Report: Cadillac May Offer CTS With Turbodiesel V8

Rumors are starting to spread of GM considering fitting the new Duramax 4.5-liter turbo diesel V8 in the Cadillac CTS. That would mean an oil-burnin' sedan with a possible 310 HP and at least 520 lb-ft of torque. Think of it as a sort of mid-performance model slotted between the standard 304 HP CTS and the top-spec 556 HP 2009 CTS-V...but with good fuel economy. That's right, not only does the Duramax mill meet new emissions regulations but it's 50-state-legal and it'll also return an estimated 20-25% better fuel economy than a comparable gasoline-powered V8. That efficiency combined with the pavement-melting torque could make for perhaps the best all-around American car ever made. More »

2010 Cadillac CTS Coupe Strips Down, Shows Some Skin

A Cadillac CTS Coupe without the usual clunky camo was scoped with a long-range lens through a misty Michigan morning by the eagle-eyed photographers at KGP. The photos show that in the transition from CTS coupe concept to reality the designers managed to maintain the large and shapely rear end, but with a few key differences. The tweaks include the addition of safety equipment like red reflectors and although the concept was pillarless, an obvious B-pillar. At least the designers have added a small piece of dark cheater glass, which we're starting to think of as the new requirement for any cut-down sedan-to-coupe platform from a US automaker. Cadillac Will Downsize Engines When Customers Prove That's What They Want

Cadillac is ready to downsize the engines in their luxury offerings — and they have the ability to do it today if that's what customers indicate they want, according to GM Exec VP Thomas G. Stephens. Auto Observer reports he specifically mentioned the possibility of dropping a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, like the turbo Ecotec, into the Cadillac CTS, along with the possibility of trading cylinder count and displacement for turbocharging and direct injection, à la Ford's EcoBoost strategy. Lansing Paper Reports Local GM Plant To Assemble CTS Coupe, Wagon

The Lansing State Journal claims that the recently green-lighted Cadillac CTS Coupe and CTS wagon will be built at the Lansing Grand River plant, the facility that currently produces Caddy's CTS, STS and SRX vehicles. The report also mentions a specially designed 2.9-liter diesel engine that will be added to increase European market penetration, but no word on whether the diesel will be federally certified. "General Motors will unveil a Cadillac CTS wagon this fall in an effort to compete with BMW's 3 series and Mercedes C-class wagons. Cadillac intends to start production in 2009 for global sale. GM has shown a CTS coupe concept to be produced next year."

Really? So GM's really going to build a 2010 Cadillac CTS wagon? Who knew? Wait, we did. Also — a 3-series? Our sources tell us the CTS wagon will more likely be a direct competitor to the 5-Series and E-Class wagon rather than a 3-Series. OK Automotive News, what else ya got? More »

2009 Cadillac CTS-V Specs Made Official, Gets 556 HP

We knew the new super-spec 2009 Cadillac CTS-V would be getting some impressive output numbers, and today the official figures are out — 556 HP at 6,100 RPM and 551 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 RPM. With those bitchin' numbers, the CTS-V will be doing 0-60 MPH in a lightning fast 3.9 seconds, with a standing quarter mile coming in at 12 seconds flat. Sure, but how fast will she go? What about 175 MPH with the six-speed auto and 191 MPH with the manual transmission? Okay, we're a little light-headed at the moment; obviously the CTS-V is warping the space around our brains.

Inside Line's reporting today that GM's killed a convertible version of the hot little CTS two-door. Although to be fair it's hard for us to mourn the loss of a product when we didn't know the General's luxe brand was even thinking of doing a drop-top version of the Cadillac CTS Coupe until we learned of its demise. Still, kudos to the General for the decision because if the convertible version of the CTS Coupe ended up being anything like the most recent series of 'verts from GM — think Pontiac G6 convertible — we're pretty damn happy they won't be building it. Although if they want to build a 'vert version of the Cadillac CTS Wagon, we'd be all for that. True, it'd look ugly as sin, but we'd totally buy one. [Inside Line] More »

While we're not entirely sure of the year nor the designation — we're pretty sure what we've got here is what we've been talking about for quite some time now. Yes, that appears to be a wagon-ized version of the already popular Cadillac CTS. We are going to hazard a guess that if it's being built starting next spring it'll have to be a 2010 CTS Wagon. Of course, with the current guess of the Cadillac CTS coupe bear a designation of "CTC" we're thinking maybe the General could name this big-in-the-rear and blade-edged Caddy the "CTW." Whatever. Seriously, the boys and girls at the General can name whatever they want to because all we know is that is surely some seriously pants-tightening Cadillac Style going on under that camo cladding. Oh, GM! It was so cute to drop this bombshell on us. You heard about it first very early this morning, but now here it is, live and in the flesh—the Cadillac CTS Coupe. Even Bob Lutz himself was amazed that GM could keep this baby a secret, until... well, now, of course. The design for the vehicle is derived from the CTS sedan, and here's the enchanting backstory: Once the sedan was finished, the design team continued to press their luck, coming up with something so beautiful that we're not sure how GM can say no to production. Vehicle specifics were sketchy, but we did learn that the coupe can be adapted for a diesel engine.

Given recent gains that Cadillac has been making in quality and perception, GM has decided to start expanding into new markets, including selling the CTS in Australia around the fourth quarter of 2008. Much to the disappointment of the Aussies, the new CTS will be sporting the 3.6-liter direct injection V6. While the capable engine puts out 304 hp and 273 lb.-ft of torque, this is the land of RWD V8s and GM's Holden brand currently squeezes the 6.0-liter V8 into their luxury offerings. Maybe we can make a trade? Three CTS's for every one SS V-Series Ute that they'll import back to us? MT names Cadillac CTS Car of the Year, Needs Help Paying For Gas

Motor Trend has chosen the Cadillac CTS as its 2008 Car of the Year, attributing the win to sharp styling, great driving dynamics and luxury value — pretty much, the car rocked every category. For the General, it marks the first time in ten years that the company has taken home MT's top award. The Corvette won the Golden Calipers in 1998. Cadillac also has a special place in COTY history: Motor Trend's very first Car of the Year award went to Cadillac in 1949 when the award was given to an entire company, not just a single car. The CTS beat out the Audi A5/S5, Chevrolet Malibu, Dodge Grand Caravan, Honda Accord, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Scion xB and Volvo V70/XC70 finalists to earn the award. The testing consists of a barrage of track tests and a 28.5-mile road loop to explore everyday driving characteristics. And finally, in a sign that gas prices really are out of control, Texaco has become the official fuel of Motor Trend by supplying all of the gas for COTY testing.
