Danica Patrick, the current headline maker of the IndyCar Series has made yet another headline, this time it's not so much of the rah-rah-go-women type. In a practice round for the upcoming Indianapolis 500, she managed to run into Charles Buckman, the chief mechanic for Mario Moraes' Dale Coyne Racing team. Buckman suffered scalp and facial cuts as well as a concussion. We're not going to make stereotypical comments about women drivers, but we can't imagine what is going to happen when the Goodyear ad people find out, they're going to have a field day. Why does this happen so damn much in Indycar racing? They seem have no control of their cars when coming into the pits. In F1 they have tiny pit boxes and something like 41 crewmembers per car, and they somehow manage to avoid each other. In Indy, they have a pitlane the size of a military runway and only 8 (6) crewmembers over the wall and they smash into each other like bumper cars.
That will teach you to make a crack about her gaining weight
1.] It looks lke that guy has tread marks on his face.
2.] good thing santa claus was there to help
@boosted-lego-wagon: just a pat on the back here... you are killing it today my friend...
What, no Danica in a bikini pic this time?
@boosted-lego-wagon: In other news, skunky drowns from reading comment while drinking soda...
Sorry guys... after looking at the video, the dude was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Broke one of the cardinal rules of working at the track - not paying attention.
Not Danica's fault.
Did the tv show host have a minor stroke?
@Vintage Racer: Yeah, dude was in the wrong place at the wrong time AND not paying attention to his surroundings, it would appear.
He got knocked for a loop.
There is no woman driver joke to be had here. Everyone move along.
The Gillette Mach 3 close shave award goes to......Charles Buckman....uh....who may not be shaving for a while
kazuki nakajima did it better last year.
+ Watch video
They really got good use out of that footage. They musta repeated that clip twenty times or something.
They blew it out of proportion a bit as well, calling it one of the big stories for the practise. When this type of thing happens in F1, it only gets about 5-10 seconds in a report, max.
It certainly caught Mario off-guard.
I love it when a woman sweeps me off my feet...but NOT like that..
Fraulein Sabine Schmitz would like to race for zee Indy car?
YOU GOT KNOCKED THE FUCK OUT MAN!!!
Seriously though, wrong place at the wrong time. Ouch.
Danica looks ticked, and should be, she gets the press for a pit row mess up which was in no way her fault.
The guy was like the countless groundhogs here at the Montréal Circuit Gilles Villeneuve; race cars move quick and you will get hit if you are on the track, or get in the way during pit stops.
In her shoes, I might be tempted to send his team the bill for the front end repairs.
Pedestrians are responsible for themselves in the hot areas of a race track/course. Sorry for Buckman, though, it sucks.
Wow, that's harsh punishment. Sucks to be him!
Oh jeez, she's a real knock-out.
My philosophy is, and always has been, when you are at a track, the racecars always have the right of way. Sorry Dude, hope you are feeling better. And as much as I like Danica, her attitude and her persona, hopefully the, what is it now, IRChampcarCART?, will get it together and openwheelUSAracing will be a success once again.
Classic case of not looking where you want to go. He saw the incoming car, focused on it, shuffled his feet, and....stayed in the path of the car.
As my motorcycle training guy said: Easiest way to hit a tree it to keep looking at it.
MURDER I SAY!!!!
MURDERRRRRRR!!!!!!!!
Danica Tantrum strikes again!
Danica SMAAAASH!
At least we weren't treated to a Tom Pryce incident.
@wonkydonky: I guffawed.
Good thing it wasn't a silent hybrid, he would have been under it.
I swear I think she had a cellphone to her ear and was applying lipstick in the rearview mirror...
ok just kidding. Buckman was in the wrong spot.
@boosted-lego-wagon:
Where do you come up with this stuff?
Santa Claus -- you're killing me!
I do feel badly for the crewman, though
he wasn't paying attention. Nothing Danica could do avoid him.
The freakin stands are EMPTY.
There's no markings on the ground.
Insurance could just kill this mangled sport overnight.
@Ben Wojdyla: Wow, I hadn't heard of him before, so looked it up....I had seen the video clip before, and knew that the track marshall obviously died, but I didn't know about the whole thing with the fire extinguisher :(
@Adamskiy: Yeah, brutal - brutal and gory. Probably the most unfortunate infamous moment in 20th century racing, mainly because it was caught on film. Now you see why I didn't link a youtube vid to my comment.
I knew the parallell parking portion of the race was going to get her sooner or later.
since when is she "the biggest name in the sport?"
Make all the jokes you want, women are statistically better drivers than men at least in terms of accidents and violations.
[www.insurance.com]
@macecalrissian:
you've obviously never been inside the parking lot of a mall and watch women attempt to 'control' a honkin' SUV in confined spaces. It is SCARY to see that they even qualified to earn a license to drive
I've personally seen my share of low speed/parking lot accidents occur with a woman behind the wheel. Some of which never get reported...I have valet'd part time for five years and its the same story everywhere.
Statistics is one thing but they are only as good as the data gathered. And even that article says theres possible convergance of bad driving trends in the future.
just my opinion is all...
@macecalrissian: Just goes to show how wrong statistics can be.
Ouch for the guy, hope he gets well soon.
Biggest name in sports? Really, since when?
i say we revert the Jalopnik header back to lollipop, *except* with Danica's lips on that sucker. mmm good.
PS anyone here having massive rendering problems in Firefox2Mac? i turned off all the extensions that might be rewriting HTML, adblock+, noscript, etc, and it still looks fugly, bkgd text same colour as bkgd and i have to scroll down like 3 screens to get to article/comments... got no problems with any other site, even gawker ones - ta for any assist
it is all old boy's fault. he shouldn't have been out there.
@vitrium:
Just making a point about statistics. Statistics are interesting although they should be used with a grain of salt. I actually watched a woman in her twenties drive into my parked car at a gas station. She was doing about 3mph the whole time except when she came close to my car and slowed down even more. Good thing is that her insurance paid for the damaged door, replaced my bumper and gave me a shiny paint job! There are lots of stereotypes about drivers of varying ethnicities, ages and genders. There are also statistics. We can either go by stereotypes, statistics, personal experience or try to use all three to exercise judgment cautiously.
@macecalrissian:
My buddy Alison is an excellent driver. She drives on wednesdays. She drives on Wednesdays.
@tomax: I have the same issue at school, except on IE6 XP, I can't read the posts or comments without highlighting the text, I believe it is due to the schools proxy server set up, you got anything similar where you are?
Tire tracks all across your back...I can see you've had your fun.
@Red AuerБЯд╒╒: I also noticed this! So the injury list say concussion and some 'lacerations'... but doesnt it look like his ankle/shin gets hit by the body, not the tire? and by body I mean spoiler/wing/canard/thinger.
Mario says "I'm too famous and important to be concerned, but I am mildly interested."
It's an occupational hazard. If you're sharing a track with those machines, you have to keep your eyes and ears open.
Looks like just bad timing but I'm surprised to see that he went towards the car instead of backing away.
Deer + Headlights = Collision
Why are there people just wandering around the pit lane and why aren't they wearing helmets? This poor sod wasn't even wearing fireproofs!
Nick
@nstrug: the whole "only people with proper safety equipment can go onto a hot pitlane" seems to only be enforced on race day (at least in the IRL and, i believe, NASCAR).
and if anyone's interested, the crewman has admitted the incident was his fault...
@Nick Krush: got privoxy local here, thanks will check!
@smokyburnout: Seems a bit shortsighted as cars pit more randomly during testing/quals.
