Hyundai Genesis Spotted In Sunny SoCal

SoCal Euro's eagle-eyed forum fan-boy by the name of "dub*man" caught some shots of the new 2009 Hyundai Genesis at rest in a local SoCal parking lot. We're assuming it wasn't just stopping for a quick bite at a local Korean BBQ joint. Whatever it was doing there without manny plates affixed to the back end, we're happy he caught some clearer shots of the new four-door with the ever-changin' grille from the boys n' girls at Hyundai. Yes, Hyundai.

  • Why manufacturers most insist on the "+/-" and not the more natural "-/+" arrangement for automanuals I'll never know.

  • that grille looks aftermarket in a bad way

  • 재 제일 좋아하는 한국 자동차 입니다

  • I've seen Weber grills that were better looking than that.......

  • @Number_Six: Gazuntite!

That front end with that grill
    reminds me of this guy...

The automotive equivalent of Applebees. Yummy.

  • I'm not sure whether I hate the grill design more, or the nutless decision not to put a badge anywhere on the front.

On the other hand, the car's styling is so blatantly plagiarized that maybe a unique grill should be to their credit.

  • The Korean gov't is investigating why this starts at around $32,000 in the US and $50,000 in Korea. Luxury sedan dumping, perhaps? Seem to be selling well in Korea, from the number I've seen on the roads.

  • I think Hyundai should make up a fancy brand name and pull the ol' Lexus/ Acura/ Infiniti trick on folks. Otherwise, I don't think anyone is going to pay 30 grand plus for a Hyundai no matter how good it is on paper. But then again, creating an exclusive dealership network would make the cost of this bargain-basement faux luxury car skyrocket into Acura/Infiniti territory. It's ashamed because it does sound like a competent player. If this was a new Honda model above the Accord (with slightly different, less Mercedes derivative styling of course) this would be heralded as the best thing since sliced bread.

  • They brought 2 Genesis Coupes to Cars and Coffee this weekend in Irvine. They looked pretty cool from the photos.

  • @johnnyichiban: agreed. at least my MINIs CVT controls go in the correct direction. pull back goes up, push forward goes down.

  • Yes, it does look a bit dodgy. But it's got more horsepower than a Ford Mustang!

    It's still no G8, though.

  • @macecalrissian: The fact is, people are paying $30k plus for Hyundai's right now: Azera, Veracruz, Entourage. I don't think we will have trouble moving these, assuming the quality is there.

  • @johnnyichiban: Why manufacturers most insist on automanuals (-/+ or +/-) and not the more natural arrangement for manuals (R123/456), I'll never know.

I fixed it for you :)

  • @johnnyichiban:Give me six the hard way over an auto tranny any day of the week. Don't take that the wrong way.

  • @supra89t:
Excellent point. Throw in a good rebate to go with "America's best warranty" and some favorable reviews and comparison test in C/D or R&T and they might have a winner. Personally, I would go for an A4 or even a 135i for that price.

OK, everyone raise your hands if you ever thought that Hyundai would be building a Modern Rear Wheel Drive, V-8 Powered Sedan, at the exact same time that General Motors is introducing theirs? Not Toyota, Not Nissan, Not Mazda, Honda, or Mitsubishi. And not even Ford (you can't count the Crown Vic and clones as Modern, and don't count the Aussie versions either).

So, Rear Wheel Drive V-8 Sedans... Chrysler 300 and Charger, Pontiac G8, Cadillac CTS & STS, and a host of Luxury Makes (Benz, BMW, Jag, Infiniti, and Lexus)... and.... who else? Makes you wonder how far Hyundai will go....

  • This thing is going to be winner no matter how you slice it. The interior appears on par with some luxury vehicles and the exterior could be mistaken for several other luxury vehicles with sticker prices twice as high and warranty coverage of less than half. There is a particular market that is looking for precisely that.

At the meeting, the Hyundai steering (get it? hah!) committee compromised on the 3 top choices for grille design:
    1. The alien from the first Alien movie
    2. A horseshow crab
    3. The upper ventral thorax of a human skeleton.

  • I'd like to 카풀 in that with some hot Korean women.

  • @Novaload: It reminds me of dragging a toothpick through lines of contrasting sauce.

  • We're talking upper 30's for a V8 though, right? Wasn't a loaded V8 going to push 40k?

  • This new Hyundai may be a winner, but I for one would NEVER jump into something like this until it's been on the road for at least 4 years and the bugs have been worked out. Even Acura, Lexus and Infiniti have to work out bugs each time they release a new generation of car. Hyundai is renown for cutting corners - that's the only way they can sell cars so cheap - so how could anyone believe all these luxury gadgets in this car won't have a multitude of problems after a few years?

VW tested this segment with the W8 Passat several years ago, and basically failed (this was supposed to be the foot-in-the-door for the Phaeton, which obviously also failed).

Seems like Hyundai may have a winner with this price/ameninity combo.

Two words: Extended warranty (b2b, not powertrain)

This is the first vehicle that my "non-automotive loving" friends have asked me about...

I predict this car will do well.

  • Image of Ash78 Ash78 at 11:58 AM on 05/05/08 *

@Novaload: I don't want to hear any more details about "Crabs" and a "Horse show"

I think the grille sort of looks like someone stole the Mazda logo and went wild with "layer via copy" on Pchop.

  • Nice car. I would buy it, but I wish Hyundai comes up with its original design in stead of copying other manufacturers. the rear is obviously taken from a 7 series, which is not all that flattering. The I-Drive wannabe on the center console is a mystery, but there's got to be a way to make that look more upscale than just a big knob sticking out behind the shifter.

But, like any Hyundai, I'm sure you get a ton of goodies for $40k. You can't beat Hyundai's value right now, not even Honda and Toyota.

  • While this thing might have an interesting powertrain, it becomes less interesting with today's fuel prices. And the styling makes me yawn.

Even though the Hyundai V8 has more power than the regular Mustang V8... so what? It doesn't have the style... and no manual transmission.

For that amount of money and factoring in fuel prices, if I wanted a new premium car, I'd more likely buy an entry level Saab 9-3 wagon or Volvo V50... both of which are still fast enough, looks more interesting, probably use much less fuel and are more practical.

  • I don't think anyone is going to pay 30 grand plus for a Hyundai no matter how good it is on paper.

I heard this same noise 20 years ago when Toyota was talking about starting Lexus and Honda had already started Acura.

  • Shields up, Lexus!

  • hopefully for the aftermarket guys they leave the grill just like it is.

Cha Ching Cha Ching Cha Ching

  • @boosted-lego-wagon: LOL...

    Red Alert!

  • I would not worry about Lexus as much as I am concerned about Nissan/Infiniti. Of course, for the same money as a G35/G37 you can have a Hyundai.

Then again, I am worried that Hyundai made a HUGE blunder. Who is going to spend Infiniti money on this Korean made crap.

  • @petersterncan:
And finally people are letting out their inner trekkie. It's sorta like saying "bring out the Gimp" when a Star Trek reference can be made. I see the Genesis and I have a sudden urge for turtle soup. All in all, I'm impressed by what Hyundai is putting out. Hyundai is stepping up to play with the big boys.

  • Actually, the front reminds me of the Milwaukee art museum.

I also think every one is copying BMW's design.

  • @johnnyichiban: Why manufacturers most insist on the "+/-" and not the more natural "-/+" arrangement for automanuals I'll never know.

Ditto, you should pullback to upsift, and push forward to downshift... that way if you are under extreme braking you will downshift, F1's and BMW and I think Ferrari are the only ones that do it right.

  • I'm probably in the minority here, but I like it; weird grille and all. I bet its best color is black. (Then again, what doesn't look good in black?)

  • I drove a genesis while on vacation last month. It was nice and luxurious, what I'd expect from a lexus/benz sedan. I'm not the target demographic, but I can definitely see it appealing to my parent's generation.

@TPSreports: My thoughts exactly. Korean manufacturers are following the footsteps of the Japanese manufacturers. Acura and Lexus are both well-respected brands now. Hyundai really does need to get some fresh designs though to make an impact.

  • Looks like the bastard chile of an Infinity and and BMW 7 series. can you say ripp off. not to mentino that thats where all of our recycled scrap metal goes. i dont want a recylced car frame.

  • child*

  • I don't even know why Hyundai would bother entering the luxury standards.

Yes, I was born and raised in Korea; but smart business has nothing to do with your bloodline. Shit quality is shit quality wherever you go.

Hyundai just got it rolling with their 10 year/100k warranty, they have no business in the Luxury market due to the mass consumers perception of Hyundai; which is a cheap, mid-size, vehicle for the lower-middle class.

This car looks like a blatant ripoff of the '05 7 series, Audi S series, and a bit of LS430 series.

Once again, for a Genesis price; you will do rather better getting an entree German/Japan luxury vehicle.

Yes I am a Korean, but I prefer my Lexus over Hyundai on any given day. A world class product is a world class product, regardless of where its produced.

  • Hey! Pics of my '08 300C in a Hyundai thread!!!

  • If my Hyundai Genesis breaks down can I just blow on the cartridge and press reset?

  • this is what the Acura RL should have been...

  • It appears this Hyundai has got the right stuff. In the sweet spot where Buick and Chrysler should be. The challenge will be in the marketing, I think.

Infiniti's Q45 never recovered from the mindnumbingly odd marketing effort at its debut, much to the delight of Lexus.

I'm glad it has an actual name as opposed to another forgettable alphanumeric tag, re: G8. I think the G8 should of been christened "Tempest". (Sorry, off subject. Sort of.)

  • @DontPracticeRenteria:

You didn't have to do that with the Genesis. However, it might be called the Megadrive in other foreign markets.
