Christmas dreams for a Pep Boys regional accessory manager aren't about sugarplums or shiny bicycles: they're about taking an underadorned car and putting things right. Which means plastering a serious pile of cheap plastic crap onto something like a defenseless Miata. More »

Let's say you're looking for a way to spice up the tail-end of pickup truck and regular truck nutz just don't do it for you. Perhaps something more tasteful and yet more flashy — literally. Enter BrakeNutz, a clear set of polycarbonate Nutz with dual-element LEDs inside. Those strategically placed lights are wired to mimic brake lights when properly installed into your cars or trucks wire harness. Guess that's one way to legally flash your nutz at someone. Whether you're a fan of digital gauges or not, you no doubt remember their prevalence during the glorious 1980s. Everything from the Dodge Daytona Shelby Z to the Nissan 300ZX Turbo to the Chevy C4 Corvette complemented the era's best futuristic vehicle design with digital gauges. Motive Magazine highlighted some of the best, with accompanying videos to demonstrate the awesomeness. Our favorite? Definitely the Buick Riviera with iPhone-rivaling touchscreen media controls. A company by the name of AUO has managed to develop an oval-shaped LCD display, which could change the appearance of next-generation instrument panels. The ovoid LCDs don't just look good, but they could allow for customizing instrumented data. Of course, the technology is far from being integrated into your next vehicle purchase, but it's good to see the baby steps being taken. A young chap is selling completely authentic European customized license plates. You can get any combination you like pressed into the plate of your country of choice — and even add authentic registration stickers. We'd probably avoid purchasing one if you do actually live in a European country, since it's completely illegal. Even the product description seems a bit shady, involving the store owner "knowing a guy." More »

Mercedes-Benz is getting hip with the youngsters by announcing that it will support the Apple iPhone by way of a center-console mounted cradle. The good news about this is that the switching between audio and telephone functions seems to be pretty seamless using the center display and steering-wheel controls. The bad news is that the iPhone's dock is in the center console, between the seats. Even if all of the interface controls can be operated using the vehicle's controls, having the phone in the center console still makes it a pain in the ass to easily remove and replace. Oh, and forget about using the iPhone's GPS. Full release after the jump. More »

In an attempt to help your FM transmitter "blend into your car's dashboard," Green House has produced and released a pretty simple FM transmitter that looks like a shift-knob. It plugs into the standard 12V DC power outlet and includes an audio jack for plugging in an MP3 player and a USB port for charging supported devices. The real hilarious hijinks come when you accidentally try to aggressively shift with this device and tear the hell out of your dash. That, or you put it in a vehicle with a "three on the tree" and confuse the hell out of the driver. We can already imagine the LOLs. Using an iPod or iPhone in a car is going to be that much easier thanks to the latest round of goods from Griffin Technology. The WindowSeat is an oddly named, but simple gadget. It's a suction windshield mount for the iPhone or iPod Touch. If the next generation iPhone gets some legitimate GPS, this will be a nice $30 accessory to have. The other new goody is the iTrip AutoPilot. The AutoPilot is a glorified FM transmitter and charger for the iPod that connects via the standard dock connection of almost every iPod and will broadcast tunes over FM. It includes a 12V DC adapter with play, pause, forward and backward controls for the iPod or iPhone. It also includes a SmartScan feature to find the best FM station for transmission and has SmartSound Plus technology for clearer sound. The iTrip AutoPilot is available for $100. This post is dedicated to the residents of the second best state in the continental United States: California. You folks only have a little over a month left until the handsfree type of devices are required by law so we're here to help you get ready for that with some viable options for continued chatter. One option is this Bluetooth handsfree visor car kit. This device clips to the visor and acts as a speakerphone and microphone all rolled into one. What makes it stand out from the usual lot of Bluetooth handsfree speakerphones is the inclusion of an LCD screen to act as a caller ID. That way you can avoid those calls from your boss while driving. For those non-Californians, you can still enjoy this device as well. Hell, there's a chance that a handsfree-law is already in place for your state. This portable handsfree Bluetooth kit is available for $100. Or save the $100 and don't talk on the phone while driving. Any AutoX'er can testify that the Nissan 300zx is one heck of a fun car to drive. With that being said, we're baffled that one particular Boston 1991 Nissan 300zx owner would feel the need to install a 15-inch LCD screen right in the view of the windshield. Sure, there's space to the left and right to, you know, see the road and all, but in some states hanging cardboard pine trees from the rear-view mirror is deemed illegal and we'd hate to see what the police had to say about this ridiculous mod. Nevertheless, it could be yours for $5,000. More »

Believe it or not, there are other uses for trailer hitches than hanging testicles... like gravel driveway grooming. One item many forget to mention about having gravel driveways is the maintenance required. The Driveway Groomer is a simple device that can attach to the rear towing hitch on any vehicle, therefore turning your soccer-mom mobile into a workhorse by allowing it to groom and maintain that gravel driveway of yours. The Driveway Groomer sells for $350, with a miniature version going for $265. For those that just can't get green enough, here comes a new accessory that will make your Prius even more deadly. The SEV Solar Roof Module is essentially that. What makes this vehicular solar panel a bit better than the average bear is the fact that it installs seamlessly onto the Toyota Prius roof. The entire roof-panel is replaced with these solar cells and can provide 20 miles of electric range as well as upward of 29-percent increased fuel efficiency. This module is capable of fitting 2004 through 2006 Prius models. Watch out, deaf kids! There's no reason to dismantle your vehicle or upholstery to install in-car entertainment systems, all you have to do is be creative, like with this car visor, which houses a 7-inch 16:9 widescreen LCD. Included is a DVD player and a video game console. The DVD player is capable of playing the whole lot of formats including DVD, SVCD, VCD, DVCD, CD, CDG, CD-R and CD-RW. Not only can it play videos, but it includes ports to plug in game controllers for some video game fun. There will be no Gran Turismo or Grand Theft Auto IV, but it does have a selection of 8-bit games capable of entertaining for at least one hour of that 20 hour road-trip with the family. The best feature is its ease-of-use. More »

Despite the owner's manual for the Nissan GT-R strictly forbidding it, a Japanese company has gone ahead and released a carbon fiber kit for Godzilla himself, defying everything Nissan stands for this with vehicle. Arios is the company behind this mess. Despite it not being a giant wing or massive fender flairs, the inclusion of carbon fiber front and sideskirts is enough to make every Nissan designer crap their pants, simultaneously. Along with the kit, Arios offers to swap the new GT-R front emblem with the older one from the Skyline GT-R KPCG10. Please. Researchers at Lehigh University are developing a way to make it easier for wheelchair-bound individuals to dock a wheelchair in the back of a minivan. The system utilizes lasers and radio frequency technology to automatically guide a wheelchair onto the forklift-style platform that is in the rear of the van. This is similar to how the spacecraft Jules Verne docked with the International Space Station or how my Roomba robotic vacuum will automatically dock with its charging cradle. More »

Toyota has recently announced a partnership with iBiquity, which will put HD Radio systems in a variety of Scion vehicles. What makes this partnership even funnier is the PR-speak Toyota used to announce the partnership.
"Since Scion customers are in tune with audio technology, it makes sense that we enhance our already outstanding audio offerings for them," said Jason Adang, Accessory Audio and Electronics Planning Manager, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. "Digital HD Radio technology is ideal for our youthful, tech-savvy customers who will enjoy the wide range of content available on HD Radio channels."
Toyota hasn't gotten that hint that HD Radio is floundering, big time. This whole marketing thing is pretty new to Scion, as well. More »

Just when the cheesy and flashy auto customization market couldn't get any worse, a company with a horrible name like Sweetskinz has come out with artistic tires. If anything positive were to come from Sweetskinz, its the increased tire visibility, which is something maybe one person, somewhere in the world, may be interested in having. Other than that, these are pretty lame. More »

Forget about the complicated tire pressure monitoring systems integrated into luxury cars, the P-eye makes the task of checking your tire's pressure simple, very simple. It's a cap for the tire that will blink red when the tire is 5-percent below its recommended pressure. The system does have a flaw, albeit a minor one. More »

The days and age of fuzzy dice hanging from the rear-view mirror is pretty much done and we can all agree that it was lame to begin with in anything but a rusting Jersey Cadillac. Luckily, with the plenty of 12V DC outlets available in vehicles nowadays we have a new type of dice accessory: illuminated plastic dice! More »

Today's episode of Auto Branding Adventures sees a new challenger join the fray: Land Rover. Land Rover has gone and slapped its name on 40 different models of sunglasses and eye wear. Like traditional Land Rover design, the sunglasses are pretty flat and boxy. More »

We've been seeing GPS navigation veer away from the traditional dash- or windshield-mounted form factor, like with the rear-view mirror, but now we have the Takara CSW steering wheel that includes the navigation built directly into the steering wheel. Unfortunately, it's not a big, pretty LCD screen, but rather a monochrome display that will give information like turn left, veer right, etc. More »

The Spirit of Ecstasy, the Rolls Royce mascot, recently received a limited edition makeover for the New York Auto Show, and how we missed it, we just don't know. But anyway, it's a Rolls, so you expect it to cost a pretty penny, right? Well, how about 20,000,000 of them. Yes, this ornamental accessory for hood adornment will set you back $200,000. That is if you can buy one. This one-of-a-kind hood add-on was commissioned by Manhattan Motorcars and is encrusted with 150 carats of d-quality diamonds. More »

The latest auto accessory to come out of Switzerland is — well, it's simply Divine. No, really — it's called Divine and it's a wax brought to you by the friendly people at SWIZÖL. Also, did we mention it costs 1,800 €, which translates to about $2,750 in Dubya-bucks? Seriously. And why wouldn't it cost that much given it's a wax formulated to match the exact color and type of paint the buyer provides to the company upon order? Not surprisingly, the Divine is what we'll call "exclusive." It's so "exclusive," you get a certificate of authenticity with your two jars of the stuff. Oh, and the certificates come on individually numbered and named plaques. More »

The problem of brake lights not distinguishing between gingerly slowing down and rapidly stopping is now being addressed. Researchers at Virginia Tech University are developing smart brake lights. The intelligent braking lights will have a series of LEDs that will distinguish when someone is easing off the speed or slamming on the brakes. How the system works is surprisingly simple. More »

The DS-400GB is a new solution to the problem of dash clutter—you know—when you have Bluetooth modules, navigation units, backup camera displays and more all over the dash. This device takes all of those goods and integrates it into the rear-view mirror. The right side of the rear-view mirror is sectioned off as the GPS navigation unit and display for a back-up camera. More »

Chrysler claims it will begin offering in-car Internet access later this year. It's a little more complicated and confusing than just magically putting a chip into a car that gets Internet access anywhere, unfortunately. Chrysler said that the service will work by utilizing a broadband connection from cell phone towers. Thus, a partnership would have to be reached between Chrysler and one of the major cell phone carriers to get this to work correctly, and such a partnership is unknown at this time. More »

It's about time to retire the old-fashioned jumper cables in favor of other devices, like the Porta-Jump. Who wants big, gaudy cables taking up all of the room in your trunk when you can use this Rubik's Cube sized device to provide plenty of juice to a dead car battery. It comes fully charged and can fit in any nook or cranny of your car. Just plug it into the 12V DC outlet and fire up your car and make that stupid mistake of leaving your lights on all night just...go away. More »

We've seen some pretty interesting mods around these parts, but this 110cc quad toolbox has to be one of the more peculiar. I hate to jump to conclusions or make assumptions, but this is really just a 110cc miniature quad sawed in half and welded back to a pretty standard toolbox. The owner says it is used in the pits to easily get the tools around. Yeah, I'll go ahead and say the creators are lazy and creative. Tag Heuer has announced a pair of glasses called "Night Vision," designed with the driver in mind. First off, these aren't night vision. Night vision is something worn by covert ops in badass espionage flicks. These are low-light glasses. The glasses have been optimized for driving at night thanks to some engineering that corrects low-light and short-sightedness situations that usually occur in evening driving. More »
