative braking). During boost phases – e.g. in a quick passing maneuver – the TDI and E-motor combine for a total power of 48 kW / 65 PS. Incidentally, a version of the TDI used in the Up! Lite was also used aboard the L1 concept car that Volkswagen presented in September at the IAA Motor Show in Frankfurt.

In two of its operating phases, the hybrid drive of the Up! Lite was designed to operate without any TDI propulsion at all. First phase: In so-called coast-down, activated by the driver taking his or her foot off the gas pedal (car coasts, TDI engine is shut off). Second phase: Over shorter distances, e.g. in residential areas, the E-motor can power the Up! Lite all by itself. In this case, a lithium-ion battery supplies the energy. Since it is capable of pure electric driving, the configuration is classified as a full hybrid. Shifting work is handled by a 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) like the one used in the new Polo. Moreover, the Volkswagen is equipped with a Stop-Start system.

Comfort and safety without compromises

Naturally, on the Up! Lite there is nothing lacking in comfort or safety. ESP is on board, airbags are on board, ample space is on board, highly advanced information and control features are on board, and it is good to know that occupants are enclosed and protected by a highly innovative safety frame of aluminium, steel and carbon fiber. The Volkswagen concept has a top speed of 160 km/h (100 mph) and accelerates to 100 km/h in a respectable 12.5 seconds (0-60 mph in 12 seconds).

"Made in Germany"

Overall, the Up! Lite is a prime example of the art of innovative engineering with the "Made in Germany" seal. And indeed not only because of its efficient powertrain and lightweight body construction. Other examples include: The radiator grille that closes and opens automatically depending on the cooling needs of the engine ("active thermal management"); and instead of a classic rearview mirror, three cameras perform this job better and more aerodynamically; when the car is parked in the summer, hot air is vented to outside the vehicle ("passive park ventilation"); an "optimized Easy-Entry feature" enables extremely comfortable entry and exit from the rear seating area; longitudinal adjustments to the driver and front passenger seats automatically adjusts seat height as well; when folding the rear bench seat, the seatback is easily unlatched by folding the rear head restraints forward ("Easy Switch"); many vehicle features (including ventilation, Internet, telephone, MP3, video, telephone, trip computer, radio) are controlled centrally via an intuitive touchscreen with hand movement sensors.

Design of the world of tomorrow

Even the most innovative car must look good to really be fun. And the Up! Lite with its "Liquid Blue Metallic" exterior is fun. That is because the 3.84 meter long, 1.40 meter tall and 1.60 meter wide Up! Lite makes a futuristic, bold and – in its form – very independent appearance. It is a car that looks as though it were cast from a single mould. Compared to the E-Up! concept car presented at the 2009 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, it is lower in profile and – to satisfy even more demanding aerodynamic requirements – it is longer, nearly reaching the length of the Polo (3.98 meters).

The styling itself portrays a compact vehicle that genuinely reflects its sustainable drive system and overall progressive concept. At the rear, the Up! Lite has the appearance of a distinctive hatchback sports car. As a result, the broad shoulder section is definitely reminiscent of the Scirocco. Furthermore, the look of the lower area is dominated by the large glass surface of the hatch, the LED rear lights and the rear fog lights (c-shaped) integrated in the bumper in typical Up! style. The counterparts of these lights are found in the front bumper as front fog lights. The car's side profile has clean styling with markedly smooth surfaces. There are no edges except for the upper tornado line, the wheel wells and a connection line integrated there. The side cameras that replace the outside mirrors look like winglets on the wings of a cargo plane. A novel stylistic and technical feature: the 18-inch wheels are produced from a combination of aluminium and carbon fiber. That is because sports appeal and fuel economy do not need to be mutually exclusive.

Already thinking about tomorrow today

By the way: In Europe, Volkswagen is currently demonstrating that minimal fuel consumption can be realized in all segments today, in the latest versions of the Polo (3.3 l/100 km; 58 mpg/highway), Golf (3.8 l/100 km; 51 mpg/highway) and Passat (4.4 l/100 km; 48 mpg/highway).

ALL-NEW THIRD-GENERATION TOYOTA SIENNA MAKES WORLD DEBUT

LOS ANGELES (Dec. 2, 2009) – Toyota unveiled the all-new, third-generation Sienna
minivan at a media conference today at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto show.
The Toyota Sienna is well known as a transportation solution for moving people and
cargo comfortably and efficiently. The third-generation Sienna will look and drive more like a
sedan, conform to new ideas about personal comfort, easily accommodate cargo, and handle
big loads.
The 2011 Sienna has been reinvented to handle these needs as it shifts to a more
expressive and dynamic vehicle with a stronger profile, high shoulder character and responsive
handling. With state-of the art features and rewarding driving dynamics, it is a vehicle that car-
lovers will find satisfying to drive. Sienna will offer new models, including a sporty SE and a
four-cylinder powertrain, as it continues to be the only offering in the segment with an all-wheel-
drive option.
"The all-new Sienna is an example of Toyota's commitment to lead the marketplace as it
anticipates consumers' needs and changes in lifestyle," said Bob Carter, group vice president
and general manager, Toyota Division, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. The third-generation Sienna
combines a contemporary style with features not previously seen in a minivan, and a fun-to-
drive spirit that will surprise many, along with the flexibility, spaciousness and features that have
defined the segment.
The Sienna was designed by Toyota's Calty Design Research and developed at Toyota
Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., with assembly being accomplished at Toyota Motor
Manufacturing, Indiana.

Visually Intriguing
The Sienna will come in five conveniently configured grades, all sharing a distinctly new
visual direction and features. The third-generation Sienna explores a more modernly advanced
and bold design. The sportier profile is complemented with distinctive window shapes. Working
closely with engineering, Sienna designers were able to create a high and wide shoulder to
embed a deliberately hidden door slider within the window graphic.

The strong high shoulder and distinct fender flares visually emphasize the wheels.
Dimensionally, the new Sienna rides on the same wheelbase as the prior generation, but it is
wider and slightly shorter overall.
In the front is a bold face design. Sophisticated headlamps angled higher than the grille
lends a confident front presence. The sculptural rear corner separates the Sienna from boxy
minivans as it surrounds the functional yet elegant LED taillights.
The interior features upscale quality and elegance, yet every element are logical and
functional. The distinctive swept shape of the IP creates the perception of increased personal
space for both driver and passenger. Careful attention to the details adds extra value to each
component. Sleek seat designs add flexibility and roominess while central climate and audio
controls are integrated into a single graphic element.
Overall, the new Sienna has a sportier, classier appearance. A Cd of 0.306 is the result
of careful design work and is a contributing factor in maintaining a quiet cabin and providing
excellent fuel economy.

Power, Plus Efficiency
A choice of two responsive DOHC engines will be available: a 3.5-liter V6 or 2.7-liter
four-cylinder engine. Both engines offer the latest in efficient, lightweight technology, including
Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), roller rocker arms and an Acoustically
Controlled Induction System (ACIS) that changes the length of the air-intake pipe to supply
more torque on demand.
The 3.5-liter V6 makes 266 horsepower at 6,200 rpm, with expected EPA-estimated
mileage ratings of 18 mpg city/24 mpg highway (16 mpg city/22 mpg highway on AWD models).
It also has a 3,500-pound tow capacity. With 187 horsepower at 5,800 rpm, the 2.7-liter four-
cylinder engine produces responsive power that exceeds some competitors V6 performance,
while delivering expected EPA-estimated fuel efficiency ratings of 19 mpg city and 26 mpg on
the highway.
Both engines are matched with state-of-the-art, electronically controlled six-speed
transmissions with sequential shift that provide smooth gear-shift feeling, quiet performance and
a lightweight, compact size.
The suspension uses front MacPherson struts, combined with rack-and pinion steering
for smooth, linear steering feel. Electronic Power Steering (EPS) delivers a more solid direct
on-road feel. With a wider stance, the new Sienna has a more direct steering feel. Under-body
aero parts also contribute to dynamic performance.

Models and Features
The Sienna will come in five grades: Sienna grade, LE, SE, XLE and Limited. All-wheel-
drive is available with the V6 on LE, XLE and Limited models.
With five distinct model choices, the new Sienna can be tailored to a wide range of
purposes and pocketbooks. The Sienna can be configured with seven- or eight-passenger
seating, in front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive, with a range of prices and features to
accommodate different mixes of practical needs and high aspirations.
The Sienna and LE grades are available with either the 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine or
the 3.5-liter V6. The value-driven Sienna grade and popular LE are equipped with an array of
standard features that include: cruise control, Daytime Running Lights with manual on/off
feature, tri-zone air conditioning, six- or eight-way-adjustable driver's captain's chair, power
windows with auto up/down and jam protection, AM/FM CD player with four speakers, XM
compatibility, auxiliary jack, power door locks, remote keyless entry, and three 12V outlets,
among other amenities. The Star Safety SystemTM, which includes Anti-lock Brakes (ABS),
Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC),
and Traction Control (TRAC), is standard on all models.
The LE V6 model is upgraded with even more features including dual power-sliding
doors and power rear door, a power driver seat with power lumbar support, electrochromatic
rearview mirror with Homelink™, backup camera, rear window sunshades, AM/FM/MP3 CD
player, integrated XM® satellite radio (subscription required), auxiliary audio jack, USB port with
iPod® connectivity, and hands-free phone capability and music streaming via Bluetooth®
wireless technology, and steering wheel audio controls. These features can be added to the
four-cylinder model as a package.
The XLE builds on the LE, adding features such as leather-trimmed seats, moonroof,
and an anti-theft system with engine immobilizer, remote keyless entry, and heated front seats.
Select optional XLE equipment includes a 10-speaker JBL® premium sound system with voice-
activated DVD Navigation and Panorama rear camera with integrated back-up guides, XM®
NavTraffic (subscription required), rear-seat Dual View Entertainment system, and an auxiliary
audio jack and USB port with iPod® connectivity.
The Limited is designed for customers who want all the features with more luxury. The
standard equipment list is extensive, including new second-row Lounge Seating and a power
60/40 Split & Stow third-row seat, front and rear parking sonar, dual moonroof, Smart Key, and
Safety Connect™. Select options include those available on the XLE plus HID auto high-beam
auto-high beam headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, and Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Dynamic
Radar Cruise Control.

New Sporty SE
Given its upgraded engineering, every Sienna will ride well and track cleanly through
corners, but none more so than the newest addition to the line: the sporty SE.
The SE is designed for those who appreciate an even sportier design with responsive
performance. The front has a more aggressive appearance and the side skirting visually lowers
the vehicle. Aerodynamic sculpting hugs the standard 19-inch alloy wheels, which are specially
tuned for sportier handling. Separating the SE further from other grades, the smoked tail lamps
create a visually prominent statement. The SE sits lower, on a sport-tuned suspension for
quicker feedback and better handling. Additionally, the SE is built with exclusive
instrumentation and unique interior colors and trim

Comfort Remains Key
The cabin of the new Sienna represents a conceptual leap forward, blending options for
more individual space, better cargo capacity, and improved group interaction.
The interior is more than two inches longer, and the seats now have longer ranges of
travel, making it possible to comfortably accommodate a wider range of heights and sizes.
The front seats have more rearward travel, and the steering wheel has a less upright
position, so the driver can adopt a comfortable driving posture. The driver's instruments and
controls are clear and concise, and the greater cabin width helps create extended personal
space for both driver and front passenger.
Numerous storage bins, cupholders and cargo spaces have been strategically placed in
convenient locations. A conversation mirror, integrated into the sunglass case in the overhead
console, allows visual contact with rear seat passengers.
Throughout the cabin, there is an open field of view to create an airy, roomy ambiance.
With wider fields of vision rearmost passengers can see forward more easily.
Both seven- and eight-seat cabins can be configured for a full contingent of passengers,
a load of cargo, or a convenient mix of both. In seven-seat cabins, the second row captain
chairs slide 23 inches, moving to the rear to create legroom for the tallest passengers and
easier ingress and egress. They can be moved forward close to the front seats to make it easy
to care for a child passenger, while also allowing easy access for third-row passengers.

A sliding center console on the XLE all-wheel-drive and Limited grades can be shared
between the front seats and second row passengers. The illuminated console slides into the
second row area to provide convenient access for both rows, so the need for storage and
passenger comfort can be equally served.

For even more passenger comfort, there is standard second-row lounge seating on the
Limited grade, which includes leg and foot support. Second-row captain chairs on all grades
have dual armrests, and a one-motion release mechanism in case the seat needs to be
removed.
On eight-passenger models, the second-row center seat can be removed and stowed in
the left side of the rear-storage area. When the center seat is stowed, a cupholder and storage
tray is revealed. The eight-passenger interior can easily be optimized for seven passengers,
and quickly reconfigured back for eight.
The second-row seats also feature a Tip Up and Long Slide feature, allowing them to
slide forward and back on extended rails, making more room for people or cargo as the need
arises. All second row seats, regardless of configuration, move out of the way with one touch to
gain easy access to the third row seats.
The 60/40 Split and Stow third-row seating folds flat with one motion manually, with the
Limited front-wheel drive receiving a power feature. The third row has been moved about two
inches rearward for enhanced comfort. With the third-row seat in use, there is enough storage
for five golf bags or four large suitcases. Four handy grocery hooks, with two in the back and
two in the second row seatbacks, add storage convenience.
It is easier than ever to load the Sienna, thanks to wider doors and one-touch second-
row seats. By sliding the second-row seats all the way to the rear, a walk-in aisle is created,
making it easier to enter, exit, install a child seat, or place a child in a seat. The second-row
seats can be moved all the way to the front, just behind the front row, to maximize rear cargo
capacity, especially with the third-row stowed flat.
With the third row seat stowed and the second row seat removed, the cargo area is
approximately eight feet long and four feet wide. The back door opening is broad and spacious,
set at a height that makes loading and unloading easy.
A cabin air filter is standard along with an air-conditioning system that controls the
temperature of three separate zones.

Innovative Technologies
A Toyota first rear-seat Dual View Entertainment Center is another innovative option.
The system uses two displays side-by-side to create a seamless 16.4-inch widescreen image
from a single source. When two separate entertainment options are called for, the system can
split the screen into two individual screens, each with input from separate sources. Used as a
single screen, it can be easily seen from the third row, and it can be operated from any seat via
remote control. Used as two screens, the system can accommodate the preferences of two
separate passengers who might want to play a video game or watch a second DVD
simultaneously via auxiliary inputs.
Other technological upgrades include a Toyota-first Panorama Camera rear monitor. It
provides two views behind the vehicle including a 180-degree view, and on-screen back-up
guides, helping drivers to reverse out of parking spots or driveways.

Safety for All
An enhanced version of Toyota's Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is standard on all 2011
Sienna models. VSC coordinates the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake force
Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist with Traction Control (TRAC) and Electric Power Steering
(EPS), to help provide a the driver a better-integrated, controlled vehicle in the event of an
emergency maneuver.
A Pre-Collision System (PCS) with pre-collision seatbelt system is an available option on
Limited, as is the latest in advanced vehicle control technology: Vehicle Dynamics Integrated
Management (VDIM). The VDIM system coordinates brake control with engine output and
steering inputs, allowing all the control and safety systems to cooperate seamlessly. Unlike
reactive traction systems, VDIM operates proactively. During normal driving, the system works
smoothly to enhance control even before the vehicle reaches its limits.
Seven airbags are standard equipment, including dual-stage front and seat-mounted
side airbags for driver and front passenger, plus a new driver's side knee airbag. Side curtain
airbags cover the length of the cabin, from the front seats to the third row.
The new Safety Connect™ telematics system is standard on Limited and optional on
XLE. Safety Connect offers four safety and security features: Automatic Collision Notification,
Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), and Roadside Assistance. A
complimentary one-year trial subscription is included.

In case of airbag deployment or severe rear-end collision, Automatic Collision
Notification is designed to automatically call a response center. If a response agent cannot
communicate with the occupants, the agent can contact the nearest emergency-services
provider to dispatch assistance.
Pushing the in-vehicle "SOS" button allows drivers to reach the response center to
request help in an emergency as well as for a wide range of roadside assistance needs. If a
Sienna equipped with Safety Connect is stolen, agents can work with local authorities to help
locate and recover the vehicle.
The all-new 2011 Sienna will begin arriving at Toyota dealerships in February 2010.

Bob Lutz: I Won't Talk About Fritz But...

The LA Auto Show keynote address wasn't supposed to be important, it was supposed to be Fritz Henderson. However, things changed last night. So everyone is here, listening to Lutz not talk about Fritz Henderson. Except he did. A little

After sarcastically apologizing for GM not providing any news lately he stated "I know you'd like the true, inside story of what really happened at General motors. I'm not giving it to you." At least not until he writes his next book.

But then, because he's Lutz, he did go on to say: "I think all of us were surprised. The whole General Motors team is genuinely saddened over what transpired. Fritz is without question a great executive."

After that it was mostly a discussion of the Volt, why the Asian automakers hated on Li-Ion tech, and talking about how California was getting 100 of the Volts first for a test, which makes sense given the existing electric car charging infrastructure and warmer climate.

The money quote: The transition to electric vehicles is as important as "moving from horses to horsepower." He's now "Maximum Charge" Bob Lutz.

Now Bob Lutz takes the reins...well, of today's speech anyway.

As you can see, the LA Auto show folks just barely had time to replace Fritz's name with Bob's. We'll be there live this morning to see what, if anything, Bob has to say about yesterday's GM leadership musical chairs. Our bet is, however, that he'll be hustled in and out and not allowed to take any comments — but — we'll see if the "Maximum" man near the top of GM lets anything slip. (Hat tip to Rabbi Dave!)

2011 Ford Fiesta: The Party Finally Comes Stateside

Though we saw leaked images of the 2011 Ford Fiesta yesterday, today we've got complete details on Ford's second Europe-to-US entry. The Fiesta hits our shores as either hatchback or sedan with a new dry-clutch automatic transmission and 40MPG highway.

When Ford of Europe originally designed the Fiesta for the rest-of-the-world market, there was no intent to sell the little bugger in the United States. There was no great demand for compact fuel efficient B-segment hatchbacks. Cue the Carpocalypse and that decision was <strike>slowly</strike> quickly reversed. Since the car would need to be Federalized for the US market, it went through some significant rework. The US-spec Fiesta only shares about 60% of its parts with the Euro model, but looking at it from the surface you'd be hard pressed to tell.

The most glaring exterior difference between the two hatchback models is in the nose. The US Fiesta has a considerably beefier front crash bar hiding under that bumper cover so the nose is ever so slightly longer to make room. It also gets in the way of the space formerly reserved for fog lamps, so instead they've been replaced by "driving lights" which are rather slick looking LED lightpipes borrowed from the Verve concept car. Aside from a few tweaks here and there, like integration of the backup lights into the tail lamps and light pattern redesign, and revised grille, that's the story on styling for the hatchback.

Then there's the sedan. We were nervous about the sedan to be honest. There was tremendous potential for monstrous ugliness, but Ford managed to tack on a trunk pretty well. From the rump the Fiesta sedan reminds us of the European Mondeo, but there's a lot of awkwardness in the sheetmetal above the rear wheels. The Sedan is designed as the more grown-up of the two versions and that intent can be seen in the detailing.
As to the motivational equipment for the Fiesta, the car comes with a 1.6-liter double overhead cam inline-four fitted with electronic power assist steering and turning out 119 HP and 109 lb-ft of torque. Mated to the one engine is your choice of either a five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. Thanks to the brand spankin' new "Powershift" automatic transmission, it doesn't even have an impact on fuel economy. The Ford/Getrag effort is essentially two manual transmissions mashed together and actuated with a pair of servos. It operates with a pair of dry clutches swapping between gears dedicated to each. While the Fiesta won't be outfitted with any kind of manual control on the automatic, the transmission is capable of it and with a maximum torque capacity of 184 lb-ft in its current guise, we're thinking it'll be used elsewhere with more sporting intentions (Fiesta ST, Ford, come on, you know you want to). Compare to the four speed auto it replaces and it's responsible for a 10% improvement in fuel economy alone. Fiesta fuel economy is set to be pretty impressive at 30 MPG city and 40 MPG highway.

The front suspension is a Macphereson stut and the rear uses a twist beam axle, and since the car is fitted with all-season tires rather than the de-rigeur seasonal summer tires in Europe, the car's been retuned to retain its zippy nature.

Inside, the Fiesta has undergone revisions over its European buddy, some good, some bad. In order to address the unbelted occupant restraint requiremets for the US, the dash and center console were revised to provide more space behind for impact absorbsion, protecting morons without seat belts on. Safety requirements dictated a lot of the shape changes but also led to a plethora of standard airbags. The Fiesta comes with dual front, thorax and hip, side curtain and knee bolster airbags, more or less a cloud of airbags in a crash and by far the most in this class. The shapes and controls, gauges, and screens are virtually identical to the Euro model, but some paint has been removed and the seats wear different, less pleasant looking fabric. The US model has the option for some really nice leather seats with contrasting piping we're wondering if they swiped from the Lincoln parts bin. Amusingly, a third cup holder has been added in between the two already in the center console and it's sized perfectly to fit a Red Bull style can. We tried it, it works.

In all, the US-spec Fiesta looks like it retains pretty much everything making it such a lovable car in Europe. Considering the amount of rework that had to go into the car, that's no small feat. Now we just need to see how it drives.
