The base Boxster now comes equipped with a 2.9-liter direct injection mill pumping out 255 hp, up 10 hp from the previous generation. In S-trim the 3.4-liter unit, now with direct fuel injection, is good for 310 hp. The biggest news may be the PDK double-clutch über gearbox which provides better fuel economy (north of 26 mpg) and quicker acceleration than the six-speed manual. If these shots are in fact the real thing, then changes seem to be limited on the exterior to the shape of the front bumpers below the headlights, the tail lamps getting a bit more curvy and the exhaust going twin exit rather than single. To be perfectly honest, if we woke up to a facelift like this, we'd probably smack the surgeon. Of course that may be because the curve on the bumper below the headlight seems wholly unnatural, but maybe that's just us. We'll be waiting to see if these are the real deal shots or just something Autoweek.nl created themselves. More »

Should you be inclined to purchase one of the 50 US-bound Boxster S cars, or 200 Cayman S Sports, you'll get eight more ponies between your go-pedal and the road, for a total of 303 HP. Also, a set of 5 mm wheel spacers should provide the cars with slightly more neutral handling tendencies, possibly bordering on oversteer. You'll also find an array of cosmetic upgrades including stripes and badging, and in the case of the Boxster, a fancy new Porsche-designed wristwatch. How about giving him this Chinese knockoff version he can wreck all day long at a fraction of the price? Brilliant! Though not cheap, with a 'buy it now' price of $80 grand, this Carrera actually started life as a Boxster, got put in the taffy puller and stretched 12 inches front and back, and then had a new body dropped on top. In addition to the face-lifted looks, powertrain changes should make both cars faster and more fun to drive, with the Cayman S being boosted to 320 HP and 273 lb-ft of torque while returning better fuel economy. Unlike some automakers we could think of, Porsche doesn't come out with special editions every other day so it's kind of special when they do. Inspired by Porsche's victory at the 1960 12 Hours of Sebring, the Boxster RS 60 Spyder Limited Edition pays homage to the winning Type 718 RS in a number of ways. The Silver Metallic paint and Carrera Red interior is your most obvious hint, unless you're sitting in the passenger seat and you notice the plaque on the dash. You might also notice the 19-inch SportDesign alloy wheels and a unique front spoiler. Internally, the modified Boxster gets a new exhaust with unique dual tailpipes that boost the output of the flat-six to 303 horsepower. Porsche's Active Suspension Management is included and will help you fling all that extra style around the track (or country club). (Celebrating to ourselves, that is.) Now, the Porsche tweakers who stunned the world with a 211-mph Porker are rolling out a "25th Anniversary" edition. It's the 3400 K, and comes in coupe and cabrio versions. They're mild by Alois Ruf's standards — 400 hp and 324 lb-ft of torque at peak — but they're billed as entry models. That's because — surprise — it's based on the Cayman and Boxster. According to the UK's What Car, they're calling the tranny, "Porsche Doppel Kupplungen," or PDK for short (making it as easy on the options sheet as VW's DSG). But when will it arrive, and in what models? A report from last year indicated the heirs of Ferdinand will offer the new box across all model lines. So keep your ears pointed northeast, because the noise Farago makes when the PDK shows up in a Boxster is going to make Howard Dean seem like a mute. They've snatched up pictures of the Porsche's newly re-designed Boxster doing some cold weather testing in Stuttgart, Germany and the ass-end doing some not-as-cold weather testing in northern Scandinavia. According to their moles and our own eyes,
"the car will get a new front bumper with LED daylight driving lights as well as re-designed and much rounder air intakes...furthermore a new rear bumper and completely new taillights with LED are included in this major restyling. Technical improvements are for now still unknown as are changes to the interior."

It's not just the exterior that's gotten its bling on (and yes, "bling" truly is the most appropriate term here), but also the controls, steering wheel and door handles and alloy wheels. According to a press release, "it not only attracts attention, but also makes the hearts of men and women beat faster." The base model will get a 5-hp boost, to 245 hp, from a similar 2.7-liter mill as the '06 model. The Boxster S, which is getting a new, 3.4-liter flat-six, will get a 15-hp bump to 295 hp — which is said to propel the S from Zero to 60 a tenth of a second quicker that the previous model (5.4 seconds vs. 5.5 seconds). Both engines will get Porsche's VarioCam Plus variable-valve timing — upgraded, natch — and both cars can be ordered with Porsche's revised Tiptronic autobox, which Porsche promises new settings and better performance. With a nod to its previous extra-girthed Boxster and 911 Carrera kits, the company developed a similar body kit for the newest 987 model roadster. Axle add-ons, fender flares and 235/30 ZR 20s in the front and 305/25 ZR 20s in the rear serve to increase the base Boxster's track by eight centimeters. Ahead of the posterior flares, a set of intakes improve airflow to the engine, and up front a new spoiler — with intakes of its own to improve front-brake cooling — reduces lift at the front axle. TechArt's adjustable sport suspension is tuned for ultra-wide wheels and lowers the roadster by 25 millimeters. A moderate horsepower upgrade (15hp) is a matter of one of TechArt's engine kits including an upgraded air filter and tweaked engine software. More »
