The Overgrown Squalor of New Orleans' Abandoned Amusement Park

Six Flags New Orleans (formerly known as Jazzland) was completely flooded by Hurricane Katrina. Almost six years later, it remains closed, a victim of both humans and the elements. Here are some photos of what it looks like these days.

It's July 4th weekend and while many are taking advantage of the long weekend to visit amusement parks across this great nation of ours, Six Flags New Orleans is still in rubble. Located in the city's Ninth Ward—one of the rougher neighborhoods in Crescent City and one of the hardest hit by the hurricane—the site has a source of controversy since the storm. The city owns the plot of land and when Six Flags announced it had no plans to rebuild the park, the city tried to hold the company to its lease and force Six Flags to rebuild. It was later announced that a Nickelodeon-themed park would take its place. But as of May of this year, when these pictures were taken, that still hasn't happened.

Like many people—including videographer Teddy Smith—photographer Richard Thompson III was attracted to the site for the stark and depressing visuals of fun time gone bad. You can see more of his photos of the site here.
