Is there a "gay" car? The folks at Gaywheels say if you're in LA the answer is "yes!" with the most fabulous of all being the BMW 7-Series. Because BMW is nothing if not punctual, the company's already doing outdoor tests of a refresh to the 7 Series expected for the 2013 model year. Last year, sales of BMW's midsize sedan hit 5.5 million. The outgoing 5er, known as the E60, represented the car's fifth generation. I have at least five personal stories to tell about the 5-series. Coincidence? In 1994 BMW dropped all six-cylinder engines for the 7-series in favor of the V8/V12 power needed to haul their bloated-by-features luxobarges. Now, inline-six fans rejoice! BMW's Motorsport division said it would never tune an SUV, yet they've gone back on their word on that one. I was scoping BMWs at the Half Price Sale at a local self-service wrecking yard on Thanksgiving weekend, looking for a good long battery cable from a trunk-mounted-battery model (so's I could get the race car rigged with the battery cutoff switch now mandated by 24 Hours Of LeMons rules), and something about this one jumped out at me. Hey, that engine has way more cylinders than most! Yes, it's a BMW V12, and it was working well enough to drive the car to its final wreck. Someone needs to put this powerplant in a Chevy Nova!
BMW rolled out the red carpet for the debut of the new 2009 BMW 7-Series and BMW Concept 7-Series ActiveHybrid, both driving across the carpet under power of BMW's twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8. The difference is while the 2009 7-Series moved with the force of 400 HP and 450 lb-ft of torque, the 7-Series ActiveHybid had an additional 20 HP and 155 lb-ft of torque on tap thanks to the addition of an electric motor. The former will go on sale early next year while the latter is but a concept, though one we believe is close to the design of a future BMW hybrid. Press releases and live photos below. More »

Ahead of its official reveal at the LA Auto Show, the official details on the BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid have finally been released after months of us sitting on the edges of our seats, waiting with bated breath. The ActiveHybrid (as opposed to the other name considered, "LazyHybrid") is a "preview of potential" for things to come from BMW and shows off a mild hybrid operating from a motor integrated transmission, which was jointly developed with Chrysler and General Motors. The motor "assists" a 400 HP, 450 lb-ft, 4.4 liter V8 with its own 20 HP and 155 lb-ft of torque providing oil barons with cognitive dissonance the feel-good benefit of 15% better fuel economy. Complete details in an uncompromisingly self satisfied press release below. More »

The next generation 7-Series has officially arrived, though if you've been paying attention you've already seen the 2009 BMW 7-series and therefore know that the design team has gone to great effort to correct the car's awkward-looking posterior. A new twin-turbocharged, direct-injection 4.4-liter V8 manages 400 HP and 450 lb-ft of torque, which should make the chauffeur happy. If you find yourself behind the wheel there's a plethora of technology to keep you from killing yourself including Active Cruise Control, Active Blind Spot Detection, BMW Night Vision and cameras on the side and rear of the luxo-yacht. The new 7-series is also the first BMW with a multi-link double-wishbone front suspension. It's something to think about on the way to the appointment with your increasingly distressed stock broker. More »

Remember the blatantly overpriced Neiman Marcus BMW 7-Series? Well the Today Show figured the $160,000 car, of which just 31 examples will be made, was important enough to feature on their program, you know, to provide a relevant shopping tip for all the people struggling through the Financiapocalypse. Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. There's been no shortage of BMWs in this series, but I've sort of overlooked the 5 and 7 series cars so far. No more! Today we'll look at one of the last of the E23s, a somewhat scuffed but still proud 735i, located in the post-late-50s landfill part of town, not far from the '66 Dodge A100 Sportsman.

Christmas may be months away, but Neiman Marcus has just released their holiday shopping catalog — which, of course, means an overpriced limited-edition luxury car has also been revealed. Following on the heels of last year's Lexus IS F and 2006's 2007 BMW M6 Convertible, this year they'll be offering up the new 2009 BMW 7-Series. Oh joy. Just 31 examples will receive the NM treatment of Champagne Merino leather, Alcantara headliner, and Diopside Black paint. Really though, is there any other way to celebrate the holidays besides buying a $160,000 status symbol? Full catalog description after the jump. More »

Though there was some speculation that the 2009 BMW 7-Series might be undergoing a radical refresh, the actual 2009 7-Series is a mostly underwhelming update. The rear of the car has been mercifully revised. The rest of the big Bimmer has undergone a more subtle transformation — especially subtle in light of the 7-series sketches released by BMW today. More »

Although we showed you the new 2009 BMW 7-Series in all of its unofficial glory on Thursday. Well, now we've got the official details from BMW, and we've included the full press release for the new 7-Series after the jump. Sure, focus all you want on the horsepower (407 HP in the 750i and 750Li, 326 HP in the 740i and 740Li) or the torque (600 Nm of torque in the 750i and 750Li, 450 Nm of torque in the 740i and 740Li) or even the 155 MPH electronically-limited top speed, but the one thing that's sticking out in our minds is the new "individual pedestrian recognition" night vision system. That's right, the new BMW 7 will tell you when there's a person walking in front of the car, even at mid-double-digit speeds. See, there's a little icon of a person and everything. We're just wondering whether there's a similar icon for moose, deer or other woodland creatures. We'll have to see once we get behind the wheel ourselves in rural Michigan. More »

After teasing us with the new 2009 BMW 7-series, BMW's finally revealed the new 7 via an early leak of press photos to the web. After throwing everything at us from a flowbee-equipped mule to the teaser at the German golf outing, they've tossed the next 7-series at us in every way possible but with the kitchen sink. Every time, it's been nothing but a tease. Well, except for that purported leaked press shot. But somehow these small press photos have wiggled their way out onto the web and we've managed to snap 'em up.

While en route to a swinging bachelor party, AutoFiend's editor came upon a 2009 BMW 7-Series testing along the road to Las Vegas (generally a much happier drive than the ride home). This time the 7-series is mostly uncamouflaged and lacking in the Flowbee package; also, it looks as though someone has squirted a bit of water on the flame surfacing relative to the previous generation. According to our friends over at Pistonheads, the best place to get a gander at what the new 2009 BMW 7-Series looks like isn't by setting up a tripod on the Nurburgring or by chatting up the forum fan-boys. Nope, it's heading over to EBay where apparently the front bumper for the next generation F01 BMW 7-Series has popped up on the auction site and is now going for a not-so-hefty 5 Euros. We've no idea if the seller is yanking our chain, but if they are, the joke's pretty damn funny. Now only if someone could tell us where to find our Flowbee package. One more pic from the reverse after the jump. More »

The Italian Stallions over at the Mediterranean version of the blog about autos caught these photos of a disguised 2009 BMW 7-series while cruising down the autostrada. We'd like to think they were wearing a yellowed wife beater, gold medallion, driving a mid-'90s Panda and gesticulating wildly while they took them, which would help explain why they're so fuzzy. Expect the new 7-series to be introduced at the 2008 Paris Motor Show with Concept CS-aping looks. We've seen BMW's 2009 7-series in this sort of trippy camo before, but this time the Bavarians to have toned it down a couple notches. Though we are kind of disappointed this tester isn't equipped with the Flowbee package. Look past the swirly camouflage and you can see the car has a crisper, sharper look compared to the current model. As expected, there appears to be a degree of styling influence from BMW's CS Concept. Of course we'll have to wait for the Paris Auto Show, where this new 7-Series is expected to be revealed, to see how it really looks. More »

Although readers to the site have long known BMW and Flowbee International were working on a partnership, with these spy photos we can finally show you definitive proof. That's right — the new 2009 BMW 7-series sedan will come with an exclusive optional Flowbee package. Yes, although driving and haircuts at the same time may seem like magic or something out of a dream — it's real and here's proof it's coming soon. No word yet on whether it will include the rumored "underbrush volumizer," "pet comb" or "hair spacer" attachments, but our sources tell us the package will cost just $59.95. Of course that doesn't include shipping and handling. Full spy report from KGP below the jump. More »

Only lightly camouflaged compared to prior spy photos of the new BMW 7-Series, this newly-caught 7-Series peeked out during what was allegedly a marketing team photo shoot in Melbourne, Australia. Thanks to the shots from CarPoint.com.au, you can see the new grille looks to have a strong resemblance to the CS Concept from the 2007 Shanghai Auto Show. We've been told the styling of the new big BMW has a totally different feeling than the current E65 model, making the car look visually slimmer and tighter. We'll have to see that to believe it given the current explosion in weight and size of every automaker's new models. Expect the new 7er to be officially unveiled no sooner than the Paris Motor Show this fall. Hmmmmm.... Commenter SLRSpeeshop just sent this in. And we have no idea either. Though we suppose the above is one way to deal with the E65's notorious Bangle butt. Looking only at the cobblestones, I'm thinking real. I'm also hoping real, as the world has way too few 4-door luxury 'aminos. Fingers crossed that its based on a 760iL and packing a V12. <a href="http://jalopnik.com/346038/bimmeramino-real-fake" title="Click here to read more about Bimmeramino: Real? During my last visit to a local self-service junkyard, I noticed far more than the usual number of expensive German cars from the 80s, mostly in non-wrecked condition. Has some threshold been reached, where such cars are no longer worth maintaining? Here's a handful of photos of an '80 633CSi ($32,825 new, $83,232 in 2007 dollars), an '84 633CSi ($40,705 new, $81,855 in 2007 dollars), and an '89 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL ($72,280 new, $121,789 in 2007 dollars). I must admit that I wondered- briefly- if that big Mercedes V8 would fit in a Crown Victoria's engine compartment. More »

Last we saw a 2009 BMW 7-Series prototype, it had the typical plastic body cladding, missing decals and blacked-out everything. This time, the lads at World Car Fans managed to get their hands on the new 7-series done up in perhaps the most creative camouflage we've yet seen (though we have to wonder if this is the best way to draw attention away from the car) Pictures of the boring camo'd version below:

Tomorrow at the LA Auto Show we'll be seeing the product of BMW's continued work with GM and the two divorced sides of what was once the German-American hybrid, Daimler and Chrysler — the Hemi Hybrids from Chrysler and GM's full-size GMT-900 hybrid SUV's. BMW's full-size SUV powered by the joint research between all of them knights of Teuton and the 'merican revolution of GM will be coming soon, but not expected to be revealed here in LA. But notice how I used the word "continued" — because an assumption can be made — based upon this here camo-ed up BMW 7-Series entering GM's Milford Proving Grounds — that the Global Hybrid Cooperation (GHC) between these three automakers is still going strong and now it appears they're working on some sedan systems. One of the traditions of the 24 Hours of LeMons race is the People's Curse award, in which participants vote for their least favorite car. The "winner" of this vote is then destroyed early in Day Two, and let that be a lesson to jerky drivers and/or cheating teams who spend far over the $500 limit on their cars! At the Altamont LeMons race a couple weeks back, the People's Curse award was bestowed upon this silver '97 BMW 7-series. The story was that the car was abandoned at the Orange County BMW dealership at which Poly Orchid Racing team members were employed, and was thus free. However, much grumbling ensued from members of teams who weren't able to obtain free V8-powered German übermobiles, with the results you see here. More »

First of all, thanks for all the great Workhorse Engine of the Day suggestions, everyone- we'll be working down the list, so keep the ideas coming and don't get upset if your favorite engine hasn't appeared yet. Today we're going over to Europe (thanks to the suggestion of PatrickAustin) to take a look at the venerable BMW M30 engine. Built in various displacements for nearly 30 years, the Bavarian über-six-banger powered a bunch of our favorite BMWs, ranging from our last DOTS BMW to the '94 730i. And while we're at it, we'd like to thank Wikipedia for boasting so many must-read engine pages that, once lured in, you might as well forget about working for the rest of the day. [Wikipedia] More »

With the Studebaker Weasel beating the bratwurst out of the Faun-Kraka in yesterday's poll, we've got the post-apocalyptic Hell Project thing pretty well sewn up for now. But what do you do if you're banking on the machinery of civilization continuing to grind on for the time being? You need to have a ride with style, so that you may drive it over the crushed bodies of your social inferiors on your journey to worship at the shrine of Mammon. You need a big, flashy BMW. In fact, you need a big flashy BMW with twelve cylinders! We've done V12 Jag Hell; now it's time for V12 BMW Hell! More »

What costs six figures, produces 516 lb-ft of torque and looks like something Chris Bangle once scribbled on a cocktail napkin? Exactly, it's the BMW 7-Series in Alpina B7 trim. And for a limited time, you can own one at an interest figure lower than that introductory, adjustable-rate number you got from the shady mortgage broker behind the train station. Of course, with your house now going on the forclosure block, you'll need a place to stay. May we recommend the Alpina B7, which for a limited time you can get at up to 60 months at 3.9 percent. And if you had any equity left in that pressboard Mc Mansion the bank now owns, you could cut your living expenses in half. If you already own a 6- or 7-Series BMW, you can opt for $3500 in cash back in lieu of the financing deal. That way, you can load the trunk with Top Ramen and hot sauce.
