Top 12 Post-Apocalyptic Survival Vehicles Of The 2009 Chicago Auto Show

Being a truck show, the staggering number of post-apocalyptic survival vehicles at the Chicago Auto Show make Chicago the place to be for the end of the world. Who knew? Here's the 12 best.

We've done a list of the ten best post-apocalyptic survival vehicles in the past, but after seeing the vehicles at the Chicago Auto Show, we just had to put together this shopping list for vehicles for the end of days.

Especially because of the variety of vehicles available in Chi-town, it's perfect for days like these where it feels the Apocalypse could come in so many shapes and sizes. Will it be a comet collision? Overpowering waves of radiation following a devastating solar flare? Zombies? Financiapocalypse? The Chicago Auto Show has such a wide variety of vehicles available to choose from, it's your one-stop shop for survivability. As such we've put together an incredibly varied list of the top twelve cars perfect for whatever annihilation comes your way.

Transformers 2: Bumblebee II Camaro Gets A Close-Up

Cleaning out our memory cards this morning, we realized we hadn't run anything on the rest of the Chevy Autobots unveiled in Chicago. Hooray for me, right? Without further ado, here's the Bumblebee "II" Camaro.

Although we already showed you how Chevy put together the big Bumblebee statue, we wanted to get a chance to satisfy my robogasmic desires (destroying some of our commentariat's hopes to never see another word written about this movie) with a few shots of the new-and-slightly-more-Mad-Max-ish Bumblebee II Camaro from Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen. Sure, we've already given you the new "Sideswipe" Stingray Corvette Concept, but no love's yet been given to one of our most valued commenters. So, voila, below are our shots of this yellow bowtied Camaro-Transformers tie-in love.

Below that, we've also re-run the "How To Build Bumblebee" shots. In case you missed them.

2010 Ford Transit Connect: A Truly Multipurpose Commercial Vehicle

The 2010 Ford Transit Connect was, thankfully, a vehicle we were excited to see at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show. You don't want to see what they do to people who don't like it.

We are, of course, joking about the awkward appearance of bodies in the back of the new Transit Connect picture above. There's a good explanation for it and, as we all know, the bodies get dumped in Mercury products where no one will ever find them.

The four commercial versions of the vehicles were created as part of the "Connect With Connect" contest, which hooked up the little vans with actual businesses. There's a van for a child-proofing company called Boo Boo Busters. There's a wagon for a maid service in urban areas. Not surprisingly, there's the trying-to-be-hip kayaking company (we kid, it's actually the best looking of the vans).

Our personal favorite has to be the Dummies On The Run van from Ann Arbor, Michigan. The company specializes in CPR and First Aid training and thus has a need for a place to store CPR dummies. We hear those things get expensive so it makes sense to have a secure vehicle to store them in. You wouldn't want this happening:

Ford Active Park Assist System

Ford announced its new Active Park Assist system before the Detroit Auto Show, but here, in one of McCormick Place's many labyrinthine parking garages, is the first time we've tested it.

To be perfectly fair, we've never successfully used an automatic parallel parking system. On a lark once, we tried out the Lexus GS system and never actually got it to parallel park. We got frustrated somewhere in the middle of the process and gave up, parallel parking in manual mode, which means with our hands and eyes.

We strolled down to the McCormick South parking garage, hopped into the awaiting MKS, and after a very brief bout of instruction from Ford chassis engineer Ali Jammoul we were off to the races. To engage the system you press the park button in the center console; as you drive past a line of parked cars the system uses a long range ultrasonic sensor to measure empty spaces and decide if the car will fit. When it has found a suitable space the driver information center dings to let you know it has one. It then directs you to pull forward until it's happy with the car's position, then directs you to stop and shift into reverse. At this point it's an entirely hands-off affair - press the gas and the car turns the steering wheel itself, providing seamless, parking-professional-level steering. The backup sensors pick up the proximity of the car behind and you brake to a stop, shift into drive and the car tucks you into the spot.

Admittedly, the space here is enormous, estimated at vehicle length plus 60%, but Jammoul assured us the car would easily navigate a space only 20% longer than the car. However, the whole process is so simple and effective as to be almost creepy. This is something which will cause a driver's parallel parking skills to atrophy. Even though it's a gadget we don't particularly want in a car, it's still very impressive.

The SandCat is being aimed at the space between the upcoming up-armored Humvee replacement JLTV program and the much, much bigger MRAP. Based on the Ford F550 commercial chassis, the SandCat gets coated in a thick plating of bulletproof armor fully enclosing the passenger compartment. The driveline gets upgraded with a two speed electronically operated transfer case, some very serious bead lock wheels and tires, and air lockers from ARB. This particular demonstrator has a full external fire suppression system, which would come in handy when driving through perhaps a forest fire, or maybe a volcano, which we assume this can also do.

2009 Mazda Miata MX-5: 20 Years Of Beer And Sushi

We just came back from the Mazda Miata MX-5 20th birthday party here at the Chicago Auto Show where they trotted out past concepts, race cars, and most importantly, beer and sushi.

We're inclined to say wonderful things about the Mazda Miata, perhaps even fail to point out the supposed refresh Mazda is touting isn't exactly... er, noticeable. It's a funny thing what beer and sushi will do. In any case, Mazda took a moment to celebrate all things Miata, pointing out it was twenty years ago here in Chicago where the first MX-5 was debuted to the world. Among the neat Miata's Mazda brought along that little blue one is actually the fourteenth to roll off the assembly line.

20 YEARS IN THE MAKING – MAZDA'S LEGENDARY MX-5 MIATA ROADSTER

February 9, 1989 marks a highly significant time in automobile history, and certainly in the life of Mazda. On that day, Mazda unveiled the MX-5 Miata to the world at the Chicago Auto Show. Since then, the MX-5 has become the world's best-selling two-seat sports car, and been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most popular sports car ever built.
Mazda MX-5 offers roadster driving at its best. The MX-5's original concept has been so successful that Mazda has never changed it: affordable to buy and use, lightweight, Jinba Ittai ("rider and horse as one") handling, and classic roadster looks. The Mazda Miata is the jewel of "Kansei Engineering," a deeply held philosophy that every car and truck that Mazda makes should be designed and engineered to provide strong emotional as well as functional satisfaction to its driver. For a unique sports car like Miata, whose sole purpose is pure driving fun, this objective is very important. Thus the Mazda Miata project team scorned "packaging" and "off-the-shelf" componentry per se, and instead began with a pure, bright concept of "America's ideal sports car."
Miata has been heralded as saving the sports car world, has amassed nearly 900,000 global sales, and has won a total of 178 major automotive awards around the world. Two decades later, the MX-5 Miata is still a lightweight, balanced and responsive roadster that delivers the very best wind-in-the-hair driving at an affordable price.
And because Mazda's engineers never lost sight of that "soul of a sports car" positioning for which the entire brand has become known, the MX-5 Miata also is the world's most-raced nameplate.
The MX-5 is currently in its third generation. Below is a summary of each generation:

First Generation:
A 1990 model launched in 1989, the original Miata featured a starting price of $13,800 and first went on sale in May in the United States, and in September in Japan. The first-generation Miata featured a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with 116 horsepower and 100 lb.-ft. of torque. A five-speed manual transmission was standard and City/Hwy fuel economy was 25/30 mpg. Suspension was by independent double wishbone on all four wheels, and braking consisted of four wheel-disc brakes with the front ventilated. Wheels were 14x5.5" steel or 14x6" alloy, both with 185/60 R14 radial tires.
Important to convertibles is the roof operation. The Miata engineering team created a three-fold, easy-to-operate soft top, with one-hand operation, that was lightweight and offered superior weather protection.
The coefficient of drag was 0.38. All together, the Miata weighed a low 2,116 lbs. (curb weight) and could reach 60 mph in less than nine seconds. When it was launched, the car created such excitement among buyers that demand exceeded production and became an instant success.
The first change came in the 1994 model year. Miata was refreshed with a little more power through use of a 128-horsepower 1.8-liter engine. For the 1996 model year, horsepower was increased to 133 and a racing-themed R Package was also introduced with a Torsen® limited-slip rear differential, Bilstein shocks and front and rear spoilers.

Second Generation:
The second generation Miata was a 1999 model year vehicle. This new generation car offered a more powerful engine and new styling, including a new headlight design. For the first time the vehicle featured fixed headlights, which were lighter in mass in the dynamically critical front over hang, as opposed to the first generation's retractable headlights. In addition, the plastic window in the Miata's soft top was replaced with a glass window.
The engine remained at 1.8-liters and received several updates. Power output and torque were improved to 140 horsepower with 119 lb.-ft. torque through enhancements to the intake and exhaust systems, resulting in smooth engine revving from low to high speeds and responsive acceleration with EPA mileage of 24/29 mpg. Features such as a straight intake port, a variable-inertia exhaust system and a dual exhaust manifold were incorporated. Compression ratio was raised from 9.0:1 to 9.5:1 with a raised-crown piston design. The base model could reach 60 mph in 7.9 seconds, with a top speed of 122 mph. Total weight of the second generation Miata was 2,200 pounds.
A special limited edition model was introduced in 1999 to celebrate Miata's 10th anniversary. This model ramped up performance by use of a new six-speed manual transmission, Torsen® limited-slip differential and sport-tuned suspension with Bilstein® shock absorbers. A special Sapphire Blue Mica paint with blue soft top was also offered on the 10th Anniversary model.
In 2000, the face-lifted second-generation MX-5 was launched as a 2001 model. Mazda added more horsepower, variable valve timing, a more rigid chassis and larger brakes. Additionally, 16-inch alloy wheels, a six-speed manual transmission, more aggressive styling and a host of interior improvements were available. The 2001 Miata delivered 142 horsepower and 125 lb.-ft. of torque with 23/28 mpg City/Highway fuel economy, and the compression ratio was increased from 9.5:1 to 10.0:1. With the minimum amount of options, the 2001 model weighed 2,387 pounds.
In 2004, Mazda launched the turbocharged MAZDASPEED MX-5, with a 178 horsepower and 166 lb.-ft. of torque turbocharged and intercooled engine.

Third Generation:
The third generation MX-5 went on sale in late 2005 as a 2006 model year. Every single component on the car was either all new or extensively revised, and the new car looked it. The exterior styling was freshened, with the most noticeable change in the front fenders. Even though curb weight of the third generation Miata grew to over 2,400 pounds, the new car never forgot its roots and it was every bit as fun to drive as the original. And, regardless of the additional curb weight, fuel economy remained at 25/30.
A new 16-valve, 2.0-liter MZR I-4 engine was introduced, producing 170 horsepower and 140 lb.-ft. of torque, coupled to either a five-speed or a six-speed manual transmission or 166-horsepower with the optional six-speed automatic transmission, while the five-speed manual model achieved the same fuel economy as the first 1990 Miata. A limited-slip differential was available with the six-speed option.
The third generation Miata also produced a change in the suspension for the first time. A front wishbone/rear multilink suspension was used beginning with the 2006 MX-5 to increase ride quality and handling. Technologies like traction control and stability control were also added.

In 2007, Mazda offered, for the first time, a new Power Retractable Hard Top (PRHT). Opening and closing cycles last only 12 seconds, making this the fastest power-operated retractable hard top in the U.S., and the only retractable hardtop on the market that doesn't compromise trunk space. Additionally, the PRHT adds only 77 pounds to the total weight of the car.

Significant events over the past 20 years for the Mazda MX-5 Miata include:
It's like, deja vu or something.

The customized trucks shown today were done up by three different truck-centric magazines, Off Road, Truckin', and 4-Wheel & Off-Road. Two of the trucks are spitting images of each other, getting fat tires and lifted suspensions while the third gets slammed and blacked out. It's worth pointing out the 4-Wheel & Off-Road modified truck has already found a way for giant tire to meet fender flair resulting in like-new wrinkled sheetment. Truckin' went all out on theirs, they even pulled the rear seats out and dropped a huge stereo in.

We've spent a lot of time behind the wheel for our 2009 Acura TSX review and were completely underwhelmed by both the speed and handling of the TSX when driven at more than a Miss Daisy pace. This should go a long way to curing a major shortcoming in at least one of those two areas — important for this comfortable sub-luxury car.

2010 Kia Forte: Live In Chicago

This morning, we brought you news of Kia's newest entry in the compact market. This afternoon, Kia revealed its all-new 2010 Kia Forte econobox warrior.

With the 2010 Forte, Kia is continuing its makeover that started with the Kia C'eed and has continued with the Soul. No longer content to put out bare-bones, low budget transportation appliances, Kia is moving upscale (relatively speaking) and taking aim squarely at the head of the class; namely, the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. The interior materials are astoundingly tolerable, the list of standard features is long, and the amount of horsepower is high. Kia also revealed plans to build 50% of their cars in the United States by 2013. Take the badge off and you could have a respectable car.

KIA MOTORS AMERICA INTRODUCES ALL-NEW KIA FORTE

CHICAGO, Feb. 11, 2009 – On the heels of announcing the widely acclaimed, all-new Kia Soul, Kia Motors America (KMA) today introduced the all-new 2010 Kia Forte (pronounced for-tay) compact sedan at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show. Forte blends Kia's exciting new design direction under the tutelage of Peter Schreyer, Kia Motors' chief design officer, with a multitude of standard features. The 2010 Kia Forte will go on sale in North America in late spring or early summer of 2009.

"Kia Motors' product line is rapidly evolving and the Forte compact sedan is another head turner," said B.M. Ahn, group president and CEO, KMA and KMMG. "The Forte is an aggressively stylish blend of comfort and practicality – and with a host of standard features it provides the great quality and value that consumers have come to expect from Kia vehicles."

Style in Motion

Sporting stylish and aggressive design cues, the new Forte firmly establishes itself as a strong contender in its segment. With a bold look set apart by crisp lines, swept-back headlamps and a sleek profile, Forte exudes a confident stance that conveys motion both while cruising the highway and parked in the driveway. Available in three trim levels (LX, EX and SX), Forte offers a sleek, sophisticated design. The sportier SX trim offers a more athletic profile with 17-inch alloy wheels paired with P215/45R17-sized premium tires and a rear spoiler.

Smooth and Comfortable Ride

With a wheelbase of 104.3 inches, an overall length of 178.3 inches, an overall width of 69.9 inches and overall height of 57.5 inches, Forte offers one of the roomiest interiors in its class with seating for up to five passengers. The Kia-engineered body achieves high torsional stiffness giving Forte better handling, smoother ride quality and greater refinement than its competitors, with a specially tuned suspension adjusted perfectly for responsive handling on curvy roads. Additional refinements are fitted throughout Forte to help ensure a comfortable ride with good noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) reduction qualities.

Built on a front-wheel-drive unibody frame, Forte utilizes an independent front suspension with MacPherson struts and a stabilizer bar and a torsion beam rear suspension with struts and coil springs. This combination helps provide the optimal balance of handling and comfort. An engine-speed-sensitive, power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system adds the finishing touch for precise handling by providing the most advantageous amount of assist for varying road conditions. In keeping with the sporty essence of the SX model line, a sport-tuned suspension gives the chassis a firmer feel and responsiveness resulting in a sportier and more spirited ride. The SX model also features larger front brakes for improved stopping capabilities.

Attractive and Practical Interior

Forte boasts a class-leading¹ 96.8 cubic feet of passenger volume, while driver and passengers have an impressive 40.0 inches of headroom and 43.3 inches of legroom in the front seats and 37.8 inches of headroom and 35.0 inches of legroom in the rear seats. Forte's trunk also offers an impressive 14.7 cubic feet of cargo space, one of the largest in its class, perfect for luggage for weekend getaways.

Capitalizing on its spacious interior, Forte pampers its riders with a host of interior features, starting with comfortable, nicely appointed full cloth seats. A six-way adjustable driver's seat, tilt steering column, rear defroster and dual 12-volt power outlets in the center console are driver- and passenger-conscious luxuries standard on every vehicle.

EX and SX models offer a number of additional standard luxurious touches such as: power windows and door locks; remote keyless entry; air conditioning; map lamps; steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls; dual front and rear cup holders; and floor mats. Forte EX and SX models also include standard cruise control with an optional sunroof and leather-trimmed seats. Also standard on SX models is a telescoping steering column as well as sport cloth seats adorned with red stitching, further enhancing its energetic persona.

Peppy Performance

Forte LX and EX are powered by a 2.0-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine, producing 156 horsepower and 144 pound-feet of torque, that features Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) and multi-port electronic fuel injection, both of which provide for greater performance and fuel economy. The SX features an upgraded 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine, also with CVVT, which delivers 173 horsepower – more than the most powerful versions of the Toyota Corolla¹ or even the 2010 Mazda3.

Two transmission options are offered for the 2010 Forte: a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission (LX and EX models). The SX model features a standard six-speed manual transmission and an optional five-speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic®.

The optional Fuel Economy Package, available with the 2.0-liter powerplant, will include the five-speed automatic transmission, Motor Drive Power Steering and low-rolling resistance tires with aero enhancements. These improvements result in class-leading combined fuel economy of 36 mpg (highway).

Music that Moves

Forte comes with a standard four speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system outfitted with SIRIUS Satellite Radio capabilities with three months complimentary service². Standard on all models is an auxiliary audio input jack and USB port for connecting personal MP3 players. Standard Bluetooth® connectivity enables hands-free operation for compatible cell phones. For true audiophiles, the EX and SX packages also add a standard six speaker surround audio system and steering wheel controls.

Standard Kia Motors Safety

Forte offers a class-leading level of standard safety equipment, with features such as active front headrests, advanced two-stage airbags, front seat-mounted and side curtain airbags, four-wheel disc brakes with an antilock brake system (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC) and traction control (TCS), and a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

Industry-Leading Warranty

Like all Kia models, Forte is covered by a comprehensive warranty program, which offers unprecedented consumer protection. Included in this program are a 10-year or 100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, a five-year or 60,000-mile limited basic warranty, and a five-year or 100,000-mile anti-perforation warranty. A five-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance plan is also part of the comprehensive coverage program.

2009 Product Line

Kia Motors America offers a dynamic and diverse product line of 11 vehicles to meet the needs of all lifestyles. The 2009 vehicle line features the functional Rondo CUV and award-winning Sedona minivan along with a wide variety of popular passenger cars, including the refined Amanti full-size sedan, purposeful Optima midsize sedan, versatile and compact Spectra and Spectra5, and sporty yet fuel-efficient Rio and Rio5 subcompacts. The vehicle line also features the affordably luxurious Borrego, rugged Sorento and value-packed Sportage SUVs. The 2010 Soul will further complement the lineup when it arrives in dealerships this spring.

2010 Ford Taurus SHO: Live And With A Ridiculous Torque Curve

Now it's debuted here in Chicago. Also, the power chart has debuted. Consider our fragile little minds blown.

The new SHO gets a 365 HP, 350 lb-ft twin turbocharged V6, all-wheel-drive, a slick, rev-matching, gear-holding paddle-shifted automatic transmission and very subtle visual modifications. In fact, you can read all the details in our earlier Taurus SHO post.

What we didn't have at the time was the above horsepower and torque curves for the EcoBoost in the Taurus SHO. The phrase "a flat torque curve" is very often tossed around willy-nilly, but the graph Ford has provided us is so ridiculous it practically defies reason.

The R-Spec brings a lot to the table by bringing less, targeted at the track day and tuner crowd who will be modifying their cars to start, so no Bluetooth stuff, no automatic headlights, cruise control, chrome trim, steering wheel buttons, and other nonessential doo-dads. It does keep all the good stuff though — four pot Brembos, Torsen limited slip differential, six speed manual and Bridgestone Potenza's wrapped around 19 inch gunmetal gray wheels. It also gets a more aggressive tune on the traction control system, 7% stiffer front springs and 15% stiffer rears, retuned dampers and thicker anti-roll bars.

Basically this is the Genesis Coupe we would be optioning were we in the market for one.
Hyundai Debuts A High Performance Blank Canvas For Tuners: Genesis Coupe R-Spec

CHICAGO, Feb. 11, 2009 – When the colors of your new turbocharged rear-wheel-drive sport coupe are named after international racing circuits, you'd better have the performance and confidence to back it up. Now, Hyundai is upping the ante by announcing an R-Spec version of the all-new 2010 Genesis Coupe, designed to appeal to true enthusiasts who want a low starting price and the ability to tune their car to their own specifications. R-Spec will be available as a mid-2010 model year introduction.
R-Spec provides genuine track-readiness in an affordable model. The R-Spec adds core performance equipment to the most affordable 2.0T model, such as: Track-tuned suspension, 19-inch gunmetal-finish alloy wheels with performance summer tires, Brembo® braking system, Torsen limited-slip differential, and R-Spec badging. To further reduce cost and weight, it also eliminates some non-essential convenience equipment such as: Bluetooth®, automatic headlights, cruise control, trip computer, chrome interior accents and steering wheel audio controls. The Genesis Coupe R-Spec will be priced at $23,750 and $3,000 less than the 2.0T Track model, leaving tuners with extra cash for their own choice of aftermarket performance upgrades. Appropriately, the R-Spec will be available in three performance oriented exteriors colors: Karussell White, Bathurst Black and Tsukuba Red.

R-Spec equipment includes:
2.0-liter low-pressure turbocharged intercooled four-cylinder engine with dual continuously variable valve timing delivering 210-hp, an estimated 30 mpg EPA highway rating and a top speed of 137 mph
6-speed close-ratio manual transmission
Electronic Stability Control with Traction control, ABS, Electronic Brake-Force Distribution and Brake Assist
19-inch gunmetal-finish alloy wheels with staggered-width high-performance summer-compound Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires (225/40YR19 front, 245/40YR19 rear)
Brembo® braking system with 13.4-inch ventilated front rotors, 42mm four-piston fixed front calipers (red), 13.0-inch ventilated rear rotors, 32mm+28mm four-piston fixed rear calipers (red)
Track-tuned suspension (higher-rate coil springs, higher-control shock absorbers, 25mm front stabilizer bar, 22mm rear stabilizer bar, front strut brace)
Torsen-type limited-slip differential
R-Spec badging
Quick-ratio hydraulic steering (2.7 turns lock-to-lock)
Tire Pressure Monitoring System
Front, side, side air curtain air bags
Active front head restraints
Driver's lumbar support
Air conditioning
Remote keyless entry system
Leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob
Power windows (one-touch up and down), door locks and mirrors
AM/FM/XM/MP3/CD audio system with six speakers
iPod/USB/Aux jack connectivity
Projector beam headlamps
Lightweight temporary spare with aluminum wheel (T135/80D18)
Note: Automatic transmission not available with R-Spec

Hyundai Genesis Coupe Price To Start At $22,000

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe base model 2.0 turbo with a manual starts at just $22,000 the company just announced here at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show. The 300 HP V6 model starts at just $25,000.

A pleasingly low $22k buys you the 210 HP turbocharged inline four Genesis Coupe and the 300 HP 3.8 liter V6 equipped with a proper six speed transmission is only $25,000. Pinch us. Of course, prices for both go up from there, but we're talking bona fide bargain here. The last time horsepower was this cheap was back in the days of the LS1-powered Chevy Camaro.

If you want to break the bank, you can go for a fully-loaded, V6-equipped track model with the shiftronic 6-speed transmission for $31,000... but why would you when you could have the manual for less? Full details in the press release below .
It just seemed weird, considering GM's level of involvement in Transformers, for them not to have a Corvette in the movie. Now, here it is. It's not the next Corvette, but it is what we wish the next Corvette would look like — it's the Stingray Corvette Concept, and it'll play the character of Sideswipe. Frankly, it was gorgeous when we first saw it at GM's design center and it's even more gorgeous now.

We'll have more on the rest of the Autobots revealed here in Chicago shortly, but we kinda figured you'd want to see this silver gleaming slab of beautiful first.

By the way, I just touched it. Now I want one.

CHICAGO – Visitors to the Chevrolet display at this year's Chicago Auto Show (Friday through Feb. 22) will be treated to an out-of-this-world vehicle display – the automotive stars from the upcoming DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures release, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen."

Five Chevrolet-based characters – including four all-new characters – are featured in the new film set to open in the United States on June 26. All of them are at the Chevrolet display. The four new movie characters include:

SIDESWIPE – a stylized Corvette vision concept vehicle
SKIDS and MUDFLAP – twin AUTOBOTS® based on Chevy's Beat (a concept that will go into production as the Chevy Spark in 2011) and Trax concepts
JOLT – an AUTOBOT-based on Chevy's upcoming Volt extended-range electric vehicle
BUMBLEBEE™, the heroic AUTOBOT based on Chevrolet's Camaro concept from the first "Transformers" movie, returns with a high-performance attitude. Joining the vehicles on stage will be BUMBLEBEE in his AUTOBOT form, standing almost 17 feet (5.2 meters) tall and 13 feet (4 meters) wide.

"Chevrolet is thrilled to again be part of one of the most anticipated movies in years," said Ed Peper, GM North America vice president, Chevrolet. "‘Transformers' gives us a great opportunity to connect with young people on their terms, with a dynamic, environmentally friendly image. The new characters represent the change going on in Chevy showrooms. From the exciting Camaro, the 21st century sports car, to the game-changing Volt, there's more than meets the eye at Chevrolet today."

Directed by Michael Bay, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" sees the AUTOBOTS confront a new threat from DECEPTICONS® bent on avenging their earlier defeat on Earth. The new AUTOBOT characters in their current Chevy-based form square off against new, tougher foes determined to rule the universe.

"‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' goes way beyond the first film in terms of robot action and excitement," said LeeAnne Stables, executive vice president of worldwide marketing partnerships at Paramount Pictures, the distributor of the film. "The new AUTOBOTS add to the storytelling, and these Chevy vehicles went with our filmmakers to locations all around the world. GM has again provided incredible support to the production team working on the movie."

Along with the Camaro that's reprising its role in the new film, the other Chevy models to be seen on the big screen are new to movie-goers.

SIDESWIPE takes the form of a sleek, vision concept dreamed up by the Corvette designers at GM. The design is influenced by the original Stingray race car, introduced in 1959, but also draws on Corvette heritage cues from other generations. It brings them together in a futuristic shape that seems to be equal parts racecar and space ship.

"SIDESWIPE represents an exercise in exploration for the Corvette," said Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Global Design. "By giving my creative team the freedom to design no-holds-barred vision concepts, it helps them push boundaries and look at projects from different perspectives."

The Beat and Trax-based characters, SKIDS and MUDFLAP, remain faithful to their concept designs introduced at the 2007 New York Auto Show – although each wears new paint and other exterior accessories. And while they may be small cars, when they turn into fighting AUTOBOTS®, they pack a big punch.

The other new AUTOBOT, JOLT, appears in the production form of Chevy's 2011 Volt extended-range electric vehicle. With the capability of up to 40 miles (64 km) of pure electric propulsion, plus hundreds of more miles with the assistance from its Voltec powertrain system, the real-life Volt will change driving in America.

Of course, the AUTOBOT team isn't complete without BUMBLEBEE, the yellow Camaro based on the new, 2010 production model. Sporting new wheels and SS-model performance cues, BUMBLEBEE is more stylish and powerful than ever – and enthusiasts will be able to drive their own new Camaro when it goes on sale this spring.
2010 Kia Forte Is The New Spectra

The 2010 Kia Forte, a replacement for the dull Spectra, is one the first salvos in Kia's battle to enhance its image. Perhaps the 173 HP, six-speed manual-equipped SX will find its target.

Similar to the already debuted Korean 2009 Kia Forte, the new Forte was supposed to be the new Spectra. We're guessing the company decided to move away from the name, which didn't have much of a positive reputation in this country.

Available in LX, SX or EX trim, the Forte has a leg up on its predecessor in both the style and features departments. Both the LX and EX versions get a 2.0-liter DOHC fourbanger good for 156 HP and 144 lb-ft of torque featuring CVVT. The sporty SX gets a 2.4-liter inline-four delivering 173 HP, which they claim is more powerful than the most powerful versions of the Toyota Corolla and 2010 Mazda3. Ahem, 2010 Mazdaspeed3. Boasting aside, it's a lot of power for a small Kia. Mated to a six-speed manual transmission, the Kia Spectra has some sleeper potential.

The list of options is fairly high for a small car, including standard Bluetooth and an audio input jack and USB port for iPod connectivity. Move up to the EX or SX packages and a six-speed system with steering wheel controls is also available. Full details in the press release below.

The Genesis Coupe R-Spec begins with the 210 HP turbocharged inline four and then and chops the weight down. Convenience gadgets like Bluetooth, automatic headlights, cruise control, trip computer, chrome interior accents and steering wheel audio controls have been chopped in the interest of weight saving and cost reduction. Those cuts are augmented with performance goodies like bigger Brembo brakes, a retuned suspension, a quicker steering ratio and 19 inch wheels wear what we understand to be far more aggressive tires. Bottom line price $23,750. We'll be bringing you all the details from the live reveal only hours away here at the Chicago Auto Show.
2010 Ford Taurus SHO: The Sleeper Awakens!

You saw it here first. Now it's official, the Ford Taurus SHO is back. The new Super High Output's equipped with a twin-turbocharged 365 HP Ecoboost V6 to turn this $37,995 sedan up to eleven.

Sometimes people deserve to have their loyalty rewarded, the 2010 Taurus SHO is one of those rewards. It has been a hard few years for Ford fan-boys, testing their belief in the Taurus nameplate without a Super High Output brand. Two successively uninspiring models led to the retirement of the Taurus name, and a third wore the name after an uncomfortable resurrection. The newly-redesigned Taurus is a product wearing the badge in much the same way as the original, a jaw-dropping entry at a critical moment for the company.

The new SHO boasts the highest level of tune so far announced for the Ecoboost V6 — 365 HP and 350 lb-ft of torque, going above and beyond the previously rated 355 HP in the 2010 Ford Flex and 2010 Lincoln MKS. The more important part of those power figures is where it comes in at, with peak torque starting from 1500 RPM and topping out at 3500 RPM. Shoot, that's almost in diesel territory. Ford isn't being bashful about this new SHO either, boldly claiming the Taurus SHO will outperform the BMW 550i while returning 25 MPG on the highway and coming in at a reasonable $37,995 price. Those are certainly fightin' words.

And what of that product? To those in the know, the new SHO's lived in the realm of a wink and a knowing nod, as it's a sleeper through and through. There are dangerously few details to give away the potential of the car. Outside, the only indications of something out of the ordinary are the small SHO badges on the C-pillars, the SHO/Ecoboost badge mounted low on the trunklid, dual exhaust with chrome tips, a tasteful spoiler on the deck which hides the backup camera (if so optioned), and a unique satin finish on the grille. That's it. Oh wait, there is one more thing only lifetime members of the SHO club will recognize, a SHO-only color called Atlantis Green Metallic, a modern interpretation of a shade the 1991 SHO wore, Deep Emerald Green. Very cool.

The Taurus SHO continues its subtlety inside and gets all the goodies of the normal Taurus, but packs on various shades of suede seating surfaces (the brown seen here being hideous compared to the black we saw), aluminum trimmed pedals, piano black and aluminum trim, a perforated leather wrapped steering wheel and leather door treatment (the interior looks much better in black than brown, trust us) and it's all rounded out with small SHO badges on the dash and floor mats.

On the equipment front, aside from the 3.5 liter twin-turbocharged Ecoboost V6, the Taurus SHO comes standard with all-wheel-drive, a paddle-shifted six speed automatic transmission specially tuned to rev-match and hold the gears of your choosing. The standard Taurus SHO also gets a retuned suspension, designed for carving corners over sucking up potholes and standard nineteen inch wheels with optional twenties.

But the SHO order sheet holds a secret. Check option box 12S and Ford takes the SHO to the next level with the SHO Performance Package. The performance package includes upgraded brake pads, a more aggressive calibration on the electric steering rack, more aggressive tune on the stability control system and faster 3.16 final drive ratio over the standard 2.77, and as a cherry on top, Goodyear Eagle F1 tires on painted twenty inch wheels. Yes, the SHO has a track-pack, that's not us being glib, those were unofficial words the Ford folks were throwing around.
In an off-hand comment at the Ford Chicago Auto Show backgrounder in Dearborn where we first saw the car, Group Vice President of Marketing and Communications Jim Farley said, "You ever see that movie Spinal Tap? Well, some of our cars are like that. The SHO here, it goes to eleven." We think the quote sums up the 2010 Ford Taurus SHO quite nicely. To say we can't wait to get behind the wheel with a helmet on and put Ford's claims through the crucible of the track would be an incredible understatement, but for now, we'll just have to make do with the press release below, and the live reveal from the 2009 Chicago Auto Show.

Taurus SHO Returns with 365HP Ecoboost V-6, PLUS ALL-Wheel Drive, Paddle-Shift SIX-Speed Gearbox

The Taurus SHO returns as the sporty version of Ford's new flagship introducing a new generation of premium performance and fuel economy with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost™ V-6. This engine delivers V-8 levels of power – with an estimated 365 horsepower – without compromising its V-6 fuel economy

The 2010 Taurus SHO features an enhanced SelectShift® six-speed automatic transmission with control paddles mounted on the steering wheel, in combination with a sophisticated torque sensing all-wheel drive system, a sportier SHO interior, subtle exterior design cues and myriad technologies and features offered on Taurus

Taurus SHO will be available this summer, starting at $37,995, including destination fees

Chicago, Feb. 11, 2009 – One of America's favorite "sleeper" performance cars returns to the Ford lineup, powered by a Super High Output (SHO) EcoBoost twin turbocharged engine.
The Taurus SHO joins Ford's growing lineup of performance vehicles for the 2010 model year, building on the legacy of the original, which earned a spot on the Car and Driver 10Best list four years running.

"The new Taurus SHO delivers on the authentic sleeper sedan formula but adds all-new luxury-appointments, convenience features and technologies to an unsurpassed balance of power and fuel economy," said Mark Fields, Ford's president of The Americas. "This new sport derivative answers enthusiasts' calls for a premium Ford flagship sedan with even more attitude."

Introduced in 1989, Taurus SHO was conceived as a discreet performance-oriented sports sedan, ideally suited to the automotive enthusiast needing the room and capability of a four-door full-size car. Produced through 1999, more than 100,000 were sold.

The original Taurus SHO generated a loyal following of owners and enthusiasts, with an active club more than 1,000 members strong, an online forum with more than 10,000 registered users and a Web site (bringbackthesho.com) specifically devoted to convincing Ford to resurrect the SHO. The 2010 Taurus product development team spent significant time listening to SHO enthusiasts.

EcoBoost™ Twin-Turbocharged Power
The foundation of the new 2010 Taurus SHO is a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 engine. This advanced powerplant generates an estimated 365 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 350 ft.-lbs. of torque at 3,500 rpm, resulting in significantly improved power, torque and fuel economy compared with larger, normally aspirated engines. This also is Ford's most powerful EcoBoost engine.

A key feature of this EcoBoost engine is gasoline direct injection. The direct injection of fuel into the cylinder during the intake stroke, as opposed to port-style injection to an externally mounted intake, produces a well-mixed air-fuel charge. Fuel vaporization during the intake stroke cools the incoming air, improving volumetric efficiency and lowers the likelihood of knock.

The results are improved throttle response, reduced cold start emissions characteristics and improved fuel economy. The cooled charge enables an increased compression ratio, improving efficiency at partial load, while the higher compression ratio allows for better volumetric efficiency under full load engine behavior. Customers will experience normally aspirated V-8 power, without compromising V-6 fuel economy.

The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 also uses twin turbochargers, as opposed to a single unit. The reduced size of each turbocharger results in reduced internal inertia, allowing this advanced engine to avoid the "turbo lag" often prevalent in earlier-generation turbocharged applications. From the driver's seat, the rewarding result is linear power delivery across a broad torque band from 1,500 through 5,500 rpm. Peak torque building quickly off idle ensures responsive acceleration from a standing start.

SelectShift with paddle controls and All-Wheel Drive
The new Taurus SHO driveline combines a high-capacity six-speed 6F55 SelectShift transmission with a sophisticated torque-sensing All-Wheel Drive System. These components work in harmony to deliver ample traction when putting EcoBoost power on the road. The six-speed transmission offers a wide array of gears to enable spirited acceleration, yet comfortable high-speed cruising, through a 2.77 to 1 final drive ratio.

SelectShift provides conventional automatic operation or a manual shift mode that gives the driver complete control over gear selection. For performance-minded drivers, paddle controls allow "match-rev" downshifts and will hold manually selected gears for precise control. Intuitively operated, a squeeze on either paddle will deliver an economical upshift under acceleration, while a gentle push forward brings a smooth downshift, synchronizing the engine and transmission speeds for responsive and positive engagement.

The Taurus SHO driveline is contemporized with the incorporation of a sophisticated All-Wheel Drive System that engages automatically and unobtrusively. The unit contains an advanced array of internal electromechanical clutches to efficiently distribute torque to the wheels with optimum traction. Standard all-wheel drive allows the Taurus SHO to efficiently deliver its high performance to the pavement under a wide variety of conditions.

"Taurus SHO suspension and steering have been sport-tuned to provide discriminating drivers with precise control, confident handling, communicative feedback and a compliant ride," said Pete Reyes, Taurus chief engineer.

Taurus SHO features an advanced electronic power-assisted steering (EPAS) system, providing responsive road feel and enhanced on-center balance while offering the additional benefit of increased fuel economy. SHO also features a sport-tuned suspension with unique shock absorbers, springs, stabilizer bars and strut mount bushings specifically developed and harmonized to deliver the highest level of Ford DNA road holding, cornering agility and steering responsiveness available in a Blue Oval full-size sedan.

Taurus SHO takes full advantage of the multi-link SR1 rear suspension design. Named for the 1:1 shock absorber ratio, this configuration provides an inherently stable baseline for the SHO development team to fine tune for enhanced driver control and agility. In addition, the SR1 rear suspension geometry provides increased travel, while enabling the use of 19- and 20-inch wheels and tires.

For the discriminating automotive enthusiast, Taurus SHO offers an available SHO Performance Package consisting of upgraded brake pads, recalibrated EPAS for even more responsiveness, a "Sport Mode" setting for the standard AdvanceTrac® Electronic Stability Control and a shorter 3.16 to 1 final drive ratio for faster acceleration. Summer-compound 20-inch Goodyear Eagle F1 performance tires on premium painted wheels also are included.

SHO Specific Subtlety
A key element of the authentic SHO formula is the subtlety of its unique exterior design cues.Features include sporty premium painted wheels, wrapped in standard low-profile 19-inch Goodyear Eagle or optional 20-inch Michelin high-performance tires, a decklid-mounted spoiler and twin chrome exhaust tips. SHO also features a uniquely finished interpretation of the Ford signature three-bar grille with SHO-specific parking lamp bezels.

"Taurus SHO was always a stealth high-performance car," said Earl Lucas, exterior design manager. "The new SHO builds on the expressive design of the 2010 Taurus, adding subtle cues that set it apart."

The 2010 SHO is available in a wide range of new Taurus colors including Atlantis Green Metallic, a unique SHO color inspired by the iconic Deep Emerald Green hue appearing in 1991.

The new Taurus SHO interior encourages performance driving. Leather-trimmed seats with Miko Suede inserts, made from recycled post-consumer yarns from plastic soft drink bottles, are comfortable and luxurious. A perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel puts the driver in smooth touch with the road. Front seats are 10-way power adjustable. SHO accelerator and brake pedals are trimmed in aluminum. The console, instrument and door panels feature SHO-specific authentic aluminum appliqués. SHO branding appears on the unique floor mats, and on the passenger side of the instrument panel.

Taurus SHO: Performance and Convenience
The 2010 Taurus SHO offers an impressive array of standard convenience features as well as optional features and content. Standard Taurus SHO amenities include:

Intelligent Access with Push Button Start, a new Taurus feature allowing drivers to enter the car and start the engine without using a conventional key. Drivers simply carry the fob as they approach the vehicle, touch the SecuriCode™ keyless entry keypad, open the door and enter, apply pressure on brake pedal and push a button to start the engine.

MyKey allows enthusiasts to activate a restricted driving mode, persistent Belt-Minder® safety belt reminder, audio system volume limits, an earlier low-fuel warning, and consistently-engaged AdvanceTrac® stability control. The top vehicle speed can be limited to 80 mph, and speed chimes can be programmed to engage at 45, 55 or 65 mph further protecting their investment.

Easy Fuel™ Capless Fuel Filler System, a unique feature that eliminates the need for a traditional fuel cap. Easy Fuel is a hassle-free solution that provides a consistent self-seal after every refueling.

Ford SYNC® is the fully integrated, in-vehicle voice-activated communications and entertainment system standard on Taurus SHO. The system combines 911 Assist, Vehicle Health Report and GPS-based features including business search and call completion. SYNC connects to MP3 players, iPods, memory sticks and PDAs. The latest version of SYNC in the Taurus SHO adds Traffic, Directions and Information, providing turn-by-turn route guidance and the capability to access and personalize content.

Ambient Lighting allows the Taurus SHO driver to program interior lighting from a choice of five soothing colors to suit any character or preference.

The 2010 Taurus SHO comes standard with the full array of active and passive safety equipment and features offered across the Taurus range.

Available options on the 2010 Taurus SHO include:

Reverse Camera System, a unique SHO option, activates when reverse gear is selected providing the driver with additional rear visibility, projecting on the windscreen mounted rearview mirror.

Adaptive Cruise Control, which allows the driver to set the Taurus SHO cruising speed while using radar technology to monitor traffic traveling up to 600 feet ahead, automatically adjusting speed to help maintain a preset distance between vehicles. Adaptive Cruise Control comes with Collision Warning with Brake Support providing visible and audible warnings when slower traffic is detected ahead. Brake support is activated if the driver does not respond to provided warnings, and pre-charges the brake system to prepare the vehicle for stopping.

Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™) with Cross Traffic Alert consists of two multiple beam radar modules, one each per rear quarter panel. When an adjacent vehicle enters the defined blind spot zone, and indicator alert provides driver warning in the corresponding sideview mirror. Cross Traffic Alert uses existing BLIS radar modules to sense oncoming traffic while the Taurus SHO is slowly backed from a parking space. When cross traffic appears within three car widths, the system provides a visible message on the instrument panel in combination with a sideview mirror warning and an audible signal.

Multi-Contour Seats with Active Motion™ can be specified in conjunction with heated and cooled first-row positions in the new Taurus SHO. Multi-Contour functionality provides subtle but continuous massage to help prevent back pain and fatigue and is ideally suited to meet the needs of long-distance drivers.

Voice-Activated Navigation System includes a 10 GB music juke box hard drive and a single CD/DVD player. When combined with the optional rear camera system, rearview projection appears on the centerstack-mounted navigation screen.

Sony Audio System offers 12 speakers, a digital amplifier, 390 Watts of continuous power (RMS), 115 dB of maximum bass sound pressure level and Dolby® Pro Logic® II surround technology.

The 2010 Taurus SHO will be built at Ford's Chicago (Ill.) assembly plant and will be available in dealerships this summer, starting at a base price of $37,995, including destination.

Travis Pastrana WRX STI Celebrates Subaru Championship

Because nothing says "Winner" quite like yellow paint and a loud stereo, Subaru has collaborated with Vermont SportsCar to build a custom STI to commemorate Travis Pastrana's Rally America Championship.

While we're huge fans of both Travis Pastrana and the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI, the two have, in this case, combined to create something incredibly horrible. To be fair, we doubt the rally star actually had much involvement with the vehicle.

The full list of specs reads like a 16-year-old's wet dream. In addition the P**sy Magnet Yellow paint complete with Tonka tire tracks, there's a carbon fiber hood, rear wing and other aero aids. Inside the custom blue interior, there's a ridiculous Kicker stereo sure to highlight the Impreza's thin body panels and passenger seat-mounted, custom yellow Xbox 360 so bad drivers can hone their mad skillz without risking other people's lives.

Under the hood there's a host of unnecessary modifications. The STI is already an extremely fast car that needs much in the way of driver confidence and little in the way of increased mechanical ability.

In fact, the real point of this car seems to be to highlight the range of official tuning parts available through Subaru dealers. We knew we preferred the plain old 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX for a reason.

The full press release follows:

Subaru worked with Pastrana to create a brilliant yellow "199" liveried WRX STI to commemorate his third consecutive Rally America National Championship. Pastrana is scheduled to appear at the Chicago Auto Show to sign autographs in the Subaru booth February 14th and 15th.

Winner of nine X Games Gold Medals, two for X Games Rally competition, Pastrana's street ride had to be as formidable on the road as his racing WRX STI is on the rally circuit. The Travis Pastrana WRX STI is not only a visual stunner, but also amps up performance capability of the stock production Impreza WRX STI. Vermont SportsCar, technical partner for Subaru and builder of the team's rally cars, customized the WRX STI using an array of Subaru Performance Tuning (SPT) and STI parts, along with unique custom pieces. The SPT and STI engine, exhaust, chassis and interior parts showcased on the Travis Pastrana WRX STI are available for any WRX STI through authorized Subaru dealers.

Travis Pastrana: Rally Star

Pastrana was already a motocross champion and X Games gold medal winner when he launched a rally career in 2003. He began driving for the Subaru-backed Vermont SportsCar rally team in 2004.

On August 5, 2006 Pastrana won the gold medal in the first rally car competition at the X Games and was signed to lead the new Subaru Rally Team USA in 2006. Pastrana secured his third consecutive Rally America National Championship driver's title with a win at the 2008 Rally Colorado round of the championship.

Pastrana WRX STI: Back-Road and Highway Star

Commissioned by Subaru, Vermont SportsCar started the Travis Pastrana WRX STI with a stock 305-horsepower 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX STI. Pastrana's new WRX STI delivers even sharper handling response than the stock model. An SPT front strut tower brace and SPT lower chassis brace help to further tighten handling response. The stock wheels and tires are replaced by BF Goodrich G-Force Super Sport A/S 275/35 ZR18 tires on Work Evolution XD-9 18 x 9-in. wheels in custom satin black. Red STI Brembo brake calipers with white "STI" decals are visible behind the spokes.

The rally-bred WRX STI exterior design lights up with custom yellow paint and graphics. The carbon fiber hood and carbon fiber rear wing are unique to the Pastrana's WRX STI. As on the stock production WRX STI, the functional hood scoop streams outside air to an intercooler. The Sport Mesh Grille is available for all WRX STI owners. Likewise, the STI front chin spoiler and the exhaust finishers are available through Subaru dealers. A set of PIAA 2100 HID driving lights and rally-spec mud flaps underscore the aggressive rally-bred design of the 5-door WRX STI.

Engine Compartment

Under its custom carbon fiber hood, this WRX STI is equipped with a number of modifications including a performance-tuned ECU and custom Down Pipe to unleash a bit more power from the DOHC 2.5-liter intercooled turbo Boxer engine. A turbo boost gauge facilitates tuning. The SPT billet aluminum battery hold-down and billet aluminum oil cap are rendered in the trademark SPT blue color.

Interior

The custom blue Alcantara interior upholstery, the trademark of the original U.S.-spec WRX STIs, is accented with Pastrana's traditional yellow piping and "199 Pastrana" embroidered logos in yellow thread to match vehicle exterior. Likewise, custom yellow stitching is used to accent the steering wheel, shifter boot and parking brake handle boot. An STI short-throw shifter provides an even more direct connection to the 6-speed manual gearbox. Carbon fiber patterned interior trim highlights the dash, doors and console. A rally map light and co-driver foot rest bring a bit of Pastrana's Subaru Rally Team USA car into his new street WRX STI.

During a rally, Pastrana listens to a continuous stream of navigation commands from his co-driver. In his new custom WRX STI, he can listen to anything he wants — loudly. The audio system is based on an Eclipse AVN 6620 navigation/DVD/CD/MP3 stereo head unit and uses Kicker amplifiers and speakers, including:

* Kicker ZX700.5 4x75 watt and 1x400 watt stereo amplifier
* Kicker RS65.2 6.5-in. component speakers, front
* Kicker RS56.2 5.25/6-in. component speakers, rear
* Kicker Solo-Baric L5 10-in. subwoofer in a custom subwoofer/amplifier enclosure

An Xbox 360 is also mounted under the front passenger seat, rounding a package that is as entertaining as its owner. Pastrana and his co-driver can play the Colin McRae DIRT video game using custom yellow controllers.

2010 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150: Hog Lovers Rejoice!

The 2010 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 is the latest in Ford's line of co-branded trucks combining the popularity of the F-150 and the style of Harley-Davidson. But what kind of substance lies beneath the style?

If nothing else, the 2010 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 certainly captures the Harley attitude; It's dark, it's brooding, and it wears its chrome proudly. Like the motorcycles it channels and despite all the festooning of the Harley badges, it doesn't offer any more oomph in the go-fast department than the regular version. It gets the same 320 HP 5.4-liter you'll find in the engine bay of the regular 2009 Ford F-150 mated to a six speed automatic powering the rear wheels or an optional Harley-unique driveline, which can be operated in 4x2 mode, AWD or 4x4 high. The suspension, on the other hand, is completely retuned for a sportier ride with more aggressive springs and shocks as well as a thicker anti-roll bar. The truck takes advantage of the sportier tune with some custom 22 inch wheels shod in 275 series, low profile, high performance Pirelli Scorpion Zeros.

Upgraded hardware is nice and all, but let's be honest, the crew-cab-only Harley F-150 is all about styling, and if you're into the bike-makers design mantra, this new truck doesn't disappoint. The front end is completely redesigned, sporting a Harley specific six bar billet-style chrome grille with painted surround, unique upper and lower front bumper treatment, and color matched headlight clusters. Down the side of the truck there are two things you'll notice and one you might not. The readily apparent details are the enormous bits of Harley badging at the front and rear fenders along with the splash of color at the rocker panel. What you might not notice is the automatic fold-down running board swiped from the F-150 Platinum edition, when enabled it comes in handy if you're on the short side and then tucks up neatly under the truck when the doors close. The truck gets slathered in two color options, Tuxedo Black, and a Lava Red (pictured) which is so dark when not under studio lighting you can barely tell it's a red.

The interior is where the truck gets serious about being Harley-centric. The heated and cooled front seats wear aniline leather patterned after a motorcycle jacket, with decorative shoulder snaps at the top, flexible elbow sections on the sides bolsters, real Harley zippers to close the map pocket in the back, and a red perforated leather seating surface. They also get some fancy, hand-made fired glass cloisonne badges stuck right between your shoulder blades. Despite having two exterior shades, there's only one interior color — Lava Red. On the inside the color takes on a different meaning than outside, it's an anodized finish which shifts color a bit between red and a gray-green. It gets slathered on the center stack, shifter console, and the gauge cluster. The interior is finished off with a big Harley-Davidson plaque on the armrest bearing the truck's number in the build series.

We're not going to say the package is something we'd check the option box for, considering the price tag on this puppy will probably be pretty lofty, but for guys into this kind of stuff, it's a darn stylish truck. It might be easier to understand the draw of the Harley F-150 if we understood the draw of Harley-Davidson's to begin with, but to each his own. Watch for the unveil of the 2010 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 later this week, live from the floor of the 2009 Chicago Auto Show, but until then check out the complete details below.

New 2010 Ford Harley-Davidson™ F-150: tough truck with cool attitude; new details, inside and out

2010 Ford Harley-Davidson™ F-150 edition features a new, bold front fascia and grille along with a premium interior and model-specific ornamentation

Sport suspension and standard 22-inch polished, forged aluminum wheels and tires – the largest available on F-Series – complement refined ride of the new Harley-Davidson F-150 edition

CHICAGO, Feb. 10, 2009 – The 2010 Ford Harley-Davidson™ F-150 delivers a new standard of "custom cool," combining the smooth handling and legendary durability of America's best-selling truck with the authentic styling of Harley-Davidson, the industry leader in motorcycles.

This marks the 14th Harley-Davidson edition of an F-Series truck and latest in a line of Ford Harley-Davidson F-Series models dating back to 2000, which aim to appeal to customers who appreciate quality and unique details only this kind of collaboration can bring.

"Our successful co-branding, unmatched in the industry, offers customers true specialized truck luxury," said Derrick Kuzak, Ford's group vice president of Global Product Development. "Just like with our other associations, we've linked with an industry leader to offer the best
of the best."

The successful collaboration between these two icons of the open road has produced eight F-150 models, as well as six Super Duty F-250, F-350, and in 2009, the first Harley-Davidson F-450 edition truck. The 2010 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 is the first Harley-Davidson edition vehicle built off the award-winning new 2009 Ford F-150.

"This truck builds on the legacy of toughness that's been the hallmark of the Ford F-Series brand," said Matt O'Leary, chief engineer. "Now we're giving customers more of everything they love with the best F-150 and the boldest Harley-Davidson F-150 ever – featuring a fully differentiated design, all-wheel-drive capability, 22-inch wheels and a knock-out interior."

The exterior of the 2010 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 offers a bold front fascia and six-bar shaped billet style grille and boasts specialized forged aluminum and Harley-Davidson® chrome badging. The truck will have a lowered appearance because of a fully integrated deployable running board.

Also standard are 22-inch low-profile performance tires – the largest in the F-Series lineup – and Euroflange forged wheels with a polished and painted center wheel cap. The paint selection is classic Harley-Davidson – Tuxedo Black and the first Ford application of Lava, a deep maroon with three-color metal flake.

The interior is customized to appeal to the truck buyer who appreciates the attention to detail for which both Ford and Harley-Davidson are renowned.

"There's a real tie-in between the truck's interior and exterior designs," said Patrick Schiavone, Design director. "It's very much like how some customized Harley-Davidson motorcycles have a prominent theme that runs through them. That's how we tie it in with custom bikes."

Also impressive are the seats and console lid, which features hand-made cloisonné badges; the console has a limited-edition serialization plate.

"These handmade badges continue our theme of premium Harley-Davidson offerings," said Schiavone. "Probably the only place that most people have seen hand-made cloisonné is on premium Harley-Davidson motorcycles. It's really high craftsmanship, and people will recognize it as another connection between the two brands."

Linkage is apparent even in the smallest details, such as adornments on the seats.

"The theme of the seat was designed to resemble a Harley® biker jacket," Schiavone said. "We even used authentic materials you'd find on Harley-Davidson MotorClothes® brand apparel."

The seat backs feature ribbed leather treatments, engraved Harley-Davidson button snaps and even zippered map pockets featuring zippers from Harley jackets.

It is important to the Ford Design team that the truck remain genuine to enthusiasts of Harley-Davidson, customers who traditionally are as loyal to their motorcycles as F-150 owners are to their trucks.

That's why the team meets regularly with Harley-Davidson designers and travels to motorcycle events throughout the year – including Daytona Bike Week, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and Harley-Davidson dealer meetings – to talk to current and potential customers. The team wants to be sure that when Harley-Davidson owners or enthusiasts need a truck, this is the truck they choose.

"We talk to everyone we can; we find out what the customer values," O'Leary said. "We look at what they like, what they want, and what they wish they had, and we go from there."

"No one understands their customers better than Harley-Davidson and Ford," said Joanne Bischmann, vice president – Licensing, Harley-Davidson Motor Company. "We're proud to share the spirit of Harley-Davidson authenticity in a unique interpretation of America's favorite truck, the F-Series."

About the F-150
On the new F-150, there's a wealth of content complementing its unique appearance. The 2010 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 is equipped with a 5.4-liter three-valve engine, which is rated up to 320 horsepower and 390 ft.-lbs. of torque and mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with a sport-tuned exhaust and a top speed of 115 mph.

The truck is available with 4x2 or an optional all-wheel drive, which features settings of 4x2, AWD and 4x4 high, unique to the Harley-Davidson edition on the F-150 platform. All 2010 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 models will be SuperCrews.

The F-150 is new inside and out. The Ford truck team adopted a holistic, 360-degree approach to revamping the vehicle – from its segment-first features to the tough new exterior, a more spacious, flexible and refined interior and an unparalleled choice of cab styles and trim levels.

The improvements are just as dramatic beneath the sheet metal. They include a new high-strength, lighter-weight chassis that delivers even more horsepower, unsurpassed fuel economy and class-leading towing and payload capacity.

The new design has garnered an impressive array of awards:

You totally should've seen how much you drank last night. Do you remember anything after passing out?

You beastmanned those brews, homie. I can't believe you were drunk enough to wear those matte black 18-inch wheels and that even blacker paint to the party. You don't remember that? Ha, that's not the end of it. You stopped by the shop and picked up those drop springs, a rear sway bar, TRD exhaust and some gnarly badges.

You dropped some serious coin, man. After it's all added up, you're about $2,300 poorer. That's a lot of busing tables. It's not like you didn't know this was coming - this is like the fifth time you've had a blowout like this. Your dancing up on the bar was so popular you've got 2,000 of your friends doing the exact same thing. Righteous.

2010 Ford Transit Connect: Commercial Simplicity At $21,475

The 2010 Ford Transit Connect; It's compact, utilitarian, can be outfitted with awesome goodies, boasts 135 cubic feet of cargo space, gets one proven power train and starts at $21,475. What's not to love?

We knew the 2010 Ford Transit Connect was coming, and to be perfectly honest, it's refreshing to see a no-nonsense, utilitarian product bringing some much needed honesty into the market. The Transit Connect is entering a US market completely barren of compact commercial vehicles but it should also be considered a global refresh so just what has Ford done with the 2010 Transit Connect?

The new Transit Connect gets an updated face based on Ford's European Kinetic Design language, which is shared to some extent with the new 2010 Ford Taurus. The trapezoidal upper and lower grilles meet in the middle and the upper is flanked by a new set of headlight clusters, it also gets a newly profiled hood to tie everything together up front. The rest of the body is largely unchanged, aside from reshaped rearview mirrors and the inclusion of backup radar sensors on the rear bumper.
If you're hoping to see a long options list in the power train department from the outset, you're going to be disappointed. To keep things simple, Ford is offering a well tested and reliable Duratec 2.0 liter four cylinder with 138 HP running with a 4 speed automatic which is projected to return 20 MPG city and 24 MPG highway. Ford has said it would consider a manual transmission, should there be sufficient demand, but from the start it's auto only. If you're willing to wait a bit, the Transit Connect will be available in the second half of 2010 with two all-electric versions, outfitted by EV experts Smith Electric Vehicles. Complete details on the Transit Connect BEV can be read here.

From an engineering perspective, the Transit Connect has been designed to meet the durability requirements set down for US full-sized trucks, so it would be fair to call it "Built Ford Tough," an odd notion for a funny-shaped, car-based minivan. Considering the punishment these little buggers are likely to see at the hands of commercial users and little kids alike, it's probably a good thing they're designed to take it.

Inside, the new Transit Connect gets a dash which has been rethought without losing its simple and sturdy feel. The center stack goes from vertical to angled away from the driver, making sight lines considerably better than the outgoing model, the vents have been swapped for a simpler round style popular these days. The base model gets an AM-FM radio, upgradeable to include a CD player, but this being a commercial vehicle, there's an optional Ford Work Solutions in-dash computer system which integrates very nicely into the dash, taking advantages of a reshaped dash-top storage slot that accommodates the system keyboard. Also optional with the Work Solutions pack is a pair of Tool Link sensors which make keeping track of your stuff as easy as pasting on RFID tags, whether for a hammer or a stroller.

And that gets us to an interesting point, the Transit Connect is currently aimed primarily at the commercial market, but it can be outfitted with a split, forward-folding bench seat in the back, more installed glass, painted fenders, chrome grille, and fog lamps which make it, at least in our eyes, an intriguing choice for folks interested in substance over style. With 135 cubic feet of cargo room, a rugged rubberized load floor with a 1600 lb payload capacity, and bombproof interior components, we're wondering if this thing turns out to be the best mixed-use vehicle ever offered on US shores. We'll be bringing you the unveil of the 2010 Ford Transit Connect live from the floor of the 2009 Chicago Auto Show, but until then check out the complete details below.

Low operating and ownership costs, a fuel-efficient 2.0-liter engine, 135 cubic feet of cargo space, a 1,600 pound payload capacity, available Ford Work Solutions technology and various cargo management systems make Transit Connect a smart solution

Transit Connect, a strong global Ford product, goes on sale in the U.S. this summer, starting at $21,475, including destination

DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 9, 2009 – Ford is tapping its global portfolio of products to meet the unique needs of American small business owners with the 2010 Transit Connect, a spacious new fuel-efficient alternative to larger commercial vehicles that's ideal for navigating U.S. cities.

"Transit Connect is a tangible success of our ‘One Ford' strategy to harness the best of our global products and offer new choices and solutions to customers in other parts of the world," said Mark Fields, Ford's president of The Americas. "With 40 percent market share, Ford is the reigning Commercial Truck leader in the United States, and we're looking for Transit Connect to further grow our leadership and allow even more customers to experience the ‘Built Ford Tough' difference."
The 2010 Ford Transit Connect will be unveiled at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show. It arrives with a global reputation for durability and toughness dating back to its 2003 launch, when an expert jury of European commercial vehicle journalists named it International Van of the Year.

Ford Transit Connect is built on a dedicated front-wheel drive commercial vehicle platform to meet and exceed the needs of small business owners and entrepreneurs. To prepare the Transit Connect for the unique needs of small businesses in the United States, the powertrain was upgraded to include a proven Duratec 2.0-liter dual-overhead cam (DOHC) four-cylinder engine and a four-speed automatic overdrive transaxle. Several design details, including the grille and interior touches, have been updated to lend the vehicle a fresh, new look for its American debut.

"This workhorse is like nothing available today in the American market," said Derrick Kuzak, Ford's group vice president of Global Product Development. "We're offering small business owners a real choice to meet their needs, instead of asking them to pull seats out of minivans or compromise on one or more of their needs. Transit Connect is good news for small business owners nationwide."

Transit Connect: It's Global
More than 600,000 Ford Transit Connects have been sold since 2003, to customers in 58 countries and on four continents. To fulfill the unmet needs of small business owners and entrepreneurs in the United States, Ford's Global Product Development team was able to quickly adapt the Transit Connect for the American market, validate its durability and tailor the cargo space for the unique yet diverse needs of small business proprietors.

Transit Connect: It's Capable
"Transit Connect was developed to bring small business owners a new vehicle choice, offering significantly improved fuel economy, generous and accessible cargo space with the agility and maneuverability to deliver the goods in tight quarters," said Rob Stevens, chief engineer.

Transit Connect's capability begins with capacity.
With 135 cubic feet of Transit Connect cargo volume, no other vehicle in the American market can deliver this combination of capacity and fuel economy.
Split rear cargo doors open at a standard 180 degrees, or an optionally available 255 degrees. When open, these doors provide access to 52.1 inches of available load height.
Lift-over height is less than two feet, when the Transit Connect is unloaded
Once inside, the cargo area opens up to 59.1 inches of floor to ceiling load height
The load width is 47.8 inches, between the wheel arches
Load length is a generous 72.6 inches or more than six feet of cargo floor space. Dual sliding rear side doors provide wide access to the generous cargo space as well

Transit Connect has more than double the cargo-carrying space of the Chevrolet HHR Panel, making it suitable for a broader range of commercial use applications.

The Transit Connect offers commercial users a cargo payload of 1,600 pounds. This capacity means that the Transit Connect can carry a larger payload than the full size Dodge Ram 1500 standard-cab short-box pickup truck.

"Transit Connect can swallow far more cargo than people might think," added Stevens.

The Transit Connect's capability story goes beyond capacity. Its size and nimble driving dynamics provide agility for urban routes. Power-assisted rack and pinion steering allows a 39-foot curb-to-curb turning circle assures that Transit Connect is maneuverable when delivering the goods for entrepreneurs in tight quarters.

The Transit Connect is expected to deliver at least 20 city and 24 highway mpg, pending EPA fuel economy certification.

Transit Connect: It's Adaptable
Ford Transit Connect was conceived, developed and engineered to meet the needs of small business proprietors all over the world.
Once it arrives in the United States from the plant in Kocaeli, Turkey, Transit Connect can be outfitted for specific needs across a diverse range of users.

Bulkheads, racks, bins and other upfits can be mixed, matched and configured to suit many specific commercial applications and needs. Transit Connect is offered with a wide range of upfitted cargo management options, similar to the enduring, market-leading Ford E-Series commercial vehicles.

Small business owners have tremendous choice, with this unrivaled commercial application.
Transit Connect is available as a cargo van with no windows in the sliding side doors combined with rear cargo door privacy glass
A panel van version is offered with no side or rear cargo area windows
Transit Connect also can be configured with side and rear door privacy glass for maximum driver visibility
Plus, a wagon version of Transit Connect is available with a folding second-row bench seat, in either two- or three-passenger configurations. The wagon is ideally suited to the specialized needs of a small business owner that uses Transit Connect for carrying cargo for business and passengers or family during off-hours

Ford Transit Connect can be further adapted to individual business needs with the inclusion of Ford Work Solutions. The "solutions" behind this system allow customers to:

Run a business from inside the Transit Connect – right from the job site. An in-dash computer provides Internet access, productivity software and optional printing capabilities
Track tools. Tool Link™ gives the ability to organize, scan and track tools, inventory and other cargo items
Track the fleet. Crew Chief™ is a tailored telematics service to monitor and manage small or large fleets

The Ford Work Solutions in-dash computer allows small business owners to run their enterprises from inside the Transit Connect. Applications include downloading customer or product information, remotely accessing an office work station computer, sending and receiving text messages, navigating job or delivery locations with the Garmin navigation function and connecting with customers via hands-free phone functionality.

With a bright touch screen, for easy use and visibility, the in-dash computer runs the Windows CE 6.0 operating system. Word processing, spreadsheet, calculator and calendar applications are all included. With applicable subscriptions, the system can provide users with Internet access, remote document access and Garmin Online services such as traffic, weather and fuel prices.

The in-dash computer enables the availability of Tool Link, by DeWalt™. Using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags that adhere to the tools or objects themselves, Tool Link allows the Transit Connect Cargo to be scanned for the appropriate tools and inventory items, prior to leaving for the jobsite or route.

Tool Link helps manage valuable tools and ensures that specific items are on-board and available for use. Tool Link helps to keep all RFID-tagged objects on board, so at the end of the day, these items are secure and available for work on the next job.

Crew Chief™ is a tool for fleet managers to track vehicles, staff and Transit Connect diagnostics.
This system, not available in conjunction with the in-dash computer, provides a fleet manager with constant access to vehicle location information, the ability to track vehicle performance, automatic notification of vehicle maintenance needs and the ability to let drivers drive ─ not fill out written vehicle logs.

Crew Chief allows online access to vehicle location, speed, idle time, fuel usage and more than 30 diagnostic measures. Functions and reporting can be tailored to meet the specific needs of fleets large or small. Crew Chief has "geo-fencing" capability, allowing a fleet manager to set geographic or time of use boundaries.
Transit Connect is adaptable to multiple drivers, too. It features a six-way manually adjustable reclining driver's seat with an armrest, and a four-way adjustable reclining passenger's seat. The steering wheel tilts and telescopes to fit drivers of diverse sizes.

Transit Connect: It's Durable
Ford Transit Connect has a global track record of durability. It's a purpose-built commercial vehicle, built on a dedicated commercial vehicle platform in an exclusively commercial vehicle production facility. Transit Connect is designed, engineered and manufactured by Ford of Europe to beat tough, light commercial vehicle durability standards.

The Transit Connect is powered by a well-proven Duratec 2.0-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine, featuring four valves per cylinder and an aluminum block and head. Sequential multiport electronic fuel injection provides precise fuel metering for smooth and economical performance. This engine, delivering an estimated 136 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 128 ft.-lbs. of torque at 4,750 rpm, has proven American market durability.

This engine is mated to a four-speed automatic transaxle with overdrive for additional fuel economy. A final-drive ratio of 4.20 to 1 is designed to give Transit Connect pulling power for the long haul. Fifteen inch steel wheels with P205/65R-15 black sidewall tires put the Transit Connect in contact with the road.

The Transit Connect was developed at the outset to be durable, with a boron steel front crossmember, a high-strength steel reinforced body shell, twin- side cross members and side-impact protection. Several areas of the body structure are double-skinned for additional strength, increasing resistance to the minor scrapes inherent to urban delivery situations. Swage lines along the lower side door panels add rigidity and visual character.

As a nimble, purpose-built commercial vehicle, Transit Connect can be a smart choice for the small business proprietor currently over-taxing the capabilities of an aging minivan with the passenger seats removed.

Transit Connect: It's Professional
While providing an ideal palette for identification and logo of a business on its body side, Transit Connect tells the world that its owner or operator has made a smart, savvy and efficient choice.

Transit Connect keeps passengers and cargo safe and secure, too. Front and side air bags help keep driver and first-row passenger safe. Four-wheel anti-lock brakes and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) are standard, as well. A locking exterior hood release helps keep things secure up front. Lock-in-Latch shielded door locks help Transit Connect resist break-in.

Transit Connect helps small business professionals keep their cool with standard air-conditioning and an AM/FM Stereo receiver with two speakers. A similar audio unit is offered, adding a single disc CD player and an audio input jack.

A standard center console includes two large cupholders and twin storage bins for receipts, invoices and toll coins. The Transit Connect roofline allows an overhead storage shelf, holding the small items an entrepreneur needs to keep top-of-mind.

Transit Connect: It's Accessible
With models starting at $21,475, including destination, Transit Connect is accessible to a wide range of American small business owners.

Plus, low operating costs, excellent fuel economy and 7,500 mile service intervals make economic sense, for businesses on tight budgets. A comfortable ride, an automatic transaxle and small exterior dimensions make Transit Connect accessible to lots of drivers that might be intimidated by the prospect of a full-size commercial vehicle.

"Transit Connect will be a useful small business tool," said Chief Engineer Stevens. "It drives like a car, works like a van and is engineered to be as tough as a truck."

IRVINE, Calif. - Mazda's timeless roadster, the MX-5 Miata, races into the 2009 Chicago Auto Show with a refreshed exterior, enhanced performance and improved fuel efficiency. Mazda will showcase the 2009 MX-5 along with a historical collection of early model-year Miatas and the all-new 2010 MAZDA3 four-door sedan and five-door models.

Launched in 1989 as a 1990 model, the MX-5 Miata was conceived as a small two-seat roadster that was spirited, fun-to-drive and unlike anything else available at the time. Since then, competitors have come and gone, but none have lasted. Twenty years later, and with more than 800,000 models sold so far around the world, the MX-5 Miata is the world's best-selling two-seat roadster.

"The MX-5 Miata has been true to Mazda's Zoom-Zoom philosophy since rolling off the assembly line 20 years ago," said Tim Barnes, director, Product Development. "Long before Zoom-Zoom became one of the most recognizable slogans around, Mazda designed Miata to epitomize the 'emotion of motion' concept on which Zoom-Zoom is based, and our worldwide sales are a real testament to Miata's DNA and spirit."

The 2009 MX-5 produces 167-hp from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Perfect balance has always been a hallmark of the car, and the new model's suspension revisions make it an even better mountain road dance partner. In addition, updates to front and rear fascias, interior enhancements, package changes and new interior and exterior colors keep MX-5 as fresh today as it was 20 years ago.

On display alongside the MX-5 will be the all-new MAZDA3. Aimed at the young at heart, who love to drive and are technologically aware, the MAZDA3 remains the most engaging car in its class. Both the four-door and five-door versions feature top-class environmental and safety performance, and offer evolved sporty driving dynamics, eye-catching styling elements and a high-quality interior.

The all-new MAZDA3 is available with key features typically not seen in its class including:

* Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio
* Adaptive Front-lighting System and Bi-Xenon headlights with auto leveling
* Advanced keyless entry system
* Push-button start

One of every three Mazdas sold worldwide is a MAZDA3. That success drove the production of the two-millionth MAZDA3 in October 2008. The all-new 2010 MAZDA3 will go on sale in North America in the first quarter of 2009.

The balance of Mazda's full 2009 lineup also will be on display at the show, including CX-9, CX-7, MAZDA5, RX-8, Tribute and the all-new 2009 MAZDA6 sports sedan. The Chicago Auto Show is open to the public February 13-22, 2009, at the McCormick Place, Chicago.

Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., Mazda North American Operations oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States, Canada and Mexico through nearly 900 dealers. Operations in Canada are managed by Mazda Canada, Inc., located in Ontario, Canada, and in Mexico by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City.
