While not the sportiest looking vehicle on the road, the new Aveo5 does come with a new 1.6L DOHC Ecotec engine that sports variable valve timing and is good for 107 horsepower and 26/34 mpg. The updated "tall car" interior has the stomach to match its mouth, swallowing 42 cubic feet of whatever, which is a decent amount for the segment and more than a Scion xD (35.7 cu ft w/ seats down). The materials are also improved, including a mix of carbon-fiberesque finishes, faux-leather and wood grain. Standard features include side air bags, OnStar, a sound system with auxiliary jack for your iPod, optional XM satellite radio and a Five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Zhang Chunying of Beijing, China, doesn't seem to share our aversion to silicon, doing just that to beat out 119 other contestants. Chunying became so exhausted by her efforts to win the $9,000 car that she had to be carried away. But it's not just new sheet metal, they've decided to import an American name to go along with the hot new looks. Something that evokes absolutely no thoughts of hot hatch sub-compact — Aveo. But this Aveo ain't your college freshman's B-segment. It's got a new look that seems to represent a melding of the 'merican strong centerline with a more Euro WTCC-like grille. The Euro Aveo will go on sale starting in March 2008 in both a 1.2-liter, 84 HP and 1.4-liter, 98 HP gas engine flavor — neither of which, thank goodness, is available in the states. Lucky for us, the folks at TheCarBlogger happened upon a 2008 model sitting in a South Korean amusement park. From what we're able to discern, it'll be receiving the newly-redesigned interior from the 2007 sedan to go along with the new front end. Also, it'll have side vents. Because, you know, side vents are the new black. By the way, just as a note to automakers — a bright yellow paint job with black tarp camouflage is probably not the best way to disguise your new car. The "hot-hatch" shows off a much larger, more aggressive Chevrolet bisected fascia similar to what we've seen in recent Malibu spy photographs. More importantly, there's also a two-slot side vent located above the repeater lamp on either side of the car — Doane claims it ain't some engineer's idea of a joke (and what a joke, let us tell you) — but it's non-Memorex. With expected pricing to continue under $10,000 — probably without the side vents — this hatch is sure to be the one of the most bargain of bargain basement buys. ]]> http://jalopnik.com/index.php?op=postcommentfeed&postId=199555&view=rss&microfeed=true <![CDATA[GM Says To Dealers: No Gas For You!]]> Like the Soup Nazi, the General's laying down the law on dealerships in the latest missive from the bean-counting bureaucrats at the RenCen (Note — in today's episode, the part of "bean-counting bureaucrat" will be played by GM Veep of Industry Dealer Affairs, William Powell), by making it clear they'll no longer reimburse dealers for a full of tank of gas upon delivery. Instead, the Detroit-based automaker will be handing the dealership $20 for cars and $30 for trucks — which if we've calculated correctly, will mean the dealer will be able to pump just over six gallons into a car and ten gallons into a truck without dipping into their own pockets. Hmm...since the tank of a Chevy Aveo (pronounced with the em-pha-sis on whatever syll-a-ble feels right on to ya) holds 11 gallons and a Chevy Silverado holds 34 gallons — that'll be a differential of five gallons and 24 gallons in a truck. So who's gonna pick up that cost? Well, the dealer will initially...but fear not consumers, we expect you'll start seeing a "fuel delivery charge" soon added as a box on your next car purchase or lease agreement. Although there were no test drives today boys and girls — we can tell you that this car is all about saving you the benjamins, so although what we hear about the performance leaves much to be desired (including the days best quote — "Does the 13 second 0-60 performance give you cause for concern?")you can basically afford it with a newspaper route — the 4-door we saw has a base price of $12,395. Then, it turns into the most economical enabler of catastrophic chest compression you can buy. Singled out as having an "unacceptably high risk of life-threatening injury to the driver s chest," the Aveo nonetheless scored a three-star rating from the agency. More »

Chevy's Daewoo-designed is larger and more powerful than its predecessor, with a a 16-valve DOHC four engine that'll put a dent in your loafers (huh?), producing around 103 horsepower and 107 lb.-ft of torque and hooked to a five-speed manual. With new munchkins due this year from Toyota, Honda and Nissan — and others expected from Dodge and VW, the entry-level market looks like it'll be hotter than a goat roast in in El Azizia. The company recently released an image of a dimunitive sedan, shown at the Shanghai auto show under the Chervrolet banner. According to the company, the new car will be built in China and Korea, and sold in Korea as the Daewoo Gentra. Daewoo designers collaborated with the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center, run by GM and China venture partner, Shanghai Auto. Expect to see lots more of these China-Korea projects at a GM dealer near you, wherever in the world you may be. More »
