Some of you, upon seeing yesterday's Down On The Street car, seemed to think that a car so insanely low can't possibly get much real-world street time. Wrong! I was out on Alameda's main drag last night and heard the distinctive sound of a straight-pipe-equipped air-cooled VW engine approaching. Sure enough, it was the Low RHD Thing!
You Think That Low VW Thing Can't Drive?

I'm oddly drawn to it.
its that low on purpose??? naaaaawwwwww.
I'm gonna estimate the headlights' candlepower at 3.
I hereby retract my stated doubt in this car's drivability.
Respect.
I didn't think that thing was terribly cool yesterday.
Today is a brand new day.
Thing- meet go-kart.
That's gotta be a rough riding sumbitch.
This is awesome. 1/2" off the ground, useless headlights, and the unabomber or whoever is driving can't see over the hood/spare tire. At least as loud as this thing probably is, you have ample time to get the hell out of the way.
Maybe he has short legs?
My buddy had a Squareback almost as low. We once knocked out the spare tire well on a freeway expansion joint. It sure looked cool though.
This guy demonstrates admirable commitment to low.
Seeing something that low move anywhere is crazy.
Mad props, yo.
@DannyBN: That's so the enemy bombers can't see you. They'd go for the slit headlights, but there's a ration on tape. And suspension bits.
Great, now I really want one.
@DannyBN: Based on those not-so-bright headlights, this one must be a 6-volt car.
I still say it's a street sweeper. It's got a little broom that sucks up the leaves and dumps them into the interior.
Color me impressed. Looking at yesterday's pics, esp. with the outdoor chaise lounge cushion in the back seat, I'd have thought you stumbled on some homeless dude's hangout that was being aired out on a windy fall day.
Photoshop, imo. Some clues:
1) Vehicle accidentally "flipped" to create impression of RHD
2) Pixels
3) When I saw Murilee take the picture, that saucy wench, she was clutching a beer in the other hand.
Further proof that it's Alameda, not the Moon that rulez
it's like dachshund... but with wheels.
@ViergangFuchs: Murilee's a dude, dude.
I would think the owner would need a spotter to ride along, lest a downed twig or an oversized rat knock out half the pushrod tubes.
"Pea gravel, dead ahead! Hard a'starboard!!!"
@DannyBN: We know that. Calling him Mrs. is a running joke 'round these parts...
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
I'm amazed at the resolve Murilee practiced in not sprinting into the road and launching himself into the backseat... to get an up close and personal interview.
... and scare the bejebus outta the guy driving.
@DannyBN: *shakes head sadly*
@ViergangFuchs: Now that's funny.
Observe the 12v headlights running on 6v power. Prince of Darkness, not quite - how about Duke of Dimness?
Or Joe Lucas?
I believe the question that most applies to this Thing isn't so much whether is canbe driven, but whether it should be. And I vote: No.
@FreeMan: @PeteJayhawk: Sorry. I've been busy trying to keep my Connectedness Index at 0.
I love the Thing. One thing about owning a rare or oddball VW is that you always seem to come back to your car in a shopping mall and find other rare or oddball VWs parked beside it. While nowhere near as awesome as the ultra-low Thing Murilee found, the sound this one made when the owner drove away made my naughty bits tingle.
It abandoned its nest of dead leaves? It must be in search of food.
How fast could it possibly go without immediate danger of belly scrape?
@Pope Dearthair the Awesometh: A bra on a Thing? Now that's irony.
@dolo54:
Absolutely. Aparently it's the "In" thing with VWs now. It's called the Hood Ride look. I think it's dumb and I've been around the air cooled VW community for over 20 years. But I guess it's cool if you like to feel like your going to bust your teeth out going over every bump.
@stuntpuppy:
Comment of the day.
Murilee...your sense of timing is magnificent. Showing us the unbelievable one day, then proving its correctness the next...bravo... and fantastic timing with the camera.. how dooo you dooo that?
@Pope Dearthair the Awesometh: It especially works with Beetles. They seem to attract other Beetles, both old and New.
I have a '73 Thing. I had a '74 many years ago.
There's nothing on the market like 'em, ever. The new Jeep 4 door thingy.
