The Perils of Koenigsegg Ownership

Ever since Marcello Gandini designed the Lamborghini Countach’s scissor doors, any serious competitor to the automotive loony throne has had to have a trick door. With the Koenigsegg’s, there’s a slight catch.

It’s not that the Swedes—who have this summer picked up Saab from General Motors—failed to try. The Koenigsegg’s door system, designed by company founder Christian von Koenigsegg, even has a wonderfully pretentious name. Refer to it by anything other than a dihedral synchro-helix actuation system and Mr. von Koenigsegg, pictured above, will pummel you into linguistic submission with a carbon fiber reindeer femur.

Here’s all that dihedral syncro-helix actuation in brief systemic action:

For your big fancy Lamborghini scissor door, opening upwards, danger lurks from above in the form of low-hanging parking garage ceilings and low-flying pelicans. In the case of the Koenigsegg, it’s from curbes, as made explicit by this warning label I photographed on the doorsill of a one-off K’segg built for a Kuwaiti oil millionaire:

Translation: <strike>popping open the extending-and-rotating door</strike> actuating the dihedral syncho-helix system closer than 16" to a curb at least 4" high is sure to result in a very, very expensive crunch of carbon fiber. Not that you’d care if you were in a position to custom-order Koenigseggs, but it’s a nice touch nevertheless.

I sincerely hope you Koenigsegg-owning readers out there are smarter than to open your Swedish hypercar’s doors with such reckless abandon. If not, post your tales of dihedral doom in the comments.

GM Sells Saab To Koenigsegg For Song, Dance

We reported last week GM was close to an agreement for the sale of Saab to Swedish automotive consortium Koenigsegg. Now it's official, with GM reaching a tentative agreement to sell the Swedish brand in exchange for apparently nothing whatsoever.

That's right, as far as we can tell, the deal requires the European Investment Bank to provide $600 million in financing backed by the Swedish government to Saab and "additional support is to be provided by GM and Koenigsegg Group AB to fund Saab's operations and product program investments." Additionally, "as part of the proposed transaction, GM will continue to provide Saab with architecture and powertrain technology during a defined time period. Additionally, Saab plans to produce its next generation 9-5 models in the Saab production facility in Trollhättan, Sweden." No mention if GM's actually getting anything out of this. In fact, it appears to us as though Koenigsegg's getting Saab for pretty much nothing. Good for them. Full press release below.

General Motors and Koenigsegg Group AB Reach Tentative Agreement on Saab

# Deal will secure Saab's future
# EIB expected to provide $600 million financing with state guarantee by the Swedish government
# GM reinvention achieves another milestone

Zurich. General Motors Corp. and Koenigsegg Group AB, a consortium led by Koenigsegg Automotive AB, today confirmed the details of a memorandum of understanding for the purchase of Saab Automobile AB that secures Saab's future.

The sale, expected to close by the end of the third quarter of this year, includes an expected $600 million funding commitment from the European Investment Bank (EIB) guaranteed by the Swedish government. Additional support is to be provided by GM and Koenigsegg Group AB to fund Saab's operations and product program investments. This includes plans to launch several new products that are in the final stages of development. Saab had filed for reorganization under Swedish Law on Feb. 20, 2009. This tentative agreement is a key milestone for Saab to successfully emerge from its reorganization process.

"This is yet another significant step in the reinvention of GM and its European operations," said GM Europe President, Carl-Peter Forster. "Saab is a highly respected automotive brand with great potential. Closing this deal represents the best chance for Saab to emerge a stronger company. Koenigsegg Group's unique combination of innovation, entrepreneurial spirit and financial strength, combined with Koenigsegg's proven ability to create world-class Swedish performance cars in a highly efficient manner, made it the right choice for Saab as well as for General Motors."

As part of the proposed transaction, GM will continue to provide Saab with architecture and powertrain technology during a defined time period. Additionally, Saab plans to produce its next generation 9-5 models in the Saab production facility in Trollhättan, Sweden.

"The proposed agreement will enable us to maximize the brand's potential through an exciting new product line-up with a distinctly Swedish character. Today's announcement is great news for Saab's current and future customers, dealers, suppliers and employees around the globe, said Jan Åke Jonsson, Managing Director of Saab Automobile AB.

The sale will be subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of applicable regulatory, governmental and court approvals. Other terms and conditions specific to the sale are not being disclosed at this time. Deutsche Bank acted as financial advisor to General Motors Corporation.

General Motors Corp., one of the world's largest automakers, was founded in 1908, and today manufactures cars and trucks in 34 countries. With its global headquarters in Detroit, GM employs 235,000 people in every major region of the world, and sells and services vehicles in some 140 countries. In 2008, GM sold 8.35 million cars and trucks globally under the following brands: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, GM Daewoo, Holden, Hummer, Opel, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, Vauxhall and Wuling. GM's largest national market is the U.S., followed by China, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Canada, Russia and Germany. In Europe, GM sells its vehicles in over 40 markets. It operates 10 vehicle-production and assembly facilities in seven countries and employs about 50,000 people. GM Europe executives blog at http://drivingconversations.com.To support informed discussion and fact-based reporting, GM and Opel & Vauxhall have launched a new website at http://gmeuropefactsandfiction.com.

Koenigsegg Group AB is a consortium of private investors led by Koenigsegg Automotive AB. Koenigsegg Automotive AB manufactures supercars. It has representatives in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North America, and the Oceania. The company was founded in 1994 and is based in Ängelholm, Sweden.

That would be the best thing to happen to the brand that's not really born from jets since GM bought it in 1990.

The three remaining bidders for Saab are Koenigsegg, billionaire Ira Rennert and Jim Press's personal saviour, Fiat.

"According to sources close to GM the toughest battle is expected between U.S. billionaire Ira Rennert and Swedish carmaker Koenigsegg," reports Swedish paper Dagens Industri, which goes on to state that Koenigsegg has lined up financing from a group of "very wealthy people."

As former Saab enthusiasts, we've got all our fingers and toes crossed for a Koenigsegg purchase. The engineering know-how and enthusiasm of that brand might just be the only thing capable of restoring the Swedish automaker to its former glory as a maker of truly weird and wonderful cars. That might change thanks to Koenigsegg engineer Mattias Vöx and his re-imagined, 600HP, V8-powered modern Volvo P1800.

Don't get us wrong, the two Swedish companies won't officially be working together to build the new Volvo P1800, but their engineering know-how will be in full effect. Vöx has approached Swedish design firm Vizualtech to handle the styling elements of the newly proposed one-off car which, as you can see above, is fairly faithful to the original 1960s design. When viewed next to a classic P1800, you'll first notice that Vizualtech has designed in larger wheel openings to accommodate larger wheels and they've also added 70mm to the front of the car to help fit the proposed powertrain.

Taking cues from his previous 1967 Volvo Amazon station wagon SEMA build, Vöx will supply the new P1800 with a tuned and turbocharged 600-horsepower V8 lifted from a Volvo XC90 SUV mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

We're excited to see this project come to fruition and desperately hope that it isn't just some Swedish meatball pipe dream as so many of these types of projects turn out to be. A report from Car Middle East claims the mad men over at Koenigsegg are planning a four-door, all carbon fiber, 700 HP super sedan to make those others look like <s>photo-</s>chopped liver. The report also claims the car is planned to hit the showroom in 2010, and has been under development for two years. But what about the boasts? Well, Koenigsegg’s Dubai manager said the car "will weigh less than any other performance saloon on sale, and will have a top speed of 350 KPH." Cause nothing says "I'm badass" like a 217 MPH afternoon with the family. [CarMiddleEast]

Koenigsegg CCXR Edition: Tripping the Light Fantastic

Remember the Christopher Walken skit on Saturday Night Live where the inveterate creepy guy continues asking Will Ferrell for more cowbell? Well the Koenigsegg CCXR Edition needs more carbon fiber. The rebodied CCX is positively rotten with the stuff and the twin turbocharged, E85 sipping 1018 HP heart makes us almost feel like this outshines the Bugatti Veyron Fbg par Hermes which sits just down the row. This car speaks to our inner 17-year-old like a like a prom queen on a bender.

The Koenigsegg CCXR Edition is a duel fuel car, running on plain old dino juice the 4.8L twin turbo V8 cranks out 888 BHP. Fill 'er up with E85 ethanol and the car snorts out that mind bending 1085 BHP and will crush your internal organs on its way to sixty in less than 2.9 seconds, 125 MPH (or 200 KPH) doesn't take much longer at 8.9 ticks. Er... yeah, numbers like that don't even make sense to us but we like that kind of thinking. More cowbell!

Where else would the first street legal Koenigsegg CCX end up than swinging Las Vegas? The great thing about bringing the car to Vegas is that if you accidentally marry a tranny stripper one night you can just take the CCX to its top speed of 245 mph and go back in time to prevent the nuptials (and whatever else happened that night). The privilege of owning an early U.S. example of the Koenigsegg will set you back about $935,00 and a full year of wait time. Enjoy the video of Clarkson taking it up to 11 above.

More than 10 of the CCX's have been ordered already and will be available for pickup at the only U.S. Koenigsegg dealership, which just happens to be in the heart of Caesars Palace. Now that we've finally figured out how to properly spell Koenigsegg we're going to say it a few times. Koenigsegg, Koenigsegg, Koenigsegg.

Thursday's Bugatti vs. McLaren debate was fun, no? The McLaren handily won, garnering just over 65% of the vote. And I don't think anyone is too shocked by that result. Given the choice between pre-meltdown Jenna Jameson and Taylor Rain, the true connoisseur chooses Miss Rain. Every time. Ahem. Today we're presenting you the two other hypercars to <s>scream at each other over</s> debate and discuss. We think the Koenigsegg is better looking and we know it's faster. Still, the Pagani simply screams ultra-exotic and really does seem to have been designed by an alien race. Other than that, I mean, yeah... how do you decide? It'd be like choosing between Sophie Evans and Jenna Haze.

Koenigsegg CCXR Special Edition: Biofueled For Your Pleasure

The Dutch Blog on all things Auto has acquired themselves what appear to be the first renderings of the brand-new special edition Koenigsegg CCX-R. So what makes the already announced but as-of-yet unrevealed Koenigsegg-egg-egg-gg so special? Well — this here CCX is biofuel-powered. That's right — so that means this red-on-black Special Edition model featuring a cast-aluminium V8 engine with sequential multipoint fuel injection and twin rotrex centrifugal superchargers is not only pretending to be environmentally friendly, it's also a performance model — due to the biofuel having higher octane and cooling characteristics. That means the power on this Veyron-dethroning supercar's gone up to 1018 HP at 7200 rpm and the torque to 780 lb-ft at 6100 rpm — talk about a well-spiced Swedish meatball, right? On a side note, the Swedes would also like to point out the CCXR is the first homologated car currently in production to reach over 1000 BHP — not that they're braggarts or anything. Full flower-filled press release after the jump.

Press Release:

Competition Coupe GT
DOWN TUNED TO 600+ HP in order to comply with race regulations.

Koenigsegg has created a new race car - the CCGT, based on the production CC-model range. The CCGT complies with the ACO and FIA GT1 regulations.

The CCGT engine is based on the Koenigsegg CCX production engine with the superchargers removed but enlarged to 5.0 litre.

The reliability of the race engine is expected be exceptional as it is based on the proven strength and durability of the signifi cantly more powerful road car engine.

The minimum weight allowed for a GTI race car is 1,100 kg and most manufacturers struggle to meet this target, having to undergo massive weight saving programs.

Due to the fact the Koenigsegg CC cars are very light and stiff in road confi guration, the racing CCGT weighs in at just under an astounding 1,000 kg. This gives the possibility to place 100 kg of ballast freely within the car structure, still following the set rules. This should give Koenigsegg an interesting advantage over the competition.

The CCGT has very short overhangs, which could be seen as an issue when it comes to generating enough downforce. However, by further developing the clever and "slippery" design concept of the CC range, Koenigsegg believes they have created a unique package incorporating a surprising amount of down-force combined with a very compact package and optimal weight distribution. Since the CCGT has a short overall length and low overall height, whilst still maintaining adequate track width and length, it is thereby gifted with superior agility compared to most of the competition, which should be evident in future heated racing combats.

The Koenigsegg CCGT development team, headed by Dag B lenius, has done a superb job by refining the CC into the CCGT.

The race engine is being developed in-house in parallel with the production units by Koenigsegg engineers, supported by Anders Hoglund from Cargine engineering and JP Motorsport.

What can you say about a million dollar car that tries to kill people while others are watching, other than "Get get me John Carpenter and Hal Needham, stat." The 806-hp Koenigsegg CCX is gaining that kind of reputation, though no one's been killed and no Koenigseggs have shown up on Wrecked Exotics yet. Still, on an episode of "Top Gear" you'll recall, a CCX tried to at least maim the Stig, though Stiggy struck back after the company slapped on a wing to turn in the fastest time ever on the BBC show's test track. Now, a guy in Norway got his arse rotated by an angry CCX, which had the wing. Wing or no, the K-egg is obviously not to be trifled with in front of an audience.

Koenigsegg CCX to Go On Sale in Vegas

Famous for being the only car ever to attempt to kill the Stig on camera, the Koeniggsegg CCX will launch in the US in Las Vegas on Saturday, August 27th in Las Vegas. To be sold by Exotic Cars at Caesar's Palace (because Roman chintz and mirrored ceilings are the perfect compliment to a 260mph supercar), they're throwing a VIP party on August 27th followed by two days of track time at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The 4.7L, twin-<strike>turbo</strike> supercharged mill pumps out 806hp, and the whole car weighs in at a sprightly 2,200 <strike>ton</strike> lbs, allowing it to run a 9-second quarter mile at 146. It's sort of obscene that the thing is even road legal. What we wanna know is, who's gonna be the first to have an Enzo Moment in one?

Shame on us, but if you also were a bit busy this Memorial Day weekend, you're like us and may have missed Sunday's episode of Top Gear. Luckily some friendly BBC viewers have rectified our poor judgement by providing video of the most important segment from the show. A couple of weeks back, the best-est automotive show on earth tested the new Koenigsegg CCX, and the Stig ended up taking it into the fields to the side of the second to last turn on the infamous airfield course. The CCX had a bit of a problem — not enough downforce. The folks at Koenigsegg took it back and fitted it with a right new wing on the back. The result was...well, it was...epic. The car went on to blitz the track in the fastest ever time — 1:17.6. Now kiddies, here's what's coming up in this weekend's episode.

The Soundtrack of Koenigsegg

Koenigsegg's assembled a compilation album featuring tracks from 12 music producers from Sweden, Germany, France and the UK — an endeavor to create the "Soundtrack of Koenigsegg," according to a press release from the company. The producers' roster reads like a who's who of who's that?, or something you might see printed on a Venutian accounting firm's stationery: Ha kan Lidbo, Caf Colombie, Filthy, Beatmaskin & Jocco, Moodorama, Ekwall, Rhody, 7eCiel, Kryptonite, and Rico. The company says the full effect of the compilation can only be achieved if played when driving a Koenigsegg, preferably (it would seem) at an altitude of 45,000 feet. It's available on iTunes.

The Forbeses rock out with an overview of the most expensive cars in the world. Interestingly enough, less than half of the list is taken up by major manufacturers, and Lambo, Ferrari, Rolls and Bentley are conspicuously absent. Also, two American cars made the list: the SSC Ultimate Aero and the Saleen S7 Twin Turbo. If there were different prices listed for the same model, we chose the American price, 'cuz we're all isolationist and crap. Click through for the list.

Bugatti Veyron - $1,192,057

Pagani Zonda Roadster F C12S 7.3, Clubsport - $667,321

I Travel at Extreme Speed: The Koenigsegg CCX

Yesterday, Koenigsegg released pics and info on the extreme CCX supercar it's bringing to Geneva this year. As we already know, the CCX will be coming to the US, where it will charm the living daylights of the country's state troopers with an estimated top speed of 245 mph. Click through for pics and release.

Press Release:

First Impression

The first impression of the Koenigsegg CC is its dynamic stance and futuristic, aggressive attitude. It appears amazingly low and broad, with the cockpit-like semicircular windscreen and organically shaped rear hood as key features. The smooth and polished body is gently curved, almost simplistic; a fully integrated design. Lines and surfaces appear thoroughbred and slippery, projecting an image of velocity onto the machine. This design shouts in a clear and universal language: I travel at extreme speed .

Machined for Speed

Koenigsegg's design seeks to give an interpretation of strength and flowing motion. The body of a Koenigsegg is formed for one ultimate purpose; superior performance. Its beauty is the beauty of speed itself. The surfaces are shaped to perfect aerodynamics, an appearance that does not deceive. All aspects of this machine serve its one fundamental objective; performance.

Both the body and chassis of a Koenigsegg are made of extremely lightweight carbon fiber composite, reinforced with Kevlar and aluminum honeycomb. Its race-bred suspension system brings the driver in control of all movement, even under the toughest racing conditions.

Overview

Koenigsegg manufactures exclusive super cars for a select elite of enthusiasts. Space age materials and uncompromising quality both in finish and function make these cars among the very best in the automotive history. The CCX overall performance is unmatched by any other series-produced car today.

Two models have currently been in production; the CC8S, and the magnificent 806 hp CCR, which still holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest and most powerful streetcar. Both Koenigsegg models are built to excel on the road or racetrack, yet are still highly comfortable for long distance traveling.

A Machine for Safe Driving

Koenigsegg creates each car specifically for each customer. They are individual pieces of art. Leather contrasted with futuristic controls and refined surfaces enclose the occupants. It is an environment for adventure. The Koenigsegg hardtop is stored under the front bonnet during roofless driving. Crash-tests have verified that in terms of safety, a Koenigsegg is a truly Swedish car.

The CCX is the latest iteration of the Koenigsegg CC family. The CCX is in many aspects a new car since it has been re-engineered to comply with the US regulation and market demands. Still, it has been a key issue for the Koenigsegg Team to keep the distinctive and record breaking CC shape. Koenigsegg believes it is important to avoid trends and instead hone the aerodynamic shape of the CC range for the future, only enhancing its unique look and appearance with tighter lines and a more aggressive stance. At Koenigsegg they also believe in continuity. A new Koenigsegg shall show clear lineage from its predecessor and shall not follow any other design trends but enhance its already proven concept and shape to perfection.

Body & Interior

The CCX features a completely new set of body and interior parts. The new body incorporates a new front bumper design, engineered to function well in the stringent 2.5 mph bumper test, including enhanced brake cooling, fog lamps and US side position lights. The front lamps have been slightly redesigned to suit the new bumper line.

There is a new scoop on the front bonnet acting as a larger fresh air-intake for the occupants and new air vents have been added behind the front wheels in order to further evacuate air from the cockpit. The frontal shape revisions now allow for effective track use options to be added.

The side rocker panels feature side skirts in order to further enhance downforce by increasing underbody area. The new exterior of the car has been created using the industry leading Icem Surf CAD software, guaranteeing a perfect fit and finish as well as optimal highlights.

The car is 88 mm longer in order to comply with the US rear impact regulations and in order to free up space around the rear muffler. The rear clamshell now features a glass window over the new CCX engine, clearly showing off the bespoke and unique Koenigsegg Block casting. The mufflers have received improved cooling, by incorporating grill vents above in the clamshell. The number plate area is now adapted to suit both US and Euro size number plates.

Space

There is a further 50 mm in headroom, making the CCX the most spacious super car on the market, truly considering the taller drivers needs. Koenigsegg believes to have found a unique market niche by enabling really tall drivers to fit well inside the car, still with its highest point only1120 mm above the tarmac.

Seats

In corporation with Sparco, and Koenigsegg test driver Loris Bicocchi, Koenigsegg has developed a new seat design for the CCX. The structure of the seat are still carbon fiber, but now feature fully padded front surface and a tilting backrest. The striking and very comfortable Tempur padded CCR seats can still be fitted in the CCX on special order.

Wheels / Brakes

The optimal ceramic 382 mm front discs are coupled to 8 piston calipers and in the rear the 362 mm size is retained with 6 piston calipers. The optional industry first carbon fiber wheels save another 3 kg per wheel compared to the already lightweight magnesium wheels that comes as standard. The ceramic discs save another 2 kg per wheel, giving the Koenigsegg CCX lower unsprung weight than any other super car.

Koenigsegg now also offers the ceramic disc and carbon wheel upgrade to all previous Koenigsegg models.

Aerodynamic Enhancement

Between the raised speedster humps there is a new type of vortex generator originally conceived and patented by Torbj rn Gustavsson at Vortaflow and implemented as a Ram Air engine booster by Christian Koenigsegg on the CCX. Due to the fact that there is a fresh air engine intake right below the rear window, the vortex generator redirects the air directly into the air intake and thereby creating a positive pressure in the air box. To normally obtain this phenomenon in a mid engine car a roof scoop is required, increasing frontal area. In the case of the CCX, the small frontal area can still be kept and rearward visibility is unaffected, even though it has now got true ram air intake over its mid mounted engine.

Electronics

The CCX now features, wholly digital, intelligent fuse and relay unit. This means that there are not physical fuses or relays as such. The unit is programmable and is can-bus connected to a display unit which sends crucial information to the driver. The main advantages of this system are its reliability, light weight, small physical size, programmability and direct information to the driver. The system is prepared for future upgrades and functions.

Unique Koenigsegg Engine

The engine in the CCX retains the incredible performance and power of the CCR engine, while running on US 91 octane fuel and complying with California emission regulations. In order to reach this challenging goal, extensive rework had to be done to emission related items, such as new cylinder heads with larger valve area and more optimally flowing cylinder head ports. Dual smaller injectors per cylinder were integrated, as well as new camshafts, a new carbon fiber individual runner intake plenum, a new engine management system, updated fuel and EVAP system. New exhaust system where the catalytic converters are moved closer to the engine for earlier light-off time. A returnless fuel system has also been implemented with pumps integrated into the new fuel tank. All in all, a heavy rework in order to retain the unique performance of the CCX engine and at the same time comply with the strictest emission regulations in the world.

The new and cleaner CCX engine also incorporates the first engine block design that is specifically created and cast for Koenigsegg, with the Koenigsegg shield embossed in the casting on both left and right side of the engine block. The new block design is an all aluminum construction made out of 356 aluminum with T7 heat treat that has undergone a High Intensity Pressure process in order to further enhance block integrity as well as cylinder bore chill during casting. The new block reaffirms the future development of Koenigsegg engines and makes Koenigsegg stand out among low volume supercar manufacturers, due to the fact that Koenigsegg engineer the engine completely in house in combination with the fact that it is also built, assembled, and dyno tested in the Koenigsegg production plant. The Koenigsegg Engineers also incorporated the most powerful internal piston coolers in the industry bringing down the piston temperature, by as much as 80% more than competing systems, which was a must in order to run high cylinder pressure with 91 octane fuel.

Koenigsegg to Bring New CCX Supercar to the US

Among supercars that can travel one-third the speed of sound (at sea level, natch) the Bugatti Veyron gets all the press, having recently hit 252 mph — besting the Koeingsegg CCR's 241 mph — to make the Bug the world's fastest production car. Now, Sweden's Koenigsegg is plotting to answer Volkswagen's stomping, with a new, 800-hp supercar that, joy of joys, will be available in the US. The new model, the Koenigsegg CCX, is set for a Geneva show debut, according to the boys at Gizmag. Though it likely won't defeat the Veyron, it will go from zero to 62 in 3.2 seconds and run a nine-second quarter-mile at 146 mph. At around $650,000, it'll even be a kind of bargain, in a twisted, overindulgent sort of way. [Thanks to Rob for the tip.]

Have Yourself a Merry Little Swedish Supercar Christmas

The folks at Sweden's supercar builder, Koenigsegg want to wish you and yours (your plebeian sedan, of course) a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year of Going Really, Really Fast. (We added that last part.) Were just wondering how they got the Ghost of Supercars Past to materialize for the shot. Swedes are really good at trick photography.

Koenigsegg Laptop!

We saw recently that Lamborghini's introducing a branded laptop, and not to be outdone, Swedish speed-freaks Koenigsegg now have one of their own for sale. Apparently, notebook computer design is the next great frontier of the high-performance automobile industry. Who knew? Personally, we think it's kinda on the dorkier side, but then again, we're betting that most supercar owners have more than a little dork juice pumping through their veins. As for us? We're waiting for the Lions Dragstrip memorial Powerbook.
