Chrysler's latest survival scheme? Fancy toys in budget models. It used to be, that if you wanted heated seats and other fancy interior amenities in your Chrysler Sebring or Dodge Avenger, you had to plop down more cash for the 3.5-liter V6-equipped models. Now, as the company struggles to stay afloat amid high gas prices and a weak economy, it's rethinking that approach and now looking to offer high-spec in its four cylinder models and dropping the highest trim level as part of a plan they're calling "Fight Back." At what? Hit the jump for the answer. <a href="http://jalopnik.com/398815/chrysler-sebring-dodge-avenger-to-fight-back-with-better-trim-smaller-engines" title="Click here to read more about Chrysler Sebring, Dodge Avenger To "Fight Back" With Better Trim, Smaller Engines">More »

Chrysler and Mitsubishi have been technological partners for years, providing platforms and engines for each other even after Daimler dropped Mitsubishi a few years ago (now Chrysler hearts Nissan). The most notable models in recent memory were the Mitsubishi 3000GT/Dodge Stealth duo and the Plymouth Laser/Eagle Talon/Mitsubishi Eclipse 1G trio. By the time the venerable second generation Mitsubishi launched, Eagle and Plymouth were on the outs. Needing a sports coupe, they launched the Dodge Avenger on a lengthened 2G Eclipse platform. Apparently, one of our neighbors decided to make a commentary on this by combining the two in what is, we're told, not a completely unusual swap. More »

Mopar revealed a total of eight customized vehicles here at SEMA, and we've already shown a few of them like the Jeep JT concept and the Hemi-fied Wrangler. Here's another. It's a tricked out Dodge Avenger the folks at The New Chrysler call the "Stormtrooper." Somehow we find that name to be a bit of a bad choice by the Penastar brand — haven't they heard of the "Stormtrooper Effect?" Maybe they should have painted it black and named it the "Vader." And another note to Mopar — probably not the best idea to call your big 4.0-liter V6 a "velvet hammer." But maybe that's just us. Press release excerpt below the jump. <a href="http://jalopnik.com/317146/sema-2007-dodge-avenger-stormtrooper" title="Click here to read more about SEMA 2007: Dodge Avenger "Stormtrooper"">More »

Well, now we're all curious about The Forgotten Mopar, the Plymouth Cricket (aka Hillman Avenger), so we're digging a little deeper into its story. Turns out it's a long and complicated one, with plenty of weird twists and turns. For example, how about an Avenger with VW emblems slapped on and sold in Brazil as the Volkswagen Dodge 1500? We heart the Cricket now! [Rootes-Chrysler.co.uk] <a href="http://jalopnik.com/283382/cricket-avenger-no-the-volkswagen-dodge" title="Click here to read more about Cricket? After watching the '71 Plymouth Cricket ad yesterday, we got to wondering: how was it that the Cricket (which was a rebadged Hillman Avenger built by the Chrysler-owned Rootes Group) disappeared from America's roads without a trace? Has anyone here ever seen one? After all, Chrysler did sell a fair number of them here before the captive-import Colt took over their subcompact duties. Was the car that bad? Take a look at Allpar's Cricket page for their version of the story: [Allpar.com] More »

Reports of fires breaking out have Chrysler ready to send out letters to 2006 and 2007 Dodge Durango and Jeep Liberty owners. A faulty blower motor is the cause of the conflagrations, which evidently occur when the air conditioning is used during hot weather. Notices will go out to Durango owners in April and Liberty Owners in May. A third and much less flammable recall for Dodge Avenger door latch mechanisms will be issued as soon as Chrysler gathers enough of the replacement parts to make the repair. Over 489,000 vehicles are affected. So far the Durango is ahead in the burnout contest, with 66 reported fires versus only 16 for the Liberty. – Mike Bumbeck <a href="http://jalopnik.com/243520/fire-chrysler-to-issue-durango-and-liberty-recalls" title="Click here to read more about Fire!
Ad Watch: Can The Dodge Avenger Turn You Into Deep Purple, Batman Or A Salsa Dancer?

We'd heard initially the Dodge Avenger campaign might be something more hoontastic, so we already knew we'd be a bit disappointed by the campaign no matter how good it ended up. However, even through the disappointment, we tried to do our level best to keep our minds on a level playing field. Still, despite the attempts at mustering the positive energy, we couldn't get all that jacked up about this Sebring clone. Of the three ads, the best one's got to be the one above, which is called "tuned up" is supposed to "illustrate the fun that's available from Avenger's 3.5-liter V-6 engine and six-speed Auto Stick transmission." All it really ends up doing in our mind is illustrating how much better looking the sheet "metal" looks on the Avenger than it does on the Sebring, and that "Smoke On The Water" can't be done justice with the sounds emanating from a 3.5-liter V6 engine. But that's just the first ad. The second two, found below the jump, are not much better. The first one, "superhero," is supposed to illustrate how you can be "Batman" to your kid. The third ad, which like all non-truck commercials targeting the Hispanic community, is called "passion," and is supposed to illustrate how you can have salsa dancers dance for you if you buy a Dodge Avenger. At least that's what we think it's supposed to do. Anyway, the press release for the clone-of-Sebring's also below. – Ray Wert More »

The history of the Hillman Avenger is long, sordid and involves Chrysler, Peugeot and Volkswagen. And while some of the rally/saloon variants were pretty rad, the Avenger variant that simply cannot be fronted upon is the Uruguay-built Dodge 1500 pickup. Sadly, not much thought was given to the structural integrity of this South American truckcar and the vehicles apparently had a propensity toward chassis failure. Still, unlike its American cousin, the Rampage, the 1500 was at least driven by the correct wheels. We'd like to find one, beef it up, and add Plymouth Cricket bodywork and a 4G63 turbo, thus making it a Phantom Scamp GT. Would there be a more playatastic way to roll through Montevideo? We highly doubt it. – Davey G. Johnson <a href="http://jalopnik.com/240819/avengermino-the-dodge-1500-pickup" title="Click here to read more about Avengermino! Any press release containing the words "Building on our successful launch on the 2007 Chrysler Pacifica" has a bit of a credibility problem. Fortunately, BorgWarner's spinmeisters aren't talking about the Pacifica itself. They're lauding the front wheel all-wheel drive system currently underpinning [dust collecting] upmarket examples of DCX's proto-CUV. ITM 3e is the first all wheel-drivery to reduce power to the rear wheels at highway speeds to improve fuel economy. It's yet another clever gizmo from the boffins who bring you the world's best paddle shifter (DSG). Anyway, this press release on BorgWarner's alphanumeric festival of torque-managed traction control tells us their grip-securing gee-whizzery will now migrate to the 2007 Sebring and 2008 Avenger. DCX aversive buyers needn't feel excluded; the company also sells its greasy bits to Ford, VW/Audi, DaimlerChrysler, General Motors, Toyota, Renault/Nissan, Hyundai/Kia, Honda, Caterpillar and Peugeot. – Robert Farago More »

The blog at Cars.com obsessed with breaking toes on hard black rubber and chrome had pricing info on the latest mid-size sedan from the 'merican side of the German-American hybrid dropped into it's lap. And although pricing info on the SE trim level of the Dodge Avenger was announced at the Detroit Auto Show — pricing on the other trim levels wasn't <strike>really cared about</strike> yet available. Luckily for those interested in not-so-budget-priced mid-size sedans, Cars.com appears to have snagged all the info from the maws of the half-teutonic beast. The shooters at KGP have snapped shots of a crossover vehicle we've heard is code-named JC49 — it's a vehicle which will supposedly be built on the frame of the new Sebring/Avenger platform. Where what we've heard has diverged from what others are saying is on what market the new CUV (plus its potential Chrysler-branded cousin, which apparently has a similarly alphanumeric name — the JZ49) is heading for. The people at the ever-curvaceous Road claim it's meant to fight off the Toyota Highlander and Ford Edge on these shores — but we've heard it's to be built out of the Toluca, Mexico plant that's currently building PT Cruisers, and that it's meant to fight MPV's from a broad-range of competitors across the pond in Europe. It may be part of the Chrysler Group's plans to fight them over there while making cars that aren't selling over here — or something like that. – Ray Wert More »

Rumors abound on the internets of an imminent announcement at some showcase of autos of a change in status from "concept" to "production" of the Dodge Avenger shown at the Paris Auto Show. Just as with any vehicle in the Dodge stable, there's expectation of an R/T version, and as I saw today on my way over to the DaimlerChrysler Tech Center in Auburn Hills, Mi for an event I can't talk about as well as can't explain why — I noticed this little black n' chrome assembled Avenger R/T making it's way onto the hallowed grounds of the HQ for the 'merican side of the German-American hybrid. If the R/T shares the same "high-end" engine found in it's badge-engineered cousin, you'll more than likely find a 3.5-liter V6 sitting inside the engine compartment when you lift the hood. Full gallery below of the ass-end and a bit o' chrome from the front. – Ray Wert More »

Take the body kit off the Dodge Avenger concept and what do you get? If you said "my next rental at Dallas—Fort Worth" you'd be partially right. It's the production Dodge Avenger, caught testing ahead of the Detroit auto show, where it's expected to debut ahead of a quickie rush to dealers by early '07. If you've been in a wormhole for the past year, you may not know the Avenger is the Stratus replacement and cousin of the new Chrysler Sebring. Don't worry sport-o, an R/T version is planned. – Mike Spinelli More »

Production of two new vehicles was confirmed in a memo to dealers of the 'merican side of the German-American hybrid this week, obtained by Katie Merx of the Freep. The first, the Dodge Avenger, which was introduced in Paris this year as a "concept car" or "prototype" (depending on who you asked in Auburn Hills — of course a second later they'd then say "off the record, of course, you do know we're building it?") is reported to begin production in January at the Sterling Heights, MI plant also housing the manufacturing line for it's badge-engineered brother car, the Chrysler Sebring. In addition, the memo also confirms the date of September 1st as the start of the production of those twin towers of sales superpower, the Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans (which, as you remember, we snapped some exclusively bedecked in fascia-obscura spy shots of) — and that the lines would stop on the current model minivan in mid-May. – Ray Wert <a href="http://jalopnik.com/216889/avenger-to-be-assembled-dodge-dealer-memo-confirms-production-of-new-sedan-minivan" title="Click here to read more about Avenger To Be Assembled! As part of its press push in advance of the Dodge Avenger's introduction at the Paris show, Dodge produced a video mini-doc on the design process behind the new midsized proto-Dodge. They take a look at how a few clever styling tricks like a "boxing glove feel" like a "powerful...tiger" may save the Avenger from rental-car hell, or at least boost it upward a ring or two. More »

Dodge let fly with the official Avenger concept pics this morning, showing off the prototype sedan that will become the company's new midsized entry. As we mentioned, the concept is heading to the Paris show to introduce Europe to a model its citizens will see in their local forecourts sometime in 2008 — in continuance of Chrysler's continental invasion. It's a front driver and it'll likely to share fours and sixes (and a CRD oil burner for Europe) with its Dodge Caliber and Chrysler Sebring sibling when it arrives in 2007 as a 2008 model. Otherwise, details to follow in paree. Here it is, courtesy of the embargos-be-damned Carscoop: It's the Dodge Avenger Concept set to be unveiled at the Paris show later this month. It seems the Dodge boys are planning to save the real introduction for the Detroit show in early 2007, so the Paris Avenger (starring Maurice Chevalier) will technically be a prototype. Still, it'll be a concept in the loosest definition, as we hear the production version coming in mid-to-late 2007 will be nearly identical. Stay tuned for tech specs. More »

When the PR team atop Dieter's head at the NorAm world HQ of the German-American hybrid realizes that there's been pictures of some new Mopar goodness leaked all over the interwebs, trust us — someone'll pay — especially since it's well before the supposed release at this year's Paris Auto Show at the end of the month. But if they're looking for a culprit, they'll probably want to start with Name Already In Use over at the SRT Forums, who snapped pictures of what appears to be the new 2008 Dodge Avenger R/T, completely in the nude sans any fascia-obscuring clothing. Bare that crossbar with pride, Avenger — especially considering how many Bothans died to get us your pictures after the jump. More »

Thanks to our buddy Evan, who spied a prototype of the 2007 <strike>Dodge Avenger</strike> Chrysler Sebring prototype in big, bad Bloomfield Hills, Michigan headed westbound at around 50 mph on something called Square Lake Road, just after exiting I-75 south (way to rock the log book, man). Evan whipped out his Sony Ericsson w800i 2mp camera and gunned for the Dodge boy with fingers blazing. Despite the eye-jamming dress-up, he caught a pretty clear few pictures of the Caliber's bigger brother that's coming next year. More after the jump. [UPDATE: The Mopar experts at AllPar say's it's the Chrysler Sebring, not the equally expected Dodge Avenger. We'll go with that. And don't even think of blaming Evan; it's our fault.] More »

We hope the boys at Allpar will excuse our neglect (geek excuse: we switched RSS readers, and dropped their feed somehow). But just because we're a few days late doesn't mean we can ignore a shot of what may be the next-generation Dodge Avenger, looking very Dodge-like in new grill and redesigned body. One of the site's readers spotted this shot in a Chrysler video presentation, and froze it (there's also a rear view). Mopar experts believe it's the next Avenger due (along with the Dodge Stratus and Chrysler Sebring) for the 2007 model year. Oh yes, it's quite an improvement. More »

Toyota Camrys, watch your backs! Dodge's new Avenger may be on the scene, ready to cause a violent difference of opinion in the midsized car segment. A reader at GM InsideNews spotted what could be the (masked) Avenger at a filling station, readying itself for several thousand miles of note-taking by engineers. We were expecting it to come out in 2007, but there's no word from Chrysler as yet, so maybe 2008 is more likely. Dodge won't pin the Stratus badge on its next-generation midsize sedan. Instead, it will reportedly go with Avenger, a name that badged a Dodge sport coupe during the late 1990s. Dodge also chose the Avenger name for the 2003 concept vehicle (pictured), which introduced the world to the new, car-truck design direction that will launch with the 2007 Caliber. We're not sure what form the Avenger's revenge will take (and on whom? Toyota Camrys?), but if car-on-car tire slashings rise in the midsize segment, we'll have a suspect. More »
