As far as pure name recognition goes, in his day (which stretched for two decades) Walter Cronkite was one of the best-known humans on earth. The genial, mustachioed news anchor was also a passionate amateur auto racer, finding some success in Northeast races in the Fifties and pulling the impressive double trick of both racing in and reporting on the Sebring 12 Hours in 1959, where he shared a Lancia Appia that finished fifth in class.
