Commenter Of The Day: Let's Do The Time Warp Edition

Rockyhorrorpicshow.jpgThere's something about The Rocky Horror Picture Show that has always weirded us out. As much as we like campy films, transsexuality and Barry Bostwick, the film has always missed the mark with us as a campy classic (we much prefer Plan 9 From Outer Space and O' Lucky Man). That being said, the movie has been able to maintain its cult following for years. In fact, most major metropolises or college towns will annually, if not weekly, show the film along with some sort of audience participation. Having gone to school in Austin, we were always at risk of going to one of these events. One chilly November night we, along with our significant other, trekked out with some friends to see an exceptionally sophomoric version in a sparsely attended monthly showing at a theatre far north of town. It was boring and amateurish but survivable. That is until we recognized one of the performers as the sister of a high school friend. It got worse when the sister recognized us and thus directed her show towards us. Longest night ever, man.

This brings us up to the topic of oddities and transsexuality, which seems obvious when talking about French supercars. Though, MarionCobretti approaches it from a good angle:

For me, seeing two pedals and a prindle in a supercar is like spying a beautiful woman from across the room and then getting closer and noticing her Adam's apple and the five o'clock shadow lurking beneath her foundation.
Been there, done thad... we mean that.

    A Transvestite.

    From Transexual Transylvania.

  • "I'm happy, your happy, the rail is happy."

As Magenta slides down the banister.

    KP

  • From the second those disembodied lips came onscreen, I knew I would fear for my life. And that's why this is the scariest movie I've ever seen. (Don't call me a wimp, some of the fans are even scarier.)

Anyway, well-deserved to Mr. Sylvester Stallone there.

  • @danio3834: Transaxel Transylvania

  • Image of danio3834 danio3834 at 06:21 PM on 05/02/08 *

@vr6john: Exactly. Some cars with transaxles are a lot like transvestites.

  • Saw this 23 times in the cinema.
Own the DVD ansd have watched it even more.
    Own the LP movie soundtrack.
Won a bottle of champagne and $50 in a halloween dress up party, I was Riff Raff in the silver space suit.
Brought my parents to see it.
Made me think about Susan Sarandon. Often.

"A toast" "Say it" "Lopsided" and countless other prompted lines all burnt into my memory banks as I shouted and threw toast in air at the theater at just the right moments.

Just to be clear, I have not been there and done thad, but still heck of a movie.

Just took out the album and the pic of Susan in the "toucha toucha touch me, I wanna be dirty" scene is still pretty....ummmm interesting. I need a moment.

"Been there, done thad... we mean that"

So, Matt, which is it: "done Thad" or "done that"...?
Hey, in college, a boozy weekend can lead to all kinds of adventures... I know, as I've been there and done Thad, and Pete, and George, and Jason, and...

  • @charles_barrett: I was using "we" and therefore referring to Miss Martin, who gets around.

  • @charles_barrett: @Matt Hardigree:

Ha! Thanks for the laugh heading home boys. Have a great weekend!

  • I guess the Jalopnik thread here is the fact that Brad & Janet had car trouble, setting the stage for all of the wacky, frolicking gender bending, cannibalistic, vaudvillian antics to follow.

If we can take one lesson from the RHPS, it is that going for a simple drive can lead to some pretty out there moments. STAY ALERT.

  • I MC'd that movie off and on for years.

If you don't get it...we'll live without you.

  • Image of charles_barrett charles_barrett at 08:18 PM on 05/02/08 *

@Matt Hardigree: Lucky Thad, to have you and Murilee double-team him...

  • Fail. It's PRNDL. Play again soon.

  • @Matt Hardigree: Yeah yeah, we all know how you and Miss Martin like to have "girls night out".

  • I love this movie, haven't seen it in ages, but it made me enjoy Meatloaf even more as a...musician.

  • @mechimike: Meatloaf? Again?

  • So I live in the "artsy" part of town. There used to be a guy that bar tended around here and I guess you would say lived an alternative lifestyle.

He tells me that one of the nearby bars is having a Rocky Horror Picture Show night and they were looking for someone to ride a motorcycle through the bar at the point that Meatloaf makes his appearance. Because I just happen to be rather portly and have a motorcycle.

I have ridden a Honda 750 Magna through a gay bar on Rocky Horror Picture Show night.

  • What the hell is a prindle? That's Mr. Burns speak to me.

  • Image of charles_barrett charles_barrett at 10:00 PM on 05/02/08 *

@mytdawg: Dude! You are an arts-and-crafts hero for doing the "ride" on a Rocky Horror Picture night at a late-night venue... bless you, 'Bro... You rock it big-time for all of us...!

  • @charles_barrett: You are too kind...

We got treated very well. By that I mean my whole family (wife, 11 year old daughter, myself, and half the neighborhood) got a big table and VIP service all night long. It was very cool.

And just to improve the visual (although I had a half helmet/goggles on that night)...

  • @hootjigga: ParkReverseNeutralDriveLow...

  • I'm ashamed to admit I've never seen it, aside from a couple minutes when I came home on a Halloween evening to find my June-Cleaver-ish mom, wrapped up in her pyjamas and bathrobe and sipping her sleepytime tea, watching RHPS on TV with a look on her face that said "WTF" better than anything I've ever been able to recreate.

The photo of Tim Curry on the cover, however, somehow always makes me think of Murilee. Even though I'm sure Murilee looks much better stockings and leather.

  • Image of Starlton Heston, Gushing post-mother Starlton Heston,... at 10:36 PM on 05/02/08 *

@Pope Dearthair the Awesometh: No, no, do not be ashamed, be proud!

Had an ex that was into this type stuff, I tried it out, watched the whole thing, all I got out of it was Susan Sarandon's boobs.

  • I had seen the end of it about 100 times because it always let out a little later than the midnight movies we always went to see (Wizards, The Wall, um.. Wizards). We'd get hammered and go see a movie then when it let out we'd go to the next theater and watch the end.

I saw enough of it to know I really didn't need to see it, if you know what I mean. But there were girls running around in lingerie and that was good enough to go watch the end again.

When I finally did see the whole movie, I realized that the audience participation was relevant because by itself the movie kind of sucks.

    Manual tranny=too much work.
(The word "tranny" did not appear in this post yet. I'm confused. Too easy?)

@mytdawg: That's your van? Your bike matches the van? Cool. Unless the van is not yours. Then it's just a creepy coincidence.

As for Murilee's stockings, one is replacing a fan belt; the other is hung by the chimney with care.

    @Pope Dearthair the Awesometh:

  • @Novaload: Actually I've got a teal truck also. Didn't plan it that way, just happened. Every one of them was some kind of reject I picked up cheap(er) because they languished.

The bike was a 95 I picked up new in 98. It sat in a showroom for 3 years. I guess because it's a funny color.

  • @mytdawg: My mother got one of two Tobago Green Ford Contours I've ever seen that way. End of the model year.

Not that great a color during the day, but at night it turned silvery-blue. Pretty.

(I just found out I've told this story before; thanks, Google Images...)

I've never seen the RHPS. I'm not sure if I should.

  • @FuzzyPlushroom: Yeah, the bike was an anomaly. One year paint scheme marketed as a "deluxe" or something.

It looked goofy in the showroom but once I got it outside (after I paid for it) and away from the bright colors on the other bikes it started looking much better. The reds and yellows looked racy and this one looked goofy.

My brother still doesn't like it.

  • @Novaload: I see now why you have the star and I do not.

  • Jeesh. Like many have said before me, "ya miss one day, and look what happens..."

I was a regular weekly RiffRaff in high school and freshman year of college; went shopping with a large friend who really needed a red silk corset--but that was in Boulder CO, so we barely got a second look at the lingerie shop. He owned a Sunbeam Alpine, so he was a little bit off even before the cross dressing started. And I can relate to seeing the "WTF" look on my mom's face as described by Pope Dearthair the Awesometh, but in my case it was when she saw the Frankenfurter poster on my dorm room wall, with a clipping from the newspaper with a photo of me in full RiffRaff mode.

Jeesh, I don't think I've ever wanted to hide behind my web-psuedonym so much before.

  • Image of danio3834 danio3834 at 12:12 PM on 05/03/08 *

@mytdawg: Rocky Horror is definetely worth seeing, of only just once.

I guess any movie is worth seeing once. Except Jaws 3, never watch that movie. Ever.

  • Image of danio3834 danio3834 at 12:13 PM on 05/03/08 *

@danio3834: sorry, that was in reference to @FuzzyPlushroom:

Off topic, but check out today's (Sat. 3 May 2008) "Get Fuzzy" comic strip. Rob is wearing his "I am the Stig" t-shirt again...!

I wonder if artist/author Darby Conley hangs out amongst us Jalops...

  • Thanks everybody. This is the only place where lol is literal. The Derby is down the street and I'm not. This page removes funk better than Goof-Off or 409. Over twenty years ago I went to see RHPS with great an tic i pa tion. Black fishnet could only camo so much cottage cheese, but everyone was enjoying themselves. I had already enjoyed myself overexuberantly and passed out in ten minutes. I'll try it again sometime.

  • @danio3834: I was never able to get through Dumb and Dumber either. I like the Farrelly's but I could not watch that movie.

  • Image of Novaload Novaload at 04:05 PM on 05/03/08 *

@mytdawg: We watched it all the way through, but mostly because we couldn't believe what we were seeing and just had to see how awful it would get. Sort of like a slow motion car wreck.

  • Image of Starlton Heston, Gushing post-mother Starlton Heston,... at 05:04 PM on 05/03/08 *

SOO I just got back from shooting some sweet ass Vintage Chevies (most original and preserved) out in the rain for a VCCA meet here in Seattle(75th anniversary of a Chevy dealer as well)..

anyone interested in a massive threadjack showing my shots of the 28 cars that are braving the elements??

I'm pretty much gonna post some anyways but hell if my people demand it, I'll show them all!

I'll be watching this as I download the pics and format them.......

  • @Starlton Heston: In the future, instead of thread-jacking if you have good photos you can just email one of us (like me) and we'll just do a whole post. Even better, upload them in a reasonable size (1280 x XXX) and we'll get them up even faster.

  • Image of Starlton Heston, Gushing post-mother Starlton Heston,... at 06:08 PM on 05/03/08 *

@Matt Hardigree: emailing you no offense intended either!

  • Image of Schweppes Schweppes at 08:12 PM on 05/03/08 *

@Matt Hardigree: OMG, Weekend Content, WTF?

So you're designated poster this weekend? If I had any content I'd send it your way.

  • I got pictures of my buddies "racing Pinto" but they didn't come out so good. He's got an old Econoline too (actually 2). And a Jeep FC somethingorother.

  • Speaking of threadjacks. Sorry, I've meandered all over in this one. It's a stream of consciousness thing.

I hope I didn't ruin your big day MarionCobretti. I started out relevant.

It was an astute observation and well deserved COTD.

The Pinto is a stick by the way.

  • Image of Novaload Novaload at 10:00 AM on 05/04/08 *

@mytdawg: I never thought I would type these words, but that Pinto is actually handsome and I would happily drive it.

  • @Novaload: It's a pretty sweet car. It's got a vintage high tech (for the time) 70's head on it and open exhaust. Next time we have a Pinto thread I'll post a couple more bad pictures of it.

  • Image of UDMan UDMan at 12:10 PM on 05/04/08 *

@mytdawg: I have to add to this comment, only because other comments are coming all over the "rural" part of the country....

The town that I call home in the great yuppie state of Connecticut had passed an ordinance against the type of "portable" garages that is illustrated in the picture of the "Darth Vader" Pinto. Can you believe that? They are deemed an eyesore, and anyone who has one on their yard or business is subject to a daily fine until the thing is down. Now, I think that zoning is very important in keeping urban and suburban areas free of blight, or as a way of maintaining, or detaining growth, but this is ridiculous.

    /Thread Jack Off!

  • @UDMan: I think my friend there would probably flip out and end up on the roof with a sniper rifle if they gave him a code violation for that. His is pretty hard core, heavy snow doesn't phase it.
