Most people have trouble making direct requests, especially when it concerns romance or money. Rather than asking a friend to repay a debt they'll engage in an elliptical conversation wherein they'll ask related questions like "so, how is that lawnmower" or "geez, I seem to have less money in my account, isn't that weird?" This is the same way with courting. "So, do you have a boyriend/girlfriend?" It's a good self-defense mechanicsm because there's a plausible reason you could be asking other than just wanting some.
