Two workers were injured this morning as a car fell down a parking garage elevator shaft on the Upper East Side. It took an hour to rescue the driver, and we still don't know how the accident happened.
Both workers are in stable condition at the Cornell Medical Center, reports Gothamist, but neither the FDNY or the manager of this Hertz on 355 East 76th Street have provided an explanation how the car tumbled down the shaft.
It is uncommon, but people do walk into open elevator shafts. It's not impossible that the driver would just go straight in thinking the elevator was present.
If you have any information on the accident, please respond in Kinja below, or e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
