Down on the Street...in Tokyo: The Chevy MW Is The Opel Agila

As we continue to clean out our CompactFlash cards, we've found another piece of metal from the Tokyo streets. Here's the perfect example of a city car produced by the General that they just don't build or sell over in this here part of the globe. This five-door 'merican Revolution is the Chevy MW, and it's a re-badged Vauxhall Agila which is a re-badged Opel Agila which in turn is a re-badged Suzuki Wagon R. As a Suzuki, the MW was first built in Japan, but now in all forms is built at GM's Gliwice, Poland plant. Speaking of the Opelized version, did we mention the second-generation 2008 Opel Agila was unveiled in Frankfurt earlier this year? Oh wait, we've found some shots of the reveal of that one on our many CF cards as well. The newest model of the Agila will be powered by either one of two gas engines — a three cylinder 1.0-liter 65 HP model and a four cylinder 1.2-liter engine rated at 86 HP — and a diesel 1.3-liter four cylinder engine rated at 75 HP. Will the new 2008 Agila have as many re-branded options as the earlier models? You betcha. The General's already planning for the new Agila to be sold by Suzuki as the Splash. Ah, the sweet smell of platform prostitution and brand whoring. Don't you just love the global automotive industry?

FerrariChat forum contributor "JWolf" is very excited because he's getting an all new $1.4 million Lamborghini Reventón — the same big-chin Lambo we broke news on not once, but twice and showed you live pictures of from Frankfurt. He's getting "Number 4" of 20 to be precise. [FerrariChat]

Jalopnik Contributes to a Student's Beer Fund

If new contributor Laura Burstein earns the tag of Jalopnik's "girl," I guess I'll claim the title of resident toddler. I'm Eric Tingwall, and I'm one of Jalopnik's new contributors. As a college student, my life seems eerily similar to that of many two-year-olds: Sleeping, eating and playing with cars. I'm currently earning degrees in mechanical engineering and journalism at Michigan State University. After explaining my choice of majors for the past three years, I'm counting on this to be the one place where people don't cock their heads to side, scrunch their noses and wrinkle their foreheads as they ask, "What do you want to do with that?" "Maximum" Bob Lutz Allays European Fears Of American Product Imperialism

This video of GM product czar Bob Lutz talking with the new media folks at GM Europe about the importance of "global product development" was just released onto YouTube today. In it, Bob Lutz wants Europe not to worry about being part of GM's global product development plan — it won't hurt them. They'll get all sorts of great vehicles like — umm — the Chevy HHR. And then there's the — umm — Cu-marr-o, or however "Maximum" Bob pronounces it. All we know is — isn't it a bit late for the web media folks at GM Europe to still be putting out videos from the Frankfurt Auto Show?

Production BMW X6

Surprise! This spy shot snagged by someone on the hallowed grounds of BMW would seem to indicate the production BMW X6 won't be quite as flashy as the concept version of the X6 shown at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The routine dulling of a concept appears to have been gentle on the X6, with the most noticeable changes being the addition of a B-pillar, larger mirrors and a less glamorous set of wheels. But with the sheet metal unchanged, the production X6 still looks pretty much like the concept at Frankfurt did: bizarre. [The Hollywood Extra]

Manta in Frankfurt, But Where's the Foxtail?

While stalking the nether regions of the Frankfurt Auto Show, Kapitan Bumbeck stumbled across this fine example of a Manta GT/E. This '79 model features a rousing 105 Pferdestarker and a bodykit wide enough to plug the Fulda Gap; we're grooving hard on the period BBS wheels. The question is, would Jimmy McRae drive it? If he wouldn't, we would. We think we'd up the horsepower quotient a bit, though. Turbo Ecotec, anyone?

Frankfurt Auto Show: Mercedes-Benz Rekordwagen C111-IID

Wandering around what we seem to remember as the basement of the Frankfurt Auto Show revealed this Mercedes C111 Rekordwagen. The five-cylinder diesel propelled this C111-IID research vehicle to an average speed of 252 km/hr at the test track at Nardo, Italy. The crew set a total of 16 world records in the process. The first versions of the C111 test platform were powered by a wankel engine, which Mercedes engineers ultimately determined to be too inefficient by design. They opted instead for the precision of a turbodiesel.

Frankfurt Auto Show: The New Chairman; Ssangyong WZ

The Chairman is dead, long live the Chairman. Scratch that, it's the WZ concept, the latest from Ssangyong, Korean by way of the Chinese-mainland. The Mercedes-powered sedan is the replacement for the company's Chairman executive saloon, and it shares a general shape with several Infiniti models and at least one future Hyundai. No word yet on what the new Chairman will be called, but we suspect Wz is at least one vowel short of a nameplate.

Mini Cooper D Clubman

The third in the trilogy of 2008 Cooper Clubman models, the Mini Cooper Clubman D is the oil-burner revealed at the Frankfurt Auto Show. This Clubman's got a four-cylinder, common-rail turbodiesel, with max torque equaling that of the Cooper S's 177 lb-ft, 110 hp at 4,000 rpm and a top speed of 120 mph. But the real story here's the fuel economy, which BMW says will be a sippy-cup-like 57 miles per the UK's larger Imperial gallons. All the hot shots are below.

Mini Cooper S Clubman

Just like its smaller sibling, the Mini Cooper Clubman also comes in S trim. That means more horsepower and a bit of pulse-quickening by way of the company's latest, twin-scroll turbocharged, direct-injected four. In Euro spec, the Mini Cooper S-peedy five-door's sporting the same 175 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque as the Cooper S, with a temporary 192 lb-ft via overboost during balls-out acceleration. That gives the Clubman S-exyBack a zero-to-60 time of 7.6 seconds and a top speed of 139 mph. The tradeoff is in fuel economy, though the S Clubman still manages a company-reported 42.79 miles per the UK's larger Imperial gallons. That's none too shabby for a S-porty little five-door with room in the boot for duffel bags full of human heads, or sundries from Debenhams. Your choice.

Mini Cooper Clubman

The first Mini Cooper Clubman we'll be dropping to you today is the base level. It's getting some inter-corporate sharing under the hood in the form of a four-cylinder VVT engine using BMW's valvetronic technology. That gives the Clubman sans-letter a max output of 120 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and a max torque of 118 lb-ft of torque at 4,250 rpm. That means the floor-level Cooper Clubman is being pegged at a company-reported zero-to-60 time of 9.8 seconds and top speed of 125 mph. The Cooper-just-larger gets an above-average fuel economy spec of 42.79 miles per the UK's larger Imperial gallons. In case you hadn't noticed in the we first showed the press shots, the Clubman's got five, yes, count 'em, five doors. Two in the back, which open like those of a panel wagon. Those in addition to the one on the driver's side and two on the passenger's side in Saturn Ion-like suicide door fashion. To fit all of the extra portalage, BMW's added 9.45 inches in length and 3.15 inches in wheelbase over the Mini Cooper. Thus, you get some actual legroom in the rear seats and some real luggage capacity of 32.6 cubic feet if you fold the seats down.

Frankfurt Auto Show: Wiesmann GT MF 5

We heard it was coming, and then there it was. Wiesmann's new, BMW V10-powered GT MF 5. The five is for 5.0-liter, while the MF is for — well, you know. Wiesmann created the crazed 507-hp creature as a nod to lightweight, overpowered GT cars and roadsters of old. It's also wider than Wiesmann's based GT and a far sight more expensive, at €178,900. It's a purist's GT that didn't forget the bacon-saving ABS. Old, new, borrowed and blue, indeed. [World Car Fans] More »

Frankfurt Auto Show: BMW X6 Concept

The BMW X6 may not be the most significant premiere at the Frankfurt auto show, but it was definitely the one met with the most passive puzzlement we've seen. Most in attendance have already seen the spy shots and early press shots, and so knew what to expect. Still, the consensus among those we asked was that BMW has either got a line on a market we've yet to wrap our heads around, or it's produced an altogether unnecessary car with a dubious future. (Who would have thought American Motors was so ahead of the curve back in 1981.) Who would buy such a thing? What's its value proposition? Where's the utility? Is it just a 5-Series for snowy climes? Frankfurt Auto Show: Brabus "Bullit" V12 C-Class

There are a few key points you need to know about this monster. The bored-out 6.3-liter twin-turbo V12 produces 720 hp and 974 lb-ft of torque. That's 52 torques more than a Veyron. However, the twist is electronically limited to 811 lb-ft. Presumably so as to not blow up the rear end/tranny. Still, this is enough grunt for the uber-sedan to hit 124 mph in less than 10.5 seconds. Top speed? Is 224 mph fast enough? The front brakes feature 12-piston calipers clamping 15" disks. And finally, as far as we can tell, this baddest ever Brabus has absolutely nothing to do with Steve McQueen. Though we have a hunch he'd dig it. Release after jump. More »

Frankfurt Auto Show: Frankfurter at Last!

They rolled out more vendor carts at this non-presse day of the big show. At last we found what we think was a frankfurter. For a mere three euros we scored Paar Würstchen mit senf und Brötchen or what was also listed on the menu as Frankfurter Art. One pair sausages, Frankfurt style - with roll. The mustard was applied mit dispenser. No ketchup was poured.

Frankfurt Auto Show: BMW 507

Hot damn! Uncle Bumbeck found this beauty in the "Old Timers" section of the Hot Dog Show. And I'm simply drooling. I especially dig how only German ragtops with half a century under their low-belts can pull off the wheels matched to body color look. Here's what the sign said:
