If you're anything like us, you've invested hours and hours and hours of your life flipping through the pages of your local Auto & RV. The offering printed with cheap ink and even cheaper recycled paper leaves you stained both physically and mentally. Within its pages you can find both deals and rip-offs, treasures and tragedies, but you always find something you want. As such, we picked a random page in our favorite section — Collectibles and Classics (though Under $4,000 is pretty great too) and snapped an image. Now you tell us what you'd be tempted to take home and why.
Here's the full size image: Michigan Auto & RV, page 58, week of May 7-13

So many options, head asplode with gearhead delight.
71 Stang...but only if it comes in "Jesse Mach" yellow
@Fiat CinqueBENTO: If we ever get the hamsters going, you'll be able to see the actual page - what a twist!
Dear god, I used to read the Michigan Auto Trader nearly every night before falling asleep... And that was in the college days, when I was operating with negative dollars. It always got me scheming about projects. I would say it made me a better and more culturally attuned individual.
Ahh, yeah. This used to be my killing-time game. Pick up a copy of the local Auto Trader and see what you could get for an imaginary $5k. It's like a low-tech PCH!
The Corvair. It's the last time GM ever tried to do anything.
i'd take that sweet red chevelle in the wanted ad at the bottom
d) all of the above?
have to go with the '92 LX notch, as i have far more powerful bits leftover from a fox body i threw at the scenery a few years back...
I voted Corvair, but the ad pisses me off, since it lists 2 other cars, as well.
'63 Impala, hands down. Good price, too.
@OrangeBoss9: What about the '86 5.0 5-speed? not pictured, but in the Corvair listing. And only $2,800.
@Brian B: same here... done and done
'63 Impala - cheapest presmog vehicle on the page
'54 Chev. '59 Caddy is a VERY close second, but it's a bit too pricey.
MG roadster. Honestly, of the cars listed, it's the only one that will be any fun to drive at speeds that won't get you ticketed.
Besides...it's only $500. Can anyone say LeMons Detroit(ish?)
92 Mustang LX. I like relatively low-profile toys that are all business.
someone obviously went through a lot of trouble converting that 1997 corvette to an 86-90 C4.
also, I paid virtually the same price for a 1990 454SS about 13 friggin years ago.
/shudders to think what that bigass motor and 3 speed non-OD trans would cost to fill up these days
I can't believe people wouldn't take the 37 Ford!
I was so broke in college, reading the Buy&Sell was like leafing through the Robb Report.
@acidic: I did
@Brian B: Agreed. Mainly because I owned one about 10 years ago, and I sold it off because I thought it was a maintenance nightmare. Then I bought German cars, and realized how easy it had been.
@kleinlowe: Same here, I'd play this game. On each page of the freebie photo classifieds, I'd see which car was the most collectible classic. Only one per page, but every page has to have one.
The pages with dealer ads were always the hardest. I mean it's difficult justifying that a Z34 Lumina is going to be restored and valued at any point in the future.
@SundaySunday: Given Ben's question of which one would appeal the most as a project, I went with the '54 Bel Air.
Using my game rules (most collectible), I'd probably go with the '59 Caddy.
I'm going with the '59 Cadillac. If I can flip the car on the launch just right, those fins will really help in my bid to be a Bond stunt driver
I'd go for the '92 Mustang. For that price, and the after market exhaust etc., it might be a good buy. And it's cheap fun. The others, with the exception of the Caddy, may or may not be what is advertised. Maybe I'm just a cynic, but trusting a $5.00 ad for a $40K car in Auto/RV just don't sound smart.
Irrespective of price: 65 Vette
Considering price: 63 Impala
Sheer awesomeness: 59 Caddy
@SundaySunday: Nobody said anything about picking a project. There's nothing wrong with fawning all over than sweet Caddy.
Caddy gets my vote, though I'd shell out another $8K if it were a coupe and a color other than black...but not rose.
I don't even want to think about what interior pieces cost for this beast.
MG: Complete hell.
@Kelly: Awwwwh, but it's perfect!
Only one Mopar, and it's a *yawn* E-body.. whatta gyp.
@Mike the Dog: Damn, I was thinking exactly the same thing...
@kleinlowe: Or with that Caddy, a mid-to-high priced personal JFG.
what no longroofs? i guess they are all on the next page... had to vote for the corvair ragtop...the family had one when i was a kid (10 yo), to young to drive it but enjoyed the hell out of riding with my older (16, 17 yo) brothers in it. the caddy was my second choice. they are both tied as of this post. as far as a bond stunt driver, how would this thing float?
Money is no object, I'd probably go for the '65 vette, the caddy or the street rod... but I voted for the MG, because it's only $500 and any pick 'n pull 4 banger will take it from zero to scary faster than you can say OH SHIT!
Heck for that price, ebay original drivertrain, interior and trim, and you could have a nice little lemon.
The vair. Dying upside down backward and on fire appeals to me.
Plus, convertibles have "Jiggle Jugs"
Wow.
I really can't explain why, but I keep coming back to the Silverado.
63 Impala. But that was only after a lot of anguish.
Th funny part is just before I logged on I just tossed this one in recycle. There was a '80 'mino calling my name for $2300 in the thumb area.
You mean besides the '65 Corvette? There are other choices? Why are those there?
Even the New England edition is filled with rare and amazing machinery that goes for temptingly cheap prices. I once stole one from a gas station thinking it was the free used car flyers. I was later so racked with guilt that I went back and paid for it. Later, I learned better.
@slantsick: Hey, just because it's the descent-into-Malaise Rallye pack doesn't give you the right to slander the Challenger's good name! Have at you, good sir!
Sweet. The link is screwed from here but I see 11.80 on that S-10 on the scrap up top. That's interesting. A 97 convertible for less than 10. That's interesting... I can't have any more vehicles. It's not allowed by law.
I like the Challenger. Ain't a Chevy, for one; price is good; got the 340 and slap stick; color is right as rain; would make for a nice musclecar project if its all there.
@smalleyxb122: '92 already has the 8.8" rear and the right transmission crossmember (dual pipes) so it's less effort to swap in my bits... plus, high pressure fuel system and mass air... it's a winner!
although the '86 could easily be a good carbureted candidate, i'm suspicious at the rust/miles/thrashing to get a "rebuilt" 302 and "new" 5-speed yet only asking 2800.
I'd probably go for the '97 Corvette (I never knew they did a retro model!). I keep coming back to the 5.0 though - I missed out on the chance to pick up one for my first car when they were going for about half that price, I oughta get one while they're still moderately affordable.
I voted '59 Caddy, but I want to take it back. I thought the Corvair was being listed at $22K (Yikes!), didn't read well. At less than $9K for a Corvair ragtop, Sign me up.
I'd be happy to spend my imaginary cash on any of these lovely vehicles, but I must say that my favorite is that '54 Chevy. I have a sick urge to get a large, slow American cruiser to go with my small, slow British roadster, and if I had the space and cash I might get a Chevy of this vintage. I'd drop in a three-on-the-tree, though. It just seems like the right thing to do. Then I'd put on fender skirts, Fenton headers and glasspacks, and an Offy dual-carb manifold.
The S10. There's nothing I like more than a good sleeper.
I had to go with the 63 Impala...
but more importantly, have MI on my "where-to go for a good deal" list
Lots of fun choices, but I had to go with the Caddy. It's a beautiful machine. If I were to buy it, I might have to black out the windows and put flame throwers out the back, and then drive it slowly through quiet suburban neighborhoods scaring small children & their mothers on the way home from school.
Why on earth does anyone buy a new DTS when you can have a '59 Deville like this for half the price?
@Starlton Heston, Gushing post-mother: Where to go for a rust bucket, you mean. We love our salt here, keeps the economy together (well, it did anyway before those dang furriners figured out how to build cars and we forgot).
I went for the '59 deville, but I would've gone for the Corvair had it not been a convertible...
@bzr the paranoid android: Well, if you saw what I consider a desireable Mopar, you'd probably laugh in bewilderment*.. I wasn't deriding this particalur Challenger, I'm just not into E-bodys at all, personally.
*Think four-door, puke-green, slant6 A-body.
This is tough. But I'm going with the MG for $500 OBO. I think I can scrap it out and walk away with enough profit to buy a tank a of gas.
The '59 Caddy because it's awsome and would annoy tree huggers, earth muthers and crazy former vice presidents.

The fastback is an automatic. The body is the same so you can convert it to a standard but you cannot, CANNOT own a 71 fastback with an AT.
There's three that speak to me on this page; Challenger, Impala and MG. MG is priced right, and you know it will offer years of agony. The Impala would be more money, not ridiculous money, and it would be on the streets quickly. The Challenger is a collection of parts for almost twice as much money.
I'll take the Mopar, because then I can claim that I have a special numbers matching one year only 340 in mine.
Ohh god the torture...
The Corvair looks good and is an awesome beach cruiser always wanted a Monza spider...
The 92 LX stang is one of the best stangs out there, still had the 5.0 and much lighter then the GT...
454 truck... Need you say more? quick and lots of pulling power.
pimp caddy, great year for those and those look great in Desert Sand (pink)
72 Challenger with a mid sized v8 nothing wrong there.
63 impalla is a steal way under valued next to the 64 and pretty much the same look.
@smoke~: God, you are useless.
Voted '37 Ford, as there's been a '40 ragtop in the family since the early 60's. It's now on the wrong coast & I still think that hunk of steel is as amazing now as I did when I was 8.
Though I didn't even notice the 65 Vette..hardtop even. 63-67 Corvettes have always been the most appealing to me.
That'd be a hard choice given the options in this want-ad Amerigasm.
