The Dodge Caliber SRT4 has six forward gears, but I never once felt the need to use all of them. Was there more mileage to be gained? Sure. But it was a lot more fun to shift down to second and feel the car pull forward. I was driving like a 17-year-old, which is the only way to drive if you're going to enjoy this car. Try driving it like an adult and you're going to hate it. More »

Dodge has announced the winner of the "Are You Tuned Out" contest, which invited the boyfriends and girlfriends of gearheads to write a short essay explaining why their significant other was completely ignoring them. The winner was Zach Madrid of Colorado Springs, who was so tuned-out that he was unable to have a "civilized conversation" with his fiancee if there was a car on television. As the winner of the competition, Madrid gets a brand new Caliber SRT4, which is sure to drive a wedge deeper into their already delicate relationship. The folks at Motive magazine that's not a magazine have a neat little comparo review of sport compacts or as they put it: "sixteen cylinders and four turbos for 1/13th the price of a Veyron." Why they've got to compare everything to a Bugatti Veyron, we've no idea, but it's a good read especially as it gives Mopar meatheads a chance to to see how the latest member of the SRT tribe, the anything-but-cute Caliber, handles the pressure. Unfortunately, even with 285 HP and 265 lb-ft of torque, the Dodge-loving folks out there may find out the importance of a full TCS-off mode and why the limited-slip diff from the old Neon SRT4 probably shouldn't have been parted with on the new pocket road rocket from the Hemi-powered brand. Check out the fully enjoyable review over at Motive. If the Mopar-built Dodge Avenger concept we showed you earlier is named "Stormtrooper," then this here DUB edition Dodge Caliber is most assuredly "Stormtrooper Jr." Or, "Mini Stormtrooper" if you will. We've got no other information on it to give you, but we found it so gleamingly bright and white we thought we'd better snap some shots of this over-DUB-bed Caliber that's anything but cute.

$80.64 per bhp, or $3,832.50 per second to 60, depending on how you justify the purchase. Of course, it's probably easier just to say $22,995 per car, including destination, but that's just not so much fun. Any way you look at it, the 285 HP SRT4 is a serious bargain. With Dodge's push to get Europeans interested in its chunky-monkey Caliber, we're sure the company's pleased tuning shops are getting in on Caliber-tweaking. The latest is from German mod house Konigseder, which gave the Caliber a one-two smack of aftermarket goods. The worked up this body kit, which emphasizes the Caliber's angularity, rather than infuse a slippery look into the slab wagon. It's all atop 22" chrome that wouldn't be out of place in a Kroger's parking lot. With Caliber sales ahead of expectations across the Atlantic, we'll bet this'll be happening pretty often from now on. The German tuners of all things from the 'merican side of DaimlerDouche market have taken it upon themselves to tune the killer of Pig and Bear for the Euro market. Specifically, they've made the Caliber CRD a bit more precise with an "aerodynamic-enhancement program" and some engine tunage. The aero-precision starts with some visual upgrades to the front fascia and a reduction in lift on the front axle and extends along the sides with body cladding that gives the Caliber a lower to the ground look. The body program ends in the rear with a more "bullish contour" over the entirety of the butt-end. On the performance side, they've added in the Startech-exclusive sport exhaust system along with power tuning that ups the output by 40 hp to 180 hp via a plug-and-play control module. All in all, it's still a Dodge Caliber — but hey, a much more precisely tuned one. Full press release after the jump. – Ray Wert More »

I feel like I've been a bit lax as of late in taking trips down El Camino lane, but I feel like I can make it up today. That's because we've got ourselves here a photo-chopped Dodge Caliber. This here p-chop turns Dodge's prostituted Mitsubishi GS platform from a Caliber — a simple mild-mannered CUV, into the Calibermino — a truly revolutionary vehicle able to finally see the vehicle's rugged face placed on an appropriately utilitarian vehicle. We'd buy one. – Ray Wert More »

Oops. Hope you weren't planning on using those brakes in your new '07 model Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep-branded — umm — anything. We've just heard the 'merican side of the German-American hybrid's recalling 62,369 vehicles for what Reuters says is a need to "reprogram a computer that is related to the brake system." And it's a lot of models affected: the Chrysler Sebring, Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans, Dodge Caliber, Dodge Magnum, Jeep Commander, Jeep Compass, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Liberty, Jeep Wrangler and Dodge Nitro SUV's. Hmm. Maybe we should have stuck with just telling you the vehicles the Chrysler Group's not recalling. – Ray Wert <a href="http://jalopnik.com/223958/braking-chrysler-group-looks-for-do+over-on-2007-model-year-recalls-62369-vehicles" title="Click here to read more about Braking! I'll just say the Dodge is the car DCX was supposed to build, while the Jeep is the botched-nose-job twin that made it to production because it "did well in the clinics." More »

Schneller gehen! Brabus's Chrysler-focused tuning brand, Startech, has added new performance products for every Mopar product that's made the leap to the old world. This time, it's the Dodge Caliber's skirt that's been hiked. Startech's new line of performance and cosmetic accessories would likely give Dr. Z that brain-bubbly feeling of German-American cooperation (also known as the Mercedes bends). On the performance end, they've fashioned a control module that boosts output of the 2.0-liter CRD diesel by 40 hp (to 180 hp) and torque from 229 to 266 lbs-ft. Like the company's other model-specific lines, stainless-steel exhaust, 19" and 20" Monostar wheels and an aero kit are also available. More »

As we heard yesterday in the Tom LaSorda press scrum-n'-tumble out in Auburn Hills, the German-American hybrid's running into some troubles with inventories of trucks and the Dodge Durango. But, as was told to us yesterday — at the same time, they're working to boost the small car / mid-size SUV side of the sales ratio, pushing those new Dodge Calibers out to dealers to sell as quickly as their <strike>Mexican</strike> Illinois-based plant can birth them. Or at least that was what we've been told. Instead, Katie Merx over at the Freep's reporting that the boys n' girls in Auburn Hills, during a super-double-secret sat-call to dealers, explained they won't be getting those quick-selling-like-a-bunny Calibers unless they're also buying the slow-selling-as-molasses Dodge Ram trucks and Dodge Durangos. And not just a few more, but 50% more than what dealers originally requested — an additional 90 days' worth of supply. But hey, they're going to try to make it easier... More »

On a recent trip to Reno, I was "upgraded" to a 2007 Dodge Caliber by the good folks at Enterprise. (Having reserved an economy-class car, I was surprised that they would call the Caliber something other than that.) Approaching the car, my wife actually said it was "cute." I was expecting her to hate it, given Dodge itself calls the Caliber "Anything But Cute." I thought she'd much prefer the curvier Jeep Compass (which essentially is Pat to the Caliber's Hans and/or Franz). Fortunately, they didn't have a Jeep Compass on the lot. More »

In an orgasm of viral marketing, Dodge is spewing its virulent seed across the web hoping to infect as many Europeans as possible with a rash...a RamRash, that is. It's part of the automakers campaign to bring Dodge vehicles to the Euro Union, a plae the brand's been conspicuously absent from since...well...since forever. Now it's hoping to change all that with some good ol' fashioned viral vids. In addition to the one above (which incidentally has been floating around the web for a while), we've got the other five contagious commercials after the jump. Just watch out for the horns. More »

So the folks at Gaywheels.com decided to tally up the most-researched vehicles on their site, and guess which car came out on, um, er, top? Yes, boys and girls who like girls who like girls who like boys who like boys who like girls (or however that old Blur lyric goes), it's the Saturn Sky. The <strike>Lambda</strike> Kappa-platform-based roadster takes the prize. As the Gaywheels pointed out, the list isn't dominated by stereotypically-pricey vehicles, although we have a feeling that Spence wasn't one of the ones doing the research. On the other hand, CTE might've been. The list after the jump. [Thanks to Zerin for the tip.] More »

Chrysler's been hyping the new third shift being added to the Toledo, Ohio plant to boost production of the Liberty-platform Dodge Nitro SUV. And no wonder — they're hiring the 750 added workers in Toledo from the pool of UAW workers sitting around in the job bank. That's the type of news that makes the UAW very happy — unlike the news out of the Belvidere, Illinois plant. They'll be adding a third shift, just like Toledo — except with one minor difference. More »

Sure, why not name your genetically-gifted child after the bloodiest episode up to that point in American history? A skirmish in which the first Grand Wizard of the KKK grabbed a Union solider, yanked him up onto his horse and used him as a human shield to race back through the line. Meanwhile, U.S. Grant, who looked just like our pal Mike's Klansman neighbor Mister Somerville, was hobbling around on crutches aboard a gunboat. Oh, and Dodge is super-proud of their ad placement in the latest issue of People, having scored a deal to get three pages of paid ink in the midst of the story of the spawn of Brangelina. We're gonna go back to writing about the War of Northern Aggression now. More »

Pig and Bear want to thank all of you for bringing their thoughts and pictures to life in excruciatingly horrible detail. You all are winners in our book but we have but one iPod nano to give away and as we thoroughly detest the thought of making an actual decision, we're passing the buck on to y'all. Tell us which creative and talented mind gets to take home the prize. Hit up the picture gallery below, and then click through for the poll to vote for the winner. Polls close at Noon on Tuesday, June 13th — otherwise known as tomorrow — so remember to come back and check out how your favorite is doing — and as they say down in Florida...vote early, and vote often! More »

New survey results from KBB and Harris interactive show new-car shoppers seem to think the "anything but cute" Dodge Caliber is being hyped to death (it was the fairy, wasn't it?). It's high on the new study's buzz scale, but low on the "I'm interested in buying it" scale — though strong sales belie such interpretations. On the flip side, the Mercedes GL scores high in interest, but low on buzz, despite a major ad campaign with spots currently in heavy rotation on TV. Nonetheless, the two most buzzworthy cars, according to the study, were the Saturn Sky and Toyota FJ Cruiser, two models the media's been googley-eyed over since nearly ever. Let's look at it in our own, geek-intensive terms: Google results: More »

Looks like Pig & Bear were able to finally get theirs — NHTSA took a brand new Dodge Caliber and smashed the crap out of it just to rate how well it withstood the impact. Lo and behold, it received 5 stars for taking it in the face like the little slut of a CUV it is — proving even if he had taken Pig & Bear to the meadow, he'd have taken them there safely in the front seats and in a frontal collision at 35 mph. Yup, this li'l whore is anything but cute — and Pig & Bear can finally rest in peace. More »

BBDO already created a silly li'l set of ads to sell Dodge's Caliber CUV — and now, thanks to an enterprising reader we see they've got some silly li'l viral video to go with it. Watch three friends — bear, pig and Caliber — enjoy a lovely afternoon trip to the meadow to dance and sing. What could possibly go wrong? Well, since the Caliber is "anything but cute" there's always the possibility the Caliber could shoot the bear, mount his head on a wall and then cook up the pig as a nice n' tasty ham. We mean, that's one option — right? More »

Dodge is taking direct aim at the European market with the Caliber, their new entry-level CUV. With prices of just under 13,000 euros not-including VAT for the 1.8-litre version and over 18,800 euros for the higher-powered version with a 2-litre turbodiesel. Dodge's claim to have more horsepower per euro than rivals brings up the question of which demographic Dodge may be looking for — especially because Dodge is such an unknown brand across the pond. Here's our guess for what they'll be looking for: <a href="http://jalopnik.com/172185/dodge-this-europes-getting-a-new-caliber-of-cuv" title="Click here to read more about Dodge This! Looks like Dodge may have a bit of a hit on their hands with the Caliber. Although still too early to tell, sales of DaimlerChrysler's entry-level CUV have been so good the corporate office has ordered dealers to nix employee discounts. Which leads us to the question on all our minds — what's the benefit to working for an automaker again? Just curious. <a href="http://jalopnik.com/168146/incentives-we-dont-need-no-stinkin-incentives" title="Click here to read more about Incentives? Back when one of us was but a wee lad, we remember getting our first rock-n-roll hard-on from Justine Frischmann of Elastica. Frischmann and the new Brit invasion to us seemed to pop up outta nowhere, and so did we. What can we say, we were all about that sneer, man. She was just so totally tomboy-bad-ass-hot when she bared her teeth for the cam. We wanted nothing more than to "Line Up" and make our own "Connection" with her. In New York this past week we had the opportunity to step inside the what we thought was the base model of Dodge's new entry-level Caliber CUV, and we were afraid a similar connection wasn't true for its iPod holder. We noticed something rather peculiar... More »

DATELINE, NOW: The "Geely Copywriter" has apparently struck again, this time on the Web. In the latest attack, a Dodge Web site promoting the 2007 Caliber was defaced by misspellings. Sources say "GC," as he's known is the obvious suspect in the incident, during which letter transpositions occurred in two words in plain view of visitors of the site. More news as it happens.
