Based on the plates, it looks like we're also able to put a name to the bot who will be played by the Chevy Beat: Skids. Despite our best efforts, we couldn't decipher the plate on the Chevy Trax, but that's okay because the upgraded Chevy Camaro will still be Bumblebee, and that's the only one we really care about anyway. These images come via an eagle-eyed forum member over at GMInsideNews and show the Beat on its evolutionary path from angry little hornet concept to mildly perturbed production pod. Given the number of times we've seen the Daewoo-sourced minicar on domestic shores, we have to believe something is up; the presence of dealer instead of manufacturer plates on this tester simply reinforces our suspicions. We're a bit suspicious as it appears to be sitting on the floor of some unnamed auto show, but the refined body panels suggest production intent and design for manufacture, so we'll buy it for now. Shockingly the Beat maintains much of its radical, in-your-face styling and bizarrely grows a set of roof racks, O.G. Plymouth Neon-style. The Beat gets a buddy for some hot weather testing and we get a look at the interior for the first time. For a subcompact, it's hard to be surprised by the spartan accommodations and the long-handled shifter, but we do like the floating gauge pod mounted directly to what appears to be a tilting steering column. Coupled with a high seating arrangement and supposedly true-to-concept styling, the Beat is shaping up to be more than your average econo-beater. More »

I guess when you have a contest you shouldn't be surprised when the one you named Beat beats the competition. Out of 1.9 million votes this was the top selection, besting the Trax and the Groove. The Beat is definitely the most boy-racer-futuristic looking, so it's not a shock that it won. Curiously, included with PR gunk stuff about the Camaro Convertible and Holden EFIJY concepts are these pics plus a press release for the tiny Chevy Beat.You might remember this diminutive Chevrolet from such auto shows as Christmas Ape Goes to Summer Camp New York, which means you may also remember the Beat's two siblings, Trax and Groove. And those cars are suspiciously absent from the $5.99 flash drive, which obviously means something!! Though Automobile is stating this month that the Beat is most likely bound for Europe while we in the US would get the SUV-i-er Groove. All we know for sure is that the press release quotes Injo Kim, the Beat's designer, as saying, "Every morning when you wake up, you yearn to be a hero that day." But because that didn't stop Times freelancer Jerry Garrett from making the claim a few months back that we were suffering from a cold and snowy blizzard, we figure we'd return the favor of tossing this inaccuracy out there, mostly because it would seem we've found Jerry pitting yet another set of auto shows into a competition. Except this time, he's being Manhattan-centric instead of fluffing up the West Coast.
"As in any beauty pageant, contestants will be judged on their personality, poise, performance and sex appeal. Think of New York as the final elimination round in a series of competitions over the last four months at auto shows in Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago and Geneva. The winners here advance to the true test: the showroom floors of America's car dealerships."

I'm somewhere near Saint Marks Place in New York City, and the only sounds in the room are the tapping of two Apple keyboards and the rattling dull whine of air filters sucking the cigarette smoke out of the air of a spacious loft replete with a machine gun and a glass-encased model of the Bismarck. On the chairs at the bar hang three jackets, with a black, non-descript number in the middle. To its left is a navy blue Red Kap work jacket with a lakes modified roadster screenprinted across the back, reading "GEARHEAD." All three are smaller than a jar of cornishons, but each one follows a distinctive style path. The Beat is a sporty hatch, not far from Chevy's WTCC concept; the Trax sports "active lifestyle" pretensions; and the Groove is the European urbo-hipster finished in a trendy matte coat and wearing the new face of Chevy. Chevrolet is taking its own poll on which of the three US car buyers like the most, at www.vote4chevrolet.com. One sad day, while driving home, a postal van drove out in front of him on a blind corner and well, the Beat has sat under a tarp at his dad's house ever since, it's 660cc mill relegated to dinghy-anchor duty due to the car's smashed up front end. Now Paukert the Exclaimer gives us an idea: Why not swap NSX parts onto it like these fellows from Nihon Automotive College did? They also apparently have constructed some manner of keiamino.
