While Murilee and the rest of Team V8olvo musters on with thoughts still on yesterday's tragedy at the 24 Hours of Lemons race at Altamont, we here at the Jalopnik Detroit bureau are lending a helping hand with coverage. We've just received news from the Gulf 39 team on the identity of their teammate behind the wheel of the Volvo 242 Turbo along with a little more detail on the preliminary on-scene investigation by the California Highway Patrol. We'd indicated to the team we only wanted to know the name after they'd had the opportunity to notify family, so although we're assuming that's been done already, we still wanted to make sure to include the name after the fold of this post to make certain it's been taken care of already. With that in mind — the short, but full, e-mail after the jump.
The CHP reported that the car was in working order. No mechanical failure seems to have appeared...the impact was estimated at 50 to 60 MPH...Cort Summerfield was 46 years old (02/01/1961)Again, our deepest sympathies go out to Mr. Summerfield's family, friends and teammates and we fervently hope the accident doesn't harm what until this point was one of the great examples of grassroots motorsports in action.

Thanks for the update.
Murliee, y'all be careful out there, you hear?!
Cort Summerfield: Patron Saint of Jalopnik.
With the most sincere, heartfelt sorrow my buddies and I express our sympathy to Mr. Summerfield's family, fellow teammates and friends.
We pray that team V8olvo, all involved with, and, fans of "24 Hours of Lemons" will carry on in the most dignified, brave, humble, competitive, and, enthusiastic SPIRIT in which "24..Lemons" was envisioned that can be summoned at such a tragic time.
it just goes to show...
Rest in peace, brother Summerfield, may you frolic amongst the low mileage engine blocks at the big U-Pick in the sky.
now that i know at what age this gentleman died, i am deeply saddened - as he is of the age at which he must have had a family of his own. My heart always aches for the children and spouses left behind.
@sliderule: Is it mandatory that you have to get married and have kids because you are of a certain age?
@amblito: no, not at all. I am this driver's age give or take a couple of years. I am not married, however, i have children and a family. You are not mandated to do anything.
@amblito: yes. check the rules.
well it looks like CHiPs carry on eric estrada's supreme math skills... plus or minus a few years.. if my accounting training has taught me correctly.. i think guy was 47.. because... it is after feb. '08 and all... still whatever... nitpicking isn't necessary when i should just be giving my deepest regrets to this man who loved to drive... and therefore, loved life.
..... they've always said.... february fools day will catch up with you some day... sad to see that it came to this end...
Thanks for all the udpates! It's sad to see a death but unfortunately it is part of the sport.
All of us at TAJracing are feeling the pain and have the driver, his family, friends, and teamates in our prayers. (www.tajracing.com)
The next time I change oil, I'm pouring out the last couple drops for this man and his family.
I've found that, as I get older, the things I enjoy most in life involve some degree of risk. Moments like these make me question wanting to race, but then I think about the risk/reward of getting into a car and driving to/from work, and it still makes sense mathematically.
Very sorry to hear of this. My deepest sympathy and condolences go out to Mr Summerfield's family and friends.
So unfortunate considering the light hearted and fun vibe that this race is.
well this being my very first lemons race ,to see tragedy on the track is heart felt ,but we all live to race another day , my deepest prayrs got out to the cort family,its always an eye opener when accidents happen like this,just hard when its this close to what we all love .. Had a greatttttt time all the drivers are awsome , hope to be able to come back next year for another round of fun .. thanx all for a great time .. marc
I was very sad to see the beautiful #39 Volvo hot the wall (I was only a couple of car behind at the time in #97), but when I found out the news a short time later it was a complete shock. Today many if not all of the Lemons teams applied blue & orange #39 livery to our cars in honor of Cort. All my best to Cort's family and friends.
hi guys just want to say thank you for all the support .cort loved to race and went out doing what he loved .we as a team want to be at the next race in dec. at thunderhill we are going to be looking for a 242 agine because thats what he would have wanted us to . thank you
team gulf volvo
What a nice thing to do! Thank you. Court was a very good friend of mine. His death in this event is a tragic happening to all. Court was a good and safe driver for sure. More importantly a good and hard working man with a great drive for life.
I intend to let his wife know about your livery in honor of Court. I know that it will help to comfort her.
What a waste to die in such a supid fucking race...
...and by waste I mean tragedy.
This is very sad. At least he died doing what he loved. An honorable death. I would prefer to die in such a way. That is the only consolation I can think of for such a tragic end.
@dolo54: "An honorable death?"
People who say these sorts of insensitive things obviously have not lost a loved one at 46.
Yesterday morning I was walking down the street to get coffee. I heard a loud bang and crunch ahead, and knew there was an accident that had just happened. Sure enough, a Lexus had wedged itself into the back of a parked SUV. After sitting there for a few minutes, the Lexus backed up and took off - hitting a pedestrian pretty hard before continuing to flee.
My point is that you can be anywhere and doing anything, and injury or death could strike.
Cort died doing something he enjoyed in the company of friends. While I mourn his passing, it appears his time was up. All the safety equipment in the world (and the LeMons safety requirements are as stringent as many racing clubs) isn't going to make a difference when the Lord decides to call you home.
As someone who has run in the LeMons twice, I would not hesitate to do so again.
@Tanshanomi: Stop trolling.
@dolo54: Not trolling. Just insulted.
