Fifth Gear co-host Tom Ford managed to drive a stock BMW 320d ED from the Chunnel exit in France to Munich, Germany and nearly the entire way back on one tank of diesel. That's 1,013 miles, a 68.9MPG average. More »

BMW dropped their hotrod oil burner today at the LA Auto Show, showcasing a twin-turbo 3.0 liter diesel engine that is both quick and clean. Clean enough to be legal in all 50 states while keeping it's fun factor. Power numbers sit pretty at 265 horses and 425 lbs-ft of torque; just enough to pull the porch off of your buddy's house, if you so desire. Sprints from 0-60 run at a very non-dieselish six seconds flat while fuel mileage estimates are 23 MPG in the city and 36 MPG on the open road. Of course, iDrive is back with an all-new learning curve to bring many hours of knob-spinning glee as you fumble your way through a plethora of menus. Full details in the press release below. More »

Hearing our pleas, we're being told BMW will be bringing the diesel 3-series to the US in the coming months. As proof, we've got shots from our spy friends at KGP of the oil-burning BMW doing some final testing on American soil as well shots of it at the green-handled pump. The 2009 BMW 335d should feature a slightly lower level of performance compared to the European turbodiesel, but that still means 265 HP and 425 lb-ft of torque. This should result in a 0-to-60 MPH time of around 6.2 seconds while getting a rumored 23 MPG city / 33 MPG highway. Full spy report below the jump. More »

We already told you that new BMW X6 would feature a diesel mill, and now we get more information on BMW's diesel plans, which includes the introduction of a Diesel X5 xDrive 35d and BMW 335d Diesel 3-series. The new powerplant will apparently be a 265 horsepower 3.0-liter inline-six with twin turbos capable of 425 lb-ft of torque at 1,750 rpm. And it's 50 state legal!
