Totally Wicked Mercedes 500 SL Street Rod

    By John Coyle

Multi-colored body panels aside, this looks like a stock 500 SL, but there's a burly square-tube chassis and Corvette suspension under the Mercedes-Benz sheet metal. The eBay ad never mentions why the builder—who works full time for Jack Roush's NASCAR team—choose to hide that hardware under a German drop-top, but he's done one hell of a job. There's still plenty of work to be done here—it still needs paint, an interior and a powertrain—but as the ad points out, the lion's share of the work has already been done. Full description and tons more pics after the jump.

This is a custom built Mercedes 500 SL Street Rod. The car was built from scratch, all square tube frame, Corvette suspension, this car is a Street Rod, not a factory Mercedes. The body as you can see is a Roadster. The body is a R230, which is a 2003 to 2008 body style, the parts except for the frame and suspension are all Mercedes, all body parts are either new or used, this is not a regular Kit Car, and there are no fiberglass after market parts. This is a Pro Street Touring car. The rear suspension has been narrowed, and will except a 345/35/18 tire on a 18X12 rim, all tucked inside the factory wheel well. The front wheels are nicely tucked inside the wheel well's as well. The car is not finished, it is a project car. Once completed and inspected the car will be titled as a 2008 Custom Built Mercedes 500 SL Street Rod under the DMV's MVR-55 code. Then the DMV will assign the car with a special VIN number. So far $36,000 have been put into this car. The builder of this Street Rod is Marshall Race Cars of Charlotte, NC. Jay Marshall, the builder, works for a NASCAR Race team (Jack Roush) full time as a fabricator. He also has been building Drag Cars for years. His latest creation won the IHRA car of the year award for 2008. This unique custom dream car will be the envy of any car builder. It should be worth over $100,000 when finished. The hard work has already been done and it is in a rolling chasis phase. It's ready for paint and your selection of power. For more information feel free to call me at 407-716-1737.
