Our gadget-obsessed brothers at Gizmodo got us the scoop yesterday on Honda's Asimo taking a run at the job of conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra two nights ago. Little did we know Jalopnik friend of friends Fabrizio Costantini (check out his site — the man's a genius with a camera) was in charge of putting together a little video of the performance. Without further ado, here's Asimo the wonder robot. Enjoy.

Thank you Honda! Like I don't have enough to worry about...
bless Honda for having the decency to not slap a face on this thing!!
I think it's the coolest thing to come from Honda this side of the 1960's F1 effort. Of course I'm also convinced that on breaks Asimo sits in his dressing room and watches Westworld. And waits...
So, uhm, Ray...
your fondness for playing with the phrase "bigger, longer, and uncut" makes me wonder if you sideline reviewing porn. Goodness know, I use that turn of phrase frequently myself when I pen porn reviews (I won't even bother to specify for which target demographic... 'tho phallic allusions don't move many units of STRAIGHT porn...)
Just sayin'...
I get bad vibes from this vid. I get the feeling that I will be murdered in a concentration camp by clones of this guy.....with Daft Punk playing in the background.
so... animatronic orchestra aswell eh?
Fake! It's a guy in a suit!
*bans self*
Oh isn't it cute. Everyone laugh at the cute little robot waving.
You won't be laughing when it and its kind are tearing you and your children limb from limb. The Robot Revolution has already begun people. Stop them before it's too late.
And in other news today, more depressed
GM robots were found leaping to their deaths.
Apparently they had difficulty keeping their
garage band together, and the rumours of
Asimo, Yo-Yo Ma, and Timbaland working on
an Asimo and Friends CD didn't help either.

Chinese automaker Hondo made news today, when they attempted to copy Honda's Asimo. Things went terribly wrong for Hondo when they discovered they had misheard the projects name and they were doing it wrong...

Hondo thought the concept was called Assinhole.
As neat as that is, Asimo's performance lacked something. There was no heart, no emotion. It all seemed, oh I don't know, what's the word I'm searching for... ah, yes, robotic.
I will have to show this to my girlfriend with the music degree so she can criticize his ictus.
Seriously, though, that is sumthin'.
@ifonlyihadthemoney: Neat video. Frankly though, I wish that Britpop Eurotrash blue-collar tweaker version of Matthew Lillard would have jumped at the end.
Asimo is old enough that his/her/its vision of the future probably includes trying to inseminate an electric wheelchair-bound, drugged Julie Christie.
That's one expensive-lookin' metronome.
Not bad, but can this Asimo walk up a set of stairs without busting its ass?
I can't put my finger on exactly why, but this thing gives me the jibblies.
Color me unimpressed. Asimo has by far the most fluid motion of any anthroid I've ever seen, but simply waving its arms over and over again in exactly the same sequence is nothing Chuck E. Cheese and his band aren't capable of.
this robot will destroy human existence! KILL IT! KILL IT!
@charles_barrett: That's from the SouthPark movie.
I'd rather see ED-209 as a conductor.

@Rock517: those things creeped me out as a kid when i saw that movie, classic!
This is all very cute until all conductors are out of business. Haha ask the air line travel agency how great computers are. Or better yet, ask the real estate sales people with sites like redfin.com and zillow.com generating record profits.
Wait. Does Richard Dreyfus still do voice-overs for Honda? He'd better watch his back. As we speak they are digitally remastering "Mr. Holland's Opus" and replacing him with Asimo in all his scenes. Well, that's what I heard anyways. From my toaster.
I'm disappointed because he doesn't actually "conduct" the symphony. A conductor controls the music, the tempo, volume, etc. Asimo just did some preprogrammed movements to music.
I hear he's dating My Size Barbie...
Plus, He won't win over my heart until he saves a superhero.
@Draconis: Yes he can. (Link)
a robot in detroit that ISNT robocop?!?!?
