The entire BMW X6 production run for 2008 has been sold. While there are still a smattering of vehicles available at some dealers, every one scheduled to depart the Greenville, SC production facility has been spoken for by a dealer, many of whom report a long waiting list for the new SAC. This doesn't surprise us at all; the X6 is one of the best driving vehicles made by BMW, easily eclipsing sports SUV competitors like the Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport. In fact, in a competition with the Mercedes CLS, we'd put our money on the big bimmer every time. [via BMWBlog] Thanks to Horatiu for the tip.

"...one of the best driving vehicles made by BMW, easily eclipsing sports SUV competitors like the Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport." Does it drive better than a 135i or an M3? No? I'll pass.
I have not been this disgusted since I saw the first Bangle 7 series' rear end. Yuck.
I bet none of them get taken off any sweet jumps (the only justification of this car in my mind)
I spot a typo: should have read, "BMW sells out."
Pork-u-bimmer.
Ah, the American public. So smart.
They r fugly...must have made 10 of them and sold out.
I actually saw one on the street yesterday. It looks just as strange in person. It totally does bring back the long-neglected AMC Eagle niche market.
I wish I had a bazillion dollars...I would have bought them all in an act of charity to spare persons with some sense of automotive aesthetics.
And then I would have used them all in a Jalop staff vs. commenter race series. On the salt.
I called this back in September...[jalopnik.com]
For all the naysayers...
This thing is hot and will sell.
I like it, and have since day one.
Interesting, my local BMW dealer has about 15 of them on the lot and can't sell them. I know they are selling them at discounted prices already. I'm sure that $4.10 a gallon Premium isn't helping.
They have one in the baggage claim area of the Greenville Airport, about 5 minutes form the BMW plant. I was waiting for my rental car there recently (not a bimmer) and went to check it out. Front end, good, side profile, not too bad, then I went around to the back and..
AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
The ass end is uglier than Rosy O'Donnell's.
Where is the back of it? What happened to it? Did they lose it? Where do I store my stuff since the trunk is.....well there is no trunk. That thing sucks.
Man, they totally sold out. I remember when they used to mean something, and now their just shills for corporate america...
Oh wait, that's Metallica. Never mind.
@boosted-lego-wagon: I was totally gonna type that.
You keep buying them, America, and they'll keep building them.
What the hell is wrong with us?
I still like how it looks.
This is not helping to cure my misanthropy.
Really? People actually want the Bavarian Aztek?
I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if thousands of orders for X6s were suddenly placed.
I fear something terrible has happened.
Strange. Nobody at the Chicago Auto Show even batted an eye in interest at this thing. Must be a Left Coast thing.
I've seen 2 around Chicago already. Ok maybe it was the same one in different locations.
the reason it drives so well is the same reason that the Nissan GT-R does: torque vectoring. Audi, MB and just about every other manufacturer need to get their ass in gear and start putting torque vectoring differentials on their cars. I know Audi has one in development, but it hasn't made it onto any cars yet.
I just can't figure this out... it (the X6) seems to be an unattractive repackaging of an overpriced quasi-useful BMW X5, which is senseless in light of the 5-Series Touring (wagon). It seems that logic has been turned upside down. Granted, the X6 may have a better drivetrain, but why can't that be migrated to existing BMW body styles.
I'm lost here...
Courtesy cars? Parts getters for the service departments? Does this allow dealers an increased M3/M5 allocation? Or just dumbasses with money?
SAC o'shit
Even Subaru thought the Outback sedan was too ugly for words and that's exactly what this looks like.

Without proper figures this article is as useless as the car it describes.
Wait a muinute, aren't these the same folks that underbuilt the MINI to keep demand high? They wouldn't pull the same trick twice would they? I don't think Germans have a history of doing that.
That's right, I said muinute, and I meant it!
@charles_barrett: EXACTLY!!
seriously Charles, you make every valid point imaginable. IT SOLD OUT???
how many did they make? It's just the first run, so that could be... 2,000 depending on their plans...
@1300ccsoffury:
Funny, I counted 3 over on Lakeshore the other day.
@o0adam0o:
agreed..thing is unfortunate looking
I'm surprised I haven't seen any on my commute through Glendale, The Valley and Santa Clarita...all nexuses of Status Symbol-UVs.
Must be an East Coast thing.
@Al Navarro: Oh it's on like Saigon!
Wait. Do you have a bazillion dollars?
Damn.
I'm really sick of this beast, no not beast. It just so stupid. My ex-sister-in-law, Satan would drive one. That's how bad it is. I don't think there has ever been a vehicle posted here more that I cared for less. With my financial ineptitude it is not like I can consider buying one. But years from now when I could, I still wouldn't because it is absolutely useless. What is it's redeeming value? Obviously not style. Its like a Cayenne with no hauling capacity.
So...what we've got here is BMW's attempt at building a Subaru.
Except that you can get a Subaru with a bigger interior, more room in the trunk, a quite frankly glorious sunroof, and the sheer rock-like durability of any Fuji Heavy Industries product.
Yes, the WRX STi looks awful, and is horrible and plasticy on the inside. But when was the last time BMW won a WRC title?
just add giant mud flaps and take it rallying
needs more stickers and wings and vents and machine guns
I'm quite fond of it, it reminds me of my Golden Labrador mix...
And they're both built quite large and low to the ground as well, actually.
I don't care how good it drives-I'll take a special edition Mustang over this monstrosity anytime...
Fuck you, humanity.
In fact, didn't Jack Palance used to pick better SUV's than this out of his sh*t?
Must be a lot of rich people with poor eyesight.
Bummer. I wanted one.
Selling an entire production run to dealers is not the same as moving them off the lots. Good luck selling these tubs. Most buyers - other than those who finance revolutions in their spare time - probably don't make enough to fuel this sucker on a weekly basis.
@Number_Six:
That is exactly what I was thinking.
This vehicle would be merely offensive if it was just an X5 with no cargo area. But since it is a *four seat* X5 with no cargo area, it verges on the profane.
It's bad enough that BMW has been removing the possibility of using the center seating position in their coupes; what kind of slack jawed moron would buy a 4 door, four seat TRUCK?
I mean, can you imagine the conversation where your friends say, hey, let's take that giant freaking truck you bought, and you say, sorry, it only seats four. And I have to stop at the gas station on the way. To everywhere.
Subaru totally mishandled the upmarket for its customers by only offering them the minivan-like B9 Tribeca. I think this is the market that BMW is trying to reach with the X6.
It looks like a previous generation Legacy Outback sedan on steroids. Fugly yet badass. Twin turbo V8 does a lot for the looks of this thing.
@goatrope:
"Courtesy cars? Parts getters for the service departments? Does this allow dealers an increased M3/M5 allocation? Or just dumbasses with money?"
I'm voting dumb asses with money.
ah, too bad that BMW built them stateside or we could have had a Jalopnik-chartered sub do a Cougar Ace on their idiotic ass
FRom the German car magazine Auto Motor und Sport... BMW plans to build 40.000 X6 a year, 20.000 for the USA only... but this still doesn't give the correct amount... The first production year is normally less and also a few months short..
I think the post is right about Cayenne buyers flocking to the new hotness X6.
It's wrong about selling out as others have said. We've got 200+ in our national inventory on Cars.com.
I drove it this week at road america. The smaller engine too, and it was AWESOME. Nothing stranger than being that high up and taking the carousel in the X6. Friggin great. And the brakes were magical.
And it is much better looking in person. Plus I got int he back and found it not too cramped. certainly not like the CLS.
@Rabbi Dave: Hi dave, while I agree with you about how great the X6 is to drive, you're mistaken about it selling out. As i stated i the article, every vehicle scheduled to depart the factory in 2008 has been sold to a dealer.
Oh, and if you haven't checked out our review already, it's here: [jalopnik.com]
It looks better than the 7, 5 or the 3 sedan. Whine all you want but this vehicle will one day allow BMW to buy out Ferrari from Tata and then start making beautiful Ferrari SACs.
The above statements are forward projections and should not be construed as any sort of financial market predictions to help you decide where to spend your fat economic stimulus package.
Where is all the X6-hate is coming from? Of course it's not an M3 in driving dynamics, but let's compare it with what's really on the road today. Other than Audi wagons, most other luxury utes resemble chrome-laden Frigidaires. The X6 is much more interesting and fun. Sure it doesn't have the cargo room that your Land Rover offers. But i can't remember the last time i saw a Land Rover or Escrapalade that was hauling more than three bags of groceries anyway.
Wouldn't you rather see an X6 on the road than the fat XXXL utes?
