2009 Audi A5 Convertible Pictures Leak Out Ahead Of Official Unveil

The 2009 Audi A5 Convertible, the latest in a long line of four-seat Audi soft tops, appears to have gotten a bit of an early unveil thanks to a photo leak onto the net. The most notable feature is the canvas roof, bucking the hard-on-top trend made popular by Mercedes, BMW, Lexus IS250C and Infiniti G37 Convertible by going soft up top. This means less weight, less complication and more trunk space. But it’s not this model we’re excited about. No, we're excited because there’s a 2009 Audi S5 Cabrio too.
Update: The Audi A5 and S5 Cabrios have been officially unveiled. The official shots are in the galleries below, while the official press release, complete with official US specs is officially after the jump.

Audi Drops Sketches Of A5 Cabrio, Sportback, A7 And Next-Gen A8

Eschewing trite teaser images, Audi has instead given us some actual eye candy, providing official design sketches of four upcoming models: the A5 Cabrio and Sportback, the all-new 2010 A7 four-door coupe and the 2011 A8 sedan. While the A5 Cabrio looks pretty much like a topless A5 coupe, the A5 Sportback is unique for not looking at all like a traditional sportback model, instead bearing resemblance to notchbacks of yore. The A7 brings TT-esque styling to the burgeoning four-door coupe market, while the revised A8, at least in sketch form, looks just about tough as hell. Take a look for yourself in the gallery below. Audi Engine Strategy Through 2011 Leaked

Someone in the know over at Audiblog.nl has spilled forth a detailed list of all Audi brand engines for all models through the 2011 calender year — and the release dates for new models. In addition to the big engine news, the leakers claim that we'll be seeing the rumored Audi A7 model in June of 2010, as well as an S7 version following that fall, and a return to form for the next generation Audi S4. Look below for a detail look at what's coming up for Audi in the next three years. More »

2009 Audi A7 Breaks Its Elusive Cover

Looks like the Audi A5 isn't the only one stirring things up lately. WorldCarFans has posted spy photos they claim to be the long (looooong) rumored Audi A7. Their spy shots look like a test mule wearing an A6 suit that's a little bit too small but we still like what we see. The track is stretched a bit as is the wheelbase, the interior is very reminiscent of the A8 but sports a revised dash and *gasp*, a cloth interior. That probably won't be making it into US production models (whenever that happens). More »

Audi A5 Sportback Possibly in Works

AutoBild is reporting (in German) that in calendar week 13 of 2009, Audi has a new model in the werks dubbed the A5 Sportback. Little is known about this possible new offering, but Autobild is going against the prevailing wisdom that the Sportback will be a wagon-like offering, saying it will compete in the emerging swoopy sedan category currently populated by the Mercedes CLS, pending Porsche Panamera and recently revealed Volkswagen Passat CC. While we're on the subject of the Passat CC, if this speculation is accurate, we're thinking this is V-Dub doing it's platform prostitution best with that new curvy roof line. We'll keep our ear to the ground for more details. [Autobild [translated] via Germancarblog]

Abt Audi AS5 turbodiesel ich bin Bat Guano

A few months back we told you about the Abt AS5 which is a tweaked version of Audi's 3.0-liter TDI A5. Well guess what? They went even harder. Horsepower, originally up from 240 to 272 hp, is now an even 300 ponies. But the real news is the torque. Are you sitting down? Yeah? OK: 442 ft-lbs. of the stuff. From a 3.0-liter engine!! Wasn't it not long ago that heavy duty one-ton pickups stonked way, way less twist? All that torque shows up at 2,400 rpm, 60 mph happens in 5.3 seconds on the car's way to a 164 mph top speed. It always bears repeating: Americans buy horsepower but drive torque. Can we get some decent diesels over here, or what? [via Motor Authority]

Audi A5 E85 Edition Spotted In San Francisco

The folks at CNet's Crave blog were out driving an Infiniti G37 on the curve-tastic streets of San Francisco when they came across a brand-spanking new, and as-of-this-moment unavailable, Audi A5. Even more strange was the car was branded with white lettering declaring that it runs on E85 and that it was powered by the 2-liter turbocharged Euro engine instead of the 3.2-liter V6 it'll have when it comes stateside next year. Renderings Of The Audi A5 and S5 Sportback

We love how Audi just can't stop themselves with the new models. 18 new ones in the coming years is the official company line. Here's one: Looking like the unholy offspring of an A3, a Dodge Magnum and a Mercedes-Benz CLS, somehow this rendering S5 looks pretty good to our wagon loving eyes. Sure, the A4 Avant and A6 Avants are fine cars. No, to our knowledge their will not be an A5 sedan. Why then an A5 station wagon Sportback? Meine Brüder, why the hell not? The Sportback should be wider, taller and more slanty than the A4 Avant. Oh, and hopefully they'll figure out the damn battery for a US bound RS5. [Motor Authority]

    Abt Audi AS5

Audi tuning shop Abt sent word of a new tweaker package for Audi's new A5. It's the AS5, and it includes such add-ons as a front skirt with a grid element that suggests the single-frame grill, side intake gills, rear spoiler and the rear skirt insert. The 3.0 TDI engine, Abt says, gets a significant "power treatment" that ups power from 240 hp to 272 hp — with an extra Abt turbocharger, power reaches 300. Underneath is an adjustable sports suspension, Abt brake system with a disc diameter of 380 millimeters and — in the rendering — the company's AR wheel, available for the A5 in the sizes from 18 to 20 inch. Gilding the lily, or painting the fence? You make the call. More »

Spy Photos: Audi A5 in Simi Valley

Our new buddy Zack caught sight of this jet-black Audi A5 on Route 118 in Simi Valley, California. Maybe it's on its way back from a weekend visiting the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, or perhaps the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza where its pilot showed up too early to take in the Shields & Yarnell Reunion Tour. Maybe he even stopped by the Stagecoach Inn Museum to eyeball its collection of adobe huts. Sounds like a hell of a weekend for whichever earlybird got a ride in Audi's new coupe. Geneva Premiere: Audi A5/S5

GENEVA — Audi's former chief designer Walter d'Silva told the gathered mob here the Audi A5 is the most beautiful car he's designed in his career. We're inclined to agree, considering the original Alfa 156 hasn't aged as well as we thought it would. Nonetheless, it can't be underestimated what an achievement the A5/S5 is in this age when designers generally have no clue what to do with a two-door model that's not a supercar. (We're looking at you, Toyota Solara.) Look for it parked in front of a 12th century apartment complex near you, beginning this summer. More »

Approximation of Bruce: A5 Still Coming to Geneva in March

Spy Photos: Yes, Still More on the Audi A5

The latest spy shots of the Audi A5 coupe come from the land of the midnight sun. No, not Camden, New Jersey. It's the Arctic Circle, where giant, roof-mounted kleig lights are required to indicate the way forward. (For the engineers' sake, we just hope the moose haven't all started wearing Ray Bans, or someone's going to make an impact.) The upcoming Audi A5 coupe's been out on the N rburgring, rain or shine, in shakedown testing ahead of its launch, which some say will be at the Frankfurt show late in 2007. Spies videoed the latest in Audi's adventures in brand extension, which spies say appears to be larger than the BMW 3-series two-door, potentially filling a niche between the 3- and 6-Series coupes (anyone order that?). Word is a convertible version for ze vives who lunch is also in the works, though no word on the likelihood of a highly precise AS5 in our future. More »

Spy Photos: Twin Audi A5's Spotted In Malibu

That's right kids, the Audi A5's been spotted here in the US. Two test mules were seen doing their thang along the winding canyon roads outside of Malibu this weekend, and the kids at Carster were lucky enough to be there and catch the engineering in action. Spy Photos: Audi A5, Getting Closer

We'll have to wait until next year to get a look at Audi's new A5 coupe without some dorky mask or other, but with every subsequent spy shot comes a bit more skin. This latest batch, from the Hans Lehmann squad, reveals the new coupe's swage lines and cascading rear slope. Spy Photos: 2008 Audi A5 in Paris

A quick-thinking digicam jockey caught a nearly uncovered prototype of the upcoming Audi A5 coupe on the streets of Paris. As Carscoop surmises, it'll be based on the next-generation A4 platform and get such corporate powerplants as the 2.0 TFSI, 2.8 V6 FSI & 3.6 FSI — with S5 and RS5 models getting the 4.2-liter V8 in various states of tune. No word yet on which show will host its unveiling, but Detroit and Geneva are the obvious guesses — though they may just pull a TT and launch it showless. More »

Watch out, BMW 3-Series coupe. Audi's getting closer to launching the competition — the A5 coupe — as indicated by these new shots of what's likely an A5 prototype rounding Germany's N rburgring. Report: A5 Convertible to Replace A4 Cabrio

AutoWeek reports on the Audi A5 cabrio — the droptop version of the company's new, larger than small coup-ay. Word is the A5 convertible will replace the A4 cabrio and will be built in-haus, not by Karmann as is the case with the A4 softtop. But while the A5, which is set to debut later this year will be built in Ingolstadt, its cabrio sibling — which won't be out until late '08 according to insiders — will be built in Neckarsulm. New Audi Coupe to get 420hp V8

The German Car Blog is reporting on Audi's upcoming A5 coupe, which Autocar says will get the company's 4.2-liter V8, producing 420hp, in top spec. That version, of course, will be the RS5 — which we'll likely be teased with until the late '00s — but lesser-grade A5s will get commensurate 2.0-liter fours and 3.2-liter sixes. Based on Audi's Nuvolari concept of 2003, the A5 will also be a full four-seater, not some 2+2 knee-cracker. Sorry, Road & Track, we just called dibs on the RS5 / Porsche Cayman S shootout article.
