BMW's long-awaited four-door coupe model's apparently nearing the end of its development pipeline, as newly retrieved patent images indicate. The elegant new model will be essentially a four-portal 6 Series competing with the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi A7. More »

According to BMW North America CEO Jim O'Donnell, the 2012 BMW 6-series will come with a radical new technology codenamed "good looks" that's apparently able to prevent passersby from vomiting at the sight of it. The E24 and E28 are pretty similar under the skin, so they get put in the same box here… and in that box, we find mostly sadness! Still, these cars have great LeMons potential, once the bugs have been worked out. More »

In 2003, BMW brought the 6-Series back after a 14-year hiatus. Some felt it didn't pay homage to the classic 635CSi. Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. The BMW E24 is not exactly an endangered species, but it's such a good-looking car that every single one I see in Alameda qualifies for this series. Never mind that I have photographs of six Alameda 2002s stockpiled- it's 6 Series time again!

Like all children of the Back To The Future generation, we can vividly remember the moment Marty spies his nemesis Griff Tannen in his hover BMW during the second installment of the futuristic trilogy — though we were never huge enough fans to track down the original movie car, buy it and attempt a complete restoration. Jeff Chabotte on the other hand, did just that. The fan of all things McFly bought the BMW 633-based "hover craft" from a fellow BTTF fanboy. Chabotte then restored the car to movie condition — obviously, and sadly, without flight capabilities. Like our other hero of the week who built a Lamborghini in his basement, Chabotte spent his blood, sweat and tears on this project strictly for the love of the car. We get that. More »

Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. I've been seeing a fair number of E24 BMWs in Alameda lately, so let's add this one to the DOTS parade. We've had this '83 633CSi, this '87 M6, and '87 L6 so far, and now it's the turn of another '83 (I've been looking for some 5- and 7-series BMWs of this era on the island, but so far I haven't found any parked in photo-friendly spots).

Every day seems to bring more doom and gloom for the American public. With everything made of oil skyrocketing, food getting pricier, houses going down and movies like Indiana Jones in theaters, there is little to encourage fun car purchases. Business Week is wondering openly about the future of "weekend cars" — convertibles, two-door coupes and other impractical but generally delightful machinery. They think cars like the BMW 6-Series, Mercedes-Benz CLK, and even the beloved Chevy Corvette are doomed to disappear. Though our rational mind says 'probably,' the rest of it says 'Noooooo!' After the spectacular body work and 30-inch kicks on that Mercedes CL the other day, we didn't think modified German steel could get any more extravagant. However, today the sun rose anew and provided for us a refreshed challenge to the sensibilities. Tuning house Lithuanian National (which we can only assume is a front for blue jeans trafficking) has decided to show up their entry into the realm of super-mod schteel. This gives that CL a run for it's money, but we're not sure quite what to make of it. What does that mean? Poll time. More »

Cruising down the highway, a noise which sounded like mischievous squirrels nesting under the car caught my ear. I kept driving. Some minutes later, passing motorists began gawking, waving, honking, and pointing at my car. "Do you see anything?" I asked my brother who was riding shotgun. Looking over his shoulder, he casually replied, "yeah there's sparks" and went back to his cell phone conversation. I knew exactly what had happened. Some part of the 25-year-old exhaust system had decided it was time to give up the ghost. More »

Contemporary American artist Robert Rauschenberg joined Pimp C and Janis Joplin on the list of artists from Port Arthur, Texas that we're sad to not have with us anymore. Though better known for any number of artistic accolades and pieces, we'll always remember Rauschenberg as the guy who designed the cover to Speaking in Tongues and, more importantly, the sixth BMW art car, a BMW 635 CSi. A departure from previous art cars, Rauschenberg's BMW stretched the concept of the car as a canvas by making it an actual canvas for works from Ingres, Bronzino as well as his own photographs. Additionally, this car was the first to incorporate the wheels into the design in such a strong manner. The product is both unique and thoroughly modern with an approach as timeless as the 6-series BMW itself. You can see a bit of the process in the video above, as well as Rauschenberg himself, who seems to be taking a break from his day job as the manager of a Foot Locker. Somewhere on the road between Project Car Hell and the Jalopnik Fantasy Garage is a place known as reality. And since today is apparently BMW 633CSi day, we thought we'd share what our reality is. This is my personal '83 633CSi. It's not quite old enough to be a real classic, and it's certainly not new enough to be a rational daily driver for most people, but I like it just fine. Yes, it may be from the malaise era, complete with huge diving-board bumpers, but it still manages to look fantastic, particularly in this shade of Delphin Grey. Though that's not to say it's a perfect car. More »

We've only had one 6-series BMW so far in this series, so when I saw this '83 parked just around the corner from the '74 Porsche 911 Targa, I figured it was worth shooting. This one is a good example of a solid daily-driven car; a few scars, but nothing too serious. More »

The folks over at Kelley Blue Book have announced the ten vehicles they predict will have the best resale value over the next five years in each category. Not surprisingly, the Corvette Z06 makes the list for "high performance vehicle" as there's no high privilege charge attached to buying a new one. They predict you should be able to get 50% of what you paid back in five years on the Vette. The full list below the jump: More »

We kid you not — the press release for the new 2008 BMW 6 Series is 25 pages long. Seriously. We've no idea why on God's green earth you'd need 25 pages to describe the new hardtop and drop-top versions of the 650i when we already all knew the facelift would be "mild." Heck, in the release lede, BMW calls this four-year-old model merely "A fresher look, new standard and optional equipment give the 650i Coupe and Convertible even more appeal for 2008." If you're just looking for the basics on the changes from last year — here they are: It's got a new electronic shifter, a new optional Sport Automatic with flappy paddle shifters and rpm matching on the downshift and umm — wait, there's got to be more. Here we go — LED taillights and the lane departure system. So the big news today is really the pricing — what's the damage? The base 650i coupe starts at $76,375 and the 650i convertible will set you back $83,475. For those of you interested in the "voluptuous curves" and the rest of the Teutonic PR silliness that is this BMWgasm, all 50,000 characters of the full press release are below the jump. More »
