Something that really jumped out at everyone upon arrival in the Altamont pits yesterday morning was the incredible themes some- in fact, most- teams applied to their cars and costumes. Your typical art-car gathering -with its plastic army men glued to 80s GM G-bodies- would be put to shame by the decor on the race cars and drivers that we saw assembled at this race. Even previous LeMons events couldn't compare. How could anything bad happen at such a gathering? Sure, such a sentiment doesn't have very solid logic behind it- yes, racing can be dangerous- but when you see teams with themes as elaborate as the Eyesore Pimps (formerly known as Eyesore Racing), the tendency is to feel that the risk doesn't apply. All of us are going to show up at the track today and try to regain some of the sense of absurdity that we know and love about this event; will keep you posted.
Here's Why Yesterday's Fatal LeMons Crash Is So Hard To Believe

My deepest condolences to the family n friends, my prayers go out to all. God speed :)
The 72 "Lincoln" is a hoot---need a couple of shots of the grill, though--how much does a 72 lincoln grill weigh or is that a fabbed replica?
The detail is amazing, including the trim piece on the c pillar (though no opera window, of course). The detail in the pimps n hos costumes is also hilarious! I don't think you can find clothes like that in VA without shooting somebody to get them. You can't buy them, that's for sho.
My condolences to family and friends of the driver too..
To Pimp-Z on the end of the line. Yes, the Mazda Emblem in fact DOES make the ensemble...
Just out of curiosity, was there any documentary crews covering the race? This seems to have taken on much higher themes now in terms of life, death, personal passions, beliefs, etc.
Just from the comments thus far I see.
@rudolphdude:
Slightly less depressed hearing that the race is back on today.
@rudolphdude: David Freiburger was there with Carjunkietv.com, and it seems that quite a few teams have blogs or websites.
I'm not going to be able to make it to the second day of the race-- mothers can be so unreasonable about Mother's Day-- but I wish everybody the best. After seeing the action yesterday, I can honestly say that LeMons is the greatest race I have ever attended. Yesterday ended on a tragic note, but I think it's only proper that the race go on. Good luck and Godspeed, everyone.
What car is under there? :) Is it a Citroën?
I think it's a CRX
Definitely a CRX.
I'm surprised that no official information has been released on the crash.
Kid Creole and the Car nutz
Sad indeed. However Keep on Rockin in the Free World, and kick some ass out there.
He would have wanted it that way.
I love the Pimpin' ain't easy license plate.
The crash is tragic, but we can't let it ruin the fun. I hope to run in the Kershaw race next year(If they run it again). I have a lead on a 190E 2.3 Cosworth. I was gonna call it the "Cosworth Tree Fiddy."
Hopefully at least someone gets the joke.
Wow. I go away for a while and when I get a moment to poke my head in, I find out that somebody has wrecked and died at LeMons. That sucks and my condolences to the driver's family.
No matter what you do - from walking down the street to driving a car of questionable lineage around a racetrack - there is some danger involved, and I hope that the driver who lost his life was having the time of his life up until when the accident occurred.
I remember when the Irwindale Speedway opened 10 years ago. It was designed from the ground up to be an incredibly safe track, for both racers and spectators. All that effort was moot when, on opening night, a driver died in a freak accident at the pit entrance. Since then there have been about 6 deaths at Irwindale, none of which could have been foreseen or prevented due to track design. It's a dangerous sport, but as mentioned earlier, life doesn't provide any safe harbor from danger and meeting one's maker doing something you enjoy is always preferable to to going out at your desk at work or stuck in traffic.
@AustinMiniMan:
How on earth can you get a 190E with a proper racing engine for under $500?
In its day, that thing was a successful racing car!
I'm having ideas:
[houston.craigslist.org]
I need y'all's opinion, would it be in good tastes to run it in the Houston LeMons, with the Gulf colors? In remembrance to our recent hardcore racer.
@Spasticteapot: Sign me up plz! If there is a cozzer involved (despite a 500$ one) thats impressive.
Ah, well. Im glad that racing will continue. I think that that is the best way to remember the driver of the Gulf Oil Volvo.
@TexanIdiot25: I think by all means have some visible area of the car in Gulf colors plus his number but you should make the car yours, personally--maybe a nice set of longhorns on top?
That's just imo.
@TexanIdiot25: I think that's a fitting tribute.
Personally, I'll be putting a blue/orange diagonal on the front fender of our car for the Thunderhill race.
@Novaload: Maybe work balls out and do a trunk mural... Al'la the Mexican Tail-gate.
Honestly, it's the most powerful car I can find that's running. A few "Blown head gasket" types, but non compete with the Vovlo's 140-150 some-odd hp, lol.
Longhorns on the hood is pretty much a must.
Just, I never realized the costs outside the car are that big ($100/driver, extra safety clothing/equipment). Gotta hit up my bro's.... and see what I can get going.
There's no way you'll fined a running Cosworth 2.3 for $500, let alone the whole car...
(Prove me wrong! :P)
Anyway... good luck out there, and Godspeed.
Oh... and... drive safely, everyone...
@Spasticteapot: 'Cause she ugly. Well, except under the hood.
@TexanIdiot25: Yeah, I think there should be a law that every very rich person should have to sponsor some important egalitarian activity, like a LeMons team or an Olympic hopeful--I would!
@TexanIdiot25:
Go for it.
I'd swap the engine for a small-block chevy. And put a turbo on it.

A very sad day for some very silly people. Racing is supposed to be fun at the grassroots level and I've seen nothing that appears to capture the true spirit better than this organization seems to.
If you take life too seriously it will kill you long before you're dead.
@Spasticteapot: I'm pondering what to do. The lack of welding abilities is the only issue for a custom engine swap. But, maybe I convince the guys who I bought the engine/trans for my '69 CST/10 to help out, they dirt track race, and are some cool dudes.
Nothing is solid at all, this was just an idea I had last night... and waiting until past mothers day to ask if I can go racing, haha.
There is so much truly sad irony that this was a Volvo. Unfortunately in life even the best planned, safest efforts can end tragically. If LeMons continues I suggest Corvairs and Pintos.
Probably the biggest risk to LeMons as it now exists is the racetracks, but I hope that it can go on. To reiterate what others have said: As much as I love cars most racing just bores me, but LeMons is something that I could care about.
@Novaload: Wouldn't that be nice? I maybe able to find a sponser, but we shall see in few days and if I can get some friends together, shoot some emails, and see what's what with my damn broken down '90 Firebird.
Murilee, and the V8olvo team, go kick some ass! Make us proud on the track!
no welding skills? go buy a lincoln and learn, baby!
@flightofthesuperbees: See no money part as well, lol.
I can find welders, we shall see.
@AustinMiniMan: As in, don't give money to Loch Ness monsters?
I reckon a Gulf Livery theme for all participants of the next LeMons race (let there be more) would be a nice touch.
