Struggling to find new ways to add weight to its product line, BMW has released an armored version of the 5-series. The 5-Series Security adds only 551 LB to a regular 550i or 530i, while making the most of high-tech materials to ensure complete safety for its occupants. Like the BMW X5 Security, this vehicle can withstand projectiles up to a .44 Magnum. With the extensive use of Kevlar mats in the doors, roof and floor, steel plates in particularly vulnerable areas and 22mm glass-and-plastic security windows, BMW claims the Security models leave no gap for a projectile, shrapnel or shattered glass to penetrate into the passenger cabin. The stop/start system already found on four-banger BMW 1-Series and 3-Series cars is expected to make its way onto six-cylinder models sometime within the next year. The system automatically shuts off the engine when the car is at a standstill, restarting the engine automatically when the driver is ready to accelerate again. It's likely only to appear in the 3-Series' six-cylinder models at first, but we wouldn't be too surprised to see it in the 1-Series and 5-Series sooner or later. BMW announced today that it was recalling approximately 200,000 vehicles because a sensor issue might stop the front passenger airbag from deploying. The issue comes from small cracks that could develop within a seat detection mat, causing the airbag to be deactivated. Affected are MY 2006 3-series and MY 2004-2006 5-series cars and MY 2004-2006 X3 SUVs. Thankfully, no one has reported being hurt because of potential problem, and it doesn't seem to affect other airbags. We guess It's a good thing that BMW drivers are so unlikely to crash...
