We knew it was on the way, but the Cross-Wheel-Drive system which debuted on the 2008 Saab 9-3 Turbo X has been made available across the rest of the 9-3 lineup for 2009. The Haldex-sourced system provides on-demand all-wheel drive which can be shifted to the wheel with the greatest grip on the fly. XWD equipped cars start at $34,870 for a 9-3 2.0T XWD Sport Sedan to a starting price on the 9-3 Aero V6T XWD SportCombi of $43,165. Detroit: (pronounced /dɪˈtrɔɪt/) A place subject to automatic ridicule from anyone who has never been to the Motor City. Frankly, this ridicule is becoming tiresome. The idea of a vibrant, interesting, exciting Midwestern city is somehow divorced from this 300 year old berg. The complete discounting of Detroit is a shame of culture and possibility. Certainly, Detroit has its problems, but that betrays the underlying coolness that is this place. We just got the press release from the company selling off the sons and daughters of jets — and Saab's '07 US lineup has a starting price of $26,915 with a top out at $43,120. Although it may seem it's a few grand higher than the 2006 pricing entry point of $23,710 — it's really about the same, because that was including the 9-2 model, which as the release notes, was discontinued cause the General sold off its share of Fuji Heavy Industries. The UK's AutoExpress speculates on a future Saab 9-5 based on the designs introduced in its Aero X concept at the Geneva Show earlier this year. Be careful, says Trollhattan Saab — AE doesn't have the best track record for speculative accuracy. Still, they say, the spec images (pictured) appear similar to those that showed up in Germany's more reliable Auto Motor und Sport last month, and in a backdrop illustration at a speech by GM Europe's design boss Brian Nesbitt. We do hear that the next 9-5 will be heavily informed by the design direction introduced with the Aero X, so expect a pretty considerable dollop of Aeroness. Stay tuned. More »

Saab's new microsite hammers home the idea that, despite being spawned by a division by GM, Saab cars are GODDAMN SWEDISH. GET IT? How do they do it? For one, they've got a slick multimedia feature that lets viewers see the new 9-5 and SportCombi wagon from the perspective of some of the animals found in the country of SWEDEN, like the moose, the Redd Foxx red fox and the herring eagle owl. Just a quick word on Saab's late-cycle freshening of its 9-5 flagship, ahead of its complete redesign for 2008. It doesn't look like much in the photos, but the aggressive new face and a tasteful posterior tapering have done a lot for the fiver. It looks like a proper sport coupe now, and even (at some angles) evokes a time when Saab's designs were far more distinctive. (Wither the 99 Turbo?) Still, the best an enthusiast can hope for is the 260hp Aero version, which makes it kind of a weak-limbed player on a competitive performance field. But greenies will make up for the love lack, as the company will offer a bi-power (gasoline or ethanol) engine in some markets. More »
