In a long article about the Indiana Democratic Primary, there's a picture of Hillary Clinton getting the endorsement of IRL racer and team-owner Sarah Fisher, with the caption "Hillary Rodham Clinton paid an election-day visit to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Tuesday to appear with race car driver Sarah Fisher, a top woman on the Indy car circuit, who endorsed her this week." This is true in the same way that Hillary Clinton is the top performer in the Democratic race for the White House in that "top" here means "supreme but for those other people with superior records." Technicalities.
We don't mean to indicate that Sarah Fisher isn't a capable driver or team owner, it's just that she's never won a race and her best finish is 17th. We think that "top woman" honors should go to Danica Patrick, who actually won a race. Still, after this we predict a 15-point spread for Hillary in Indiana. (h/t Hyman_Decent)

Time to star worshipping the golden idols!
I heard a rumor that IRL drivers are PRO-ETHANOL! Pass it on.
Bet that endorsement's going to change a few votes.
Are we sure they didn't just mean she's the dominant one in relationship?
I think you could call any woman driver A top woman, as they are all one of the top women. Now to say that she's THE top woman is a little different.
@AshWipe: lol. notice when they pit, they never say they're coming in for fuel. they always say they're coming in for more ETHANOL.
"a top woman on the Indy car circuit"
Does not mean the same thing as "the top woman on the Indy car circuit"
And with so few women in the IRL, I'm sure any one of them could be considered "one of the top" or "a top" woman in the league.
First, the Times got it wrong on WMDs. Now this.
Yea, saying "a top woman" implies that she is one of a group of the best female drivers on the circuit. Which is still kind of a moot point because theres only like 3. Danica is obviously the best so calling her a top woman isn't totally false because she is still miles better than Milka Duno.
I dunno, are you still "a top ________" if you are 2nd out of 3? Could be a glass half-empty/full argument, but by that logic, I'm "a top" a lot of things.
@Maxichamp: For all we know the NYT thinks the IndyCar Series was started by a bunch of moonshiners in the South and is run by a mop-topped British dwarf named Wally.
"...a top woman on the Indy car circuit..." They didn't even say she was a top woman driver..
@Tomsk: On further review, that pic positively screams for a new caption contest. Here's mine:
HC: Why are those parts wrapped in gold?
SF: That's our budget, silly! You didn't think we used dollars, did you?
Everyone, the caption as posted here was changed from what it said when I emailed the tip; it did say the top and not merely a top. Furthermore, it said the same within the body of the article (which I read after sending in the tip).
I just checked that Web page again. A different picture now accompanies the article and the text in the article now reads race car driver Sarah Fisher, a leading woman driver on the Indy car circuit. (That doesn't change the fact that she's second-best of just three and the the third doesn't race often.)
Matt didn't mention here that in my email, I speculated the Times writer was just regurgitating something put out by the Clinton campaign.
"Top" clearly refers to sexual positions.
Um, not argue, but her own web-page says she finished 2nd at Homestead in '01. That's like fifteen places higher than you're claiming and only one behind miss Patricks admitedly superior 1st place... clarification?
Or her ability to fill out a top. Honestly, Sarah is, IMHO much more attractive than Danica and Milka (ever see her up close? Too much sun is a bad thing) and has a seemingly better personality (though Milka does have a great personality as well) She could be as or more popular than Danica. Hopefully someday we'll see how they all compare if they can get decent rides. Sarah at least has some control over that since she's running her own team now.
Did you here Danica endorsed a meal at KFC?
It is the one that is all leg and no breast.
Sarah Fisher has two podium finishes on her record, a third at Kentucky in 2000 and a second at Homestead in 2001. She also qualified on the pole at Kentucky in 2002, and I think her speed from that run is still the track record.
She's also the first and only female owner/driver in the IndyCar series.
Well, Hillary has certainly never had a problem turning left.
@smoke~: Zing!
@theeastbaykid: I'm always a top.
Does anyone else see the snipers in the background there? Duck!
how can you not say Sarah Fisher isn't one of the top women in IndyCar? she was the second fastest woman in practice today (32nd fastest out of 33 cars, 8 mph and 1.5 seconds off the leader).
The original article said THE top woman. "A top woman" isn't inaccurate.
In any case, can't we just bask in the glow of a well photographed awkward white-person hive five?
high five, that is.
Maybe they're speaking of her preferred sexual power role. As in, not a "bottom?"
Here in Indiana, you see Fisher in TV ads for all kinds of stuff year round. Although she definately hasnt had the success and media coverage Danica has, you definately see more of her. Before her it was Lynn St. James I think? I'm not for Hillary or Fisher for that matter, but she definately has a big presence in Indycar whether she is a successful driver or not. In Indiana you just see stuff about Indycar year round, where I imagine you don't elsewhere.
@Turboner: Dammit, that really is funnier when you say it.
Put Sarah in Danica's car and see how she does. IMO, she would have won her first race much sooner than Ms. "I Married My Old-Balls Fortysomething Personal Trainer" Patrick.
Like most people who are trying to scrape along at the bottom of a race series, Sarah has a lot of obstacles to overcome, from shortage of practice time due to funding to simply not being able to replace consumables as often. I'm a fan, and not just because her rack is approximately ONE ZILLION TIMES LARGER than the competition's.
@ViergangFuchs: Wow, did Danica Patrick kick your dog or something?
I will say that I caught Patrick's appearance on The Late Show following her win and it was almost painful to watch.
