Porsche Reveals Cool Boxster, Also Shows Other Cars

We went to the Porsche event with high hopes of amazing unveils for the never before seen Porsche Boxster RS60 Spyder, Porsche RS Spyder, Porsche Cayenne GTS and Porsche 911 GT2. Imagine our disappointment when we got there and realized we've seen them all before, unlike the Porsche press release had implied. About the most exciting part of the whole event was the Boxster ice sculpture, with Porschemisu. They did manage to redeem themselves by encouraging us to "Have a little taste of Porsche" with the little birthday cakes - it's Porsches 50th anniversary this year. We didn't taste the cakes, because we don't know what Porsche tastes like, though we assume concentrated Bruce tastes like oil, aluminum, und schteel. More »

Porsche Coming To New York, Bringing Three "World Premiere" Vehicles

Porsche just dropped a presser on us which has us scratching our heads. Any time we read words like "Porsche" and "First" and "Shown" in a press release, we expect the things contained therein to be, you know, Porsches being shown for the first time. In this case, that's maybe only partially true. In breathless verbiage, we're told all about the amazing new Porsche Cayenne GTS, Porsche 911 GT2, Porsche Boxster RS60 Spyder and the racing Porsche RS Spyder. Problem is we've already seen the Porsche Cayenne GTS and the Porsche 911 GT2 in the flesh, the Porsche Boxster RS60 Spyder has been both on the web and boring for nigh on three and a half months. And it would be a shock if the Porsche RS Spyder which has already won more races than we care to count wasn't pretty well known. So at the end of the day, we're really confused on exactly what it is we're supposed to be excited about here. But — the press release in all of it's breathlessness is below the jump. More »

SpeedART Reveals Cayenne Based Titan BTR 550

If a 500bhp Cayenne Turbo isn't a good starting point for a tuner car, we don't know what is. Adding 50bhp and 96lb/ft of torque (for a total of 612lb/ft) the Titan BTR 550 should live up to it's monstrous name. In addition to the engine mods, the Titan benefits from a sports exhaust that's switchable between loud and not-so-load, air suspension and an aerodynamically efficient carbon fiber body kit. It's also available with 22" wheels up to 11.5" wide. No word on what sort of premium the Titan will carry over a stock $93,700 Cayenne Turbo, expect that info at the Geneva Motor Show. The mid-level porker SUV will be revealed officially later today, slotting between the Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo as part of Porsche's ever-widening niche-fulfillment strategy (see what I did there?). HAMANN Cyclone Porsche Cayenne: Nothing Says Speed Like Snakeskin

We'd say this new Porsche Cayenne was to die for, but then it turns out there are people willing to die for a Porsche Cayenne. Well, that and it's kind of hideous. Something about this HAMANN Cyclone body kit just doesn't quite work. Maybe it's that sort of M5-esque front bumper. Maybe it's the unnecessarily large black rims. Porsche Cayenne GTS for US to Cost $69,300

US info regarding Porsche's new Cayenne variant hit earlier today. If you'll recall, the Cayenne GTS, debuting at the Frankfurt auto show next week, gets a more powerful 4.8-liter V8 and the 911's Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system. It'll cost nearly seventy large, but that's around $23,000 less than a Cayenne Turbo. The power's less, but the PASM-gasm might be worth the $11,000 premium over a Cayenne S. Some slick market slicing, Herr Porsche. More »

Porsche Cayenne GTS to Premiere in Frankfurt

It may not have the same badging as we'd considered, but the Porsche Cayenne GTS is nonetheless coming to Frankfurt, sporting a few tweaks to position it between the Cayenne S and the Turbo S. It's the first of Porsche's speedy buses to get the same active suspension system as the 911, which subsequently lowers the GTS by 24 mm. It also gets a shorter final-drive ratio than typical (4.1:1 vs. 3.55:1) and more power. That is, 405 hp at 6,500 rpm. A special body treatment and new color choices (GTS Red and Nordic Gold Metallic). No word on a US release, but in the UK it'll start at £54,350 — solidly in early-career footballer range. More »

Over the Back Fence: Porsche Cayenne GTS Coming to Frankfurt?

Our Dutch boyz at Autoblog.nl send up an Automobilwoche report that Porsche is planning to reveal a special new Cayenne for the Frankfurt show next week. It'll be dubbed GTS, a designation last seen on the mid-1990s Porsche 928. The Cayenne GTS, the report says, won't overshadow the Turbo S. Rather, it builds on the Cayenne S, adding a body kit, 21" wheels, special red paint and other accouterments. With Lamborghini issuing another flat denial of its SUV plans, could the recent Lambo test mule be a disguised GTS? Only Herr Winkelmann knows for sure. [Autoblog.nl]

TechArt Porsche Cayenne: Coming to Frankfurt

One reason we dig going to the Frankfurt auto show is to cruise the bahnhofstrasse district, so we can point out window mannequins whose mouths appear to be pronouncing the letter "O." Another is for the massive "tuner floor" where Europe's largest tweaker shops gather their latest over-the-top wares. One such shop is Germany's Porsche-fiddling TechArt. They'll be showing off their latest 911 Turbo kit, and rolling out their take on the newest Cayenne. Such is the hot number shown here. Mainly a cosmetics exersize, the TechArt Magnum Cayenne comes with fender flares and an aero kit the company says are made of Pur-rim (l'chaim) plastic. Customary stainless steel exhaust and a range of wheel and tire choices round out the visuals, while TechArt's suspension module adds a bit more lowness. TechArt also promises an engine tuning kit that'll boost horsepower to around 620. That'll give the dolls something to "O" about. More »

    Porsche Shows Off Cayenne Hybrid

Porsche showed off a pre-production version of its new Cayenne Hybrid to journos today. Here's the takeaway: It can go off road. That's a bold statement, considering there's not a single other hybrid SUV certified for rough duty. (Outside military applications, natch.) According to some in attendance, the Cayenne Hybrid can ford 20 inches of water without shorting out like a black-and-white TV left in the rain. Mileage is reportedly improved by 20%, with additional savings planned by launch. A joint development with Volkswagen, the system will also be used in other VW/Audi and Porsche products — including the coming Porsche Panamera. The chaps at Motor Trend lay out the unique tech involved. [Motor Trend] More »

Porsche: Cayenne Hybrid Will Cruise At 70 with Engine Off

CNN is reporting that the hybrid version of the Cayenne SUV will be 25% more efficient than the current model and will hit showrooms in 2-3 years. Capable of cruising at, but not accelerating up to, 70mph on batteries alone, the Cayenne hybrid will be much faster in battery mode than current hybrids, which only manage 30-40mph. Porsche are currently seeking 300 new engineers to help with the completion of this and the Panamera project. [via CNN]

Soccer Thugs Don't Disappoint: Liverpool Hero Jose "Pepe" Reina's Cayenne Stolen, Hooned and Burned

Ah, Liverpool. Not to cast aspersions, but we figure the odds of the burglars who pulled this off being mustachioed, clad in cheap track suits, on the dole while living with mum are better than 90%. What happened: Pepe saved two goals, which allowed Liverpool to triumph over rival Chelsea in the Champions League semi-finals, setting up an epic rematch against AC Milan in three weeks. Meanwhile, back at his home, some perps broke in, robbed the joint, stole his Porsche Cayenne, hooned it around town and then incinerated it. The burned-out off-roader's charred carcass was found the next morning around 6:30 am. We're assuming the Cayenne was the Turbo, as Reina is a footballer after all. We've driven the Cayenne Turbo and in all honesty cannot think of a better car to go joy riding in. And then light on fire. Bleedin' Scousers. Probably Everton fans. More »

A Pinch of Cayenne: More Talk on Porsche's Small SUV

Germany's Auto Zeitung speculates on the rumored new small Porsche SUV, likely based on the upcoming VW Tiguan and Audi Q5. If you thought the Cayenne was a bad idea, you'll probably consider this X3-fighting soft roader to be the Black Maria coming up the block. Of course, the Cayenne's early success is one of the reasons why Porsche has so much stinking cash lying about, so there you brand-protecting doubters. If Porsche could weather the 914 and 924 (not that they're unfun in certain settings), it can pretty much bring anything to market. [Thanks to Ray for the tip.] More »

    Autoextremist Not Hot For Wiedeking

Sweet Peet fires a few shots across Wendelin's bow in this week's tirade, calling the Cayenne an abject failure and current Porsche management a bunch of bumbling bureaucrats who've essentially pissed away Porsche's legacy. We're not so sure about that. Cayenne sales certainly have reached the saturation point; everyone who wants one has one. But the His Sweetness continually talks about Wiedeking's faithlessness to Dr. Porsche's legacy. Lest we forget, ol' Ferdinand designed tractors and tanks. Porsche, like Honda, is an engineering company, and while the Cayenne is ungainly and not something we would ever buy, it is an engineering feat. We'd probably buy a Tiger tank, though. Actually, we'd totally buy a Tiger tank and roll through the streets of Modesto cranking Wilson Pickett. More »

Clobberin' TIme: VW Touareg to Be First Among VW Hybrids

At the Frankfurt auto show in 2005, in between shots of espresso and facefulls of the Official Media Center Vegetable Soup, we heard from Porsche that the company was working on a hybrid-drive system for its Cayenne SUV and those that share its platform — that's Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7. It was a five-year plan, with the first such models arriving in 2010. Now, According to German magazine Automobilewoche (that's automobile week to you, sparky) the Touareg will be the first VW to be powered by the gas-electric powerplant, a nod toward the available margin in the SUV's price structure to accommodate the system's $2,000+ premium. No word on the off-roadability of such a vehicle, but we'd imagine mudders will be hamstrung by the persnickety electric motor, unless VW comes up with a more hardcore system. More »
