Volkswagen Builds 300 HP Scirocco For Nürburgring 24-Hour Race

A lot of people think VW's upcoming Scirocco could use a little more oomph under the hood. The stock engines are rated from 122 HP to 200 HP, but this new version has a 300 HP version of the 2.0-liter TFSI inline-four. That's because the car has been race-prepped specifically for next month's 24-hour endurance race at the Nürburgring.

Yep, this little fastback will be in the same race as the Gumpert Apollo Hybrid and the Lexus LF-A. Sadly, there are currently no plans for a version of the race car to hit the streets, but who knows. After all, the Aston Martin V8 Vantage N24 started life as a specially-built car for this same race just a couple years ago.

Grrrrr... I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to
take these puny horsepower numbers anymore!

    LOOK AT ME, I'M ANGRY!!!

  • Looks even better with those aggressive fender flares. Why is this not coming to the US again?

  • i like it, but can it compete against the 800hp EIP golf?

  • That car looks mean as is. 300hp sounds like they are just doing what everyone does to those 2.0tfsi's - aftermarket exhaust and some software.

  • Is it FWD?

  • thanks for not bringing it to the US, VW. you really did us a solid.

  • Dear VW,

    Homologate that bitch!

    Love,
    gamble

  • yes, even if they did build it. us freedom fry munchers wont see it unless its grey-market

  • i'm skeptical like NICKNICK but I'm calling in chips. We never asked for anything in return for the Marshal Plan besides friendship, business and a few basis for our mutual benefit. we want that fucking car in the US!

  • I hate VW for not bringing this car to the US.

@smsolo1: I propose the Marshall Mathers Plan where we send Eminem to live in Germany until they send us some really hot Sciroccos.

Oh, and beer, they need to send us beer. And maybe some of those busty beermaids to serve the beer and to act as CoG balance for driving the hot sciroccos around corners. And bratwurst, definitely bratwurst, to go with the beer.

    Anyway, that's the plan.

  • But we still get the Passat CC...

  • @nyoh-ohio: An EIP car wouldn't even last 24 minutes into a 24 hour race.

This car is awesome BTW. My not liking this new incarnation of the Scirocco has abruptly come to an end.

  • This would be the Scirocco Siffredi Edition.

  • @wookie1901:

It is AWD and a one of a kind car. This race is an "open' class race and is not part of the European Touring car series or the European Lemans series. So for now it is a prototype class car. However it very likely be homologated for production based sedan and GT classes. In the resent past a Viper GT-! car has one this race as well as an Opel DTM car. Porsches pretty much rule this race the last few years. It is considered an excellant research test session by performance car makers because it allows such diversity of classes and doesn't require the stringent production class rules.

  • Sorry, I didn't proof read the above comment !!

  • that's how that shit's supposed to look

  • I feel all dragon-y all over.

  • Looks like the good-looking cousin of the Subaru Impreza WRX STI with 2-doors. I like.

  • VWoA are afraid that Scirocco will cannibalize GTI sales.
But they let the Audi folks have the A3 and the TT.
I lust after that angry looking car. It would look really nice parked next to my 82 Scirocco.

  • @avusone: Hey, thanks! I actually thought it might be AWD. 1) because who wants a FWD race car and 2) It would seem like an easy thing for VW to do given they already have the R32.

  • this thing needs herbie stripes and numbers!

  • This looks fantastic with the wide body kit. Unfortunately it won't materialise into a road-going version; not unless VW goes rallying and starts selling it complete with the all-wheel drive running gear and a 300hp 2.0l four to compete with the Evo and STI. Yeah, I know; I'm dreaming.

  • @wookie1901: I believe this is a RWD car to begin with?

    I could be entirely off-base, though :)

  • VW needs to reconsider what they offer in the States. Fat second gen R32 is not what we want here. Unless you push the 3.2 liter to 400 horses with forced induction, it simply weighs too much. And people here DO like to row the gears. Give the market a choice, then build what people want. Trying to force people to buy an inferior product, by not giving them the choice to buy a superior product will only result in most people losing interest in the brand.

Trust me, no S3, no Scirroco, no Bora, no new Transport.

Unless I see a nice turbodiesel EcoRacer or SOMETHING soon, I'm off VAG, and going somewhere else.

  • @j6r: And the Routan!

Seriously, VW's become a schizophrenic German Toyota.
Bad VW! No more talkshow for you!

I would not have recognized it as a VW--it's a mix of hot and goofy. Looks like a death-proof Nova rolled up its hood and squished it.

  • @rexplex: Would anyone REALLY complain if they just replaced the entire Golf series with the Scirroco series?

  • If I ever become reach I am going to start a company where I import bad ass JDM and Euro Rockets like the Scirroco. Come on implore you. Please bring the Scirroco to the US and please consider a HIGH performance version like this one. This car would destroy Subaru and Mitsubishi if it had 310hp, AWD, Wide Body style and race inspired interior. The WRX is just now realizing the whole interior thing and Mitsu has some issues with modding on a budget.

  • @rexplex:

Yes, and we don';t have the S3 because it might hurt R32 sales. The only place you can get one in North America is in Mexico. In any case, it's not like I'd buy an R32. BTW, why is it DSG only?

  • @Shantj - we don't have the S3 because Audi is the most profitable brand in VAG's portfolio and as such they don't like loosing money the way VW is by letting go of R32s for 5,000+ under MSRP. Thus, if VW is having a hard enough time selling $30,000 R32s with NAV, I have a hard time believing Audi wouldn't have any issues selling a $40,000-50,000 A3 (keeping in mind that the Current 3.2 A3 spec'd at the same level as the R32 with NAV MSRP's for $38k and change. Nah... I doubt Audi's business case for not bringing the S3 over is 'Oh noze, all these 40k+ hatches are going to take away from the R's sales'.

Per the 300hp TSI Scirocco, if it ever made it state side I'd buy one in a heart beat... but that's it, the 200hp variant does nothing for me.

  • @Euromobile: You mean going rallying like that:

  • Can someone explain to me why it matters if one car cannibalizes sales of another car within the same company? I mean, I can understand if its a division within a company, but just the company? And don't the Scirocco and Jetta/GTi share a lot of bits?

I drive a Jetta as a daily. If the Scirocco arrived, I'd switch over. I really wanted the Volvo C3, but needed a daily driver before it madeit to dealers. I love the Jetta, and the 'roc is a great mix of the two but still VW. Oh well.

  • 3 Weeks to go and I'll be there to watch it live. The best time in the year!!! 1 Week of pure Motorsport with fantastic cars on the coolest track on earth. And the best thing: I'm sleeping in our trailer directly in the paddock. There is nothing better than to be waken up from Motorsounds of Aston Martins, Lamborghini and our own Mercedes. Yeeeehaaaa!!!!
