There was definitely a sense of gloom hanging over the pits this morning, but just about everyone here felt that we ought to go out and have fun doing what the late Mr. Summerfield loved doing: racing. The number of cars out on the track is quite a bit smaller than what we had yesterday, as mechanical failures take their toll (though Jay Lamm's rigorous "don't hit each other" policy is working well, with not many cars getting sidelined by enduro-style damage). Team Black Metal V8olvo is now in Full Hammer Down Mode, with our fast drivers out there and our car rising in the standings (at last check, we were #34). Our goal: to be the fastest Swedish car! I may not have time to post for a while, as I'm on pit duty and my driving turn is coming up shortly, but will do my best.

Fan-tastic. Your fans and followers are wishing we had live TV coverage with .00001% they give NASCAR.
Top sweedish car? Bah! V8olvo can make the top five!
Root for the V8olvo or the 2002? I'm so torn!
Murilee, it's insignificant compared to someone losing their life, but I hope the team was happy with the patches. Though there was a bit of a PITA factor to making them, I had fun working with the design.
As for TV coverage, it wouldn't be that difficult to set up streaming video online.
Godspeed gents, godspeed.
@rudolphdude: Amen to that. They should relegate NASCAR to the web, and let the fans search around for more details, while we watch glorious HD Jalopnivision, with 36 hours of live LeMons coverage, including Ms. Martin's CleavageCam™.
@Pope Dearthair the Awesometh:
Totally. I think of web "3.0" and I see a Jalopnik portal with live programming off 1000 dollars worth of camera gear and a macbook. I just want to hear the roar (squeal) of these hand crafted beauties.
@Pope Dearthair the Awesometh:
CleavageCam™' COTD!!
May the gods of speed carry you safely to the finish. Everyone on that track has my utmost respect and admiration. Keep us updated!
@bozoerrebbe:I remember you guys talking about the patches--did we ever see the finished version??
@smoke~:
Okay I am officially confused on this one. Isn't Murilee a boy? (Not to start this discussion again on this post even though I am... but the idea of chicks with spanners are like chicken and waffles.)
Go, team, go! FTW!
@rudolphdude: We may never now.
@TexanIdiot25: *know
I'm gonna have to friggin' insist someone post at least a tiny, grainy phone camera image of the skulls on the roof of V8olvo.
I insist!
@tenbeers: I second this instance of insistence.
@TexanIdiot25: You forget the wrench, but well done! Now let's all have some chicken in waffles!
@tenbeers: I second your motion. Please, let us see the skulls on the roof!
My (pseudo) Lemons list so far:
Volvo: In memory of 240 Gulf Driver, possibly.. or to continue this seemingly traditional Volvoness here

Cougar:

Accord:

Acclaim:

@TexanIdiot25: Still talking to friends, and waiting on the family bit for a day or two.
Were all like a bunch of giddy kids right now, watching this race... Refreshing, wearing that F5 button out to see the latest.
@Novaload: Totally! Let's see Murilee's cans...uh, I mean, skulls on the roof! Yeah, those!
@Novaload: "@bozoerrebbe:I remember you guys talking about the patches--did we ever see the finished version??"
I don't know how they look on the suits, but here's a shot I sent to Murilee before shipping:
@TexanIdiot25: What's the quasi html to display images?
I thought it was "img src="URL"", with html brackets.
There it is. I forgot that my ISP hosting company doesn't like me to use forwarded addresses.
@bozoerrebbe: Those are totally awesome...!
Well done, sir...
@bozoerrebbe: For some reason, the new comment box post a pic of the 1st craigslist link.
Typically, yes you have it right.
Damnit, the Volvo is gone...
@bozoerrebbe:
DO WANT
@Pope Dearthair the Awesometh: The kinda cleavage Murilee's got ain't the kind I'd tune in to see. Besides, I don't think they've perfected in-seat camera technology yet. And as soon as they do, I'll buy Murilee a belt.
You guys deserve to win based on race paraphernalia alone.
@pitchpitch:
If Murilee and the team say it's okay, I'll put the patches and caps in my shopping cart for online orders. It's a big design, >25,000 stitches. That's about an hour of machine time plus pre and post production, so I'd like to get $24 for the big patches (236 X 132 mm), and $20 for the baseball caps, plus s&h. If the team wants a royalty, add the standard 7 to 12% of wholesale.
One of my specialties is doing detailed embroideries of special interest vehicles. For example, I'm currently doing a varsity jacket with a '63 T-bird. Some of my earliest designs were Volvos. My more recent work @ [www.autothreads.com] has better 3D effect. You can sort of see that happening with the 245. Now I do every contour of the car as a different element.
If the images don't display I've added the links.

@bozoerrebbe:
Nice -- I'll stay tuned to this channel then. I imagine I'm not the only Jalopnik fan that would like one.
What names did you end up having on the nametags (below the large patch)?
@pitchpitch:
Hellhammer
Necrobutcher
Sadogoat
Stratocastrator
Count Chocunackh
Mørk Dårlig
Mr. Blöödwrënch
Necrobitch
@bozoerrebbe:
Totally grim!
@bozoerrebbe: Totally, totally, completely rocks! You do amazing work and, even better, have no apparent problem working with crazy people!
@bozoerrebbe: It's OK with me if you want to sell them, though I'll have to ask the rest of the guys what they think.
Shake 'N' Bake guy's. Keep it rubber side down.
@TexanIdiot25:
A few of the links come back as the 'author' has removed the item...but here's my take.
I've not been a Jalophead for more than a few months, but I'm a hard core gearhead, otherwise.
The Acclaim will likely have transmission failure by lap 83. They weren't the sturdiest of machines.
I like the Volvo...I like it a lot. However, there is something to say for bringing a limosine to the party. Sure, being it's a Ford, it'll cover the distance from the pits to the track, and that's about it, but still, way cool. Big negatives are "handling", MPG is going to be low single digits...even after you gut it, it's still a whale.
Though it does offer ultra-bitchin' Ranchero potential! Body-on-frame, so the roof shouldn't have that much to do with structural integrity.
Hell, there was cowl shake on these, unstretched, OEM.
Cougar...bleh.
The Accord could be interesting, though. It's the Cougar and Accord links which aren't working, at least on my end.
I wish my uncle were still alive...he was a Master at buying sub-$100, sometimes sub-$50 cars, which seemed to be damn near indestructible.
Old NYC cab with the LT1? $85. Drove that car 60K miles before he passed, and it had only Guliani knows how many miles, and worse, hours, on it.
