Lexus To Unveil Hatch Concept At Frankfurt Show

Lexus will be tossing water on its boring image with a stylish, Corolla-based five door hybrid hatchback concept. It'll preview a 2011 model year competitor for the Audi A3. Despite the hybridization and low-priced roots, it kinda looks interesting.

We're a little leery of the Corolla underpinnings on what looks to aim for the grown-up hot hatch market, but it sounds like Lexus might finally be putting forward an offering for a slightly younger market. The as-yet unnamed five door hatch concept will debut at Frankfurt with the production version coming along at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010. The car will get a four cylinder in base trim and the 187 HP 2.4-liter hybrid powertrain out of the Lexus HS250h for the top-of-the-line model. If the performance is in any way backed by the looks, Lexus might finally have an entry that'll sell to the under-40 crowd.
Down on the Street...in Tokyo: The Chevy MW Is The Opel Agila

As we continue to clean out our CompactFlash cards, we've found another piece of metal from the Tokyo streets. Here's the perfect example of a city car produced by the General that they just don't build or sell over in this here part of the globe. This five-door 'merican Revolution is the Chevy MW, and it's a re-badged Vauxhall Agila which is a re-badged Opel Agila which in turn is a re-badged Suzuki Wagon R. As a Suzuki, the MW was first built in Japan, but now in all forms is built at GM's Gliwice, Poland plant. Speaking of the Opelized version, did we mention the second-generation 2008 Opel Agila was unveiled in Frankfurt earlier this year? Oh wait, we've found some shots of the reveal of that one on our many CF cards as well. The newest model of the Agila will be powered by either one of two gas engines — a three cylinder 1.0-liter 65 HP model and a four cylinder 1.2-liter engine rated at 86 HP — and a diesel 1.3-liter four cylinder engine rated at 75 HP. Will the new 2008 Agila have as many re-branded options as the earlier models? You betcha. The General's already planning for the new Agila to be sold by Suzuki as the Splash. Ah, the sweet smell of platform prostitution and brand whoring. Don't you just love the global automotive industry?

Frankfurt Auto Show: Porsche GT2 Roundup

From the can't get nearly enough of the Porsche GT2 department comes these shots from the Frankfurt floor. Yes, we have posted the spy photos and brochure. Alas, we have yet to find a good frankfurter mit mustard here in Frankfurt. Specifications and press release redux after the jump.

Press Release:

The New Porsche 911 GT2

Highlights
The 911 GT2 is the fastest and most powerful Porsche 911 homologated for the road to ever see the light of day. Its 3.6-litre horizontally-opposed six-cylinder power unit with biturbo technology develops maximum output of 530 bhp (390 kW) at a speed of 6,500 rpm. Maxi¬mum torque of 680 Newton-metres or 501 lb-ft, in turn, is maintained consistently over a speed range from 2,200 - 4,500 rpm. Acceleration to 100 km/h comes in just 3.7 seconds and the new top sports model within the 911 Series reaches a staggering top speed of 329 km/h or 204 mph.

Full of character, full of efficiency
The low-slung spoiler lip at the front and the rear wing so characteristic of this very special model give the 911 GT2 remarkable down force both front and rear, while at the same time maintaining the silhouette so characteristic of this top model. Low weight of 1,440 kg or 3,175 lb, rear-wheel drive and a superior drag coefficient of Cd = 0.32 ensure not only exceptional sportiness and performance, but also a supreme standard of all-round efficiency. As a result, the 911 GT2 consumes just 12.5 litres/100 km of premium plus fuel in the composite EU test (equal to 22.6 mpg imp), thus offering a standard of fuel economy exceptionally good for a car of this kind.

A world-first achievement: the expansion intake manifold
Using the oscillating air during the cooler expansion phase is a genuine revolution in turbo¬charged engine technology. So benefiting from a brand-new, innovative expansion-type intake system with its own special geometry and an exhaust gas turbocharger with variable turbine geometry operating at a maximum pressure of 1.4 bar, new 911 GT2 offers an extra 50 bhp over the already very powerful 911 Turbo.

Chassis with PASM and ceramic brake system
Compared with the 911 Carrera, the new 911 GT2 has been lowered by approx 25 mm or 1.00", with the chassis and suspension geared specifically to the needs of this very dynamic car. And as one would rightly expect of a Porsche sports car, the GT2 comes with unusually powerful and effective brakes, PCCB Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes featuring brake discs measuring 380 millimetres or 14.96" in diameter at the front and 350-millimetre (13.78") brake discs at the rear fitted as standard on this top-of-the-range sports model.

Three-stage PSM and Launch Assistant
Featured for the first time in the 911 GT2, PSM Porsche Stability Management can be deac¬tivated in two stages, with the ABS anti-lock brake system always remaining active: The driver is able to deactivate lateral and longitudinal dynamic control in a successive process, thus gearing the car's driving behaviour to his individual demands and requirements. The new Launch Assistant, in turn, enables the driver, via the engine control unit, to accelerate with optimum power and performance from a standstill, TC Traction Control ensuring opti¬mum longitudinal dynamics in the acceleration process.
Titanium exhaust gas system and folding sports bucket seats

The new 911 GT2 is the first Porsche homologated for road use to be fitted as standard with an exhaust system featuring a titanium rear-end silencer and titanium tailpipes. Compared with a comparable silencer made of stainless steel, titanium reduces the weight of the entire system by approximately 50 per cent.

Another new feature in the 911 GT2 is the sports bucket seats likewise fitted as standard. And a further advantage in this case is that the backrests fold individually to any desired position, maintaining optimum lateral stability at all times.

The New Porsche 911 GT2
Top Performance in the 911
The 911 GT2 is the new top performer in the 911 model series. Through its striking design with extra-large air intake scoops at the front and the characteristic rear wing, this fastest of all models in the 911 series clearly demonstrates its supreme performance right from the start, before even setting off. Indeed, these design and streamlining features so characte¬ristic of the 911 GT2 give the car an exemplary drag coefficient of Cd = 0.32, together with down¬force on both the front and rear axle.
Available only with a manual six-speed gearbox, the 911 GT2 supersports accelerates to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 329 km/h or 204 mph.

Two turbochargers for extra power
The power unit of the new 911 GT2 is based on the flat-six already featured in the 911 Turbo, with two exhaust gas turbochargers using variable turbine geometry (VTG) providing the requisite supply of air. Maximum output of 530 bhp (390 kW) from this 3.6-litre boxer engine comes at 6,500 rpm, peak torque is 680 Newton-metres (501 lb-ft) maintained consistently over a wide speed range between 2,200 and 4,500 rpm. And with the car's unladen weight being just 1,440 kg or 3,175 lb, the power-to-weight ratio is 2.72 kg or 6.00 lb per horsepower.

Innovative air supply
The extra power of the engine in the new 911 GT2 versus the 911 Turbo is provided by two exhaust gas turbochargers with an enlarged compressor wheel and the flow-optimised tur¬bine housing, both of which are laid out for even higher charge pressure.

A further point is that Porsche's engineers have for the first time combined the turbocharged power unit in the 911 GT2 with a so-called expansion-type intake manifold - a genuine revo¬lution in the concept of turbocharged power units. The principle applied in this case is to use the oscillating intake air during the cooler expansion phase to prepare the fuel/air mix¬ture, keeping the temperature of the fuel/air mixture lower than in the engine of the 911 Turbo. This ensures a significant increase in all-round efficiency - more power on less fuel, with fuel consumption dropping by up to 15 per cent under full load. As a result, average composite fuel consumption in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) of 12.5 litres/100 km or 22.6 mpg imp is exceptionally good for a car of this class - and thanks to its new exhaust system, the new 911 GT2 also outperforms the EU4 emission standard.

Extra-light exhaust system
The 911 GT2 offers new developments and highlights not only on the intake manifold, but also on the exhaust side: This is the first Porsche homologated for the road to feature a rear-¬end silencer and tailpipes made as standard of titanium, an extra-light but stable material. Weighing approximately 9 kilos, the silencer is roughly 50 per cent lighter than a comparable component made of stainless steel.

Setting off with the Launch Assistant
The new 911 GT2 is likewise the first production sports car from Porsche to feature a Launch Assistant enabling the driver to set off with optimum performance and ensuring simple hand¬ling at all times.
To activate the Launch Assistant, all the driver has to do is press down the throttle in full with the car at a standstill, the appropriate gear in mesh, and the clutch pedal pressed to the floor. Then the system will automatically set engine speed to exactly the right level, the driver's only task then being to take his foot off the clutch as quickly as possible in order to accelerate the car with maximum speed and power.
In this process PSM Porsche Stability Management prevents the car from "twitching", with the full power of the engine being transmitted smoothly to the road.

Rear-wheel drive on the 911 GT2 comes with an asymmetrical limited-slip differential main¬taining a locking factor of 28 per cent under power and 40 per cent in overrun.

Porsche's new supersports runs on 19-inch wheels combined with specially developed tyres measuring 235/35 at the front and 325/30 at the rear. Tyre pressure, finally, is supervised and maintained by sensors in the tyre pressure control system also featured as standard.
Specially set-up PASM damper system and upgraded PSM

The chassis and suspension of the new 911 GT2 is based on the chassis of the 911 GT3, while at the same time the entire set-up is approximately 25 millimetres or 1.00" lower and firmer than on the 911 Carrera.

PASM Porsche Active Suspension Management featured as standard on the new 911 GT2 has also been modified accordingly, with somewhat firmer and tauter damper action in the Normal mode, as opposed to an extra-firm and taut suspension in the Sports mode suited ideally for use on the race track.
The new 911 GT2 comes as standard with PCCB brakes featuring ceramic brake discs. The exceptional features of this brake system include in particular a very fast response, enormous stability against fading, superior safety reserves, and low weight.

Compared with grey-cast-iron brakes of the same size, PCCB reduces unsprung masses in the car by approximately 20 kg or 44 lb.

Yet another innovative feature developed by Porsche's engineers for the new 911 GT2 is PSM Porsche Stability Management specifically tailored to the new model: Giving the driver the option to deactivate various components, this special driving stability system meets the de¬mands of even the most sporting and dynamic motorist. To set up the system to his spe¬cific requirements, all the driver has to do is press two buttons in the front centre con¬sole: Pressing the SC OFF (SC: Stability Control) button, the driver deactivates lateral dynamic control. By additionally pressing the SC+TC OFF (TC: Traction Control) button, the driver also switches off longitudinal dynamic control, while the ABS brake system remains active at all times.

Innovative sports bucket seats
The high-performance concept of the 911 GT2 also includes sports bucket seats made of a very light combination of glass- and carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (GFP/CFP) with a visible carbon surface, featured as standard on the new model. Incorporating a new type of manual adjustment, the sports bucket seats combine unusually good side stability with enhanced access to the area behind the front seats, thanks to the backrests tilting forward whenever required.

Frankfurt Auto Show: 2009 Jaguar XF

Here you go kids, it's your brand-saving entry from Shag-you-are, the XF. Yeah, it's not as hot as the XF Concept, even though Mr. Cullum promised it would be. Still, this cat's got some good curves on her, even going so far as aping Aston's DB9 from behind. Dare we say that perhaps we were a bit too hasty in our initial verdict? Or does everything look simply snazzy under 17 coats of wax, professional lighting and 50 gallons of none-more-black paint? And have we shown you the interior? No, really, have a look at the gorgeous orange seats. You'll plotz. We did.

THE NEW JAGUAR XF

Challenging convention and setting its own rules, the new Jaguar XF fuses the style and performance of a sports car with the refinement, space and sophistication of a luxury saloon. This is the beginning of a new era for Jaguar.

The new XF: a dramatic expression of a bold new Jaguar design language, with a driving experience that exceeds expectations created by the striking appearance: relaxed and confident, with outstanding ability and control.

Resolutely true to the Jaguar philosophy of creating Beautiful, Fast cars, the XF goes further, adding a new dimension to the marque. The four-door XF has the visual excitement of a coupe, but room inside for five adults to enjoy an interior wholly contemporary in style yet uniquely Jaguar.

As well as space, the new XF's interior ambiance is enriched by crafted, luxurious materials, sophisticated instruments and calm interior mood lighting. Engineering excellence and attention to detail mean the XF's interior matches the best-in-class for refinement, while Jaguar's intelligent use of technology and driver-friendly Touch-screen controls add new layers of comfort and ease of use.

Every XF model has shift-by-wire transmission control, with Jaguar's class-leading sequential shift system - its popularity already confirmed by feedback from XK sports car customers - used for the first time in a saloon. Shift-by-wire replaces manual shift linkages with electronic commands and gives every XF rapid and very smooth gearshifts - faster, even, than the acclaimed XK's transmission.

The Jaguar Sequential ShiftTM System gives the driver the option of one-touch manual gearchange control via steering-wheel mounted paddles. There are also multiple JaguarDrive ControlTM transmission modes, including Dynamic and Winter settings, which interact with throttle progression, Dynamic Stability Control thresholds and shift strategy to match mood and conditions.

But the most exciting feature of the XF's transmission control is the all-new JaguarDrive SelectorTM - an industry-first rotary shift interface that combines precise, intuitive control with space-saving packaging, to allow maximisation of interior storage options.

Other innovative functional features add more 'surprise and delight'. Air-conditioning vents present a flush dashboard surface until the ignition is switched on, at which point they elegantly rotate to the open position. Another new technology - JaguarSenseTM - introduces touch or proximity-sensing control for overhead console lights and the glovebox release.

Every level of audio system features at least eight speakers, with a premium system designed in association with highly respected audio specialist Bowers & Wilkins available on range-topping models. Radio options now include a Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) system and Sirius Satellite Radio for the North American market, while the XF technology count includes Bluetooth® communications technology, plus optional iPod® and MP3 player connectivity with full-function control through the Touch-screen - and an auxiliary port on every car for other portable audio devices.

Other available features include JaguarVoiceTM control to operate navigation and telephone functions, Blind Spot Monitor, Front and Rear Parking Aids and Rear Camera Parking Aid, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Speed Limiter, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and Electronic Parking Brake.

Mick Mohan, XF Chief Programme Engineer comments:

"The interior of the XF is a combination of style and substance. It bristles with innovative, industry-leading features. From the smart technical solution of the JaguarDrive SelectorTM, through the seamless efficiency of rotating vents, to the simplicity of Touch-screen control, the XF proves aesthetics and function can work together in perfect harmony."

Engineering excellence and class-leading structural rigidity are at the heart of the new XF's construction. The advanced body structure, which comprises high-tech materials and new-generation design techniques, maximises strength and minimises weight to give the XF superb performance, refinement and efficiency across its range of V6 and V8 engines. These engines include the quietest diesel engine in its class and a supercharged V8 that delivers outstanding levels of performance.

The new XF is best in class for torsional stiffness, and with a wide rear track displays excellent handling characteristics. These elements underpin a dynamic ethos that is driver-focussed yet supremely comfortable and refined. Just as its looks promise, the new XF excels across the board, in every role from a sports car to a luxurious long-distance cruiser.

From the I think it might be a minivan department comes the Dodge Journey. After seeing a surprising number of Chrysler minivans on the roads here in Frankfurt, we can see the appeal a space wagon equipped with a 2.0L turbodiesel from the Dodge might have for the European market. David and Danya changed outfits magically while metallic confetti distracted everybody temporarily, from noticing the Journey had appeared! Steve Perry was not on hand to belt out Don't Stop Believing, and thankfully there was no vocal laxative effect. So there are now officially two cool things about the Opel Flextreme concept car revealed here at the Frankfurt Auto Show last night. The first would have to be the fact that the concept's a diesel-electric hybrid — and we heart the idea of mating the two fuel efficiencies together. The second is that the Flextreme has two little Segways that it stores in its rear end. It's adorable. Oh, you want to know more? Check after the jump.

From the original post from the reveal of the new dual-powertrain GM concept car:

"The Flextreme takes the new design language debuted in the GTC Coupé at the Geneva Motor Show several steps further. With the forward-opening rear doors (FlexDoor®), a large transparent roof and two tailgate doors that open from the side and swing upwards, the concept car continues Opel's tradition of particularly flexible and practical body concepts with attractive designs. This also includes the innovative FlexLoad® additional underfloor luggage compartment.

The big surprise for the IAA are two high-tech electric personal transporters, ingeniously packaged below the cargo floor. They can be used in areas that cars cannot enter, thereby adding an extra mobility option. The electric scooters provide up to 38 km (23 miles) of clean mobility."

Look, they're both adorable and doubly environmentally friendly!

Saab celebrates three decades of leadership in turbocharging at this year's Frankfurt International Motor Show by launching the Saab Turbo X, a driver-focused performance car that sets new standards for the brand.

This black limited edition model takes Saab 'back to the future' by evoking the iconic appeal of its first black 900 Turbo and introducing innovative Saab XWD technology.

It is unveiled today (11 Sept), exactly 30 years after Saab surprised the automotive world at Frankfurt when it revealed its first turbocharged model. That set a trend other manufacturers were to follow. Now Saab unleashes turbo power for the first time through Saab XWD, a cutting edge all-wheel-drive system that sets performance standards competitors will also seek to emulate.

With 400 Nm of torque from its 280 hp/ 206 kW 2.8V6 turbo engine, the Turbo X is the ultimate performance expression of the new Saab 9-3 range. Saab XWD features active management that not only splits torque delivery between both axles, but also between the rear wheels. This responsive system delivers a level of driver involvement and dynamic chassis control never seen before from Saab.

In addition to tuning of the suspension and its electronic chassis, throttle and powertrain settings, the Turbo X features distinctive styling additions that enhance aerodynamic performance.

Available in Sport Sedan or SportCombi bodystyles, the Saab Turbo X limited edition showcases the launch of Saab XWD. The order book is now open and the first customer deliveries are expected during the second quarter of next year. Each example can carry a personalized message in the main instrument display.

Sports tuned chassis optimizes all-wheel-drive benefits

The Saab Turbo X adds a new dimension in chassis control to Saab's unrivalled experience in turbocharging. It is the result of a development program that leverages the full potential of Saab's innovative XWD system, with the car's sports tuned suspension, brakes and electronic control systems all aligned to meet a single need: driving satisfaction.

Saab XWD is an active all-wheel-drive system designed to optimize vehicle handling and stability. (Refer to New Saab 9-3 release for full technical description). Its sophisticated electronic control allows fine balancing of drive torque, not only between the two axles but also between the rear wheels. In effect, this stretches the performance envelope of the chassis, for example, raising the threshold at which ESP throttle and braking interventions are triggered. The result is closer driver involvement through 'positive force' chassis control.

The driving benefits of the XWD system are best appreciated out on the open road. Data from the ABS/ESP sensors - measuring wheel speed, yaw rate and steering angle - is utilized by the Saab XWD control module. Rear drive is instantly applied to balance oversteer and understeer characteristics, improving stability and roadholding.

Driver control is taken a step further on the Turbo X by the eLSD, the first application of an electronically-controlled, rear limited slip differential in this segment of the market. It uses inputs from the rear wheel speed sensors and can transfer up to 40% of torque between the drive shafts, to whichever wheel has more grip. When cornering hard, this yaw damping effect helps the rear of the car more closely follow the direction of the front wheels.

To exploit the full benefits of Saab XWD, the chassis of the Turbo X has been lowered by 10 mm and the springs and dampers stiffened to minimize body movement. To maintain a constant ride height irrespective of load, self-leveling dampers are fitted at the rear.

Stopping power is also increased with larger brake discs fitted: internally ventilated (345 mm diameter x 30 mm) at the front and externally ventilated (292 mm diameter x 20 mm) at the rear. Standard 235/45 R-18 tires ensure excellent mechanical grip for the 18-inch alloy wheels.

The powerhouse at the heart of the Turbo X is a 24-valve, 2.8-liter V6 turbo engine generating 400 Nm of torque between 2,150 and 4,500 rpm and maximum power of 280 hp (206 kW) at 5,500 rpm. The advanced specification includes a lightweight, all-aluminum construction with a 60-degree angle between the cylinder banks for perfect balance, variable inlet valve timing and twin-scroll turbocharging. It is offered with a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
This responsive, high torque powerplant is the perfect partner for Saab XWD. Together, they give the Saab Turbo X sporty, all-wheel-drive performance and handling characteristics that will appeal to all enthusiastic drivers who seek a rewarding experience behind the wheel.

Saab Black Turbo Reborn
Distinctive Jet Black color in homage to first Saab 900 Turbo
Functional sports bodystyling raises aerodynamic efficiency
'Turbo heritage' boost gauge and personalized driver display

The Saab Turbo X visually communicates its focus on driving performance by extending the bold, progressive design themes of the new 9-3 range. Offered only in metallic jet black, with the front grille and all exterior detailing accented in a matte grey titanium-like finish, it represents a contemporary expression of its illustrious black 900 Turbo forebear.

Distinctive styling additions are designed to improve aerodynamic efficiency, as well as emphasize the Turbo X's performance focus. At the front, a deeper lip spoiler and integrated air intake contribute to reduced drag while also increasing air flow to the engine and intercooler.

At the rear, the re-profiled bumper and insert panel lowers the point of air flow separation, further reducing drag and assisting high speed stability. The Sport Sedan features a rear spoiler that extends the line of the trunk deck, reducing high speed lift forces at the rear axle. The standard SportCombi already has a similar spoiler that extends the rear roof line.

The Turbo X is further distinguished by unique, 18-inch alloy wheels (19-inch available as an option outside US/Canada markets) with a grey titanium-like finish that evokes the look of Saab's classic three-spoke design. Twin, rhomboid-shaped tailpipes complete the exterior additions.

Inside, the 'black turbo' theme is continued throughout the cabin. The sports seating, with additional bolstering, is upholstered entirely in black leather. The sporty ambience is further emphasized by a carbon-fiber finish to the main fascia, door inserts, glove box and gear shift console which is unique to the Turbo X.

The driver benefits from improved 'feel' through the addition of a thick-rimmed, soft grip leather steering wheel. Seating comfort can be taken a step further with an optional premium, natural leather interior, which includes perforated bolsters for the front seat squabs and backs.

In recognition of Saab's turbo heritage, the Turbo X boost gauge is a replica of the original 900 Turbo display. Owners will also enjoy a personalized greeting when they get behind the wheel and switch on the ignition. A unique 'Ready For Take-off' message ('All Systems Go' in US/Canada) flashes in the main instrument display. The owner's name, with the edition number of the car, can also be programmed for display by the supplying dealer.

The system uses a series hybrid system supported by a diesel engine operating at peak efficiency to charge a battery pack from from power supply firm A123. GM vice chsirmsn Bob Lutz took time out from flogging training jets to act as MC for the event, which included a light show and modern dance routine straight out of Mumenschanz circa 1977, minus the toilet paper rolls. We'll have a gallery up momentarily. UPDATE: Full press release after the jump.

Dynamic, Versatile and Less Than 40 g CO2/km: Opel Flextreme

Innovative, sporty monocab concept displays ground-breaking E-Flex architecture
Emission-free operating range of 55 km with electricity from mains outlet
Small diesel unit charges lithium-ion battery for total operating range of 715 km

Rüsselsheim/Frankfurt. Opel Flextreme is the name of the concept vehicle that marks a milestone in the development of the electric car: with its completely new, environmentally friendly E-Flex electric propulsion concept most commuters in Europe could travel everyday without producing any CO2 emissions. The car only needs to be charged for a relatively short time through the mains outlet after traveling 55 kilometers. If required however, the Flextreme can travel up to 715 km without stopping to recharge or refuel thanks to its small turbo-diesel engine. According to the European test cycle (ECE R101), this unit's emissions are expected to be less than 40 g CO2/km. With the dynamic IAA monocab coupé concept, Opel also highlights others innovative solutions - including the electric personal transporters under the FlexLoad® load floor.

The Opel Flextreme uses GM's E-Flex architecture and represents the company's strategy to develop vehicles that reduce CO2 emissions and the automobile's dependency on oil,
thereby supporting global diversification of the energy mix. This also includes using the mains electricity network as an energy source. At the concept's heart is an electric motor that takes its power from a large lithium-ion battery. The difference to conventional hybrid propulsion systems is that the E-Flex system's 1.3-liter diesel engine is not connected to the wheels. It is purely on board to produce additional electricity to charge the battery and provide a greater operating range. It always operates in the optimum rpm range and its cylinder pressure-based closed loop technology controls the combustion process, further reducing the vehicle's emissions.

With a fully charged battery, the Flextreme has an operating range of 55 kilometers when running purely on electrical power, and only requires a standard 220 V mains socket to recharge the battery in around three hours. Commuters in Europe have an average commute of less than 50 kilometers, so if they were to charge the car up overnight and during the day, they could drive over 100 km each day without producing any CO2 emissions. "Commutes to major city-centers in Europe will do nothing but grow more challenging in the future, "," says Robert A. Lutz, GM Vice Chairman, Global Product Development, "and we see E-Flex vehicles as an elegant solution for commuters." Bob Lutz sees the Opel Flextreme Concept vehicle as "a natural for the Opel brand in Europe, where it has long been known for technological innovation and strong design."

System already integrated into product development

The E-Flex system is not just a vision of GM - it is already fully integrated into product development. It enables different propulsion systems to be fitted into one uniform chassis with electric propulsion. Fuel cells or bioethanol/diesel engines can also be fitted as secondary propulsion units depending on what energy source is readily available in the driver's area.

The timetable for series production is closely tied to the development of key technologies, such as high-performance lithium-ion batteries. E-Flex Chief Engineer Frank Weber is confident about its further development: "We fully intend to bring this technology to market," says Weber. "we're increasingly confident that our strategic battery partners will be able to deliver a production-ready battery in the near future."

Segways in trunk add extra mobility option

The Flextreme takes the new design language debuted in the GTC Coupé at the Geneva Motor Show several steps further.

The electric scooters provide up to 38 km
(23 miles) of clean mobility.

This Citroen XM Exclusive caught our jet-lagged eye on our way down to the river, where we also caught a glimpse of das boot. The 5-door XM packed a 3.0L 24-Valve DOHC V-6 or 2.5 TD turbo set atop Citroen's signature nitrogen springing - also known as Hydractive suspension. The computer-controlled liquid suspension has a compliance six times greater than suspensions made of schteel, and is driver adjustable. Had things gone better for this descendant of the mighty Citroen DS, a great deal more mechanics would be troubleshooting hydraulics instead of replacing the occasional strut. We're still looking for a good frankfurter. Much to the chagrin of the folks at the General, it would appear shots of the not-even-embargoed Opel E-Flex platformed concept car have made it out onto the internet well before the Frankfurt Auto Show. Ah, you've got to love the internet. Or not. Either way, courtesy of the English kids at CarScoop, here's the hot load of diesel-powered Opel concept hotness, and below the jump we've got what they're telling us about this leaked concept car:

Chevrolet's electric powered Volt Concept has just discovered its European alter ego in the form of Opel's, Frankfurt Show E-Flex Concept. The two concepts share the same basic architecture underneath their differently styled bodies. The only variation is that, whereas the Volt was equipped with a turbocharged, 1.0lt, three-cylinder gasoline engine, the E-Flex takes advantage of Opel's 1.3lt turbo diesel engine. However, the basic principles remain the same as both models are powered by a front-mounted electric motor that runs on electric power until the Lithium-ion batteries are drained out.

Once that batteries are dead, the diesel engine kicks in to "feed" the onboard generator producing electricity while the car is operating. The electricity is then stored in the batteries. As with the Volt, the E-Flex's Lithium-ion batteries can be recharged by plugging into an electrical outlet. We'll have more on the E-Flex as soon as Opel releases all the details.

The paint's barely dry on the new 2008 Laguna and the fancy-schmancy boys at Renault are already hard at work trying to come up with a new Laguna. Apparently the wee little lads who work under Carlos Ghosn have come up with a concept Laguna we'll be seeing live this next week at the Frankfurt Auto Show. Already we're liking what we're seeing in the very Mercury Cougar-esque look of the exterior of the concept car, but as far as the interior, what's that big honkin' knob-like thing in the center of the dash for? Guess we'll find out for sure when we're looking at a press release or when we're there live in Frankfurt and not just looking at some leaked concept car PR shots. It would appear that, according to the following teaser video interview with Chris Bangle, the new BMW X6 whatever-UV is a vehicle not only straddling the line between SUV and Coupe but also between a "concept car" and a "production model." We're fairly certain that's just a marketing ploy to allow the folks from Bayerische Motoren Werke to have their new big-butted Coupe-Wanna-Be-UV show up as a "premiere" at multiple shows. But whatever the reason, be here next week when we unveil the "concept" X6 live from Frankfurt by following our Frankfurt Auto Show tag.

Frankfurt Auto Show Reveal For New Ford Kuga Crossover

Here's the first details and non-sketch shots of the new Ford Kuga crossover — which we already told you we'd be seeing first hand at the Frankfurt Auto Show next week. The people carrier inspired by the Iosis-X Concept revealed last year at the Paris Auto Show will hit the streets officially in early 2008. The Kuga will come in both a FWD and 4WD and although specific powertrain details won't be released until closer to the 2008 launch of the car-UV, it will definitely include the 2.0-liter Duratorg TDCi CRD engine we've already seen at the premium end of the Euro Ford Focus line and in the Ford Mondeo. We'll see it live and in-person at the Frankfurt Show, so hopefully we'll have some more info for you on it then. But even if we don't, fear not — we won't be seeing it stateside anyway.

FRANKFURT PREVIEW FOR NEW FORD KUGA CROSSOVER

COLOGNE, Germany, September 5, 2007 - Ford is releasing the first details of its new Kuga crossover at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, where the car will be previewed ahead of production early in 2008. The Kuga will be previewed alongside the new Ford Verve Concept small car and other exciting new products yet to be revealed on the show's first press day, September 11th.

The All-New Ford Kuga in Brief

* Stylish Ford Kuga crossover will be previewed at Frankfurt Motor Show in near production form ahead of sales launch in early 2008
* Inspired by the iosis X Concept that was revealed at the 2006 Paris Motor Show
* Kuga is the latest showcase for Ford's 'kinetic design'
* Impressive on-road driving dynamics with substantial off-road ability
* Model range features 'intelligent' 4WD and FWD systems
* Powered by Ford's acclaimed 2.0-litre 136 PS Duratorq TDCi diesel engine
* Benefits from strong Ford Focus lineage
* First crossover designed and developed in-house by Ford of Europe
* To be produced at Ford's Saarlouis plant in Germany

Ford of Europe's product portfolio is expanding again - and in another new direction. The new Ford Kuga is an exciting 4WD crossover that combines style with technology and promises impressive on-road dynamics coupled with substantial off-road ability.

The new Ford Kuga will go on sale throughout Europe during the first half of 2008. "When we unveiled the stunning iosis X Concept car at the 2006 Paris Motor Show I promised that in less than two years we would enter this segment with an all-new vehicle developed and built in-house," said John Fleming, President and CEO, Ford of Europe.

"In delivering that promise, the commitment we also gave in Paris two years ago to add new and exciting niche vehicles to a newly energised Ford of Europe portfolio was also kept," Fleming added.

"Kuga offers a rare blend of a wagon and SUV features together with coupé-like sporting qualities," said Stephen Odell, Vice President for Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford of Europe.

"A major element of our strategy to return the Ford of Europe business to sustained profitability is the introduction of exciting new products - like Kuga - that attract new customers to the brand," explained Odell. "The S-MAX proved to us that there is demand for vehicles which offer the customer universal usability for work, leisure and family roles and where "driving pleasure" is also very important."

Unmistakably a Ford
One of the challenges of the Kuga development team was to give the vehicle Ford's acknowledged driving quality while at the same time delivering substantial off-road ability.

For this reason, the Ford Kuga will be available with an intelligent four-wheel-drive system which contributes positively to normal road use and helps give the vehicle an almost sporty dynamic ability. The fact that the Kuga will also be available as a front-wheel-drive only version simply emphasises the crossover concept of the vehicle.
Kuga's powertrain will feature Ford's established and highly fuel efficient 2.0-litre, 136 PS Duratorq TDCi common-rail diesel engine mated to a Durashift 6-speed manual transmission. Further details of the Kuga powertrain will be released closer to launch in early 2008.

Kuga Design - Standing Out
"Our kinetic design form language is very flexible and is giving an exciting look to all our new vehicles," said Martin Smith, Executive Design Director, Ford of Europe. "The iosis X Concept demonstrated how kinetic design could be adapted to the C-sized crossover segment of the market. All the expressive design elements of iosis X are clearly visible in the production vehicle. The new Ford Kuga is a dramatic addition to the Ford portfolio which develops our brand significantly."

Kuga closely follows the proportions and basic dynamic forms of the iosis X. This relationship is enhanced by the paint finish in the same unique 'Ice White' body colour and the bold wheel arches are filled with the same alloy wheels, as seen on iosis X which will be available to customers as a 19-inch option. Strength and athleticism in the design are key attributes of Ford's 'kinetic design' philosophy. Kuga demonstrates this through its dynamic lines, full surfaces and muscular presence. This athletic form language is highlighted with the bold kinetic graphics such as the trapezoidal front grills, rising belt-line and kick-up of the rear window graphic and the dramatic swept back headlamp shapes.

For the production Ford Kuga the coupé-like roof profile of the iosis X Concept has been adjusted to a slightly higher silhouette offering comfortable accommodation for five people.

The luggage compartment is accessed via a split tailgate and this, together with the divided rear lights, ensures the maximum full load width is available for loading and unloading.

Finally, the rear end design of Kuga also incorporates the graphic elements of 'kinetic design' such as the high mounted tail lamps, facetted rear glass and sculptured rear bumper. The rear bumper neatly integrates the tailpipes into the contours of the diffuser.

Kuga Interior - Space and Comfort
The interior of the new Ford Kuga has a spacious feel - and not just because of the large panoramic glass roof fitted to the preview model and available as an option in production.

The clean, ergonomic design of the instrument panel and centre stack converge into a voluminous centre console for maximum accessible storage. These interior components contribute to a comfortable surrounding for the driver and front seat passenger. The high seat and shoulder line position of the doors offers the opportunity for maximum glazed areas to give a light and airy environment for passengers and provides the driver a commanding view of their surroundings.

The materials chosen for Kuga's interior also demonstrate the close links to the iosis X Concept. In Kuga we see once again technical materials, fine leathers and striking orange piping. The Ebony interior is set off by a centre console and details in the door which also feature the piano-white finish from iosis X. All these elements together show how Ford intends to enable Kuga customers in the future to personalise their vehicle.

A hint of the technology coming in Kuga is seen in the new Blaupunkt navigation system which incorporates a 7" colour display to also show images from a rear view camera incorporated into the tailgate. This new feature, to aid reversing manoeuvres, will find its way to the production version of the Kuga.

"We're very excited about Kuga, and believe that its blend of great looks, compact exterior dimensions, superb on-road driving quality, spacious and high quality interior and good off-road ability will allow it to stand out from the crowd," said Fleming. "We can't wait to see it on and off road early next year"

So, he invited all of his "friends" to the Maranello Fiorano circuit to see him lift the sheet unofficially with two more of his friends, F1 drivers Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen — and a female driver who we can't quite make out. Why a female driver? Well, because, as Luca says, "it's quite impossible to open a car without a woman." Who knew? There will be a limited-edition sports car unveiling from the bull-brand at the Frankfurt Auto Show in two weeks. The rumored price of $1 million? We're still going to be operating under the assumption it'll follow our initial tip that the car's going to cost upwards of $1.5 million and be like some kind of love child between a LP640 and a jet fighter. We've also learned that In addition to the news about the super-rare Lambo unveiling, we're also told Winkelmann told the press folks enthusiasts shouldn't expect an LM002 follow-up or four-door anytime soon.
Fiat Grande Punto Abarth "essesse" (Super Sport) Coming To 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show

Fiat's given the Grande Punto Abarth a bit of a conceptual upgrade for the Frankfurt Auto Show with the Grande Punto Abarth Super Sport prototype concept car. They're calling it the "essesse," but with upgrades including a booster kit that almost doubles its power output from the standard Grande Punto Abarth — up to 180 horses — we're calling it pretty frickin' neat. We'll see it in person in Frankfurt next month, but for now you'll have to be content with the two shot gallery below and the full poorly translated press release below the jump.

Grande Punto Abarth "essesse" prototype (Super Sport)

The absolute star of the stand is the Grande Punto Abarth "essesse" (Super Sport) prototype. A jewel of assertiveness and elegance, the car is offered with a booster kit that almost doubles its power output with relation to the basic model (up to almost 180 bhp). The '"essesse"' kit also envisages a number of specific elements that accentuate both the sporty look of the Abarth model (for example adhesives with the 'essesse' logo or a chequered flag) and its dynamic behaviour, with a particular low stance for a more powerful braking system. This is a feature that maintains a brand tradition: for example, the Fiat 500 of 1958 delivered 13 bhp at 4000 rpm and a top speed of 85 km/h, while the Fiat 500 Abarth of the same year, produced 26 bhp at 5000 rpm and a top speed of 118 km/h.

The Grande Punto Abarth and the Grande Punto Abarth with the 'essesse' kit aim to revive the thrill of those cars, offering an opportunity, addressed to the young in particular, of entering the racing world in total safety and at an accessible price.

It's called the i-Blue and it's apparently a hydrogen powered concept crossover that's supposedly also using Hyundai's new third-gen fuel cell tech. Huh...we didn't even know about the first two.
Over The Back Fence: Audi To Reveal RS6 At Frankfurt Auto Show?

We just got the official Audi press release for the Frankfurt Auto Show, which like all the automakers pre-show releases reads like they're teasing us with a tease of the press conference. Meaning that they're cryptic and although in this case we're told Audi's world premiering two new — somethings — they're not telling us what they are. Now, we know one of them's the new Audi A4, which we've already seen revealed on the interwebs. But what's the other one? We're hearing from a source who heard it from a source at Audi of America that it'll be the new Audi RS6 that's rumored to be running with 600 horses. We guess we'll find out in person on Tuesday, September 11th. You on the other hand, will be able to find out by keeping your peepers wide open here.

Nissan Micra Colour + Concept Revealed

With the first one already out the door, Nissan's now released info for their second concept for the Frankfurt Auto Show. It's called the Nissan Micra Colour +. Yes, that's right, this Nissan Design Europe designed concept's got a "+" sign at the end of the name — for what reason, we're just not sure. In addition to the plus-effect, it also looks like it's nothing more than a P-shop animation — maybe that's because of the two-tone Liquid Metal gold paint effect that contrasts with the three coat pearlescent white finish on the car's flanks. Or maybe it was just rendered really cartoon-like. You decide — press release is after the jump.

Micra Colour + Concept show car

The Micra Colour + Concept show car has been designed and conceived at Nissan Design Europe, the company's European design headquarters in London, to showcase the latest colour and paint technology and to highlight the changes that have been made to the entire Micra range.

The biggest visual impact, however, is the paint effect. Micra Colour + Concept has been given a two-tone treatment with a Liquid Metal gold paint effect running over the top of the car and contrasting with the three coat pearlescent white finish on the car's flanks.

The gold finish has an intense depth that makes it appear liquid to the touch. The extreme metallic look is the result of a special-effect pigment added to the paint.

Inside the Colour + Concept theme continues with a high contrast between the upper and lower portions of the interior. Re-upholstered in sumptuous white leather, the seats have accented detailing and stitching. Carpets and lower internal panels are a darker acid yellow to contrast with the pale upper portion of the dashboard.

New Micra

A more mature Micra will be one of the stars of Nissan's stand at the Frankfurt motor show. Micra celebrates its upcoming fifth birthday with subtle changes to its external appearance, interior trim, as well as the addition of new items of user-friendly equipment.

Thanks to clever use of visual features such as subtle chrome touches, darkened headlamp surrounds and blackened 'B' pillars, Micra enters a new phase of its life looking more sophisticated, more modern and more mature.

Inside, new materials and revised colour treatments again provide a more mature and sophisticated ambience. The model line up has been simplified, now with four main grades: Visia, Acenta, Tekna and the premium Active Luxury grade.

The philosophy of providing "Friendly Technology" on the Micra continues. One example is the new double DIN radio/CD player. Incorporating Bluetooth® technology, it enables calls from a compatible mobile phone to be channelled through the audio system. With a control switch neatly incorporated on the steering wheel, calls can be placed and received hands-free.

An additional feature is an auxiliary input jack socket that allows music from personal MP3 players to be heard through the car's stereo system. Another new piece of equipment offering greater safety and convenience in equal measure is a speed limit warning. Activated by a switch on the leather-bound steering wheel, a warning chime sounds when a pre-set speed limit is breached.

"The new Mixim is a compact vehicle that sports a centrally mounted driver's seat with two passenger seats fitted on either side. Targeted towards the youth market, the interior features a computer inspired layout with diamond-shaped cut-outs littering the cabin.

Is This The First Look At The Mitsubishi Concept-cX?

Jeez, the embargo leaks just keep showering upon us like Manna from heaven. We're being told by the Frenchie folks at Caradisiac that the shot over there on the left's the first non-sketch image of Mitsubishi's Frankfurt Auto Show concept, the Concept-cX. If you'll remember, we showed you the sketches of Mitsu's latest concept car late last month and as you can see — if this shot's for real — it looks like they've dropped the new Lancer's front end on to a standard swoop-roof CUV. It's a good thing it's got that Evo X front end as the concept employs the same new 1.8-liter clean turbodiesel engine hooked to Mitsubishi's electronically controlled 4WD system and new Twin Clutch SSG (sport shift transmission) that'll be available in the Evo X. We guess we'll find out for sure when that CD of embargoed shots show up in the mail. Yup, any day now.
The boys at Motor Authority apparently decided the leak of the first shot that went live yesterday of the newly redesigned Audi A4 constituted enough of an embargo break for them to just go live with a whole mess o' photos and a load of details.
