Eschewing trite teaser images, Audi has instead given us some actual eye candy, providing official design sketches of four upcoming models: the A5 Cabrio and Sportback, the all-new 2010 A7 four-door coupe and the 2011 A8 sedan. While the A5 Cabrio looks pretty much like a topless A5 coupe, the A5 Sportback is unique for not looking at all like a traditional sportback model, instead bearing resemblance to notchbacks of yore. The A7 brings TT-esque styling to the burgeoning four-door coupe market, while the revised A8, at least in sketch form, looks just about tough as hell. Take a look for yourself in the gallery below. This Audi A7 mule was spied in Germany, but not ripping up the Nürburgring like you would expect. Rather, it was too busy bouncing off guardrails on a small country road located just off the racing circuit. It appears that the accident didn't involve any other vehicles (or any biodiesel), and the driver is said to be fine, but we can't be sure as to whether or not it was caused by a faulty component on the car or old-fashioned driver error. What is clear are the skid marks drawing a line straight into the left side guardrail— and then across the the road to the other guardrail. Looks like he must have been going pretty fast around that slippery sweeping turn. Oh well, at least Audi sent a trailer to drag it back home. More »

Looking like your Great Aunt Edna in a flowing muumuu, the 2009 Audi A7 camouflaging strategy has taken a turn for the hilarious. Instead of the traditional "tape and blocks," or "crazy looking vinyl decals," Audi has decided on "giant brown tarp with holes cut in it" as the easiest way to keep prying eyes off its new coupe/saloon. Looks like the Audi A5 isn't the only one stirring things up lately. WorldCarFans has posted spy photos they claim to be the long (looooong) rumored Audi A7. Their spy shots look like a test mule wearing an A6 suit that's a little bit too small but we still like what we see. The track is stretched a bit as is the wheelbase, the interior is very reminiscent of the A8 but sports a revised dash and *gasp*, a cloth interior. That probably won't be making it into US production models (whenever that happens). More »

They started with the Audi R8 targa and A1, now the UK's Car magazine is completing its sketchy trifecta with a drawing of what could be the Audi A7. They say an insider smuggled the art from Audi's design studio in Ingolstadt, (though there's little information verifying the images' veracity). Nonetheless, the A7 is Audi's answer to coupish four-door models like the Mercedes CLS and coming Porsche Panamera, with an expected sleek, swoopy body shape and mechanicals lifted from the next A6. Car says the A7 will be fitted with a new steering rack, multilink suspension and a quattro system that's biased to the rear — a much-anticipated novelty that may put a damper on Audis' notorious understeer. Under the hood will be the usual suspects: 3.0-liter six and 4.2-liter eight, and an expected S7 will likely get the typical Lambo-derived V10, though speculation extends to an RS7 with a twin-turbo ten banger. No Audi's not done deriving new models, considering there are still a couple of counting numbers it hasn't yet appropriated. For instance, it's been a year since we've heard anything new about the coming Audi A7/S7, a new coupeish four-door set to challenge the Mercedes CLS by 2009. Ditto for the Q5 small SUV. Now, German news outlets are reporting on the company's raft of new badges it's rolling out in its quest to be a major luxury player. The A7's expected to hit in 2009 for the 2010 model year. It'll be built on the same platform as the A8 and offer a range of engines including the Lambo-derived V10 for the S7 model. MotorAuthority offers a rendering of what it could look like. Spies caught an extreme close-up of that Audi test mule recently spotted circling the N rburgring. This time, it was caught braving the Death Valley heat. Outwardly, there's nothing new to report, but covert vehicular agents whipped out a ruler and confirmed the Audi's wheelbase is slightly shorter than that of the A6, which Edmunds Inside Line interprets as evidence the mule hides the underpinnings of a new model, the A7, which will be of the "four-door coupe" variety.
