President Obama's first choice for HHS Secretary, former-Senator Tom Daschle, just withdrew his name for the nomination. Daschle raised eyebrows by not reporting limo service on his taxes — making this old campaign commercial of Daschle driving himself to work hilariously ironic.
Truly, this advertisement for Daschle's 1986 senate re-election campaign has it all. It literally shows him driving by a limo and, essentially, scoffing at anyone who would drive around in one. Instead, Daschle is "sentimental" enough to drive an old, rusty Pontiac Ventura to work every day. Or maybe, as the narrator says, he's "just cheap" and won't fork over the change for a limo.
In his post-Senate career as, essentially, a health care lobbyist, he was paid millions and given a limousine and driver to take around town. He never reported this gift on his taxes and thus didn't pay taxes on them until this January. Maybe Daschle is still "just cheap."
