Automotive News is reporting a bleak day in the making as automakers report their September sales numbers, expected to be off 20% from a year earlier. Shriveling credit markets, continued high fuel prices and a general lack of confidence in the economy are all contributing to push the annualized sales rate down to an estimated 12.5-13.5 million vehicles from 16.2 million last September. The folks at the 800-pound gorilla net car consumer site known as Edmunds who divine reality from the tea leaves of economic numbers and rumors to produce monthly auto sales predictions believe the whole "housing market" and "subprime mortgages" issues are somehow going to mean August US auto sales are going to be down year-to-year. Specifically, to the tune of somewhere around 4.5%. That's a prediction of 1.42 million units sold here in the US, still an 8.7% uptick from the sales numbers of just a month prior. While not always spot on, Edmunds did have a fairly good track record with last month's forecast, picking the correct directional move for five of the top six automakers. For some reason they thought Chrysler'd show a move up. But really, who would have known they'd show some sales instability due to you know, being sold and all? A good buddy of ours always leases. While I've never seen his bank statement, I know what he does for a living (think Hollywood) and I know he could afford to buy. But he doesn't. His reasoning? He likes cars so much that via leasing, he can get a brand new car every two years. To him, it's like a cell phone plan. In our minds however, we love the idea owning the car. True, our credit rating is so jacked we'll never own anything bigger, but if we wanted to we could mod the hell out of our car. Or, drive 25,000 miles in a year without fear of financial reprisal. Still, in less than six months our car will be two-years old, with three more years left to pay. And that new STI is looking mighty sweet. Your thoughts? More »
