Western Endurance Racing Championship this weekend

National Auto Sport Association's first race of the Western Endurance Racing Championship season begins this weekend and Jalopnik will bring you live coverage.

Rumor has it there is some sort of celebrity race or a Grand Prix happening this weekend in Long Beach, but you would never know it from the hardcore endurance teams getting ready for their race at Buttonwillow Raceway Park in Central California. The Western Endurance Racing Championship (WERC) starts its season with a three hour enduro into the darkness Saturday night with six classes and a smorgasbord of cars and teams competing.

From big-money teams in Porsche GT3s running the faster class (ES) to 24 Hours of LeMons and ChumpCar veterans running in the slow-as-hell "you're in the Porsche's way" class (E3). It will be interesting to see if the crap-can teams like Krider Racing have what it takes to compete with the big boys.

The WERC culminates with NASA's 25 Hours of Thunderhill race at the end of the year. Coverage of last year's 25 Hour event Survive the 25 can be seen on Speed Cast TV.
